    Hints of Ambiguity

The Eldest Miss Actually Knew How to Say Sorry

    Does it smell sweet?

If she really had to say whether it smelled sweet or not, Jiang Jinyi felt it was nowhere near as fragrant as the roses blooming in her own garden.

But the scent was far too strong, making her feel slightly uncomfortable. It wasn’t the kind of distress that forced her into heat1, but rather a mild dizziness from the cloying, overbearing fragrance of roses.

“It’s too strong.” Jiang Jinyi took two steps back and turned away, her brow furrowing in discomfort. “Hurry up and pull it back.”

    Too strong?

Qin Yue had been watching her expression closely. It wasn’t hard to see that she was holding something back. Was she resisting her heat?

Was she saying that her pheromones were too strong, so she was about to lose control and go into heat?

Omegas and alphas were all like this; once enticed by the pheromones of someone they liked, they could easily lose control and slip into heat.

A faint smile played at the corners of Qin Yue’s lips, and she reined in her pheromones significantly.

“Don’t water them so much! You’ll drown them!” Jiang Jinyi interrupted Qin Yue, who was trying to water the flowers, snatching the watering can back from her hands.

Qin Yue frowned almost imperceptibly, then smiled as she apologized to Jiang Jinyi. “I was wrong. Forgive me, Xiao Jin.”

Jiang Jinyi kept her face taut. “I already told you to water them less.”

Her voice was clear and sweetβ€”soft, yet fierce.

Qin Yue offered a placating smile. “I was wrong. What will it take for Xiao Jin to forgive me?”

Jiang Jinyi ignored her and lowered her head to water the flowers. Her expression was cold, her cheeks puffed out like a pufferfish, obviously pouting. Qin Yue clung to her side. “How can I make Xiao Jin stop being mad?”

Qin Yue looked at her profile, thought for a moment, and said half-jokingly, “They say when a girl is angry, a kiss will make it all better.”

Hearing this, Jiang Jinyi finally looked up at her. Seeing her displeasure, Qin Yue laughed to cover her embarrassment. “Just kidding.”

But the hints and ambiguity in her eyes were already all too obvious.

Jiang Jinyi remained silent. Qin Yue patted her and said very seriously, “Alright, I’m sorry. Next time, I promise I’ll take good care of your precious flowers.”

Jiang Jinyi let out a “Hmph” and begrudgingly forgave her.

While the two of them were playing in the backyard, Qin Yue caught sight of a woman sitting in front of one of the villa’s floor-to-ceiling windows. She nudged Jiang Jinyi and asked, “Xiao Jin, who is that?”

Jiang Jinyi followed her gaze and saw Jiang Youwan sitting upright in front of the window, earbuds in her ears, focused on herself and not noticing them.

“She’s a guest my mother brought back,” she said softly after a moment’s thought.

    “Oh, I see.”

Probably because she was so beautiful, Qin Yue looked at Jiang Youwan a couple more times before finally withdrawing her gaze.

After Qin Yue left, Jiang Jinyi looked at that flower with distress for a long time. She even bent down and whispered an apology to it in a low voice.

The Eldest Miss actually knew how to say sorry.

The wealthy district was very quiet, with almost no sound except for the chirping of birds. The air was excellent, every breath filled with the fragrance of flowers. Summer was a very pleasant season, if a little hot and dry.

Jiang Youwan had been sitting by the window the entire time, wearing her earbuds, though nothing was actually playing in them.

Jiang Youwan had been at the Jiang family home for about a week now. She kept the promise she had made to Jiang Jinyi at the hospital that day. She was very well-behaved, never touching things that did not belong to her. Whenever she ran into her, she would politely call her “Miss Jiang” instead of “meimei” or “Xiao Jin” as a jiejie should.

This reduced some of Jiang Jinyi’s hostility toward her. Perhaps because she had wrongly accused her last time, Jiang Jinyi was no longer as arrogant as before, and her attitude toward her had improved by just a tiny bit.

