    Yan-jie is Unfathomable

Turns out she still loves her very much

The school wasn’t particularly close to Lu Yu’s place. By the time Yu Yan got home, Lu Yu was already back from work, sitting on the sofa.

Seeing Yu Yan collapse limply beside her, Lu Yu knew at a glance that things hadn’t gone smoothly—or at least, hadn’t reached the point where the Young Miss1 would be satisfied and happy. The Young Miss was like a little fox who thought herself terribly clever, setting out to hunt with great enthusiasm, only to return empty-handed without catching the human she wanted, thoroughly discouraged.

“So what happened?” Lu Yu sighed.

“Much harder than I imagined,” Yu Yan said weakly. “Much more serious than I imagined.”

Fu Yunqing was difficult to deal with.

She discovered this wasn’t something she could resolve by acting cute and pouting2. Every time she went to see her, she got scolded. The atmosphere became oppressively heavy. Yu Yan was completely passive. She was tired. She didn’t want to do this anymore. She wanted to give up.

That was just how Yu Yan was. She couldn’t handle any hardship. She only liked things she could control and environments that made her feel comfortable. Fu Yunqing said she had no right—well, what could she do about that? Then she had no right. Anyway, next time she went looking for her, she’d just get blocked by that same line again.

“It’s not like I can’t live without her,” Yu Yan said sulkily.

“Right~ You can’t live without her,” Lu Yu comforted.

“So, livestreaming tonight?” Given Yu Yan’s personality, if she’d been wronged, wouldn’t she go find some other jiejie to comfort her?

But Yu Yan said weakly, “No stream.”

Her energy for the day was completely drained. She didn’t want to please anyone.

The next day, Lu Yu assumed she’d given up—after all, the Young Miss was exactly the type with three-minute heat3. Unexpectedly, after dinner, she suddenly announced, “I’m going out for a bit.”

    “Where?”

“To drink, of course,” the Young Miss said carelessly.

Oh, so she was going online to find a jiejie for comfort.

    No, Lu Yu thought wrong.

Her Yan-jie was more unfathomable than she’d imagined.

Today was the last day of October. In some northern places, snow was already drifting down in lazy flurries. Yuncheng was forgiving—only requiring a thick coat to move through the city’s night. But Yu Yan had still underestimated the temperature. Her thin silk stockings weren’t quite enough.

She crossed her arms and quickly climbed into the business car parked by the roadside. Half an hour later, she stepped into “hear” for the third time.

This time she didn’t take a booth. She had no intention of letting anyone keep her company. She deliberately chose a seat far from the crowd, ordered a Long Island Iced Tea4 that would get her drunk easily, and glanced toward the bar from time to time.

She was thinking: Is Ran-jiejie here tonight?

After waiting a while without seeing her, Yu Yan took out her phone and messaged Ran Ling: 【Is Ran-jiejie at hear tonight?】

    Ran-jiejie: 【Not tonight, no.】

    What a coincidence. Well then.

    Ran-jiejie asked: 【Why do you always drink?】

Yu Yan curled her lips: 【To increase revenue for Ran-jiejie and Yu Boss~】

    Ran Ling: 【Such a sweet mouth.】

Ran Ling: 【If you’re alone, be careful. If anything happens, find a server—they know you. Don’t drink too much. It’s not good for your body, and it’s not safe either.】

She really was so gentle… Yu Yan melted a little, sending a cute sticker in response, saying thank you.

    Ran Ling: 【headpat.jpg】

She’d discovered something she and Ran Ling had in common—Ran-jiejie also had lots of cute stickers. Fu Yunqing had none.

Ran-jiejie was fun. Fu Yunqing was so stiff.

Closing her phone, Yu Yan picked up her drink and downed half of it. She glanced at the server by the bar and indeed saw her quietly observing her. She secretly curled her lips.

She hadn’t come to savor wine. Frowning, she finished the Long Island Iced Tea in a few gulps. As soon as she finished, her face started flushing, heat rushing straight to the back of her head.

She declined the people who came to hit on her. To the ones who wouldn’t leave her alone, she said stop bothering me. She ordered another Long Island Iced Tea and sat alone, listening to the folk songs from the live singer, drinking silently. This one went down just as fast.

She was getting drunk. The back of her head was hot. She was so dizzy she couldn’t even sit up straight. Clearly this was a sign of being drunk—anyone with sense would stop at this point. But she willfully threw aside the promise she’d just made to Ran Ling and ordered another strong drink—

The server who’d been watching her from afar hesitated when she received the order. Sure enough, they’d all been instructed by Ran Ling to keep an extra eye on Yu Yan. Seeing that Yu Yan seemed determined to drink herself into oblivion, after some hesitation, she messaged Ran Ling:

:【Ran-jie, that little sister doesn’t seem very happy. She looks like she came to drown her sorrows. Two Long Island Iced Teas in less than twenty minutes, and she still wants an Irish Coffee.】

:【Should we still serve her? Or should we go talk to her, send her home?】

Sigh… Ran Ling sighed when she received the message. She’d promised to drink less so obediently, but going back on her word came so naturally. What to do? Ran Ling didn’t really have any relationship with Yu Yan, no right to manage her affairs. But she didn’t dare let her carry on this way either. Better to ask someone else to be safe.

