    Cold Eyes

“What were you doing last night?”

On the other side, in Country A.

Time ticked by, minute by minute. Jiang Youwan sat slumped against the soft hotel sofa, frowning, deep exhaustion written across her features. She hadn’t even changed out of her business suit. One hand rested on the other, fingers gently stroking the white jade Buddhist beads around her wrist.

She was thinking about her Xiao Jin.

Her heartbeat kept pace with the turning clock hands. The closer midnight came, the faster it beat.

Xiao Jin had celebrated her birthday twice before—once for her twenty-fourth, once for her twenty-fifth.

Every single detail of those two nights was carved into her memory, brought out again and again in the quiet hours to savor.

On the night of her twenty-fourth birthday, Jiang Youwan hadn’t slept well. In fact, she hadn’t slept at all. She’d stayed on a long video call with the eighteen-year-old Jiang Jinyi—or rather, they’d been on video call all night.

    Five years ago.

“Xiao Jin, can you promise not to hang up?” Jiang Youwan clutched the little fox plush in her hands, speaking to Jiang Jinyi on the screen. Afraid she’d refuse, she added, “This is my birthday wish.”

    A birthday wish?

“Who makes a birthday wish like that?” Jiang Jinyi asked, puzzled and a little dissatisfied. Jiang Youwan thought she didn’t want to agree, and her expression dimmed. Disappointed, she said, “Then Xiao Jin should get some rest early.”

“When did I say I was going to hang up?” Jiang Jinyi’s voice rose, dripping with tsundere pride. “What I meant was, I won’t hang up, but I’m not using up your birthday wish. You can still make a wish. You can make three.”

Jiang Youwan was stunned for a moment. “…Three?”

Jiang Jinyi got the feeling she’d never had a birthday before and didn’t know how it worked. She explained in a very serious, almost commanding tone: “Yes, birthday wishes come in threes. That’s the rule. Everyone gets three. Now make your wish.”

Jiang Youwan’s lips curved upward. She had a beautiful smile. Lying alone in the wide hospital bed, she had an indescribable fragility about her—the kind that made you want to care for her, to love her, to keep her company, to make sure she wasn’t lonely.

A little plaintively, she said, “But my birthday is already over. If I make a wish now, won’t it not come true?”

“…Oh, right.” It was already past midnight—the day after her birthday. Wishing on the sky wouldn’t work anymore.

Jiang Jinyi thought for a moment, then generously declared, “Then make your wish to me. I’ll help you fulfill it.”

    “Really?” Jiang Youwan was delighted.

“Of course it’s really. Three wishes—that’s nothing for this miss here.” Jiang Jinyi looked at her and urged, “Just hurry up and wish.”

“Thank you, Xiao Jin. Then I’ll wish?” Jiang Youwan checked one more time, cautiously. Jiang Jinyi hummed in affirmation and started mentally calculating her allowance. It should be enough to make her wishes come true, right?

It should be. Jiang Jinyi felt confident and added, “You can be a little more demanding.”

    A little more demanding?

No one had ever said “you can be a little more demanding” to her before.

Jiang Youwan couldn’t help but laugh softly. She murmured something, and Jiang Jinyi froze.

She said, “I want Xiao Jin to like me.”

Then she said, “I want Xiao Jin to come keep me company tomorrow.”

And with a smile, she made her third wish: “I want Xiao Jin to call me Jiejie.”

Jiang Jinyi was completely stunned. What kind of wishes were these?!

“Will Xiao Jin agree?” Jiang Youwan knew perfectly well how embarrassing her wishes were, but her smile only deepened.

She couldn’t see Jiang Jinyi’s expression, but the longer the silence stretched, the more she wanted to laugh.

She’d wasted all three wishes just to tease her.

Jiang Jinyi stayed quiet for a long time. Jiang Youwan tested the waters, a little pitiful: “Can Xiao Jin agree?”

Jiang Jinyi’s face was slightly flushed. She gritted her teeth and put on a fierce expression—not that Jiang Youwan could see it.

    Fine.

She’d promised. She couldn’t go back on her word.

Awkwardly, she said, “I agree, okay?”

Jiang Jinyi took a deep breath, as if steeling herself, and said seriously, “I’ll come keep you company tomorrow. And… I kind of like you now. I don’t hate you anymore, jiejie.”

With that one sentence, she fulfilled all three wishes.

As soon as she finished, Jiang Jinyi immediately covered her face and eyes in embarrassment, too shy to look at Jiang Youwan’s expression on the screen.

Jiang Youwan was deeply satisfied. “Thank you, Xiao Jin. That’s the first birthday gift you’ve ever given me.”

