    Xiao Jin’s Amnesia

    “Stop throwing a tantrum, I can’t take it…”

Jiang Jinyi slept deeply, very, very deeply, as though submerged in the ocean—quiet and fragile.

An unknown amount of time passed before she gradually felt some external force pulling at her. Two forces struggled against each other, and the pain in her body grew increasingly intense. The images in her dream blurred, dissipating like ash. She snapped her eyes open, met instantly by the glare of fluorescent lights.

She quickly squeezed them shut, then carefully opened them again. She felt like she hurt everywhere, so much that tears pricked her eyes. Struggling to prop herself up, she realized she was in a hospital with an IV needle inserted into the back of her hand.

She was all alone in the room. Disoriented, Jiang Jinyi quickly raised a hand and pressed the call bell. It wasn’t long before the door to the ward opened from the outside. Breaking into her line of sight was the woman from her dream just now, except she looked slightly different. She had become more mature, possessing greater elegance and charm.

No matter how much she had changed, seeing her made Jiang Jinyi’s anxiety over being left alone in the hospital room recede significantly.

Jiang Youwan stood in the doorway, her eyes rimmed red. Her gaze did not leave Jiang Jinyi, who was leaning against the head of the hospital bed, for even a second. She stumbled slightly as she walked over. She wanted to show her concern, yet feared that doing so would agitate Jiang Jinyi into a disgusted frenzy. So, she stood silently by her side, watching the doctor examine her.

Jiang Jinyi was very afraid of pain. She cried out several times during the doctor’s examination, and every time the pain flared, she looked at Jiang Youwan with a pitiful, pleading gaze.

She didn’t understand why Jiang Youwan wasn’t coming over to coax her, why she wasn’t coming over to comfort her. At a time like this, she should be pulling her into her arms.

Was Jiang Youwan upset with her? Jiang Youwan never got upset with her.

Meeting her gaze, Jiang Youwan felt a bitter, throbbing ache in her chest, as if her heart were taking a heavy blow. She clenched her fists, exercising extreme restraint just to resist the urge to step forward and embrace her.

It took a while for the doctor to finish the examination. Her body had suffered no major harm, and her wounds were all superficial. The doctor paused, intending to call Jiang Youwan outside to speak, when Jiang Jinyi on the bed suddenly called out to her in a weak voice, “Jiang Youwan…”

Jiang Youwan’s heart skipped a beat. She walked slowly to the bedside, her gentle expression laced with a trace of tension as she asked softly, “Are you feeling very uncomfortable?”

Jiang Jinyi let out a hum and nodded, looking incredibly delicate. She raised a hand and tugged at her sleeve, gesturing for her to sit down.

“I feel awful, my body hurts so much…” At this whiny, coquettish tone, Jiang Youwan froze for a moment. Following the pull of her hand, she sat down on the edge of the bed.

Looking at Jiang Jinyi’s tearful eyes, her heartache was beyond measure.

She assumed Xiao Jin was simply too frightened and in too much pain, which had led to this brief moment of reliance on her.

Forcing down the tremor in her voice, she comforted her, “It’s alright, everything is fine now. It will stop hurting very soon.”

Jiang Jinyi whined petulantly, “It hurts…”

No matter how much Jiang Youwan tried to suppress it, she couldn’t hide her loss of composure or the tearful catch in her voice. Her eyes were completely bloodshot. Jiang Jinyi had never seen her like this and began to suspect she herself had contracted some terminal illness and wasn’t long for this world.

Her heart, having endured the full brunt of her cold words and harsh attacks, was suddenly met with this coquettish softness. Like a soothing balm, it made Jiang Youwan completely break down.

“Does it hurt a lot?” Her voice was a little deep.

    Jiang Jinyi nodded. “So much…”

“If it hurts, then be a little more obedient from now on, alright?”

Unable to restrain herself, she pulled Jiang Jinyi into an embrace. Jiang Jinyi couldn’t see the near-madness in Jiang Youwan’s eyes; she only sensed that the other woman wanted to hold her fiercely, yet, terrified of hurting her, merely locked her in a loose cage of arms.

“I’m begging you, come home with me, please?”

Be a little more obedient, come home with her, and let her protect her, so she wouldn’t have to suffer like this.

    “Stop throwing a tantrum, I really can’t take it…”

    ???

Jiang Jinyi’s face was forced into a patch of softness—plush and fragrant. She blinked. When had she refused to go home? What tantrum was she throwing?

Her heart was brimming with questions, but… Jiang Youwan was acting so out of character. She could feel her genuine terror and pleading. Jiang Jinyi didn’t understand, but she wanted to soothe her, to stop her from acting like this.

