    Entwined to the Last

Her Heart Is Made of Flesh

After agreeing to go to Wushan with Jiang Jinyi, Jiang Jinyi had changed a little.

It was as though she had surrendered—to her love for Jiang Youwan.

She no longer resisted Jiang Youwan, no longer gave her the cold shoulder. Whatever Jiang Youwan said, she would respond.

Jiang Youwan still varied the dishes, making all kinds of things she liked to eat, and Jiang Jinyi would eat—sometimes quite a lot. When Jiang Youwan saw her eating well, she would be so happy, like a worry-worn owner watching her little kitten finally deign to eat, stroking her head with relief, praising her for being so good, so wonderful.

Jiang Youwan would want to hold her, kiss her, and Jiang Jinyi didn’t refuse anymore. She let her kiss her—anywhere, anytime.

Sometimes, as they kissed, she threw herself in even more than Youwan did.

These past few days, it seemed everything was slowly getting better, yet it also felt illusory, ready to shatter at the slightest touch. Both of them trod carefully.

Jiang Youwan had stopped going to the office, working from home instead. The night before their trip to Wushan, she had just showered and was wearing a blazer, running a video conference from the study at home.

During a mid-meeting break, she knew Jiang Jinyi was in the next room playing with Xiao Yu. On a whim, she sprayed some catnip-infused perfume in her room. Xiao Yu soon came following the scent. Jiang Youwan stared at the doorway, waiting for the person who would follow.

She thought—having made this decision, having reached this point—Xiao Jin would give her what she wanted, wouldn’t she?

Before long, Jiang Jinyi appeared in the study. But what she carried wasn’t Xiao Yu’s cat teaser or fuzzy wand toy. She held a cup, and under Jiang Youwan’s gaze, set it down on the desk.

A smile rose on Jiang Youwan’s face. She propped her chin on her hand and asked, “What’s this?”

Jiang Jinyi said, “Strawberry milk pudding. I made it myself.”

Jiang Youwan blinked, clearly surprised. She glanced down at the contents of the cup for only a second before her eyes returned to Jiang Jinyi’s face. She picked up the cup and, without a trace of suspicion, drank what was inside.

“It’s good.” Jiang Youwan asked softly, “Can you make it for jiejie often from now on?”

    Jiang Jinyi fell silent.

“From now on”—that kind of promise, she could no longer bring herself to say.

So she gave her a different kind of compensation instead.

She placed a single rose on the desk.

It was a dark crimson rose, its stem thick, with thorns.

    But it was beautiful. Romantic.

Jiang Youwan clearly hadn’t expected Jiang Jinyi to give her a rose. She picked it up with delight, examined it, said she loved it, unable to put it down.

“Xiao Jin gives jiejie a rose, and now jiejie can’t help but want to kiss you. What should I do?”

She glanced at the paused video conference, then said with a hint of coaxing, “Xiao Jin, jiejie wants to kiss you. May I?”

Not domineering at all—genuinely, sincerely asking for a kiss.

How rare, for Jiang Youwan to be like this.

When someone who’s been bad improves even a little, it makes a person’s heart soften. Jiang Jinyi didn’t refuse.

She walked around the desk to stand before Jiang Youwan. Youwan looked up at her, smiling, full of anticipation.

    It made one’s heart soften.

Jiang Jinyi’s jaw tightened. She paused for a long while without moving. Jiang Youwan teased, “You have to bend down to kiss me.”

    “Mmm…”

As she slowly bent down, Jiang Youwan parted her lips and murmured, “Xiao Jin definitely hasn’t been in a relationship these past four years. How is it still the same—your girlfriend has to teach you how to kiss your girlfriend?”

    Girlfriend?

Did Jiang Youwan still think of them as a couple?

She hadn’t brought up breaking up with her, and even if she had, Jiang Youwan certainly wouldn’t have agreed.

    Then—girlfriend it was.

Jiang Jinyi didn’t refute it. She felt a pair of hands climb up her neck. She closed her eyes and pressed her lips to something soft.

The moment they touched, she instantly felt herself being gently, carefully pulled downward. She bent her knee against the office chair, braced her hands on the armrests, and deepened the kiss.

Jiang Youwan kissed her so tenderly, letting her take her time.

