On the Wedding Night, I Transmigrated to After the Divorce – Chapter 83

The Confrontation
Yu Yan lay on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling, consumed by panic and at a complete loss.
She was finished, she thought.
She was truly, completely finished.
She had been far too careless. Coming back with Fu Yunqing was nothing less than a sheep trotting right behind a tiger, straight into its den.
She never would’ve guessed, not in a million years, that Fu Yunqing could be this terrifying—already hiding her identity documents, already preparing to keep her in captivity.
What should she do? What could she do now? How was she supposed to escape? Could she even escape at all?
This was a modern society ruled by law. No matter how wealthy Fu Yunqing was, she couldn’t simply block out the sky with a single hand. If Yu Yan laid all her cards on the table, would Fu Yunqing actually let her leave?
Yu Yan’s mind raced, but the phone beside her buzzed relentlessly, cutting off her train of thought. She rolled over abruptly and picked it up. Fu Yunqing had sent her several messages in a row.
Jiejie Mommy Darling: 【My winter break starts on the thirteenth. The flight is booked for the afternoon of the fourteenth, is that alright?】
Jiejie Mommy Darling: 【It’s already the dead of winter, and the snow in Hokkaido is exceptionally thick. It’s beautiful and romantic. I know you’ll love it—you always adored this kind of atmosphere in the past.】
Jiejie Mommy Darling: 【Shall we pack our bags together tomorrow? We can see what we need to bring, or would you prefer if I packed for you?】
Jiejie Mommy Darling: 【Please don’t be angry anymore.】
Jiejie Mommy Darling: 【Honey misses you. She keeps crying at the door, wanting to go out and find you.】
Jiejie Mommy Darling: 【Image】
A flight on the fourteenth… Yu Yan scrolled down and checked the time. In a few hours, it would be the tenth. She had only four days left…
If she didn’t leave within four days, she’d be swept away to a foreign land, left to face even greater unknowns.
What’s more, seeing that she hadn’t replied for so long, Fu Yunqing was actually using the cat to try and soften her heart…
What a cunning woman.
Yu Yan tapped on the photo. The handsome little black cat stood before the tightly closed bedroom door, turning her head to look back at the camera. One look at her expression made it obvious she wanted Fu Yunqing to open the door for her.
Ah…
What was she to do? She still had Honey. What would happen to Honey if she left? Yu Yan hated the thought of parting with her; she desperately wanted to smuggle the cat away too.
But right now, whether she could even get away herself was still a massive question.
Yu Yan had absolutely no desire to reply to her. She sent a message to Lu Yu instead: 【Fu Yunqing hid all my documents. I can’t find them anywhere.】
Lu Yu replied calmly: 【You can get them reissued.】
Oh, that was true. She could get them reissued. But it was such a hassle—her ID card, passport, driver’s license, bank cards… How many trips would she have to make to sort out a pile like that? Yu Yan had very little experience handling such affairs on her own, and just thinking about it gave her a massive headache.
Fu Yunqing was so detestable. She absolutely hated her.
Tossed and turned in frustration, unable to find a way out, Yu Yan felt her phone buzz again. Thinking it was another message from Fu Yunqing, she had no desire to look at it. She closed her eyes and fumed for a moment before changing her mind. She actually wanted to see what kind of act the woman was putting on now. She lit up the screen—the sender was saved as 【Cousin】.
Cousin: 【Yanyan, it’s my birthday party tomorrow night. Do you have time to come over and celebrate?】
Her cousin’s birthday…
Yu Yan bolted upright in an instant. Her life had been such a chaotic mess lately that she had completely forgotten about this.
Her cousin was three years older than her, and as a fellow Capricorn, their birthdays were only nine days apart. January tenth—which was just two hours away!
Last year (which was actually four years ago), when her cousin turned twenty-three, Yu Yan had only sent her well-wishes and a gift. But when Yu Yan turned twenty, her cousin had traveled all the way from the imperial capital back to Yuncheng just to give her a massive surprise. At the time, Yu Yan had been deeply moved and incredibly guilty, silently vowing that when her cousin’s birthday came around the following year, she would return the favor with a spectacular surprise of her own.
Yet she had actually forgotten. And now that the day was here, she had prepared nothing.
Overwhelmed by guilt and sheepishness, Yu Yan thought only of quickly replying to salvage the situation: 【Yes!】
Yu Yan: 【I’ll be there!】
Li Tong sent over an address: 【Looking forward to seeing you】【Smile jpg.】
OK.
Her cousin’s birthday made Yu Yan completely stop agonizing over her dilemma. She made up her mind: she’d leave tomorrow. She’d go celebrate her cousin’s birthday, and as soon as it was over, she’d make her escape.