Jiang Jinyi was flustered, stammering, not knowing what to say.

    “Xiao Jin is so cute…”

Jiang Jinyi plugged her phone in to charge and set it by her pillow. Before long, Jiang Youwan could hear steady breathing from the other end of the line.

Every now and then, she’d turn over, let out a soft murmur, and sometime in the dead of night, she mumbled something indistinct: “Jiejie…

Jiang Youwan’s heart skipped a beat. “Mm, Jiejie is here.”

    Knock knock—

A knock at the door pulled Jiang Youwan out of her memories. She opened her eyes and glanced at the clock on the wall. It was almost eleven fifty. Her heart began to race. A smile tugged at her lips as she got up to answer the door.

    Could it be Xiao Jin?

Her hand on the handle, she opened the door. For a split second, Jiang Youwan’s heart stopped. When she saw who it was, she felt something that had been soaring high begin to plummet—plummet hard, all the way to the bottom. The smile froze on her face, and her eyes gradually dimmed.

    It was disappointment.

“Is there something you need?” Jiang Youwan’s expression had already returned to its usual cool detachment as she addressed the employee in front of her.

“President Jiang, happy birthday. What a coincidence—we just finished our work, and it happens to be your birthday, so a few of us put together a little birthday party. We’d like to invite you to join us.” The young employee was naturally nervous facing Jiang Youwan, but her smile was sincere.

Jiang Youwan was silent for a moment, then gave a faint smile. “Thank you. Could you give me a moment?”

The employee nodded vigorously. “Of course! It’s on the hotel rooftop.”

After the employee left, Jiang Youwan slowly turned around and checked the time. It was 11:58. Two more minutes.

The hope in her heart hadn’t completely died yet.

She pulled out her phone. She hadn’t dared to look at Xiao Jin’s location all evening. She guessed—maybe Xiao Jin was planning to surprise her.

To preserve the surprise, she hadn’t checked.

As soon as midnight passed, she finally couldn’t hold back anymore. She looked. The distance between her and Jiang Jinyi was several thousand kilometers.

    She was completely crushed.

When she arrived at the hotel rooftop, the employees who had come on the business trip had already decorated it beautifully. They’d even prepared a big cake and wished her a happy birthday.

Since everyone was tired, the party didn’t last long. Most people had already left. Just as Jiang Youwan was about to go as well, a blond, blue-eyed man emerged from behind a wall holding a huge bouquet of roses. Jiang Youwan frowned. This man was her client.

A male alpha. Mature and accomplished.

Foreigners were always so open and bold. After only a few days of acquaintance, he dared to stand before the woman he liked, roses in hand, and say sincerely, “Miss Youwan, I like you. You’re exactly my type. I’ve liked you since the first moment I saw you.”

Jiang Youwan could only offer an apologetic smile and gently refuse. “I’m sorry, Mr. Kim. I already have someone I like.”

The blond man was stunned for a moment, then quickly accepted the answer. Curious, he asked, “Today is Miss Youwan’s birthday, but it seems the person you like didn’t come to celebrate with you.”

Jiang Youwan lowered her eyes and smiled. “She’s still back in the country.”

“Ah, I see.” The blond man sounded regretful. “If it were me, I would never miss a single birthday of the person I love.”

Jiang Youwan gave a bitter smile. “We’re not lovers yet.”

The blond man was a little surprised. “What kind of person could make Miss Youwan pine for them unrequitedly?”

    It wasn’t exactly unrequited.

    “Mm… she’s very cute.”

Back in her room, Jiang Youwan took out her phone and checked again. Still no message from Jiang Jinyi.

It seemed that little bastard really didn’t remember her birthday. Her talk about going to the beach wasn’t a lie—she’d actually gone.

Jiang Youwan couldn’t sleep, and she didn’t want to. The truth was, what she’d told Jiang Jinyi about staying in Country A for over ten days was a lie. She could go back today. The work was already done. She’d lied because she wanted to see if Jinyi would remember her birthday and come find her.

The result was… a little heartbreaking.

Jiang Youwan booked the earliest flight back home.

    Meanwhile, on the other side.

Jiang Jinyi struggled to open her eyes. The first thing she saw was an exquisite chandelier. It seemed to sway before her eyes, spinning like clock hands. Her head was pounding. She propped herself up with difficulty. The air was thick with omega pheromones—Huo Qi’s pheromones.

“Awake so soon? I’m not ready yet.”

It was Huo Qi. Huo Qi’s voice.

    Huo Qi was back.

The memories from before she passed out slowly flooded back. She snapped fully awake and sat up abruptly. Huo Qi emerged from the room, wearing a very sexy nightgown, and walked slowly toward her.

