    Cheering Her Up

    “I Am Not Your Jiejie”

Jiang Jinyi was pulled to the side of the road by Jiang Youwan. It was raining again—a fine, drizzling rain, drops tapping softly against their bodies. Jiang Jinyi bit her lip as Jiang Youwan dragged her into the car, and she tumbled onto the seat.

Red scratches marked her pale wrists. Jiang Jinyi could hardly believe it; the grievance in her heart swelled out of all proportion. Jiang Youwan had never been this fierce with her before. What gave Jiang Youwan the right?

She gritted her teeth and yelled at her: “Bastard!”

    Bastard?

Jiang Youwan followed her into the car, shut the door, then locked it—leaving her no chance to escape.

She looked down at her from above, seething. Less than an hour apart, and the little thing had already grown bold enough to go looking for a girlfriend, had she?

“You really want a girlfriend that badly?” she asked coldly.

“Yes!” Jiang Jinyi said indignantly. “I’m twenty-three years old and I’ve never even dated. What’s wrong with dating? It’s none of your business.”

Jiang Youwan narrowed her eyes, the danger in her gaze deepening, her voice dropping colder and lower. “Did you forget what you promised me?”

“You bastard? The promise you made to me doesn’t count the moment you turn around?”

    The promise…

Jiang Jinyi remembered. Back then, Youwan had made her promise: as long as Jiejie wasn’t dating, she wasn’t allowed to date either.

At that thought, her tone grew fiercer, her aggressive voice masking the sob breaking through. “You’re about to have a wife—why can’t I date?”

Despite her best efforts, the sob leaked out, painfully obvious.

    Jiang Youwan froze. “What wife?”

Jiang Jinyi herself didn’t know why she cared so much about Youwan having a wife, and the sob in her voice grew thicker. “I just slapped your wife, and instead of going to comfort her, you come here to bother me about whether I date or not?”

    Slapped your wife?

Jiang Youwan was stunned for half a second before finally understanding what this little bastard was making a fuss about.

The ice that had formed in her heart melted in an instant; the suppressed viciousness in her gradually settled.

She was throwing a fit because she’d misunderstood her about having a wife? Xiao Jin was as cute as ever.

“When did I ever say she was my wife?” A trace of laughter hid in Jiang Youwan’s words.

Jiang Jinyi’s gaze faltered, her volume dipping. “Aren’t you partnering with the Ye family? Aren’t you entering a marriage alliance with that Ye Xian?”

“Hmm? When did I say that? Who did Xiao Jin hear it from?”

Jiang Jinyi was taken aback. She lowered her head, her voice pitifully small: “Ye Xian said it…”

Her long hair fell to curtain her face, and her long, curling lashes trembled visibly, as if she were holding back tears.

Jiang Youwan couldn’t understand why this little bastard always looked so pitiful when she was the one in the wrong, as if she were the one being bullied.

“Bastard,” Jiang Youwan muttered under her breath. Jiang Jinyi seemed to protest the address; her cheeks puffed out again—that was her special way of expressing displeasure.

Why did she have to call her a bastard?

Jiang Youwan explained, “I never thought about a marriage alliance with her, and I don’t like her. She made it all up herself. Stop throwing a tantrum, okay?”

No marriage alliance, and she doesn’t like her…

Jiang Jinyi raised her eyes, her wet gaze meeting Jiang Youwan’s. “Really?”

Jiang Youwan said gently, “Really. Xiao Jin didn’t even hear it from Jiejie before running off and breaking our agreement on your own. That’s very naughty of you.”

Jiang Jinyi blinked. What should have been a comforting thing to hear only made her eyes sting more; tears she could no longer hold back spilled over, fat droplets rolling down as she began to cry.

    “Jiang Youwan…”

Jiang Youwan raised a hand to her cheek, pinching the soft flesh. “Hmm? How are you even more upset now?”

    “Jiang Youwan…”

“Did I cause you a lot of trouble in the past? Was I especially terrible?” Jiang Jinyi looked at her through teary eyes, her voice shaking badly. “The people around you don’t like me…”

“I hit her because she was trying to drive a wedge between us. She insulted me. I didn’t mean to run off and make you worry. I was just so angry. Seeing her hug you made me especially angry. I don’t like her, and I don’t like her getting close to you…”

“She said I was a burden to you. She said how did I still have the face to stay by your side. Jiang Youwan, do you hate me too? Have you long wanted to get rid of me?” As she spoke, the sob in her voice grew thicker.

