    Hidden in Her Arms

    Eating Alone

Jiang Jinyi thought she’d misheard, and she glanced down on reflex. “Jiejie, what did you say?”

Youwan’s brows knit faintly as she put the feeling into words. “It feels a bit full… a little uncomfortable.”

Was she really starting to lactate?

That was one reason a completely marked omega needed her alpha so desperately: even in pregnancy, an omega only lactates with her alpha’s pheromones. Without them, she could carry all the way to term and still have no milk at all.

No alpha pheromones, and the baby would never taste its mother’s milk.

And if she truly was lactating, then alpha pheromones must have fused with her own, deep inside her body. Which meant… her pheromones were back!

“Jiejie!” Starlight flooded Jinyi’s eyes. She was so overjoyed her hands didn’t know where to rest, and they found Youwan’s.

Watching her — delighted, excited, utterly at a loss — Youwan found her adorable, and her own heart lifted. She praised her without a shred of restraint. “How did my Xiao Jin get so amazing? Making Jiejie so proud.”

“One single night of Jiejie’s treatment, and it works this fast?”

“No wonder I’ve been feeling… mm, a little strange.” Jinyi’s eyes shone crystal-bright. She couldn’t help turning around, offering her nape to Youwan of her own accord. “Jiejie, smell — can you smell my pheromones?”

It was the first time in all these days that Jinyi had willingly bared her nape, willingly let Youwan come close. Youwan’s gaze went soft all the way through. She steadied her and breathed in, earnestly.

Perhaps because the space before had been too wide, or because she hadn’t deliberately leaned in — but now, in the cramped interior, pressing close on purpose, Youwan truly caught the scent of hyacinth. Faint still, yet beside the nothing of before, an enormous leap forward.

Hyacinth — the scent Youwan had craved with desperate intensity all these days. Marked, yet robbed of it through three months of days and nights, she genuinely didn’t know how she had survived them.

She breathed until she was half addicted, as if to make up every missed moment. Her palm slid around from behind to hold Jinyi’s jaw, keeping the scent exactly where she commanded it, savoring it in slow, fine draughts.

Warm breath scattered across her nape in a dense, prickling tickle. Jinyi found it hard to bear. “Jiejie — is there a scent?”

“There is… of course there is. Xiao Jin’s pheromones smell so sweet…” Youwan’s eyes were lowered, her voice gentle, soothing away fear — but in her gaze lived a touch of unhinged fascination, like an addict who’d failed to quit breathing in the poppy’s scent once more. For a good long while, she could not tear herself away.

She forbade Jinyi to move while she analyzed the scent with utter seriousness: hyacinth laced with a whisper of datura, exactly as it had been before the gland was carved out — announcing to absolutely everyone that she was already taken.

    Look. She was still hers.

Only, the scent wasn’t quite strong enough — nothing like right after the complete marking. Youwan resolved in secret: once she was fully well, she would have to mark her many, many times over.

Youwan bent and dropped kisses upon that nape, tiny careful pecks, cherishing. “How does it feel, Xiao Jin?”

“Being kissed by Jiejie feels so nice.” Jinyi burned with embarrassment — that was all she could produce after thinking forever.

“Jiejie feels wonderful too.” The comfort those pheromones poured into her body truly enchanted her — and deepened her terror of ever going back to those days, marked yet without her.

She knew how gravely Xiao Jin’s body had weakened since the gland was damaged. An Alpha cannot live without her gland; only with it back would her body mend — and only then could she stay at her side for a very, very long time.

A treasure lost and regained: Youwan couldn’t help but kiss her, cherish her.

Suddenly, two warm droplets fell onto her nape. Jinyi blinked, realized — started to look back — and Youwan held her still.

“Did I say you could move?” There was steel in it.

Between kisses, she issued her warning in a thread of a sob: “Your body is not yours — it belongs to Jiejie. If you ever dare hurt yourself again, you’ll regret it.”

Jinyi’s heart clenched; her eyes stung. “I won’t. Never again…”

The car was still moving; beyond the windows lay the glittering heart of Luo City’s downtown. Kiss after kiss had left Jinyi’s face burning — but she understood Jiejie’s mood, and she obediently let her look, let her smell, let her taste.