So what if Fu Yunqing had hidden her documents? At worst, it would just be a little troublesome. In a modern society ruled by law, you could never force someone to stay if they were truly determined to leave.
When she opened her eyes the next morning, Yu Yan lay in bed for half an hour before finally getting up to wash her face and brush her teeth.
It was already ten o’clock. She checked and found that her bedroom door was still locked from the inside, exactly as it had been last night. It seemed Fu Yunqing hadn’t tried to enter. Good.
Ignoring the barrage of new messages from Fu Yunqing, she took her time getting ready. She styled a nice outfit from her walk-in closet but decided she was too lazy to apply makeup. Even though she was attending a party, her cousin had always said she preferred her look bare-faced anyway. It wouldn’t matter.
With that, everything was set. She planned to eat breakfast at Fu Yunqing’s place one last time. But the moment she opened her door, she found a little black fuzzball curled up waiting outside. Seeing her emerge, the cat immediately stood up and began to let out a series of meows.
“…”
Yu Yan could hardly bear it. How long had her baby Honey been waiting here?
Her heart ached terribly for her.
“Baby, good baby, Jiejie will miss you in the future, too… Jiejie can’t give you a luxurious life right now, so you’ll have to stay with that bad woman for the time being. Once Jiejie strikes it rich, I’ll definitely find a way to take you with me…” Gathering Honey into her arms, she walked downstairs, pouring out her grievances to the cat the entire way.
Fu Yunqing was working on her laptop on the living room sofa. Hearing the noise, she looked back. Seeing Yu Yan fully dressed and walking downstairs, she set her computer aside and stood up. “Are you going out today?”
At the sight of her, the guilt and affection Yu Yan had just shown the cat vanished instantly, her expression turning sour. Putting the kitten down, she headed toward the kitchen to look for food. “Yes.”
“I made some jam toast for you.” Breakfast was already set out on the dining table, and Yu Yan sat down to enjoy it without the slightest hesitation. Fu Yunqing sat down beside her, watching her for a moment. Although Yu Yan still refused to look at her, she was eating with a healthy appetite.
It was enough that she was willing to eat, and eat well.
A warm sense of relief and tenderness welled up in Fu Yunqing’s chest, her lips curving into a soft smile. Noticing a dab of blueberry jam on the corner of the girl’s mouth, she reached out to wipe it away, but Yu Yan tilted her head aside and licked it off herself.
Fu Yunqing lowered her gaze, withdrawing her hand without a word. “Where are you going to have fun today?”
“Do you need me to drive you?”
“No,” Yu Yan said.
“Alright. I’ll have Dan Lin drive you, then. She can leave as soon as she drops you off, so she won’t get in your way.” Fu Yunqing asked in a casually offhand tone, “Who are you hanging out with?”
Yu Yan turned a deaf ear, continuing to stuff food into her mouth.
Fu Yunqing murmured, “Hmm?”
Yu Yan felt a surge of irritation.
The woman still loved putting on this hypocritical act, playing the gentle, considerate, and understanding partner. She acted as though she were giving Yu Yan plenty of space, fostering a false illusion of freedom, when in reality she was still a paranoid, obsessive control freak who insisted on prying into her every destination.
“Why do you have to ask about everything?” Yu Yan made no effort to hide her impatience.
Fu Yunqing’s brow furrowed slightly, and she looked at her with earnest eyes. “Yanyan, can you really not tell me where you’re going? If something happens to you out there, where am I supposed to look for you?”
Such a request was hardly demanding. It was only natural in an intimate relationship, was it not?
“What could possibly happen to me?”
Fu Yunqing’s gaze turned solemn.
She could feel that Yu Yan’s resentment toward her was even deeper than it had been last night.
Since things had already reached this point, Yu Yan saw no need to hide it any longer. She simply came out with it: “I’m going to celebrate my cousin’s birthday.”
Fu Yunqing instantly honed in on a single name: “Li Tong?”
Fu Yunqing was clearly displeased by the name, but Yu Yan remained entirely indifferent. “Yeah.”
Fu Yunqing pursed her lips, her dark eyes locking onto the girl. The atmosphere grew tense and rigid. After a long silence, she asked, “Can you not go?”
Not go?
Why on earth wouldn’t she go? Fu Yunqing’s demand instantly brought out Yu Yan’s rebellious streak. She shot back, “Why shouldn’t I go?”
“I’m going to celebrate my own cousin’s birthday. Is there a problem with that?”
