    Missing Memories

    Didn’t Sleep Well

Jiang Jinyi ended up washing off all the lipstick marks on her face. Instead of going back to her own room, she blushed and slipped into Jiang Youwan’s room, where the scent of datura flowers still lingered. Jiang Jinyi found it especially comforting. She’d only meant to sit on the beanbag, but before she knew it, she couldn’t resist burrowing under Youwan’s covers. Xiao Yu watched her from the headboard with curious eyes, making Jiang Jinyi even more embarrassed. She buried her face and refused to come out.

The whole morning, she only confirmed one thing: she was going to celebrate Jiang Youwan’s birthday.

    In Jiang Jinyi’s memory, she’d only celebrated Youwan’s birthday once—her twenty-fourth.

Back then, Youwan had just arrived at the Jiang family. No one remembered her birthday. Jiang Jinyi didn’t remember either. She only discovered it by chance half an hour before the day ended, then frantically video-called her to say happy birthday.

As for the four birthdays after that… because of her amnesia, Jiang Jinyi couldn’t recall how she’d celebrated them.

How they were held. What gifts she’d given.

    She wished she could remember…

But no matter how hard she tried, she still couldn’t recall a single thing from those four years.

A WeChat message notification pulled her out of her thoughts. She nervously fished out her phone. It was from Jiang Youwan: 【Awake? Jiejie just got off the plane.】

Jiang Jinyi rolled over onto her stomach and quickly replied: 【I’m awake.】

She wasn’t a sleepyhead—there was no way she’d still be in bed this close to afternoon.

    【Oh. Did you like jiejie’s gift?】

What gift? That pile of hickeys? They were super hard to wash off!

Jiang Jinyi puffed out her cheeks and typed rapidly: 【Hate it!! Xiao Yu gave me the weirdest look this morning! If I’d gone downstairs without looking in the mirror, the servants would’ve died laughing!】

She was saying angry words, but the corners of her mouth wouldn’t stop curling up.

【Does Xiao Jin not want them to know jiejie kissed you?】 Jiang Youwan countered, sending a meme of Xiao Yu squinting in judgment.

There was a hint of accusation in it, like she was saying: “You don’t want anyone to know I’m your girlfriend? You don’t want to go public?”

Jiang Jinyi thought: That’s not it at all.

It was just that there were too many marks. She’d almost died of embarrassment when she looked in the mirror just now. How could she let anyone see her like that?

If she went out looking like that, it’d make the news!

She didn’t want to answer that question. She dodged it and asked with a hint of grievance: 【You’re going on a business trip and you didn’t even tell me…】

Really, Youwan could feel her委屈 through the screen.

Jiang Youwan tilted her head to look at the foreign scenery outside the car window, a little regretful that she hadn’t just tied up her Xiao Jin and brought her along. As she thought about it, a scene popped into her head:

Xiao Jin was still asleep. She’d tied her up, blindfolded her, and put her in the back seat. When she woke up to a strange environment, she’d be so scared she’d cry, willing to pay any price to prove that Youwan wouldn’t hurt her—for example, selling her body.

Ah, just thinking about it was so thrilling.

    What a shame, really.

Jiang Youwan held down the voice message button and deliberately used that flirtatious nasal tone. 【Feeling wronged? Missing jiejie, huh? Did Xiao Jin’s biology teacher ever say that if an alpha misses an omega and can’t see or hold her, she can go somewhere that smells like her? Like her room, her bed, or her closet—bury herself in her clothes, and it’ll ease the longing. I bet Xiao Jin is in jiejie’s—】

    !

Jiang Jinyi frantically shut off the voice message and threw her phone to the far end of the bed, covering her face, too afraid to listen anymore!

She seriously suspected Jiang Youwan had installed a camera in her room and was watching her right now!

At the thought, Jiang Jinyi couldn’t stay there a second longer. She scrambled out of the room and fled.