The hospital wasn’t far from Youwan’s flat; in under ten minutes the car drew up before its doors. Only then did Youwan release her gland. Unhurried, she wound the creamy-white bunny scarf around Jinyi’s neck, gave it a gentle tug once it was done — and Jinyi tilted her face up to hers and stole a kiss.

“Let’s go. We’ll see what the doctor says.”

Inside the hospital, at Jinyi’s insistence, Youwan put on the custom mask Jinyi had made for her. It was white and just a little bit cute, yet it didn’t diminish Youwan’s mature woman1 poise in the slightest.

If anything, it left the strangest impression — the feeling that… there must be a sweet girl waiting for her at home.

After the battery of tests, in the moments before the doctor spoke, Jinyi was nervous — that fresh-from-illness blend of dread and hope while waiting for a verdict.

“Don’t be scared. Whatever it says, Jiejie is right here.” Youwan laced her fingers through hers and said it softly.

This was the first time Youwan had ever accompanied Jinyi to a gland exam. Before, Jinyi had resisted any mention of the gland with all her might — it stripped away her security; she’d been afraid of being found wanting. But now it was different. She knew Youwan would never look down on her — only ache for her.

It gave Jinyi back the feeling of the two of them together five years ago: with Jiejie beside her, there was nothing to fear. From the day Jiejie first stepped into her world, Jiejie had been her safety itself.

The results came quickly. Jinyi’s gland had indeed begun to recover, and the fevers came of the gland’s reactivation straining a body too frail to bear it. It was mending in the right direction — but there was one problem: recovery demanded constant stimulation, and with a constitution this weak, stimulation would very likely bring fever after.

“Her body is this weak…” Youwan frowned, and the grip on Jinyi’s hand gentled without her noticing — as if one ounce more pressure would crush her to pieces.

“Damaging the gland is like damaging a vital organ,” the doctor said with a reassuring smile. “Without it, an Alpha’s constitution inevitably weakens. She’s already recovering — her body will recover too. There’s no need to worry.”

“Is there any way to keep her from spiking a fever after stimulation?” If Xiao Jin ran a fever every single time, it would be pure torment — miserable to endure.

Even if Xiao Jin could bear it, Youwan couldn’t.

“Mm. Best to get a resistance injection shortly. She’ll need follow-up medication, and plenty of extra nutrition.”

Injections and pills — nothing to most people, but to a girl who needed medicine poured down her throat and wept at the sight of needles, it was pure torment. Honestly — such a poor little thing.

In the ward, Jinyi sat propped against the bed while the nurse swabbed her skin with alcohol and flicked the needle. A droplet beaded at the tip; Jinyi swallowed hard, her whole body going taut — resistance and fear written plain across her.

“Jiejie…” Youwan was right at her side. Jinyi shrank back and sank wholly into her embrace, and that “jiejie” came out sweeter and more pitiful than ever — begging to be babied.

Youwan sighed in fond exasperation. “Scared of one little shot, needing Jiejie to coax you through it — are you a little kid?”

At the nurse’s soft chuckle, Jinyi flushed with embarrassment, turned her eyes away, and pursed her lips.

It felt strange. During the hospitalization after her gland was carved out, she’d needed injections every single day — and she’d gone numb to them, unafraid. Yet the moment Youwan appeared at her side, she felt afraid again. Afraid of pain. Spoiled. Was this what they called being spoiled into acting up? Knowing full well that Youwan would dote on her, would coax her?

She reasoned with a perfectly straight face: five years ago she’d have thrown a screaming fit and refused the shot entirely, beyond all coaxing. Being this obedient already was impressive progress — what was so wrong with wanting a little comfort?

She declared, righteous as ever: “I do want you to coax me. So there.”

    “Okay~ coaxing you it is.”

Youwan held her other hand. One second before the needle slid into the back of it, Youwan leaned to her ear and murmured something only she could hear — and Jinyi went scarlet on the spot, her mind wiped clean except for those words. She never even felt the needle go in.

Good as gold: no fuss, no drama. She sat obediently until the nurse left and the ward door clicked shut.

“Jiejie, you…” The instant the door shut, Jinyi spun around, kneeling on the bed to face her.

Youwan was already undoing the buttons of her coat. Lashes low, lip caught between her teeth: “I think it’s soaked through… I was aching with fullness all through Xiao Jin’s exam…”

The fox fleece coat came off in short order; beneath it she wore a women’s suit. As those buttons came undone too, damp patches showed on the crisp white shirt.

