    Such a Bitter Fate

Fu Yunqing is sick of her

After being dropped off downstairs by Li Tong, Yu Yan said a sweet goodbye and hurried inside to wash up. Stripped of all energy to deal with anything else, she collapsed into bed and immediately fell asleep. Before drifting off, her mind was in a hazy blur, thinking only of resting up so she could go and curry favor with her Fu-jiejie the next day.

However, a two-hour IV drip wasn’t enough to completely rid her of the virus. When she woke up the next day, her fever was still flaring up on and off. She really didn’t want to go back to the hospital for more injections, so every time her temperature spiked, she resorted to physical cooling methods—it was grueling. Looking in the mirror with a fever cooling patch stuck to her forehead, she felt immensely pitiful. Her desire to video call Fu Yunqing was stronger than ever—but it seemed Fu Yunqing had evaporated from the human world. Suddenly, she had completely stopped replying to messages.

    Yu Yan: 【Morning, Teacher ^^】

Yu Yan: 【Teacher, my fever broke】

Yu Yan: 【Oh, it looks like it’s already noon. I just woke up. Have you had lunch, Teacher?】

Yu Yan: 【I’m doomed, the fever is back】

Yu Yan: 【My life is so bitter jpg.】

Yu Yan: 【Teacher, Boss Fu, jiejie?】

Yu Yan: 【Pay some attention to me】

    Yu Yan: 【I still have a low-grade fever, it’s so uncomfortable…】

Yu Yan: 【I hate being sick so much. I’ve decided never to let myself get a fever again】

Yu Yan: 【Teacher, I miss you so much】

Yu Yan: 【If only you were by my side】

Yu Yan: 【I really want you to hug me again】

    It was absolutely maddening.

Whether Yu Yan was greeting her, complaining, whining, or saying incredibly flirtatious things, she replied to none of it. Yu Yan was extremely frustrated. Adopting a reckless attitude, she let her longing override her reason and directly dialed a video call. Unexpectedly, it was hung up after ringing for only three seconds.

Yu Yan had been harboring the hopeful illusion that Fu Yunqing had missed her messages because she was too busy. So she had actually been there the whole time, and was just deliberately ignoring her?

Did she not want to pay attention to her, or was she stringing her along?

    What did that mean?

In that case, Yu Yan decided to let it rot.

No, rather, she decided to hold her ground.

Last time, she had pestered Fu Yunqing into sending her teaching schedule for the next few days, so she knew she had a class tomorrow. Yu Yan thought with frustration that half her brain had already been melted by the fever; she didn’t have enough wisdom left to analyze the inner world of someone as incredibly complex and capricious as Fu Yunqing. Thus, she decided to focus on recovering first and strive to attend her class on time. When that moment came, it wouldn’t be as simple as just wanting a handhold or a hug. Yu Yan would have to think of a way to thoroughly win her over, lest she be subjected to cold violence every few days.

    What could she do?

How could she get Fu Yunqing to take her home?

Maybe she should just faint directly in front of her. That way, she would make Fu Yunqing panic and take her away, while also proving her determination—showing that even when she was this severely ill, she still insisted on attending her class just to see her.

The next day brought bright, clear skies. The temperature seemed to have warmed up a bit, and the sun shone through Yu Yan’s window, making her feel toasty even in her dreams. When she woke up naturally, the room was bathed in sunlight. Opening her eyes, her mood lifted right along with it. People really do need to bask in the sun, she thought. Though her body hadn’t been cured by the sunlight—every swallow felt like swallowing razor blades, accompanied by coughing and a low-grade fever—she couldn’t shake the heavy grogginess in her head.

The worse she felt, the harder it was to leave the warm blankets, but she only lingered in bed for a little while before getting up, still preoccupied with attending Fu Yunqing’s class that afternoon. Fu-jiejie had said the Tangerine Pear Tea was delicious, and now that winter was arriving, Yu Yan had specially bought a very thick thermos cup. She brewed the tea, let it cool to a drinkable temperature, and then poured it in; it wouldn’t go cold even after several hours.

She was going to go see exactly what was going on with Fu Yunqing ignoring her again.

Yu Yan bundled herself up tightly and put on a mask to prevent spreading the virus to anyone else through coughing.