Jiang Jinyi didn’t have the attention to spare for her. She grabbed her phone to check the time, but it wouldn’t turn on. She looked at the wall clock instead. It was already one in the morning.

    She’d missed her flight…

Jiang Jinyi was genuinely furious. She looked up and cursed, “Huo Qi, are you insane? I asked you to take me to the airport! What did you bring me here for?”

“You couldn’t even wake up, and you still wanted to get on a plane?” Huo Qi was jealous—jealousy and excitement running together, twisting her expression. “You were that desperate to go see your sister?”

Jiang Jinyi was livid. “Did you do this on purpose? Are you out of your mind? I hate you so much right now!”

“Heh…” Huo Qi shrugged indifferently. “It doesn’t matter. You’ll belong to me soon enough.”

Jiang Jinyi froze. “What did you say?”

Huo Qi smiled, speaking slowly. “Don’t you feel it? Your body is getting hotter. It’s stirring. It’s being drawn to me.”

As she spoke, Huo Qi deliberately released her pheromones. The scent of roses filled the entire room, enveloping Jiang Jinyi, relentlessly attacking the back of her neck. Jiang Jinyi belatedly realized that the suppressant patch on her gland had been torn off at some point.

Jiang Youwan had told her—when she went out, she had to keep the patch on, to keep those bad omegas from luring her away. She’d always obeyed. Huo Qi had torn it off.

Huo Qi was an A-class omega. Jiang Jinyi had never found her pheromones particularly pleasant, nor had she ever been seduced by them. But now, something else inside her was slowly taking control. She’d been drugged.

Being drugged meant she would be forced into a rut—and not an ordinary one. It was the kind she couldn’t control.

Jiang Jinyi was stunned. She never would have imagined Huo Qi would do something like this to her. “Are you crazy?”

Huo Qi gave a seductive smile. “I’m not crazy. I’m perfectly clear-headed.”

“You know? I’ve been waiting for this day for five years. No—not five years. I’ve liked you since I was thirteen. You know that? You were the first person I ever liked. Because Xiao Jin looked like an omega, I started hoping I’d differentiate into an alpha. When I ended up as an omega, I was pretty sad. You asked me what was wrong. I didn’t tell you the reason—it was because I couldn’t mark you anymore. I was afraid I’d scare you.”

Huo Qi recounted her old, twisted feelings for Jiang Jinyi in a leisurely tone. “I never expected that, after all these twists and turns, you’d be the one to become an alpha. If I can be marked by you, I’d be happy with that too.”

With that, Huo Qi swept her long hair aside, exposing the most vulnerable part of an omega—the back of her neck. Jiang Jinyi’s eyes were bloodshot. Her breathing grew heavier. The drug was amplifying an alpha’s most primal urges. There was only one thought in her mind.

She absolutely could not mark her.

    Absolutely not.

Feeling herself slipping out of control, Jiang Jinyi dug her nails into her palm and forced out the words: “Huo Qi, I don’t like you. I don’t like you at all. I’m not going to mark you. Give me the antidote now, and I’ll pretend none of this ever happened. Don’t do this.”

“Pretend none of it ever happened? How could that be possible?” Huo Qi laughed. Suddenly she stepped forward and threw her arms around Jiang Jinyi. Jinyi’s eyes flew wide. She shoved her away instantly, sending Huo Qi crashing to the floor in a heap.

Jiang Jinyi grabbed her bag and ran to the door, trying to get out, but she couldn’t open it. The door was locked. It was a sealed space, filled with the scent of roses, filled with the aphrodisiac.

Huo Qi watched Jiang Jinyi’s panicked movements, a look of smug certainty in her eyes. “The key is with me. If you’ve got the nerve, come and get it. If you can take it, I’ll let you go.”

Jiang Jinyi was an alpha. A drugged alpha. Any omega would be a fatal temptation to her now. Huo Qi was a hundred percent sure that if Jiang Jinyi dared to come near her, she’d never escape her embrace again.

Even if she didn’t come close, in this sealed space full of omega pheromones, how long could she hold out?

She still couldn’t escape her grasp.

Huo Qi smiled triumphantly. Jiang Jinyi bit her lip. She’d already bitten through it. Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth. Her delicate, pretty face was flushed red. Her gaze flickered between clarity and delirium as she fought with all her might to hold on.

Then she saw something. She grabbed a vase from the shoe rack. Huo Qi’s expression stiffened, thinking she was going to hit her with it. Instead, Jiang Jinyi smashed the vase against the floor. It shattered into a thousand pieces. Jiang Jinyi picked up a shard with difficulty and slashed it hard across her own arm. Instantly, blood gushed out.

