    Not Unaccustomed

After saying this, Jiang Youwan immediately felt the person in her arms go soft, no longer struggling.

    She froze.

Jiang Youwan couldn’t see her expression, didn’t know what her reaction was, didn’t know what she was thinking.

She just hoped she could sleep a little more comfortably.

    Jiang Jinyi was still hesitating.

Because they were sisters, very close, she and Jiang Youwan often had many intimate gestures—hugging, holding hands, leaning against her, things like that—but they had never slept in the same bed before, let alone squeezed together on a sofa.

She had been sleeping alone since she was four; she hadn’t shared a bed with anyone else since.

Other than sleeping with Mom, wouldn’t sleeping with anyone else feel really unfamiliar?

“What are you whimpering about?” Jiang Youwan pressed close to her cheek, felt her face gradually heating up, and gave a soft laugh. “Shy? What’s there to be shy about sleeping with jiejie? This is normal between sisters. Xiao Jin is just getting a deeper experience of what it feels like to have a jiejie, that’s all.”

A deeper experience of what it feels like to have a sister.

Right—other people with older sisters were all like this. Jiang Jinyi often heard her classmates say they shared a bed with their sisters, chatting until midnight.

Right, there was nothing to be shy about when sisters slept together.

Nothing to be shy about at all.

Jiang Jinyi convinced herself and muttered stubbornly, “I’m not shy, I’m just not used to it.”

“Ah, not used to it? Do you know what the countryside has at night? Snakes, mice, and bugs. Compared to those, which ‘not used to it’ is Xiao Jin willing to try?” Jiang Youwan laid out the stark contrast for her to choose from.

Snakes, mice, and bugs… Jiang Jinyi was spooked. She turned away, eyes downcast. “Th-then fine…”

“Just one night. Tomorrow morning I’m leaving—I’d rather die than stay in a place like this again.”

Her reluctant expression was adorable too. Jiang Youwan gave a soft laugh, overflowing with doting fondness. “Alright~”

Tomorrow’s problems could wait until tomorrow. Right now, the most important thing was to calm her down.

Jiang Youwan spread the blanket she had brought over the sofa and had Jiang Jinyi sit on it for a moment. She said, “Jiejie is going to take a quick shower first. Wait a moment, okay?”

Jiang Jinyi nodded and told her to hurry.

After Jiang Youwan went to shower, she just sat stiffly on the sofa, not even playing with her phone, feeling inexplicably nervous, not knowing where to put her hands and feet, not knowing what she should do.

Sharing a bed with someone other than Mom for the first time—it was inevitable to be nervous.

About ten-odd minutes later, the sound of water in the bathroom stopped. Jiang Jinyi quickly picked up her phone and scrolled randomly, pretending she was just playing with it, not looking at all like someone nervous about sleeping together soon.

Two more minutes passed, and Jiang Youwan came out.

Hearing the bathroom door open, Jiang Jinyi finally lifted her gaze with feigned nonchalance and cooed, “So sleepy…”

She was genuinely nervous, but genuinely sleepy too.

“Xiao Jin had a hard day.” Jiang Youwan turned off the lights, leaving only the desk lamp on. She sat at the other end of the sofa, lounging lazily against a throw pillow, her feet just touching Jiang Jinyi’s legs. She curled her fingers at Jiang Jinyi in a beckoning gesture. “Come here.”

    Time to sleep?

Jiang Jinyi’s heart beat faster than before, but her expression remained composed as she climbed over her long legs to position herself in front of her.

Jiang Jinyi’s hands braced on either side of her waist as she looked down at her. Their eyes met, and Jiang Youwan’s brows and eyes curved into a gentle smile. Jiang Jinyi’s cheeks flushed crimson under her gaze, and she quickly surrendered, averting her eyes in flustered panic.

“Alright.” Seeing her get shy again, Jiang Youwan raised an arm to wrap around her back, pulling her into her embrace. One hand pressed against her head, guiding it down onto softness so she could sleep comfortably.

So this was how they’d sleep—held like this.

The moment Jiang Jinyi’s head rested there, she could feel her softness even through the sleepwear. A nameless sense of shame welled up; she instinctively tried to rise, but Jiang Youwan held her down firmly. “Be good, don’t fidget, time to sleep.”

    “Mm…”

Seeing her body tense, Jiang Youwan coaxed, “You have to relax a little to fall asleep. Be good, relax.”

Jiang Jinyi followed her words and slowly relaxed her body, nuzzling her face until she found a comfortable position.

    “Comfortable to lie on?”