The weather wasn’t great that day. A huge mass of dark clouds dominated the sky, the air thick and oppressive, threatening rain at any moment. Jiang Jinyi came out of a building carrying a box and some tools. Xu An followed behind her, carrying far more things.

    Clothes, shoes, skirts, and desserts.

No idea who they were for.

Jiang Jinyi looked up at the sky, then turned to Xu An. “Feels like it’s going to rain.”

“I wonder if Ji Xiaoqin is done with work. If it rains and she has no way home, I’ll go pick her up.” Xu An said this as she loaded the things into the trunk. Jiang Jinyi very proactively climbed into the back seat, leaving the passenger seat for whoever was coming later, and didn’t call Xu An out.

She set the small box she’d been carrying on her lap, couldn’t resist opening the lid a crack to peek inside, then poked a finger in. It was like she got bitten—she yanked her hand back quickly.

Then she stroked the box, unable to suppress the smile on her face.

She smiled the whole way, not saying a word. Neither of them, both alphas, teased the other.

Halfway through the drive, the sky indeed opened up with heavy rain. Jiang Jinyi looked out the window. Big, fat raindrops slammed against the glass, blurring the view. The phone in her hand suddenly buzzed. She picked it up—it was a message from Jiang Youwan.

【It seems to be raining in Luo City. Is Xiao Jin at home? Don’t get caught in the rain. Jiejie isn’t there to take care of you, so look after yourself. Don’t catch a cold. If you catch a cold, jiejie won’t kiss you anymore.】

    Won’t kiss you, won’t kiss you…

Jiang Youwan always said these ambiguous things. What kind of “kiss” did she mean…

Part of her was troubled, part of her felt warm. Jiang Youwan was in Country A working, but she already knew it was raining here. That showed how much she cared, how much she paid attention…

Jiang Jinyi hadn’t just realized that Jiang Youwan cared about her. Youwan had been like this five years ago too—very attentive to every little thing about her, remembering the weather, her classes, her preferences, her little quirks, the food she casually mentioned wanting to eat, the places she wanted to go.

She put up with all of Jinyi’s little tantrums and rarely got angry.

She was simply the best jiejie in the world. Back then, Jiang Jinyi, who never bothered to show off, couldn’t help bragging to her classmates about having a jiejie like that.

    Her classmates were so envious.

Back then, their most intimate act was hugging. Youwan really liked hugging her.

Recalling the past, a thought that had never occurred to her before suddenly popped into Jiang Jinyi’s mind: Had Jiang Youwan already been…

Coveting her body back then? Wanting her to do that kind of thing to her…

Just as she was blushing furiously, a sudden brake jolted Jiang Jinyi. She heard Xu An mutter “Fuck” under her breath, then open the door and get out without even grabbing an umbrella. Jiang Jinyi looked out the window and saw Ji Xiaoqin taking shelter under an eaves, looking distressed. And standing in front of her was none other than Wen Ye.

“Fuck your mother, Wen Ye, what the hell are you doing?” Xu An stormed up furiously. Wen Ye turned at the sound and was immediately shoved hard by Xu An, putting distance between her and Ji Xiaoqin.

Wen Ye frowned at the shove. Xu An was bristling like an angry cat, not holding back her curses: “How do you still have the face to get near her? Deadbeat player, you’re fucking shameless!”

Seeing that Xu An was angry, Ji Xiaoqin quickly stepped forward and grabbed her arm, saying urgently, “I’m fine. She didn’t do anything to me.”

Seeing Ji Xiaoqin rush to soothe Xu An like that, a nameless anger flared in Wen Ye’s chest. She covered it with a sneer. “Miss Xu, why are you in such a hurry? How rude. I just saw it was raining and Xiaoqin didn’t have an umbrella. I wanted to give her a ride home.”

Xu An spat. “She doesn’t need a ride from you. Bad luck!”