She blinked, her long eyelashes fluttering. “Okay…”

“I’ll go home with you, just… don’t be like this…”

Hearing this, Jiang Youwan’s body stiffened. Disbelief washed over her, followed by a delayed, overwhelming surge of joy.

The Xiao Jin in her arms wasn’t struggling, and had even promised to go home with her…

This was a beautiful dream that had visited her on so many nights, only to shatter completely the moment she woke up.

It didn’t feel real at all.

Carefully and with deep reverence, she savored the soft body and warmth in her embrace. Her every breath was saturated with the scent of hyacinths, leaving her utterly infatuated.

Jiang Youwan couldn’t believe it. She didn’t even dare to move, terrified that the slightest shift would shatter this dream.

She didn’t even dare to lower her head to confirm it with her, terrified she would be shoved away the very next second.

“What’s wrong with you?” Jiang Jinyi moved her hands, intending to push her away. But feeling Jiang Youwan’s resistance as she refused to let go, she stopped pushing. Obediently allowing herself to be held, she tipped her head back in her arms and looked at her with bewildered eyes.

Jiang Youwan’s eyes were damp and red, tears swirling within them. A single teardrop slid down her cheek, dripping from her chin to dampen Jiang Jinyi’s collar.

    “Why are you crying?”

Jiang Jinyi’s gaze was pure, devoid of any hatred or disgust. Her tone was completely soft, carrying a clingy, delicate sweetness, laced with some urgent concern for her.

“Don’t cry. You being like this is going to make me think I’m really about to die. Don’t scare me.”

Jiang Youwan couldn’t be more familiar with this coquettish tone.

Jiang Youwan’s long eyelashes trembled, her mind going momentarily blank. She slowly loosened the arms holding her and called out tentatively, “Xiao Jin?”

Jiang Jinyi raised the hand without the IV needle and gently brushed away another tear that slipped from the corner of Jiang Youwan’s eye. Jiang Youwan’s body went taut, her mind entirely blank, as she heard her say, “Only children cry. Are you a child?”

“Aren’t I perfectly fine? You acting like this makes me think I’ve caught some terminal illness. I don’t actually have a terminal illness, do I?” As she said this, Jiang Jinyi genuinely felt a little scared.

    Yet she remembered absolutely nothing.

Jiang Youwan immediately shook her head. With a hoarse, tearful voice, she said, “Xiao Jin doesn’t have a terminal illness. Xiao Jin is fine; these are all just superficial injuries.”

Jiang Jinyi breathed a sigh of relief, completely believing Jiang Youwan’s words. She comforted her, “Then what are you crying for? I thought something terrible happened to me. Alright, come on, stop crying.”

    Xiao Jin…

Jiang Youwan pinched her own fingers, which she had already pinched until they bled. It hurt. It really hurt. This wasn’t a hallucination.

She looked at Jiang Jinyi, trying to make her voice sound less shaky, and asked softly, “Does Xiao Jin still remember what happened before fainting?”

What had happened before she fainted?

Following her words, Jiang Jinyi frowned and tried to recall. She stammered, “I got out of school, you came to pick me up, um, and then, and then…” And then what had happened? Jiang Jinyi realized she was facing a total blank in her memory. Forcing herself to think gave her a splitting headache, making her intensely uncomfortable. “I don’t think I remember, my head hurts…”

    Picking her up from school?

Jiang Youwan couldn’t help but plunge into her memories. The last time she had the right to pick Xiao Jin up from school was five years ago, during Xiao Jin’s senior year of high school1.

    Could it be…

Jiang Jinyi’s head throbbed painfully. She raised a hand, wanting to hit her head, but Jiang Youwan restrained her. Pressing her hand down, Jiang Youwan said, “If you don’t remember, then don’t think about it. Let’s just not think about it for now…”

Jiang Jinyi looked up at her with grievance. “What in the world happened to me? My whole body feels awful. And you—how did you suddenly become so womanly?”

She scrutinized Jiang Youwan. Her face was just as she remembered it, but it had grown more alluring, possessing far more charm. Her figure, too, seemed to have become more voluptuous.

But the most prominent difference was her aura. It felt as though she had suddenly gone through a lot and become much more mature.

She didn’t know how to describe it; in short, she was simply different from before.

Jiang Youwan turned her head to look at the doctor, and the doctor gave a nod.

A realization exploded in her mind.

    Xiao Jin had amnesia…

    Xiao Jin had amnesia…

Was this a gift from heaven? Xiao Jin actually had amnesia.