Only occasionally, when the kissing made her too breathless, would she flick out the tip of her tongue to tease—but she still left all control in Jiang Jinyi’s hands.

    “Mmm, Xiao Jin…”

Encouraged, Jiang Jinyi kissed deeper and deeper.

She couldn’t deny it—she was enjoying this.

The two of them kissed ever more deeply in the neat, austere study, losing themselves, until the paused meeting notification flashed back to life on the computer. Only then did Jiang Youwan tug at Jiang Jinyi’s hair, lean back slightly, and whisper, “Jiejie’s video meeting is about to start…”

Jiang Jinyi snapped back, her eyes still hazy. She glanced at the computer and instantly sobered—thank god the camera was off, the meeting was paused.

But the moment she felt relieved and tried to leave, her hand—meant to brace against the desk—accidentally hit a key on the keyboard.

The screen lit up instantly, capturing the two of them as they were.

On screen, she was bracing herself against the desk and chair, while Jiang Youwan lounged lazily in the office chair. Youwan’s lips were slightly swollen, and there was a lip mark at the corner of Jinyi’s mouth.

Both their faces were plainly visible.

This position, this image—there was no question what they’d just been doing.

Jiang Jinyi’s body went rigid, eyes wide. The next second, she recovered her senses and fled.

“Sorry about that—my little girlfriend is a bit clingy, made me late.” Jiang Youwan’s voice came from behind. Jiang Jinyi couldn’t help looking back. Youwan had already straightened up, facing the people on the video call with a poised smile—though her cheeks were flushed and her lips still slightly swollen.

    She said “little girlfriend.”

That was clearly deliberate—deliberately announcing their relationship in front of outsiders.

Jiang Jinyi suddenly thought of something. Perhaps she thought of tomorrow, perhaps she thought of why she had come here tonight.

She stopped in her tracks. Instead of continuing toward the door, she walked back to Youwan.

Jiang Youwan lifted her gaze, looking at her in confusion. Jinyi parted her lips and mouthed something to her.

    Three words.

Three words that Jiang Youwan couldn’t refuse.

They didn’t come from her mouth—just the shape of them. Even so, Jiang Youwan felt a shiver run through her body, a flash of excitement in her eyes. She parted her lips and said, “I’m very sorry, but that will be all for today’s video meeting.”

    “My girlfriend is upset.”

Closing the laptop, Jiang Youwan—still wearing that blazer—sat on top of the desk, gazing at her with eyes like silk.

Jiang Jinyi shooed Xiao Yu away, strode forward, tilted her head up, and captured her lips. Unlike the tenderness from before, this kiss was almost frenzied.

“Why did you close the laptop? Didn’t you want to tell the whole world I’m your girlfriend?” Jiang Jinyi demanded, almost fiercely.

Jiang Youwan’s words came in broken fragments, unable to respond.

Xiao Jin, this fierce and this all-consuming—it would make anyone think tomorrow was the end of the world.

Wushan was in the outskirts of Luo City, a two-hour drive away. By the time they arrived, it was already noon.

This was a relatively obscure tourist spot—normally, nobody came at all. It was a weekday, so it was even quieter.

There was a temple halfway up the mountain that was said to have been quite famous in ancient times. Why exactly it was famous, Jiang Jinyi had no interest in learning—and no desire to know.

The mountain path was gentle. The two of them climbed on foot, walking side by side, very close together. Several times, Jiang Youwan hooked her pinky around Jiang Jinyi’s, but never fully held her hand.

Jiang Jinyi walked the whole way with a heavy heart, her heartbeat racing, her steps unusually sluggish, as if her feet refused to carry her forward.

Her heart felt like it was crushed beneath a massive stone—every two steps, she couldn’t catch her breath. She didn’t even notice Jiang Youwan’s gestures.

She didn’t know how she’d made it to the temple entrance. It was very quiet—no monks came to greet them. They walked in on their own.

Before her stood the Buddha statue, yet she didn’t know what she was supposed to do.

Youwan tugged at her several more times before she finally noticed. Thinking Youwan wanted to hold her hand, she reached out without hesitation and took it.

Even after their hands were joined, Jiang Youwan wasn’t satisfied. She turned and kissed Jinyi’s cheek, then whispered, “Kiss jiejie.”