When she arrived at the classroom, there were still five minutes until class started. Fu Yunqing wasn’t there yet. Yu Yan didn’t just place the thermos cup on the podium; she wanted to use the opportunity of delivering the water to say a few words to her.

Not long after, Fu Yunqing walked into the classroom carrying her bag. She was as beautiful as ever today, wearing an apricot-white woolen coat that looked like vibrant winter snow. With her black hair and bright eyes, her features were gentle yet deeply elegant. As a teacher, she naturally carried an aura of inviolable strictness. She wore tall boots, her steps steady and composed, each footfall seeming to step directly on Yu Yan’s heart.

Fu Yunqing was truly gorgeous… Compared to when Yu Yan first met her, her aura had grown a bit colder, but aloof beauties were just so mesmerizing…

Yu Yan simply stared at her like that, spending the entire class period brimming with anticipation.

The moment the dismissal bell rang, before anyone could approach Teacher Fu with academic questions, Yu Yan quickly grabbed her thermos cup, stood up, and briskly walked over to the side of the podium.

Fu Yunqing stood at the podium flipping through the materials in her hands. When Yu Yan arrived beside her, she seemed completely oblivious, her soft features carrying a trace of detached coldness. Her distant demeanor created a profound sense of alienation, instilling a sense of timidity in anyone approaching.

Even Yu Yan couldn’t help but become more cautious.

Gripping the thermos cup with both hands, Yu Yan called out to her, “Good afternoon, Teacher Fu.”

“This is Tangerine Pear Tea. The thermos cup is new, and I sterilized it with boiling water. The insulation is really good. The tea is still very warm right now; it tastes better than at room temperature.”

“If you drink it, your throat should feel a lot better~”

Yu Yan stared at her eagerly, having babbled that entire speech on her own, yet Fu Yunqing didn’t respond with a single word. She didn’t even spare her a glance, as if she hadn’t heard a thing. The smile gradually stiffened on Yu Yan’s face. She stood awkwardly in place, curling her fingertips, a little at a loss for what to do.

How could this be… Had she stepped on a landmine?

What was wrong with Fu Yunqing?

“Teacher Fu…” Trapped in an awkward stalemate and sinking into embarrassment, Yu Yan’s tone weakened as she called out again in a pleading voice. Fu Yunqing still kept her head lowered, not looking at her.

Suddenly, she spoke. “You don’t need to bring me these anymore.”

Her tone was faint and frigid, stripped of all emotion.

She wouldn’t accept it… she didn’t like it? But she had clearly liked it last time! Yu Yan felt a sudden surge of sorrow. “Why? Are you sick of it? Do you want to try a different flavor?”

“It’s useless,” she said, parting her lips.

She was as resolute and uncompromising as if she were rejecting a student who had a secret crush on her, leaving no room for illusions.

    “…”

She had said it was useful last time she drank it, so how was it useless now? Was the Tangerine Pear Tea too shabby? Or was what Yu Yan made actually terrible, and she had just lied to her last time because she was in a good mood? Yu Yan thought with frustration that constantly giving her tangerine and pear really lacked originality.

Yu Yan hesitated, wanting to speak but stopping herself. Suddenly, someone bumped into her. Two students had left their seats and were passing by the podium, seemingly messing around. One of them laughed too hard and accidentally tripped while stepping down the stairs. Stumbling forward, they crashed into Yu Yan, knocking the thermos cup right out of her hands and causing Yu Yan herself to stagger.

    “Ouch—”

Fu Yunqing finally raised her eyes.

“Watch where you’re walking, you’re so embarrassing! Sorry about that, sorry, get up, hurry up, let’s go…” Too ashamed to face anyone, the companion scolded their friend, rapidly fired off two apologies, grabbed their hand, and fled.

The thermos cup had taken a heavy hit and rolled under a student’s desk. Yu Yan stood frozen for a moment before briskly walking over to pick it up.

Fu Yunqing finally looked at her.

She was bundled up in a thick fleece jacket, her long hair tied back in a low bun, wearing no makeup. Above the mask, only her eyes and brows were visible, tinged with a rare, frail sickliness. Her skin was slightly flushed; she was still ill, still unrecovered.