Hearing this, Jiang Youwan furrowed her brow. A flash of cold fury crossed her eyes, but the viciousness was tucked away in an instant.

Jiang Jinyi continued crying as she spoke: “I don’t remember what I did wrong. I don’t know why…”

“I’m sorry, Jiang Youwan…” Seeing Jiang Youwan say nothing, Jiang Jinyi felt an inexplicable panic. She was afraid that once she laid everything bare, Jiang Youwan would really not want her anymore.

“You’re my jiejie. You—You can’t not want me, can’t be disgusted by me, can’t not want me. You’re my jiejie. What’s wrong with asking you to indulge me a little? To be more tolerant of me…?” The more she spoke, the more guilty she felt. She knew herself that she was being impossibly unreasonable, that no one could stand for this.

Jiang Youwan pressed her lips together without speaking. They looked at each other; the light inside the car was very dim. Jiang Jinyi couldn’t see the dark currents stirring in Jiang Youwan’s eyes. She began to overthink, even tried to look away. Suddenly, Jiang Youwan spoke:

    “I am not your jiejie.”

In an instant, Jiang Jinyi froze. The temperature inside the car plummeted. She half-parted her lips, unable to find her voice for a long while.

“You—you what?” When she spoke again, her voice was shaking badly. Tears that had barely dried welled up again. She didn’t wipe them away, simply staring at Jiang Youwan in a daze.

“I said, I am not your jiejie.”

Actually, Jiang Youwan had been repeating that sentence in her heart for a long time. At this moment, the thought bound at the deepest, darkest corner of her heart finally broke through its chains and was spoken aloud.

She didn’t want to see a second time the scene of Xiao Jin saying today that she wanted someone else to be her girlfriend. She didn’t want Xiao Jin to naively think they were only sisters. She could not hold back her need for Xiao Jin to belong to her truly, in the way a lover belongs.

Xiao Jin crying and saying all those jealous things was truly heart-stirring.

Her heart was pounding. She slowly leaned in toward Jiang Jinyi, saw the fear and helplessness in her eyes, and her heart ached even as a deeper part of her was glad. Xiao Jin valued her, but more than that, she was uneasy.

She was afraid Xiao Jin couldn’t accept it in the short term.

Jiang Jinyi tried to keep her voice from sounding so wretched. “Jiang Youwan, you… really don’t want me anymore? Am I really a burden to you, like they said?”

    “Silly girl.”

Jiang Youwan stopped teasing her. She cupped both hands around Jiang Jinyi’s cheeks, the heels of her palms pinching the soft flesh, and felt her trembling badly. Her own heart ached in turn.

Jiang Jinyi tried to turn her face away. Jiang Youwan wouldn’t let her. “Xiao Jin, listen to me, okay?”

Jiang Jinyi said nothing, but tears kept flowing.

Jiang Youwan helped her wipe her tears, her voice melting to the bone. “Jiejie isn’t leaving you, isn’t annoyed with you, doesn’t blame you.”

“Listen to Jiejie. When Mother brought me home, I wasn’t actually her biological child. She only said I was her biological daughter to take care of my feelings. Actually, we have no blood relation.”

Jiang Jinyi froze again. Her damp lashes lifted, eyes wide. “W-what?”

Jiang Youwan let out a soft sigh and smiled helplessly. “We actually have no blood relation. This has been public knowledge for four years now, but Xiao Jin lost your memory and forgot. When your memory first came back, Xiao Jin wasn’t in a good state, so Jiejie didn’t tell you. But now that Xiao Jin is doing better, Jiejie really wants to tell you.”

Jiang Jinyi was lost in shock, unable to find her voice for a long time.

    Her gaze was frozen, stunned.

The news was a little hard to digest.

Jiang Youwan gently lowered her head, pressing her forehead to Jiang Jinyi’s. Their lips were very close; each other’s breath was clearly audible. She added softly, “Even though we’re not biological sisters, Xiao Jin never has to worry that Jiejie will be annoyed with you, will leave you, or think you’re a burden. You can act spoiled with Jiejie with full confidence, throw tantrums with Jiejie, and enjoy Jiejie’s love as if it were the most natural thing in the world.”