But she still treated her as an intruderβ€”an enemy who had come to snatch the affection that belonged exclusively to her.

During the day, Jiang Jinyi spent most of her time either in the art studio or painting in the yard. The villa was quiet most of the timeβ€”so quiet that she could faintly hear the laughter and playful banter of the siblings next door. By contrast, Jiang Jinyi seemed a little lonely.

But she didn’t feel lonely; she had already been used to it for eighteen years.

Imagine living like this for eighteen years, only to suddenly gain a jiejie one day. There was no joy, only the irritation of having her life disrupted and the insecurity of having her position threatened.

Fortunately, her jiejie knew her place well, was very obedient, never overstepped, and never made her angry.

The weather was nice today, very cool and not at all stuffy. While the servants were tending to the flowers and plants in the backyard, Jiang Jinyi found a suitable spot and was painting.

She had changed into a pleated skirt, her long hair tied up in a high ponytail, looking youthful and noble in the sunlight. Sitting before her easel, she continued to paint, completely focused, meticulously detailing each stroke with utmost care.

    “Xiao Chen.”

Xiao Chen gently placed the dessert on the table in front of Jiang Youwan. “Hmm? Is something the matter?”

Jiang Youwan kept her head turned toward the window the entire time. Her eyes were closed, yet she gave the impression that she could see everything.

“Miss Jiang has been sitting there for a long time,” she said softly.

The direction Jiang Youwan was facing was precisely toward Jiang Jinyi.

Xiao Chen heard the inquiry in her words and explained, “Miss is painting. She’s an art student, so she paints every day, even on holidays.”

“Painting?” Jiang Youwan murmured, repeating the word as if she were thinking about something.

Xiao Chen glanced at the fully absorbed Jiang Jinyi, then leaned down close to Jiang Youwan, whispering conspiratorially, “Right now, Miss is painting a birthday gift for Miss Qin. She’s putting so much heart into it!”

Jiang Youwan asked in confusion, “Miss Qin?”

Xiao Chen said, “Miss Qin is the lady who came over to play with Miss last time.”

    The one from before.

Jiang Youwan naturally remembered. After a brief pause, she asked, “What is the relationship between Miss Qin and Miss Jiang?”

Xiao Chen showed a meaningful smile. “I didn’t expect you to be so gossipy, too.”

    Jiang Youwan remained noncommittal.

Xiao Chen stopped keeping her in suspense. Supporting her chin with one hand, she thought aloud, “She and Miss are friends, but I always feel like it’s a bit subtle.”

“It feels a bit like aimei2.”

    Aimei.

Jiang Youwan frowned. “What does aimei mean?”

“You actually don’t know what aimei means?” Xiao Chen was surprised, momentarily at a loss for words. “Aimei… aimei is…”

Xiao Chen organized her words for a moment and said, “Aimei is when two people are about to date, testing each other out before entering a relationship.”

    Jiang Youwan listened quietly.

Xiao Chen continued, “Miss Qin used to be Miss’s school senior and only recently graduated. They got along very well when they were in school. Miss probably purely thinks of her as a friend, but I always feel like Miss Qin likes Miss. It just so happens she recently differentiated into an alpha, but Miss still hasn’t caught on.”

“It’s almost Miss Qin’s birthday, and Miss is preparing Miss Qin’s gift right now. I guess when Miss Qin sees the gift and is deeply touched, she might not be able to resist confessing her feelings to Miss!”

Jiang Youwan seemed to zone out for a moment, and only after a long while did she part her lips, “Is that so?”

Xiao Chen nodded vigorously, “Mhm! I wonder if Miss will agree. I really can’t imagine what Miss would look like in a relationshipβ€”she’d definitely be so soft!”

Not long after, Xiao Chen left to tend to her own chores, leaving Jiang Youwan to sit alone in silence. She once again existed in a world of darkness and quiet.

The term “dating” was extremely foreign in Jiang Youwan’s world. This was the first time she had been so close to love, even though it had nothing to do with her.

The love of that Eldest Miss.
