    We Could Try

“The fetus is very stable — you can, you know, do that…”

Was Jiang Youwan awake? Had the stolen kiss been discovered?

Jiang Jinyi ran the question through her mind once, and found it didn’t seem to matter anymore.

    Bastard…

Fine. A bastard, then. So be it.

The curve at the corner of Jiang Jinyi’s lips refused to be suppressed. Her whole heart brimmed with Jiang Youwan’s tenderness, and her arm wrapped around that slender waist. She gave one last glance at the plushies Jiang Youwan had “abandoned” there, then closed her eyes in smug triumph.

    “Goodnight, jiejie.”

Three months apart, and now the two of them slept wrapped in each other’s arms, with nothing else in the world.

Outside the window the snow fell heavier and heavier, but the cold was shut out beyond them.

All the sorrow, the torment, the pain — in this moment, all of it was healed.

It felt so good that a person could want to sink into it forever, never to wake.

The next day, early morning light spilled through the window and onto the bed, where the two figures lay entwined, indistinguishable from each other. The soft, generous bed, the sweet, yielding body in her arms — the sight of it alone looked impossibly comfortable.

It had been a long time since Jiang Youwan had slept this well. She was still sunk deep in a lovely dream when the phone on the nightstand gave a soft chime. Her alarm.

Her eyes drifted open, gaze still hazy with sleep, looking like someone who hadn’t rested nearly enough.

Half-drowsing, she slipped out of Jiang Jinyi’s embrace and glanced down. Jiang Jinyi was still fast asleep, apparently undisturbed by the ringing.

Sleeping so deeply. Just like before.

Her expression softened, and with doting care she cupped a jade-smooth hand over Jiang Jinyi’s ear, then leaned across to pick up the phone and switch off the alarm.

Counting the days, she was nearly three months along now. She’d booked today’s prenatal checkup, which was why she’d set the alarm early.

She turned off the phone and settled back under the covers, one hand lazily propping her cheek. The other hand didn’t leave Jiang Jinyi’s face — instead it caressed her gently, gliding over her cheek, her jaw, the line of her neck.

Sometimes it was genuinely hard to imagine — that Xiao Jin had gotten her pregnant.

So delicate, so sweet and delicious, so easy to bully…

She looked obedient on the surface, but really, she was such a little bastard.

At the thought, Jiang Youwan’s fox eyes narrowed, and the hand currently pinching that cheek applied a bit more pressure.

Jiang Jinyi let out a soft mewl. Her arm groped about, found no one, and her lovely brows knitted together as she mumbled indistinctly, “Jiejie…”

Jiang Jinyi’s half-asleep voice sounded just like a milk-drunk kitten — soft, sweet, and syrupy…

Hearing jiejie called in that voice genuinely pleased Jiang Youwan.

    “Jiejie…”

Already half caught between dream and waking, Jiang Jinyi nuzzled the space beside her several times, found no one there, and realized the jiejie in her arms had vanished. Instinctively, she began to search.

Jiang Youwan found it delightful. She deliberately shifted back a little farther, picked up her phone, and opened the video recorder, aiming it at Jiang Jinyi.

In her dream, Jiang Jinyi searched and searched without finding anyone, and the anxiety jolted her awake. She forced her eyes open, made out the blurry silhouette of Jiang Youwan, and immediately pushed herself up and crawled toward her.

The collar still circled her neck, and Jiang Youwan realized — seeing it on her in daylight was an entirely different feeling from the night before.

The soft, generous bed. The warm sunlight. That pale, delicate throat. That dazed, half-awake face. She looked exactly like a kept pet, waking from sleep and going straight to look for her Master.

The bell at the center of the collar chimed with her movements, mingling with the petulant little whimpers in her throat — and it satisfied, to the utmost, the desire to control coiled in the depths of Jiang Youwan’s heart.

    “Mm…”

Jiang Youwan watched her through the phone’s viewfinder, laughter rippling in her eyes. She couldn’t help remarking, “Xiao Jin, do you know what you look like right now?”

“Mm?” Jiang Jinyi noticed that Jiang Youwan was filming her. Being captured on camera in this state — she felt no anger, no resistance. Her eyes held only Jiang Youwan.

Eagerly, she wrapped her arms around her and tucked herself into her embrace, eyes closed, humming and burbling like a cat purring in contentment.