“Ah.” Wen Ye looked thoughtful. “So what Miss Xu said last time was a lie? You said it was just friends lending money to help out, but now you’re this possessive. Are you actually using that debt to control Xiaoqin, forcefully keeping her as your private property? You’re snapping at someone just for offering her a ride home. How is that any different from keeping her?”

Xu An’s eyes went wide. She immediately looked at Ji Xiaoqin’s reaction. Xiaoqin was looking at her with a pleading expression, as if begging her not to get angry. That look always made Xu An’s heart soften, but she hated it.

    She really hated it.

    “You…”

Wen Ye smiled. “Ah, caught red-handed and furious? Did I hit a nerve? Xiaoqin, being controlled by someone with her bad temper and bad manners—you’d be better off being kept by me. I’ll be gentler with you than she is.”

Jiang Jinyi couldn’t stand listening anymore. She grabbed two umbrellas and got out of the car, making sure she was well covered so not a drop of rain touched her—just as Jiang Youwan had told her. She handed the other umbrella to Ji Xiaoqin and said to Wen Ye, “You’re not allowed to sow discord. Xu An knows how despicable you are, that’s why she’s in a hurry to protect Ji Xiaoqin. Why are you so mean? It makes people hate you.”

Hearing Jiang Jinyi’s voice, Wen Ye turned her head. Her expression froze for a moment. She looked at Jinyi for a while, then her smile deepened. “Xiao Jin used to like me so much, and you still turned your back on me. When you remember what kind of person your jiejie really is, will you be able to turn your back on her too?”

Jiang Jinyi was confused. She frowned. “What are you talking about?”

“Don’t listen to her bullshit.” Xu An was startled. She immediately cut off the conversation between Jinyi and Wen Ye, opened her umbrella, grabbed Ji Xiaoqin’s hand, and walked into the rain. Jiang Jinyi’s eyes held doubt. She gave Wen Ye’s meaningful smile one last look, then turned and followed Xu An back to the car.

Jiang Jinyi climbed into the back seat. Xu An was driving, her mood clearly very low. Ji Xiaoqin sat in the passenger seat, looking at a loss, constantly watching Xu An’s profile. She opened her mouth, wanting to comfort her but not knowing how.

Or maybe, with Jiang Jinyi there, she didn’t dare to say anything too intimate.

It wasn’t until the car stopped at the Jiang family villa and Jiang Jinyi got out that Ji Xiaoqin finally gathered her courage. She leaned over and wrapped her arms around Xu An’s neck, burying her face in her chest.

Xu An froze. This was the first time Ji Xiaoqin had been this proactive with her. Her heart pounded like a drum. She didn’t know what to do, didn’t know where to put her hands.

Ji Xiaoqin said, “Don’t listen to Wen Ye’s nonsense. You’re allowed to control me.” Her voice grew softer. “Because you’re my… neige1.”

During the drive, Wen Ye’s words kept echoing in Jiang Jinyi’s mind, leaving her confused and full of questions.

But it didn’t last long. Once Jiang Jinyi entered the house, her attention shifted entirely to Xiao Yu.

Xiao Yu was lying on the carpet like a flat pancake. At the sound of movement, it lifted its head. Seeing Jiang Jinyi, it immediately rolled over and trotted over to rub against her legs.

Jiang Jinyi could never resist a kitten acting cute. She immediately picked it up and rubbed it.

It was the cat Jiang Youwan had given her—the little angel Youwan had sent to tie her heart down.

Jiang Jinyi realized she missed Jiang Youwan again. How could she miss her this much? It had only been a day, and she already missed her like crazy.

Way more than last time when she went to Beicheng. Back then, she hadn’t missed Youwan this much even after ten days apart, but now two or three days felt unbearable.

Was this what it meant to like someone? Was Jiang Youwan thinking about her right now? Maybe she was still busy with work. Jiang Jinyi imagined her in a suit—beautiful, sharp, sexy. She could definitely charm a lot of people.