“What are you doing?!” Huo Qi was stunned.

The sharp, searing pain jolted Jiang Jinyi’s brain, snapping her back to clarity. The drug’s effect was temporarily suppressed. She seized the opportunity and released her own oppressive SSS-class alpha pheromones. Huo Qi’s legs gave way instantly. She collapsed to the floor, unable to move.

Jiang Jinyi staggered over to her and began searching her for the key. Huo Qi was pinned down by her pheromones, flopping like a fish on a chopping block, completely helpless.

“Don’t touch me! Don’t touch me!” Huo Qi gasped heavily, even trying to crawl backward to keep Jinyi from finding the key. She never would have imagined that the girl who used to cry and scream over a tiny pinprick would go this far to escape her.

    “Jiang Jinyi, stop looking! Stop!”

Blood pooled on the floor, soaking Jiang Jinyi’s entire sleeve. She forced herself to stay conscious and found the key to the door. She couldn’t hear what Huo Qi was saying anymore. There was only Jiang Youwan’s face in her mind. She opened the door and rushed out, fleeing the villa.

Huo Qi’s body was still weak and limp. Her eyes were fixed on Jiang Jinyi’s retreating back, a fire of jealousy burning inside her, consuming her until there was nothing left.

Jiang Jinyi clutched her wound and ran a long, long way. She knew she was about to lose control, so she stayed away from people, away from omegas. She was terrified that if she ran into an omega, she wouldn’t be able to stop herself from marking them. She couldn’t mark another omega. She knew that if she marked anyone else, Jiang Youwan would be furious. Jiang Youwan wouldn’t want her anymore.

Her mark was only for Jiang Youwan.

She didn’t know where she’d run to. Her strength gave out. Her vision blurred. The pain was unbearable. She couldn’t see the road ahead anymore. She collapsed and passed out again.

When she woke up again, she found herself lying in a bed. Sunlight was streaming in through the window. It was already daytime.

Her wound had been bandaged. She was wearing a clean set of clothes.

    But this wasn’t her home.

“You’re awake? Where do you live?” A girl pushed open the door and walked in. Jiang Jinyi tensed up on instinct, then realized the drug’s effect had already worn off. And the girl didn’t have any scent of pheromones. She was a beta.

Jiang Jinyi breathed a sigh of relief, but then a wave of dejection washed over her. Her mood sank. She hadn’t been able to go celebrate Jiang Youwan’s birthday.

Jiang Youwan must be so sad right now. She must think Jinyi had forgotten her birthday, that she didn’t care about her.

Jinyi herself felt so miserable she wanted to cry.

Thankfully, her bag was still with her. The gift for Jiang Youwan was still there.

She explained the situation to the girl, and the girl had her family’s driver take her back to the Jiang family villa. It was already nine in the morning.

“Miss, you’re back.” A servant hurried over to greet her, her face full of worry. “The Eldest Miss is back. She just got off the plane. She seems to be in a very bad mood. You should go see her.”

    Back? She was back?

    Jiang Youwan was back?

Jiang Jinyi’s eyes lit up instantly. She ran into the house, clutching the gift she was going to give Jiang Youwan. She raced up the stairs in excitement, pushed open the door, and saw Jiang Youwan sitting on the sofa, looking exhausted.

    She really was back!

Jiang Youwan heard the sound and opened her eyes. When she saw Jiang Jinyi standing in the doorway, there was no joy in her gaze. Instead, her brow furrowed.

    “Jiang Youwan, I—”

“Stop right there.” Jiang Youwan’s voice was sharp.

Jiang Jinyi was startled by the icy tone. She froze in her tracks, the smile stiffening on her face.

    “Wh-What’s wrong?”

Jiang Youwan stood up. Her fox-like eyes held a coldness Jiang Jinyi had never seen before—deep and dark, as if she were looking at something disgusting. That look pierced Jiang Jinyi like a blade. A chill seeped into every bone in her body.

Jiang Jinyi’s eyes instantly reddened. She couldn’t bear Jiang Youwan looking at her like that. She didn’t dare move. She stood frozen in place, her heart aching as if someone had stomped on it.

She hadn’t felt this wronged even when Huo Qi drugged her. She hadn’t felt this wronged even when she cut herself with the shard.

Why was Jiang Youwan looking at her like this…

“Jiang Youwan…” Her voice was lost and frightened, tinged with a sob.

Jiang Youwan walked closer, her eyes fixed on Jinyi. Her red lips parted as she demanded coldly, “Why do you have such a strong smell of omega pheromones on you?”

“What were you doing last night?”

The author has something to say:

Don’t cry, Xiao Jin. Jiejie will love you properly in a little while.