    “Jiejie. Love you, jiejie…”

Jiang Youwan didn’t stop the recording. She adjusted the angle and kept filming. “Do you know you’re even clingier than Xiao Yu first thing in the morning?”

“A well-behaved little pet like this — come on, say ‘Master’ for me.”

    Say… Master?

Jiang Jinyi’s eyes opened. She looked at the camera lens trained on her in Jiang Youwan’s hand, bit her lip, and with a burning face turned her gaze aside, then breathed it out softly: “Master…”

The moment she said it, mortification washed over her in full force. She turned her face away and buried it in the soft, sweet warmth of Jiang Youwan’s chest.

Shameless, really — using her own embarrassment as cover to push her luck a little further.

“Saved it,” Jiang Youwan murmured into her ear as she set the phone down.

“I want to post it online. Let everyone see Xiao Jin just like this.”

Jiang Jinyi’s cheeks burned. A long moment passed before she spoke, muffled: “Only if jiejie captions it saying I’m your girlfriend…”

“How do you manage to keep pushing your luck like this?”

“Mm… It’s what jiejie’s spoiled me into.” Jiang Jinyi nuzzled her again and mumbled under her breath.

Utterly shameless in her confidence — and yet not a word of it was false.

She really had been spoiled into this by Jiang Youwan.

Following Jiang Youwan home, getting into Jiang Youwan’s bed, then kissing Jiang Youwan, sleeping holding Jiang Youwan, and now burrowing into Jiang Youwan’s chest — wasn’t every bit of it the fruit of Jiang Youwan’s own indulgence?

Jiang Jinyi had been pampered from the cradle, and in a single night she’d been spoiled into utter brazenness.

Hearing this, Jiang Youwan laughed in exasperation and lowered her head, about to scold her — but the position made her glance, entirely by accident, at the back of that neck.

Where the collar circled it, the skin was faintly flushed red. Jiang Youwan’s gaze sharpened, and she immediately reached up to undo the collar.

This collar was custom-made, of the softest, most comfortable material. Fastened properly, it would cause no discomfort and no harm whatsoever — even over an injury.

    But…

This little fool had no idea how to fasten it.

Sensing Jiang Youwan undoing the collar, Jiang Jinyi lifted her head in confusion. As she worked it loose, Jiang Youwan asked, “Doesn’t it hurt? Why did you fasten it so tight?”

By the time Jiang Jinyi registered the question, the collar was already off. She scooted backward, shaking her head, rushing to explain: “It doesn’t hurt…”

Under Jiang Youwan’s utterly unconvinced stare, she guiltily added, “Just a tiny bit.”

“It hurt. Why didn’t you say anything?”

Jiang Jinyi lifted her eyes and stole a careful little look at her. “Because jiejie likes it… I didn’t want to spoil it for you…”

    Didn’t want to spoil it?

The words made Jiang Youwan’s brows draw together. She looked genuinely angry now, and the pressure of it was immense.

“So now you’re not spoiling anything? You know exactly what condition your gland is in—” Why won’t you take care of yourself?

Doesn’t it hurt? Xiao Jin fears pain more than anything. Doesn’t she?

The rest of it, Jiang Youwan never managed to say. Jiang Jinyi cut her off, voice thick with tears: “Jiejie, it’s fine. It will get better…”

Jiang Youwan froze. She looked at the faint redness rimming those eyes, and realized — the words she’d just spoken had wounded her.

In truth, Jiang Youwan had understood it that day already. Because the gland had been ruined by Jinyi’s own hand, she dared not show the slightest discomfort in front of her — because she believed she didn’t deserve to.

Whenever her attention drifted to that gland, Jinyi would always say it — it will get better, it will get better.

So how could she ever have said, while wearing the collar: it’s a little tight, it’s hurting my gland?

    Her pride forbade it.

She was terrified of letting herself believe the gland might never heal. Terrified of being abandoned.

The thought dissolved Jiang Youwan’s heart into ache. She regretted speaking so thoughtlessly, and the furrow between her brows smoothed away. She looked at her gently and coaxed, “Xiao Jin, come here. Let jiejie take a look, all right?”

She was coaxing — but Jiang Jinyi still refused.

She wiped at her eyes and shook her head. “There’s nothing to look at. Jiejie, isn’t your checkup at ten? There’s plenty of time. If you’re still sleepy you can nap a little longer. I’ll get up and get ready first.”