Foreigners were so open. Maybe someone was confessing to her right now.

    …Hmph.

Later that evening, Jiang Jinyi decided to wash up. She opened the cabinet to look for a nightgown, and as she rummaged, she accidentally noticed that several pieces of clothing she’d worn recently were missing. Puzzled, she called a servant to ask. The servant thought for a moment and said, “President Jiang might have taken them. She went into miss’s room a couple of days before she left.”

    Jiang Youwan took them?

Why would Jiang Youwan take her clothes on a business trip?

Jiang Jinyi dismissed the servant. She seemed to have found a reason to message Jiang Youwan. She picked up her phone, typed and deleted for several minutes, then sent: 【Did you take my clothes? The skirt I wanted to wear tomorrow is gone!】

From the moment she sent the message, Jiang Jinyi started waiting anxiously, her palms sweating. The moment WeChat popped up with a reply, she actually jumped—so embarrassing.

If Jiang Youwan knew she was this nervous waiting for her message, she’d definitely laugh at her.

    Jiang Youwan just replied: 【Mm-hmm.】

Then came a video call. Jiang Jinyi’s heart trembled. She panicked and ran to the mirror to fix her bangs, then sat on the sofa holding her phone. She thought she’d wait a few more seconds before answering, but before two seconds passed, she picked up.

Jiang Youwan’s captivating face appeared on the screen.

She was leaning back on the bed, her hair still a little damp, clearly just out of the shower. She wore a hotel bathrobe, and she seemed to be holding something in her arms, resting.

After a closer look, Jiang Jinyi recognized that the thing in her arms was one of her missing pieces of clothing.

Jiang Jinyi stared at the clothes in her arms, her cheeks flushing.

“What’s wrong? Is jiejie taking a few of your clothes making you mad?” Jiang Youwan used that flirtatious nasal tone, which was especially ticklish through the screen.

“Why would you take them? You’re not going to wear them.” Jiang Jinyi pouted, trying to fish for information.

“Can’t I take them if I’m not going to wear them?” A smile curled at the corner of Jiang Youwan’s lips. Her gaze was extremely suggestive, with a hint of pleading. “Jiejie wants them. Will you give them to me?”

At those words, Jiang Jinyi felt her heart skip a beat, then a wave of heat rushed to her face. Oh no, she realized a problem.

What she couldn’t resist most wasn’t a kitten acting cute—it was jiejie acting cute.

And with that kind of ambiguous wording.

“Xiao Jin blushes so easily?” Jiang Youwan teased. “If you’re this shy when you’re in a relationship, how will you manage? Your girlfriend teases you and you explode. She kisses you and you melt. When you’re making love to your girlfriend, will you be so embarrassed you cry while you’re doing it?”

Jiang Jinyi’s eyes went wide. “That’s not true!”

The red spread quickly from her face to her neck and ears. Her earlobes in particular looked especially tempting. Jiang Youwan leaned closer to the screen, and whether intentionally or not, licked her lips, looking like she wanted to take a bite.

“A pure little alpha like Xiao Jin will get drained dry by an omega—”

“Beep—” The call was cut off.

Jiang Jinyi had grown up in an environment where she’d hardly ever heard this kind of dirty talk, let alone had Jiang Youwan say it to her in such a seductive tone. She couldn’t take it. Embarrassed to the point of steam rising from her head, she fumbled and hung up.

    “…”

Jiang Jinyi threw herself onto the bed and buried her face in the covers. The heat on her face wouldn’t go down. Her palms were sweaty and sticky. All Jiang Youwan’s fault.

But… she kind of regretted hanging up. Even though she was shy, she really hadn’t had enough of looking at Jiang Youwan.

Jiang Jinyi turned the air conditioning down a lot. After waiting a few dozen seconds for her face to cool down a bit, she called Jiang Youwan back.

It was picked up in one second.