Yu Yan picked up the thermos cup and hurriedly checked if it was leaking. It wasn’t, but the bottle had suffered a large dent and numerous scratches from the fall. She tried to rub them away with her hand, but the scratches wouldn’t budge. In an instant, the brand-new thermos cup looked terribly dirty.

It was dirty, imperfect, no longer pretty… This was supposed to be a gift for Fu-jiejie. How could she give it to her now that it was smashed like this?

Yu Yan instinctively looked toward Fu Yunqing, only to be stung with pain. She saw that her head was still lowered, her gaze cast downward, completely ignoring Yu Yan’s predicament. Yu Yan parted her lips, but in the next second, Fu Yunqing’s attention was drawn away by a flock of students gathering around her.

    “Teacher, I have a question about…”

Fu Yunqing remained gentle with her students, acting as a patient and accommodating teacher who answered their every need. Yu Yan stood all alone to the side, clutching the ruined thermos cup, utterly ignored by her.

She could feel many people around her staring. Following their gazes one by one, Yu Yan met a familiar pair of eyes—Xiao Jing was sitting in the second row, watching her with a mixture of surprise and scrutiny. Yu Yan had almost forgotten that she had a love rival. This was terrible. Having been seen like this, who knew how this scathing rival would mock her in her heart? Yu Yan suddenly felt deeply humiliated, turning around and retreating to the back row in a sorry state.

Yu Yan’s mood plummeted to rock bottom. She looked down at her battered and bruised water cup, her eyes full of heartache. The originally beautiful, milky white bottle was now covered in silver scratches. College students these days had no manners; they knocked over her cup and didn’t even help pick it up, just tossing out a casual apology before running away.

She looked up at the woman on the podium calmly answering questions. Thinking of how entirely unconcerned she had looked just moments ago, the grievances in her heart piled even higher.

What was she so angry about?

Did she not care about her at all?

Another class period quickly passed, and the dismissal bell rang. Yu Yan didn’t know what to do; the smashed thermos cup couldn’t be given away anymore, and besides, Fu Yunqing herself didn’t even want it.

The students scattered and left. Yu Yan also stood up, but just as she left her seat, before she even had time to walk down the tiered steps, Fu Yunqing had already packed up her things and was striding briskly out the door, not sparing Yu Yan so much as half a glance.

    Yu Yan froze.

She… walked so fast. Was she truly annoyed, deliberately trying to avoid her? Did she not even want to face her anymore?

Just moments ago, Yu Yan had still been fantasizing about whether she would feel heartache over her grievances.

“Excuse me, excuse me, coming through.” Uncertain whether she should chase after her, Yu Yan was bumped by someone from behind. She stepped aside to clear the path, and Fu Yunqing completely vanished from her sight.

She walked fast, and it was easy for her to shake Yu Yan off. Yu Yan was still sick, dizzy, and blurry-eyed; she couldn’t catch up to her.

Yu Yan stood rooted to the spot. The classroom quickly emptied until only Xiao Jing remained sitting in the front row, as if waiting for Yu Yan to walk by so she could ruthlessly mock her.

The back door was locked today. To leave, she had to pass right by her. Yu Yan walked down with her head lowered, and sure enough, Xiao Jing called out to her.

    “Hold on a second.”

Yu Yan furrowed her brows and looked at her.

What was she going to say? Was she going to bring up again that Yu Yan wasn’t a student here and was just auditing for free? Aside from the first time when she took a seat up front so Fu Yunqing would see her, she had sat in empty seats at the back every time since. Even when she was bored, she never struck up conversations with the students next to her, nor had she bothered anyone, Yu Yan thought aggrievedly.

Yu Yan was actually quite prone to tear incontinence1. She could never win arguments, nor could she match others in terms of imposing presence.

“What is your relationship with Teacher Fu now, exactly?” Xiao Jing’s tone was cold and hard, twisting into an arrogant, high-and-mighty interrogation in Yu Yan’s ears. Why was everyone so fierce and impolite? Yu Yan’s nose stung. Her eyes turned red, and tears fell uncontrollably.

“We have no relationship at all!” she cried, wiping her tears. Throwing out that single sentence, she hurried out of the classroom.