Before Jiang Youwan could say a word, she slipped off the bed. Jiang Youwan watched her retreating figure, pressed her red lips together, her eyes brimming with heartache.

Before long, Jiang Youwan rose as well.

Jiang Jinyi was the picture of attentiveness. She fed Xiao Yu cat food, squeezed Youwan’s toothpaste for her, filled her rinsing cup, buttoned her coat for her, and crouched down to tie the laces of her boots.

Everything seemed perfectly normal — and yet Jiang Youwan keenly sensed that some inexplicable stiffness had settled between the two of them.

Once the laces were tied, Jiang Jinyi stood up. “Jiejie, shall we go now?”

She didn’t ask whether she was allowed to come along to the checkup, because she knew that even if Jiang Youwan refused her, she would go anyway.

    This was her responsibility.

She’d cling on, thick-skinned and shameless, and go regardless.

Jiang Youwan said nothing, and Jiang Jinyi grew a little anxious — only to watch her take down the creamy-white bunny scarf from its hook and fasten it around her neck with her own hands.

“It’ll be cold out.” She tied it with the utmost care, pale, slender hands moving back and forth until the scarf sat sweet and snug, sealing out every draft — keeping Jiang Jinyi warm, and shielding her gland.

Being treated so carefully, so tenderly, by Jiang Youwan was truly a heart-stopping thing. Jiang Jinyi’s pulse quickened, and the stiffness between them quietly melted away.

    “I won’t be cold now.”

The two of them were dressed to match today. Underneath, Jiang Jinyi wore Jiang Youwan’s own clothes; over that, the white fox fleece coat from last night.

As it happened, Jiang Youwan wore a coat of the same cut — only hers was black.

She wore no makeup, just a swipe of lipstick, and looked every inch the seductive, bewitching, powerful bad woman.

Walking beside her, Jiang Jinyi looked for all the world like a little white rabbit she kept.

At the hospital, Jiang Jinyi — knowing how she loathed the smell of antiseptic — had prepared a scented mask for her to wear, and accompanied her through the full battery of examinations. When the display showed the still-unformed shape of the fetus in Jiang Youwan’s belly, her heart clenched so tight she could scarcely breathe.

Only when the doctor pronounced the fetus healthy did her heart finally settle back to earth, and the weight of guilt ease.

And yet an ache remained — the kind that made her want to cry.

As the doctor ran through the precautions, she listened while taking notes on her phone, missing hardly a word.

But when the doctor said the alpha should use pheromones often to soothe the omega, her composure cracked clean through, and she wanted to sink through the floor.

By the time she came back to herself, Jiang Youwan had already cut the doctor off and moved on to the next item.

She kept taking notes; the doctor kept talking — but the atmosphere had changed entirely.

A few more instructions, and the doctor had nearly finished. Suddenly Jiang Jinyi rose to her feet and said to Jiang Youwan, “Jiejie, I’m going to step out for a moment. I’ll be right back.”

Without waiting for Jiang Youwan’s answer, she bolted out the door.

Jiang Youwan’s heart ached with the certainty that her pride had been wounded, that she couldn’t bear to stay in that room a second longer, that she was about to break down and had run off to cry in private.

Xiao Jin had been a proud, pampered young lady since the day she was born. Everything she owned was the very best — beyond anyone’s reach, the object of everyone’s envy.

How could she possibly stomach a blow like this?

Jiang Youwan picked up her bag and hurried out after her.

Snow was falling from the sky, and Jiang Jinyi was running terribly fast. From a distance, Jiang Youwan saw her stumble mid-run and take a hard fall.

Jiang Youwan’s heart took the impact with her. She started toward her — but before she’d covered two steps, Jiang Jinyi was already scrambling up from the ground.

She didn’t even spare a moment to brush the snow off herself before dashing up to the front of a porridge shop.

Jiang Youwan didn’t approach. She simply watched from afar.

Only while waiting for the porridge did Jinyi find a spare moment to dust the snow from her clothes; and the moment the porridge was ready, she grabbed it and hurried back.

Who that bowl of porridge was for went without saying.

Jiang Youwan pinched her fingertips hard, and before Jiang Jinyi could discover her, returned to the hospital.

Then she timed it precisely, stepping back out of the consultation room to meet Jiang Jinyi face to face.