Jiang Jinyi buried the lower half of her face in the covers. Jiang Youwan was laughing on the screen. Jiang Jinyi thought she must be laughing at her.

Jiang Youwan said softly, “I won’t tease you anymore. If I tease you any more, you’ll really explode, and jiejie won’t have her Xiao Jin anymore.”

Jiang Jinyi didn’t want to talk to her.

“I’m sorry. Can you forgive jiejie?” Jiang Youwan’s apology was very sincere, and she offered a very tempting condition. “I’ll use myself as collateral. When I get back, I’ll grant Xiao Jin one condition. Any condition, no matter how excessive.”

Even as she said she’d grant an excessive condition, Jiang Youwan herself looked expectant and delighted.

Jiang Jinyi blinked and buried her face deeper. Jiang Youwan asked if she wasn’t suffocating. They chatted for a while, then Jiang Jinyi said she wanted to take a shower.

“Mm, but can you not hang up? Wait until you’re done showering and ready to sleep. Jiejie wants to say goodnight to you in person.”

Jiang Jinyi listened to her and didn’t hang up. She set the phone flat on the table, then went to find her nightgown and entered the bathroom.

She turned on the showerhead and applied body wash. The room was very quiet, with only the sound of the water. But at some point, a woman’s voice, rising and falling, mixed in with the water—a tone that sounded both pained and pleasurable. It was very faint, hard to catch. Jiang Jinyi thought she might be hearing things, but she wanted to be sure. Almost against her will, she turned off the shower and listened carefully.

With the water off, it became clearer…

She stood frozen for a long moment, then her face flushed bright red. As innocent as she was, she could recognize what that was. Besides, she’d heard it a few days ago.

Realizing she’d been listening a little too intently, she quickly turned the shower back on, cranked it to full blast, and completely drowned out the sound.

She showered for half an hour. When she came out, the sound was gone. Jiang Jinyi returned to the bed and picked up her phone. On the screen was Jiang Youwan’s profile as she lay in bed. Jiang Jinyi saw that Youwan’s surroundings were covered in her clothes—the pillow was lined with them. She’d probably just buried her face in them.

Jiang Jinyi’s jaw tightened. She said softly, “I’m done washing…”

At the sound, Jiang Youwan turned her head. Her cheeks were flushed with an unusual pink, her lips slightly parted, and her chest was heaving heavily.

“Xiao Jin is done?” Her voice was a little hoarse, low and sexy.

    “…Mm.”

Jiang Youwan leaned closer to the screen, smiling seductively. “Goodnight, Xiao Jin. Jiejie is going to take a shower and then sleep.”

“Goodnight…” Hadn’t she already showered? Why again? Jiang Jinyi didn’t dare ask what Jiang Youwan had just been doing.

With a “beep,” the call ended. Jiang Jinyi pressed the phone to her chest and couldn’t calm down for a long time.

Every time she opened or closed her eyes, she heard that sound from just now.

After about five or six minutes, she picked up her phone again. This time, she didn’t open the chat with Jiang Youwan. Instead, she went to Baidu.

“If an omega takes an alpha’s clothes on a business trip, what does that mean?”

A bunch of answers popped up. Clearly, many clueless alphas had asked this question before.

Jiang Jinyi picked the most upvoted answer:

【Of course it means that omega likes that alpha. Likes her a lot. You could even say loves her. Because she loves her, she becomes dependent on her, and dependent on her pheromones. If she’s going on a business trip, she won’t be able to see the one she loves for days, so she thinks about taking her clothes with her. At night, she can fall asleep smelling her pheromones, imagining that the one she loves is right beside her.】

【Also, if it’s a high-level omega, their needs in that area are stronger. If she’s going on a business trip and can’t see her alpha for days, she has to take care of herself. I’ve heard that using clothes stained with an alpha’s pheromones makes it more pleasurable. So…】

    ……

That answer kept Jiang Jinyi up all night.