It seemed she knew that Jiang Jinyi would agree to any request now. Jiang Youwan was pushing her luck.

    She always pushed her luck.

That was just how Jiang Youwan was.

Jiang Jinyi humored her. Let her do whatever she wanted—anything was fine.

Jiang Youwan kissed her and said, “Jiejie’s only joking. This temple is where couples come specifically to pray for lasting devotion. A little kiss is perfectly fine. I thought Xiao Jin knew—that you came here to pray for us…”

    Lasting devotion for couples?

Hearing Youwan say this, Jiang Jinyi’s heart was suddenly pierced, as if by something sharp, and a different kind of guilt flooded in.

    Guilt toward Jiang Youwan.

She reminded herself: there’s no need to feel this way. She is your enemy. She is the bad person. Your mother died because of her.

Your life was ruined by her, too.

There’s no reason to feel sorry for her.

That evening, they found a farmstay on Wushan and settled in.

In the past, getting Jiang Jinyi to stay at a place like this would have been absolutely impossible. But this time, even after seeing the living conditions, she insisted on staying.

She needed to spend the night here.

Jiang Youwan spoiled her as much as before—indulging her in everything, never asking why.

The prayers that needed to be said had already been said, hadn’t they?

The food here didn’t suit Jiang Jinyi’s taste. She didn’t eat. Jiang Youwan, as if she’d expected it all along, pulled thermal containers from her bag—filled with all the things Jinyi loved to eat.

“Are you going to sleep with jiejie tonight?”

“The beds here are hard, and the blankets might not be very clean. Without jiejie coaxing Xiao Jin to sleep, you probably can’t fall asleep, right?”

The proprietor had given them two separate rooms. Jiang Youwan stood at her doorway, asking.

Jiang Jinyi kept her eyes downcast, trying to suppress the ache and suffocation in her chest. She couldn’t—they leaked through unmistakably, her voice even trembling a little. “No need.”

These past few days, Jiang Youwan hadn’t forced her to share a bed, leaving all the initiative to her.

“Okay, then…” Jiang Youwan still smiled gently, not asking why her voice shook, only saying, “Good night, Xiao Jin.”

Jiang Jinyi didn’t say good night back.

    It was too hypocritical.

Jiang Youwan didn’t say anything more and left.

Jiang Jinyi’s heart was tangled into knots.

Jiang Youwan had been back in her room for a long time now.

Or perhaps it only felt long to Jiang Jinyi. Every minute, every second was torture.

She wasn’t calm. She felt no joy of approaching victory. She felt not the slightest pleasure—only the agony of being in hell.

Her heart was made of flesh. She loved Jiang Youwan.

That was the most painful part. Jiang Youwan had seduced her, made her fall deeply in love with her.

Her fists clenched tight. Her hand was already bleeding, but she couldn’t feel the pain.

The clearest pain was the one in her heart.

Every tiny sound from outside felt like a gunshot to her.

    Heart pounding, breathless.

Would things really be okay? If Jiang Youwan was killed, would things really be okay? If she died, would everything truly be over?

    Would the pain stop?

Jiang Jinyi asked herself these questions.

    She couldn’t find an answer.

She was going to break down.

Just then, footsteps and voices came from outside. Before Jiang Jinyi could make out who it was or what they were saying, she leaped from the bed, threw open the door with all reason abandoned, and rushed out. To her astonishment, the people she ran into were Xu An and Ji Xiaoqin.

“The dogs at this farmstay are seriously terrifying… An’an, look.”

Ji Xiaoqin showed Xu An the photos she’d taken. Xu An stopped to look, frowning deeply, her expression odd. The next second, she saw Jiang Jinyi.

    “What are you doing here?”

Jiang Jinyi had no time to explain to Xu An. She rushed into Jiang Youwan’s room. She knocked—no answer. She forced the door open. The room was empty.

Only a bracelet of Buddha beads sat on the desk.

Jiang Jinyi recognized it—it was the safety talisman she had once prayed for at a temple on Jiang Youwan’s behalf. Youwan never took it off except to shower or sleep…

    But now…

Everything from today flashed through her mind. Jiang Jinyi understood something. It had all been traceable, all leading here.

In an instant, she felt a part of her heart collapse.