“Jiejie, the checkup required fasting, and you hadn’t eaten anything this morning. I wanted to bring you something in advance, but I was afraid it would go cold and wouldn’t be good for you — so I went out and bought you porridge.”

“The checkup’s all done, right? Can we leave the hospital now? Then let’s hurry back to the car, okay? I’m afraid it’ll cool off.”

Perhaps because she’d just fallen in the snow, there were still fine flecks of it clinging to Jiang Jinyi’s clothes and hair, and her body carried the sharp chill of winter — but her eyes were truly warm, truly bright.

Jiang Youwan had, in fact, already made plans of her own: after the checkup, she would take Jiang Jinyi to see the authority on gland medicine whom she knew. But now she couldn’t bring herself to say it.

She didn’t want to shatter the blazing, sun-bright enthusiasm of this moment.

The moment the gland came up, she would surely grieve, and hurt, and shrink into herself.

Jiang Youwan agreed. “All right. Let’s go back to the car.”

For the whole of that walk, Jiang Jinyi never once drew her hands back into her pockets — and neither did Jiang Youwan. Several times Jiang Youwan deliberately brushed the backs of her fingers against Jinyi’s, but was never once taken hold of.

She’d been so clingy this very morning — begging for hugs, begging to bury her face in her chest — and now she wouldn’t even hold hands.

“Jiejie, your hands will get cold if you leave them out.” She wouldn’t hold hands, and yet she still remembered to remind Jiang Youwan to tuck hers into her pockets.

“Then why are yours out?” If anyone feared the cold, it was a tender little thing like Xiao Jin — she ought to be far more afraid of it than Youwan was.

“In case jiejie slips and falls. I can catch you right away.” Jiang Jinyi said it in a very small voice.

So considerate she embarrassed even herself.

“Truly a little fool.” Jiang Youwan chided her softly, then took her hand. Jiang Jinyi instinctively tried to pull free. “My hands are freezing.”

Jiang Youwan forbade it with imperious firmness, and tucked her hand, captured, into her own pocket together with hers.

    “No squirming.”

    …

Jiang Jinyi had wrapped the porridge in two layers of thermal bags, and it was still warm when it reached Jiang Youwan’s mouth — warm enough to spread through her whole body, and into her heart.

“Is jiejie going back to the company?”

Jiang Youwan nodded. “Mm. There’s still a great deal to handle.”

“Don’t wear yourself out, jiejie.” Jiang Jinyi said, aching for her.

Jiang Youwan took another spoonful of porridge, not looking at her, and said, meaning unclear, “Xiao Jin doesn’t know — these two months back at work, jiejie has been very tired.”

Jiang Jinyi went still, and said nothing.

She knew. Anything she said would be useless.

Jiang Youwan saw her deflation, and it hurt to watch. She added softly, “But these past few days have been much better.”

The subtext was plain as day: because these past few days, Xiao Jin had been there with her.

Jiang Jinyi froze — and then those dimmed eyes lit up all over again. She clenched her fists, more determined than ever that her gland must heal quickly, so she could give Jiang Youwan more, and better, comfort.

Back at Su Corporation, once Jiang Jinyi had left, Jiang Youwan summoned the authority on gland medicine.

“I have a general picture of her condition. The wound has essentially healed, but the gland’s function is impaired — or sealed off.”

“In cases like this, to my knowledge, some patients recover through medication, some through instrument therapy. The odds for both are decent — but full recovery through those routes is still difficult.”

“But from what I’ve observed, there is another group of patients who recover through stimulation by their partner’s pheromones.”

“Pheromone stimulation? She can’t smell my pheromones at all right now, can she?” Jiang Youwan asked.

“She truly can’t smell them. But you can release your pheromones while seducing her, caressing her — and best of all, arousing her desire and taking her to bed. Sexual desire and the gland are deeply intertwined; stimulating desire stimulates the gland, and through that, the gland can recover.”

“Survey data shows this method generally succeeds with couples who are deeply in love and whose pheromone compatibility is very high.”

“You’re already three months along, and the baby is very stable — you can, you know, do that.” The doctor coughed lightly twice, then looked at Jiang Youwan. “Your pheromone compatibility is that high, and you love each other that much. I think — you two could try.”

Listening, Jiang Youwan’s eyes narrowed, and the corner of her mouth curved, as she turned it over, plotting something.