“Do you know, all these years you were in Bei City, I barely got to see you. I was so anxious to drag you back and keep you by my side—how could I possibly think you’re a burden?”

“You will always be the most important person to Jiejie, more important than anyone. Be good, don’t be sad anymore, okay? It hurts Jiejie to see you cry too.” Jiang Youwan pulled her into her arms, cradled the back of her head, tenderness to the extreme.

She and Jiang Youwan were not biological sisters, and this had been public knowledge for four years.

Being held and soothed by Jiang Youwan like this, the sense of loss and unease from first hearing the news gradually smoothed away. She suddenly felt the matter wasn’t so hard to accept after all.

Her chin rested on Jiang Youwan’s shoulder. She sniffled softly and said in a small voice, “I-I hit that woman, and the cooperation between you and Ye Corporation fell through. All your hard work was for nothing. Don’t you blame me? What about Jiang Corporation?”

Jiang Youwan shook her head, nuzzling her cheek. “Jiang Corporation won’t fall. Jiejie won’t blame you. Don’t be sad.”

That sentence—”Jiejie doesn’t blame you”—was meant to comfort her, yet it struck Jiang Jinyi’s tear trigger dead-on. She buried her face in the crook of Jiang Youwan’s neck and cried in trembling little bursts. Bolstered by Jiang Youwan’s presence, she started tattling. “That woman, she was awful. She kept talking about me, saying you found me annoying, that you’d complained to her. Did you? Did you complain to her?”

“Really, silly girl.” Jiang Youwan gave her ear a punitive pinch. “Didn’t you know she was a bad person? And you still believed her words.”

    “Ugh…”

“Anything else you want to ask? Jiejie will answer everything, okay?”

    “We’re… really not biological sisters?”

“No. Mother took me in and treated me as her biological daughter back then, just to help me fit into this family better. Xiao Jin knew this before losing your memory. I didn’t tell you before because Mother had just passed, and I was afraid you couldn’t handle it. But now, Jiejie feels it’s necessary to tell you.”

    “…Okay.”

Jiang Youwan repeated once more: “Even so, don’t treat Jiejie as an outsider. You can still throw tantrums and act spoiled with full confidence, and enjoy Jiejie’s love as if it were the most natural thing in the world.”

Jiang Youwan knew the love she spoke of was not familial love.

She also knew that the present Xiao Jin couldn’t understand that.

Jiang Jinyi let out a soft “mm” and said nothing more.

After hugging for a little while longer, Jiang Youwan suddenly pushed her away, her expression shifting from the gentleness just now to a serious one. “Your questions are done. So now it’s my turn to ask, isn’t it?”

    Jiang Jinyi: “…”

    She suddenly felt very guilty.

“You said you wanted that alpha from earlier to be your girlfriend?” Jiang Youwan asked her.

“No… I was just saying that out of anger…” Jiang Jinyi guiltily lowered her head, a little afraid to look at her.

She herself didn’t realize that, even if she had wanted to date, there was nothing wrong with it; there was no need to feel this guilty.

“I’m not going to date her.”

“Little bastard.” Jiang Youwan said through gritted teeth. “It was raining and you still ran off. Do you know how worried I was?”

Jiang Jinyi only then noticed that her own cheek was a little wet—probably from Jiang Youwan’s hair brushing against her earlier. Looking more carefully, Jiang Youwan’s hair was wet and stuck to her face. She had been out in the rain.

She had been out in the rain looking for her.

Jiang Jinyi was overcome with guilt. She hurriedly used her sleeve to wipe Jiang Youwan’s face. “I’m sorry…”

“Let’s hurry home. What if you catch a cold?”

Jiang Youwan gave a soft hum of displeasure. “Is ‘I’m sorry’ all you’re going to say?”

Jiang Jinyi asked in a tiny voice, “Then what do you want?”

“What do I want?” Jiang Youwan laughed in exasperation. “Do I need to tell you?”

Jiang Jinyi gave an innocent “ah.”

Jiang Youwan lost her temper and said nothing more. She opened the car door, got out, then climbed into the driver’s seat. Once again, she locked the doors and started the car.

