She Can Settle Down Enough to Love Someone
1.
Yu Yan’s Moments post received many likes, including one from that cousin who never missed a single one of her posts.
But Cousin didn’t leave a comment.
Yu Yan opened her chat window many times, feeling she ought to say something, yet not knowing what to say, not daring to say anything, keeping on avoiding it.
Perhaps they should simply do as before — after she and Fu Yunqing had married and fallen mutually in love, a tacit understanding had slowly faded the closeness between them. Cousin had always been a forbearing, gentle person.
She wouldn’t blame her, and she wouldn’t pressure her.
Yu Yan couldn’t give her any response on the emotional front, but facing someone like that, Yu Yan truly felt guilty.
She knew that the version of herself before falling in love with Fu Yunqing had been utterly lawless — stringing people along, flirting with women, playing with feelings, truly terrible.
【Cousin, Happy New Year】 Yu Yan spent quite a long time composing this short message, then hesitated a long while before sending it.
Li Tong replied quickly: 【Happy New Year】
She was always like this — responding to everything Yu Yan did. Perhaps seeing the blinking “typing…” indicator at the top, for a reason never spoken aloud but understood by both, Cousin didn’t want to make things too awkward for her and took the initiative to ask: 【Are you in Yuncheng right now?】
Yu Yan hurriedly deleted the pile of words she’d drafted and replied: 【Yeah】
Li Tong: 【Have you gotten in touch with Maternal Aunt?】
Yu Yan: 【I have. She called me a few days ago】
Li Tong: 【That’s good. I knew she’d never abandon you】
Right — Cousin was correct.
During that helpless period, Cousin had given her plenty of encouragement and comfort.
Yu Yan finally said: 【If I told you I lost my memory recently and my mind was stuck at age twenty, would you believe me?】
Li Tong: 【I believe you】
After a pause, another message arrived: 【So that’s why. No wonder】
No wonder that when she’d been with her lately, there’d been a sense of familiarity, as if the estrangement between them had dissolved, as though they’d returned to three years ago, when Yanyan had been completely uninhibited around her.
So she’d lost her memory.
Now that her memory had returned, the estrangement and the rift had reappeared between them — so much so that even sending a single message required careful deliberation.
Yu Yan had never belonged to her. Li Tong had known this fact early on — Yu Yan belonged only to herself. The world was her playground; because of her innate beauty, she was the infatuation and aspiration of many, while many people to her were just another ride at the amusement park. When novelty struck, she’d lean in with enthusiasm — no burden, no scruples, pulling every little scheme to get her way, radiating her self-aware charm to succeed. She belonged to no one, and no one could keep her.
Li Tong couldn’t, and neither could anyone else. Those who came on too eagerly would only scare her off, so Li Tong always stood calmly in place and waited, knowing that this way, when she tired of playing, she’d occasionally think of her.
She had maintained that balanced mindset, never imagining that somewhere beyond her sight, Yu Yan was willingly becoming someone’s exclusive.
She posted her photos on her Moments, posted words of praise and longing for her. They traveled together, they raised a cat together. Yu Yan used that cat as her profile picture, used a photo of their silhouettes from behind as her wallpaper. Her social media was covered in traces of that person everywhere.
She hadn’t contacted her in a very, very long time.
Li Tong felt a powerful surge of frustration and regret, tossing and turning through sleepless nights, yet utterly powerless.
Yu Yan could actually settle down enough to love someone. That person would never be her — not the first time, not the second time, and next time, she wouldn’t have a chance either.
Li Tong couldn’t help but laugh.
She swallowed the emotions churning in her chest and told Yu Yan: 【So it’s fine. Don’t carry any guilt about it. You never promised me anything. You just lost your memory and felt helpless, so you leaned on me a little. As your cousin, that’s perfectly normal, isn’t it?】
Li Tong: 【Of course, now you have your own person to rely on, and you won’t lean on me anymore. I know.】
Li Tong: 【I’m not that fragile. You don’t need to worry about breaking my heart.】
2.
Yu Yan did exactly as she’d said — she changed her phone’s passcode to Fu Yunqing’s birthday.
Fu Yunqing conducted periodic inspections. It wasn’t about mistrust — it was a ritual, a form that kept the Puppy’s heart filled with reverence, that let her constantly and deeply feel that everything about her belonged to her Master.
Naturally, she saw the messages Yu Yan had sent to Li Tong. Yu Yan had been mentally prepared for this and had even been anxious about it for two days. Now she knelt at her feet, holding her Master’s ankle, head bowed, keeping quiet out of guilt.
Fu Yunqing had laid thick carpets in many of the places they frequented at home, using the finest, softest materials — as comfortable as a mattress. Even after two or three hours of kneeling punishment, her knees wouldn’t bear a mark. Yu Yan had been punished with kneeling plenty of times. Of course, most of the time she couldn’t last that long — she’d start whining and acting cute before even half an hour had passed. Sometimes, when left alone, she’d simply lie down flat, only scrambling back into a kneeling position when she heard footsteps.
That day, her reply to Li Tong had been: 【Cousin will definitely meet the right person】
Li Tong: 【I’ll take your good word for it】
The wait for judgment felt endlessly long. Yu Yan nervously fiddled with the fabric of Fu Yunqing’s skirt hem near her feet. After quite a while, Fu Yunqing finally set the phone down.
The one who’d been sneaking glances immediately raised her head, lips pressed together, almost pouting, looking up at her with pitiful, pleading eyes.
A Mommy could see right through her child’s thoughts — she must know how scared she was.
Seeing her so nervous, Fu Yunqing laughed in spite of herself. “You handled it perfectly well. What are you afraid of?”
Yu Yan let out a breath of relief.
She felt a bit smug — as long as she was honest enough, she could handle even the worst situations.
“But there won’t be a next time.”
She leaned down and stroked the top of Yu Yan’s head, at once rewarding her for being good and fixing her with a gaze that was gentle and guiding yet, far more than any forceful command, impossible to refuse. “Yanyan, I’m still a little bothered by it. You can’t reach out to her on your own initiative anymore, understand?”
3.
With the only recent worry now resolved, Yu Yan’s mood was all sunny skies. She and Fu Yunqing were watching a movie in the home theater, two bodies tangled together on the large, soft sofa. Both were dressed in light, cool clothes. The heating was on, and a thin blanket was draped over them.
Fu Yunqing always watched movies with complete focus. Yu Yan didn’t have the patience for those artsy films that felt like relics, but she wasn’t bored at all, nor did she want to leave to find some other amusement — she only found her fun from Fu-jiejie.
She shifted and squirmed in her arms. The blanket slid off, and Fu Yunqing caught it, pulling it back over her. Yu Yan was wearing only a slip dress. She lay on her side against Fu Yunqing, who cupped her bottom with one hand, tucked the blanket over her legs as well, and drew the whole bundle into her embrace.
Many of their friends who kept dogs, when asked what their dogs did during movie nights, said they mostly just lay quietly beside them as companions. Yu Yan, though, was like a cat who’d sniffed catnip — wriggling and burrowing all over Fu Yunqing, nuzzling into the crook of her neck, nuzzling under her chin, making it impossible for her to watch the plot undistracted. Fu Yunqing gave her little pats. When she got a light smack, she paused — not angry, not aggrieved, but instead narrowed her eyes into a blissful smile, gripped Fu Yunqing’s wrist, and stuck out her tongue, licking her palm with abandoned devotion. She got smacked several times and never tired of it.