Jiang Jinyi wrapped her arms around her waist, clutching her sleepwear, and whispered, “Comfortable…”

Jiang Youwan’s body was truly incredibly soft. Lying on top was very comfortable, and resting her head on it was comfortable too.

It seemed… it seemed even more comfortable than sleeping in a bed.

Jiang Youwan said nothing more, and the room fell into silence.

Like this, Jiang Youwan leaned against the throw pillow while Jiang Jinyi lay in her arms—the scene was exceptionally warm and tender.

Jiang Jinyi lifted her face to steal a glance at her, only to meet those eyes brimming with amusement. Startled, she buried her thoroughly flushed face into the valley of her chest, hiding it from view.

Jiang Youwan didn’t laugh at her again. Instead, she tilted her head a little, letting her nose emerge from the softness. “You need to breathe.”

“Mm…” It seemed she wasn’t yet used to being held by jiejie—being embraced made her feel this awkward.

This wasn’t the first time Jiang Youwan had coaxed Jiang Jinyi to sleep. There had been many times during these days—during thunderstorms, on the car ride to school, when she threw tantrums and couldn’t sleep—Jiang Youwan always had to coax her before she could fall asleep.

So Jiang Youwan had extensive experience coaxing her to sleep. A rub of the head, a gentle squeeze of the earlobes, a few soft murmurs, and Jiang Jinyi was already enveloped by drowsiness, drifting off.

Jiang Youwan couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. It seemed Xiao Jin truly trusted her now, sleeping this deeply.

This feeling of being trusted was far more enjoyable to Jiang Youwan than sleep itself.

Suddenly, a knock sounded at the door, shattering the warm atmosphere. Jiang Youwan frowned and covered both of Jiang Jinyi’s ears with her hands. Then, Huo Qi’s voice came from outside: “Jiang Eldest Miss, it’s me!”

After the person finished speaking, Jiang Youwan released Jiang Jinyi, carefully laid her flat on the sofa, and got up to answer the door.

The door opened, and Huo Qi’s smile froze on her face.

Jiang Youwan looked at her and lowered her voice. “May I ask what this is about?”

Huo Qi didn’t immediately answer Jiang Youwan’s question. Instead, she looked into the room and saw Jiang Jinyi lying on the sofa, apparently fast asleep.

Huo Qi frowned. How was that possible?

She had grown up with Jiang Jinyi and was the person who understood her best. Jiang Jinyi had princess syndrome—how could she possibly be willing to sleep in a place like this?

Just minutes ago, she had been imagining that Jiang Jinyi must be throwing a tantrum, demanding to leave, wanting to go home right away—she couldn’t possibly endure a place like this.

Huo Qi had been thinking she’d come down and get Jiang Jinyi to leave with her—she was one hundred percent certain she would go. She never imagined that Jiang Jinyi had actually fallen asleep.

On a wooden sofa, no less.

“May I ask what this is about?” Jiang Youwan repeated.

Huo Qi shifted her gaze to Jiang Youwan, her pupils dark and deep. What had this woman done to Jiang Jinyi?

She put on an air of detachment. “Nothing. I just had something to tell her. Since she’s asleep, it can wait until tomorrow.”

“Alright.” Jiang Youwan was about to close the door when she suddenly heard:

“Jiang Youwan… come hold me quickly…”

That voice was soft and sweet, a little husky and slurred, but the words were still discernible. Jiang Youwan looked back and saw Jiang Jinyi propping herself up on the sofa, brows furrowed, wearing the displeased expression of someone not yet fully awake—like a kitten whose eyes hadn’t yet opened, searching for its mother cat.

    Complete, wholehearted dependence.

When Jiang Youwan saw this, when she heard those words asking her to come hold her—her heart melted. She didn’t even have time to see Huo Qi’s reaction. She shut the door and quickly walked to the sofa, pulling the girl back into her arms.

“Okay, jiejie is holding you now.”

Jiang Jinyi gave a little murmur, nuzzled her head, and fell back asleep, satisfied.

Huo Qi was left standing alone at the door, her eyes dark, her fists clenched, not leaving for a long time.

Seven o’clock the next morning, Jiang Jinyi woke from her dreams. The first thing she saw upon opening her eyes was a swath of darkness; when she propped herself up slightly, that darkness became flawlessly white skin. Jiang Youwan’s sleepwear collar was rumpled from being rubbed against and gaped open. Jiang Jinyi blinked, her expression turning a little awkward, and she helped adjust the collar for her before getting up from the sofa.