Jiang Jinyi sat in the back seat. No matter how she called out to her, Jiang Youwan wouldn’t respond—only a small hum or two at most to acknowledge. The roads were still slippery from the rain, and Jiang Jinyi didn’t dare disturb her further. She sat obediently, mentally calculating how to apologize later.

Jiang Youwan rarely got angry with her in the past, but it had happened. But she was easy to coax—as long as she tugged at her arm and acted cute, things were mostly fine.

This time, it should be the same… right?

About half an hour later, the car pulled into the garage of the Jiang Family Villa. Jiang Youwan, very much in a mood, opened the door and walked off first. Jiang Jinyi hurried after her. Little Fish came to paw at her leg, but she didn’t pay it any attention. Like a little tail, she called out to Jiang Youwan in a small voice and followed her up to the second floor.

Under the light, it was even more obvious that Jiang Youwan’s clothes and hair were wet. Her white shirt clung to her skin, transparent—her bra strap was even visible.

Before she knew it, she had followed her to the room.

She had always been able to enter Jiang Youwan’s room freely. The space was filled with a faint datura fragrance, very pleasant to smell.

“Jiang Youwan, I was wrong. Don’t ignore me, okay?”

“Jiang Youwan, I’ll never again say I want to date someone else.”

“Jiang Youwan, just pay attention to me, please. I’ll never run off again.”

    “Jiejie, Jiejie~”

Jiang Youwan acted as if she didn’t sense Jiang Jinyi’s existence. She took a nightgown from the wardrobe, picked out underwear, and prepared to go into the bathroom to wash up.

Being ignored this many times for the first time, Jiang Jinyi got a little annoyed. Without thinking, she followed her in a rush. Jiang Youwan suddenly stopped, and her forehead almost bumped into her back.

Jiang Youwan slowly turned her head. “What? You’re going to follow me into the bath too?”

Jiang Jinyi froze. Jiang Youwan didn’t give her a chance to speak, and teased: “Was calling you ‘bastard’ too light? Should I call you ‘little rogue’?”

Jiang Jinyi felt the temperature on her face rising and rising, and then she turned completely red.

She’d actually been stupid enough to follow someone into the bathroom.

So embarrassed, she instinctively wanted to turn and run. Jiang Youwan grabbed her by the back of her collar, pulling it down a little, exposing a tender, pink gland—clean and pure, never touched or defiled.

Jiang Youwan’s eyes darkened, and she lost herself for a moment, but Jiang Jinyi broke free.

Jiang Jinyi stammered: “Go take your shower quickly. Wearing wet clothes for too long and you’ll catch a cold.”

    “And I’m not a rogue.”

After saying that, she ran off.

Getting embarrassed so easily—Xiao Jin was really pure and cute.

Jiang Youwan watched her fleeing back and couldn’t help but sigh. The purer Xiao Jin was, the more it made Youwan feel filthy and dark in comparison.

How could Jiang Jinyi know that Jiang Youwan actually wanted her to go in and watch her shower?

Jiang Jinyi had been so focused on being Jiang Youwan’s little tail earlier that she hadn’t paid any attention to Little Fish pawing at her. Now she felt a little guilty, went to find Little Fish, held the cat in her arms, and gave it a good petting session. Then she went into the bathroom in her own room to wash up.

After showering, Jiang Youwan had already gone downstairs to eat. It was around seven or eight in the evening now. Jiang Jinyi felt it was all her fault for making Youwan eat so late.

Jiang Jinyi blamed herself and sat down across from her. Jiang Youwan didn’t look up at her, eating quietly with her head down.

Jiang Youwan was wearing a very sensual spaghetti-strap nightgown. Because the weather was cold from the rain, she had draped a thin shawl over her shoulders. She had removed her makeup, her long hair loosely pinned up, but it didn’t detract from her beauty at all—she was still as beautiful as a divine enchantress, dignified and seductive.

Jiang Youwan was always cold to outsiders, wearing a “do not approach” expression wherever she went, and would only put on a professional fake smile when circumstances required it. She was only ever especially gentle with Jiang Jinyi—gently calling her Xiao Jin, gently referring to herself as her sister.

She definitely wouldn’t be like this at mealtimes—ignoring her, eating on her own, not even looking up.