When no answer came, though she could still feel the heavy, unwavering intensity of the woman’s gaze, Yu Yan found herself unable to stand the suffocating atmosphere any longer. Wanting only to leave, she set down her cutlery with a cold snort. “And you still claim I’m not your pet? Now I’m not even allowed to go to a birthday party? You have to interfere with even this?”
“It’s not that you’re not allowed,” Fu Yunqing said, her voice muffled with suppressed emotion. “It’s just that Li Tong isn’t appropriate.”
“Why isn’t she appropriate? She’s my cousin. We’ve always celebrated each other’s birthdays. Why does that suddenly not work for you?” Having thoroughly vented her frustrations, Yu Yan stood up to leave. “And there’s no need for your stupid driver to take me. I can hail a cab myself.”
“…”
Fu Yunqing took a deep breath, calling after her: “Yu Yan!”
Yu Yan’s heart jolted, and she froze on instinct, her pulse instantly skipping a beat.
Annoyed that she had actually been intimidated by the shout, she turned back defiantly. “What?”
“Are you upset just because I won’t do what you say? Can you please stop being so unhealthily possessive? It’s suffocating, do you know that?”
Suffocating?
She was already suffocated by her, was she?
Fu Yunqing stared at her, her expression turning dark and somber. “I wouldn’t care whose birthday you went to, and I wouldn’t stop you.”
“But what exactly is the relationship between you and Li Tong? Is she truly just your cousin?”
“Why wouldn’t she be? She’s literally the daughter of my mother’s cousin’s aunt’s daughter’s daughter!”
“Do you really think of her as just a cousin?” Fu Yunqing had never wanted to bring these things up, and speaking of them now brought her immense pain. “Do cousins confess their feelings to each other? Do they almost end up together?”
So she really did know everything. Yu Yan saw no point in hiding it. “Just because we once liked each other, we can’t go back to being sisters?”
Once liked each other…
Yu Yan had never admitted to those words so openly before.
In the past, whenever the subject came up, she would act cute or play the victim. She would sweet-talk Fu Yunqing, promising that she would only ever love her Fu-jiejie, that her Fu-jiejie would always be her favorite, all to make the older woman feel better.
Yet at this very moment, those naked words had slipped past her lips without the slightest attempt to soften them. They landed like a heavy boulder on Fu Yunqing’s chest, leaving her suffocated and bitter.
She had loved her once, and now she was going to find her, even if it meant wounding Fu Yunqing to do so.
Fu Yunqing lost a fraction of her control. “You liked her once… what about now? Do you still love her?”
“We’re together right now. I’m your partner. Can you please show some consideration for my feelings?”
“Does going to her birthday party have to mean anything?” Yu Yan said. “There’ll be so many people at her party—it won’t be just the two of us. She celebrates my birthday with me every single year. How do you expect me to reject her invitation?”
Fu Yunqing’s brow furrowed deeply as she stared at her, utterly suffocated. Yu Yan finally lost her patience entirely. “Even if I don’t go, won’t you just keep overthinking things forever anyway?”
Yu Yan stepped closer, tilting her head up to meet her gaze. “Fu Yunqing, were you planning to lie to me for the rest of your life?”
“Do you truly think I’m being so unreasonable that I’d throw such a massive tantrum just because you had Dan Lin follow me around?”
Yu Yan glared at her with reckless fury. Fu Yunqing suddenly realized what was coming next. Her face went pale, as though she had been struck by lightning.
“You lied to me and said the school required you to teach online courses, but they never did! You applied to teach those classes online yourself, didn’t you? It was all so you could stay home and keep watch over me. Why did you have to keep watch over me? Haven’t I listened to you? Haven’t I done exactly what you wanted? You didn’t want me to go act, so I didn’t. You wanted me to turn down An Qiu, so I turned her down. You told me to stop contacting her, so I never messaged her again. But what about you? It wasn’t enough for you to monitor me at home all day; you even sneaked a look at my phone every night while I was asleep! Is that normal?!”
“And that’s not all. You lied to me, Fu Yunqing! You’ve been lying to me from the very beginning!”
“You lied and told me my amnesia would be incredibly difficult to recover from, and you terrified me by saying I’d have to go through a bunch of scary treatments. Was that really the truth? Is that actually what the doctor told you? You’ve been deliberately steering me to give up on retrieving my memories, haven’t you? You don’t want me to remember, do you?!”
“What are you trying to hide from me? What is it that you don’t want me to remember?”
“Surveillance, spying, deception… and now you’ve even hidden all of my identity documents! What on earth are you trying to do?”
“Fu Yunqing, I find you absolutely terrifying right now. I don’t even dare to stay by your side anymore, do you understand? Are these the actions of a sane person?!”
The author has something to say:
But love has already become a double-edged sword~