“It was only a little fullness before… but after kissing Xiao Jin, it…” Youwan lifted her gaze — half reproach, half invitation — and chided softly: “This is all your fault.”

Jinyi’s eyes went glassy; heat crawled all over her face.

Milk supply depends not on the omega alone, but on the quantity of alpha pheromones. All that smelling and kissing in the car must have soaked plenty of pheromones into her body — and the supply had swelled to match.

“The doctor said you need more nutrition. And this happens to be very nutritious… be good. Come here.”

Jinyi’s long lashes trembled; her jaw tightened. She glanced at the firmly closed door and swallowed.

“Jiejie, the door doesn’t seem to have—” Before she could finish, Youwan’s hand cradled the back of her head and pressed her into her arms.

She drew the removed coat down over her head, veiling her whole body, hiding her away inside her own embrace.

This way, she could sneak her baby a feast eaten all alone.

No one would find out. No one could steal it. Every last drop was her baby’s.

Buried like this, every single breath was sweet milk laced with faint datura. Tempted past all endurance, Jinyi closed her lips over the milk-slicked cherry and gave an experimental bite. Youwan let out a soft hum, fingertips pinching tight, quietly scolding her for not knowing her own strength. She squeezed her earlobe by way of punishment.

But the punishment barely landed before the girl was fretfully asking why no milk would come — and Youwan cupped herself and squeezed it into her mouth.

So clumsy. No sense of pressure at all. What was the hurry?

“Hopeless…” Youwan bit her inner lip, cheeks burning crimson, as if barely enduring it. Yet in those lowered eyes shone nothing but doting indulgence, pure enjoyment. Her hand smoothed the back of Jinyi’s head, now and then lifting away the hair that fell across her face. Tenderly: “Is it stuffy in there?”

Jinyi was far too absorbed in savoring her treat to spare a thought for answers.

Even if it was stuffy — what did that matter?

“Do you know? When I first learned I was carrying our baby, Jiejie was a little worried — worried that if Xiao Jin never came back, with no pheromones, the baby would be born with nothing to drink.”

“And I’m still worried now…” Youwan’s enchanting voice curled through Jinyi’s ear. “Worried that Xiao Jin will drink it all up and leave the baby with none.”

At that, Jinyi’s drinking stalled. She lifted her face from the embrace and found Youwan watching her back with a gentle smile.

Their eyes met. Jinyi looked wronged; Youwan returned a puzzled glance, as if quite sure she had a point.

And she did have a point — breast milk was for babies. But Jinyi was in no mood for reason. From the very first drop, it had been hers; hers it should remain.

Her crisis sense sharpened — it felt as if her doting was about to be taken and shared. Provoked, she pouted, all but baring her teeth in open food guarding. When no coaxing came from Youwan, she petulantly ducked her head and drank faster — every last drop, leaving none for anyone.

Utterly fierce in guarding her food.

The bite stung; Youwan drew a sharp breath and scolded: “You bastard — you’re hurting Jiejie.”

Jinyi released at once and braced for the scolding. But faced with her wounded, pouting look, Youwan marveled at how the girl pushed her luck — and softened anyway. “No rush. Be good now — everything Jiejie has is yours, okay?”

Only then did Jinyi brighten, even a touch smug. See — Jiejie loved and spoiled her best of all.

She never noticed the laughter rippling through Youwan’s eyes.

At first Jinyi had tracked every footstep in the corridor, on guard against food thieves. Now she was so far gone she’d forgotten her own name. It was Youwan who warned her that someone seemed to be coming.

Jinyi panicked instantly, at a complete loss. Youwan, far more composed, pressed her down against her chest, drew the coat up higher, and swaddled her inside her embrace — hidden.

At the sound of the opening door, Jinyi squeezed her eyes shut and played asleep, face burning.

The nurse came in on tiptoe bearing a tray of pastries, set it where Youwan had indicated, and couldn’t help sneaking glances at them. Catching Youwan’s eye, she whispered, half sighing: “Jiejie, your Alpha certainly is clingy.”

Beneath the coat, Youwan’s hand stroked the burning, trembling little creature. She smiled.

    “She is. Hopelessly clingy.”