She used to think Jiang Youwan’s kindness to her was a given. But now that she knew Jiang Youwan wasn’t her biological sister, she suddenly felt her heart tighten with panic and unease.

If Jiang Youwan got truly angry one day and stopped wanting her, what would she do? She wouldn’t be able to say with full confidence: I’m your jiejie, it’s right that you indulge me, I’m your jiejie, you can’t not want me.

Thinking of this, Jiang Jinyi suddenly felt her eyes stinging. She lowered her head further, looking especially forlorn and pitiful. She saw the shrimp on the table and remembered that Jiang Youwan used to peel shrimp and feed her.

She took a small saucer and placed it in front of her, then started peeling shrimp.

This was arguably her first time peeling shrimp. She was clumsy and awkward at it. What others could do in about ten seconds took her nearly half a minute to peel out one shrimp. She placed the meat in the small saucer, accumulating a dozen or so. When she finally looked up, she found Jiang Youwan watching her.

The gaze was flat, without much emotional fluctuation. Jiang Jinyi looked at her hopefully and placed that small saucer of shrimp meat in front of her.

“…For Jiejie to eat.” She knew Jiang Youwan liked being called Jiejie, so she said it especially sweetly, especially obediently.

Jiang Youwan didn’t move. She continued eating on her own.

Jiang Jinyi was a little disappointed. Her eyes dimmed, but she didn’t give up. She also took a king crab, helped extract the meat, and placed it all in front of Youwan to eat. And every kind of shell-food on the table, she peeled for her. After busying herself for over twenty minutes, she hadn’t taken a single bite of rice herself.

She gazed at Jiang Youwan expectantly, like a child seeking credit.

“Jiejie, if you don’t eat soon, it’ll get cold.”

    Oh no.

    Jiang Youwan sighed inwardly.

Looking at Jiang Jinyi’s expectant, somewhat pitiful eyes, and the food peeled and prepared in front of her, Jiang Youwan could no longer cold-shoulder her. She’d truly lost to her.

It was as if, if she didn’t eat soon, it wouldn’t be the food that got cold—it would be her heart that died.

How could she not know? Jiang Jinyi had been spoiled since childhood, never having to do anything like peeling shrimp or shells with her own hands.

To coax her, though, she’d peeled several full plates.

Jiang Youwan looked at that small saucer of shrimp meat. Her gaze rippled slightly, though her expression didn’t change much. She used her chopsticks to pick up one piece and placed it in her mouth, chewing slowly.

Seeing her willing to eat, Jiang Jinyi immediately beamed, brightening all over. Jiang Youwan sighed helplessly. Though she sighed, the corners of her mouth curved into a smile, and she fed a piece of shrimp meat to Jiang Jinyi’s mouth.

Jiang Jinyi obediently ate it. Watching her so well-behaved, Jiang Youwan really couldn’t stand it. A strange, wicked impulse stirred deep within her.

In the end, those impulses were only released in a low murmur: “Little bastard.”

Having been scolded, Jiang Jinyi didn’t get angry, and just smiled foolishly at her. Jiang Youwan had once again become the gentle Jiejie who belonged only to her, and that sense of security had returned.

“Next time, if you just randomly find someone and say you want them to be your girlfriend, I’ll really get angry and stop talking to you.” Jiang Youwan thought of many stern warnings in her head, but the harshest she could come up with was this one.

Jiang Jinyi immediately promised: “I definitely won’t next time. I’ll be super good.”

Jiang Youwan thought: If only you really were super good.

After dinner, Jiang Youwan went to the study to work. Jiang Jinyi played with the cat in her room. Around eleven o’clock, Jiang Youwan closed her computer, returned to her room, and stood in front of the desk. She opened a drawer. What greeted her eyes was a suppressant.

This suppressant was one she had prepared recently—her heat was coming.

If nothing unexpected happened, it would be tonight.

She stared at it silently for a few seconds, picked up the suppressant, and placed it in the innermost hidden compartment. She opened another drawer and took out a bottle of perfume.

    Catnip perfume.

The door to her room was left slightly ajar. Hearing movement from the next room, she pressed the perfume lightly and sprayed twice.

The author has something to say:

Jiejie: The little cat’s here, didn’t Xiao Jin also follow along?