Her body didn’t ache at all—Jiang Youwan had held her as she slept the entire night.

So this was what it felt like to have a sister?

Just as Jiang Jinyi was thinking this, Jiang Youwan also woke up. She gently reminded her to go wash up. At seven-thirty, the entire class gathered on the beach for a morning assembly. The teacher briefed them on today’s tasks, then dismissed them for free activity.

Breakfast wasn’t provided. Their first task was to explore the village, trade with the locals for food, and then wander around finding a spot they liked to settle down and paint.

“Xiao Jin, where do you want to go? I don’t know which spots have good scenery—can I follow you?”

“We haven’t been to the west beach yet. I want to go check it out.” Jiang Jinyi thought for a moment and said.

“Ah? Go there? But I heard there’s a crazy woman living on the west side of this village. She’s really unhinged—it sounds like her husband had an affair, and the mistress killed her son, and that’s what drove her mad. She lives alone in a broken-down house now. Whenever outsiders come, she comes out and stares at them fixedly, like she wants to swallow them alive. Just thinking about it is terrifying.”

Jiang Jinyi immediately stopped in her tracks. Jiang Youwan sensed her reluctance and asked gently, “Does Xiao Jin still want to go?”

Jiang Jinyi frowned and shook her head. Truth be told, she was a bit reluctant now.

A crazy woman or whatever—it sounded terrifying.

Just then, another classmate said dismissively, “It’s no big deal, it’s not as scary as you’re making it sound. I heard that woman is normal most of the time. I just saw Huo Qi’s WeChat Moments—she went there too, said it was really beautiful, and didn’t mention any crazy woman.”

Hearing that classmate say so, Jiang Jinyi’s expression eased considerably. If Huo Qi had gone there too and hadn’t complained, it probably wasn’t so bad.

She hesitated for a moment, but still wanted to go deep down. After all, there were no other good places to explore. “Let’s still go. The crazy woman probably hasn’t even gotten out of bed yet.”

The group headed west. When they reached the west beach, it was indeed beautiful—more beautiful than the other beaches. Jiang Jinyi felt she’d made the right choice, playing with crabs on the sand, collecting shells, taking photos.

Jiang Youwan didn’t join in. She just sat under the shade of a coconut tree, watching from afar as she played with two classmates.

It was getting close to noon, and the sun was growing fierce. Jiang Jinyi was only wearing a T-shirt, and since the morning assembly had been rushed, she hadn’t applied sunscreen. Not wanting to get tanned, she trotted over to the shade to find Jiang Youwan and ask to wear her shirt.

Jiang Youwan was wearing two layers—a T-shirt and a dark green shirt—because she’d recently had surgery and couldn’t be exposed to strong sunlight. She was also wearing sunglasses. She looked especially beautiful, more relaxed than usual.

Given that Jiang Youwan wasn’t going to play on the beach, Jiang Jinyi took both her shirt and her sunglasses. It wouldn’t affect her at all since she was staying in the shade.

Neither of them noticed that in the woods, there was a pair of extremely chilling eyes staring fixedly at them.

After about an hour of playing, the teacher organized a headcount and task assignment. The group walked back through the woods. Jiang Jinyi was still wearing Jiang Youwan’s shirt and sunglasses, walking and telling Jiang Youwan about a particularly hilarious crab she’d just encountered.

“That crab tried to burrow into a hole every time it saw me, but I kept blocking it, wrecking its burrowing. After several rounds of this, the crab had enough—it raised its claws and tried to pinch my toes, chasing me for quite a distance. Tell me, is it stupid or what? How could it possibly catch me? If it had just burrowed into a hole during the time I was running away, I wouldn’t have been able to find it!”

Jiang Youwan listened, thought for a moment, and smiled. “Mm, that’s a crab that holds grudges and is a bit slow.”

“If it wanted to take revenge on me, it should have hidden away, then taken me by surprise when I wasn’t looking—”

Jiang Jinyi was laughing happily, about to continue, when suddenly—a woman lunged out from the woods right in front of her. The woman had wild, disheveled hair, a pale face, clothes that were ragged and worn, and a pair of bloodshot eyes staring fixedly at her, full of hatred—as if she wanted to tear her to pieces!

No one had time to react. The woman hurled herself at Jiang Jinyi, tackling her to the ground. Jiang Jinyi struggled, but the woman unhesitatingly drove the knife she held fiercely into Jiang Jinyi’s body.

In a voice hoarse beyond belief, she kept muttering, “It’s all you, give me back my son, give me back my son!”