So she could only screenshot the chat and send it to a certain someone, then ask in genuine confusion: 【You still haven’t accepted her friend request? Didn’t you already agree to let me give her your WeChat?】

Yu Yan waited over ten minutes and still didn’t get her drink. But she wasn’t anxious at all. She propped her chin up and let the alcohol flush her face red. She didn’t resist the dizziness. From time to time she glanced at the phone lying flat on the table, narrowing her eyes slightly. Her drunken pride carried an air of certainty.

Before long, the server came over empty-handed with the drink menu, telling her the fresh cream for the Irish Coffee was out of stock at the shop, and introducing another low-alcohol drink newly developed by Yu Boss.

Though Yu Yan’s face was flushed red, her wits were still with her. How could she not understand what was going on? She said “oh” drunkenly: “If you don’t have it, forget it. I’ll go somewhere else to drink.”

Saying that, she propped herself up on the table, grabbed her bag, stumbled a bit, and walked off.

The server stood there dumbfounded, watching Yu Yan disappear into the night beyond the glass doors. A colleague came over to ask what happened. She said: “She said she’s going somewhere else to drink.”

“What? Then tell Ran-jie right away! Two Long Island Iced Teas! And she drank them so fast! What if she faints on the street somewhere?”

Yu Yan had lived this long, loved so many women, had such rich romantic experience (experience flirting with women without taking responsibility)—of course she wasn’t someone slow when it came to feelings. She was a sharp, clever woman who knew how to think.

Carrying her cheap bag bought online for a few dozen yuan, one she wouldn’t feel bad about losing, she walked unsteadily down the main road in Yuncheng. Soaked in strong alcohol, she thought: What exactly does Fu Yunqing feel for her now? Annoyance? Disgust? Rejection? Every time she was so harsh, making Yu Yan so afraid of her that just being alone with her made her chest tight, her breathing difficult, her hands and feet cold. When had Yu Yan ever been so introverted? What was this about? Were they never going to interact again?

Fu Yunqing held resentment toward her. But how did that work? Thinking back carefully, Yu Yan didn’t only feel her resentment. She also sensed in her eyes some subtle, deep emotion that existed alongside the resentment. That wasn’t disgust pushing her away. Yu Yan only felt herself being enveloped by her.

The first time Yu Yan called out to her. The second time Yu Yan followed her. She was resolute, yet every time she paused for her. Her words were sharp, yet she always waited—waiting for Yu Yan to answer something. Answer what?

    Yu Yan thought muzzily.

Last time before Yu Yan came to hear, she’d asked Ran Ling if she’d be at the shop. That night not only was Ran Ling there, Fu Yunqing was too. Yu Yan was even called over by Ran Ling to say hello. Ran-jiejie was so gentle, so cute. So why had Fu Yunqing come?

She didn’t seem like someone who liked bars. Yu Yan knew she preferred quiet—she was the type who’d like to curl up alone in a tea room, slowly sipping tea.

And that Weibo post. In the past, just because Yu Yan drank with classmates without her permission, she’d been hit on the palm with a belt, and had to promise never to drink outside her sight again. Fu Yunqing was so controlling, so jealous… So why? Why did she appear that night, and happen to leave right when she did?

She still couldn’t stand seeing her drink outside her sight, right?

Was all of this coincidence? Yu Yan couldn’t help thinking toward the direction of Fu Yunqing loving and hating her at the same time.

Back then Yu Yan couldn’t understand Fu Yunqing’s eyes. Now, she seemed to understand a little.

She wanted to see—did Fu Yunqing care about her or not?

Leaving the noisy, chaotic bar, pushing through the glass doors, walking as the cold night wind pushed at her in gusts, she didn’t even know which direction she was heading or where she’d ended up.

The cold wind was chilling. She felt a moment of clarity and relief. But the strong alcohol she’d poured into herself wouldn’t let her off so easily. It surged back like revenge. Yu Yan was so dizzy every step felt like missing the ground. She couldn’t stand anymore. She crouched down, holding onto a pole by the roadside.

    Ahhhh…

She’d overestimated her tolerance. She’d been thinking about going to another bar to keep drinking. Now she couldn’t tell north from south. What to do? A tiny bit of regret. Yu Yan took out her phone to call Lu Yu. But her long hair covered her face, the light was dim, and face unlock didn’t work. She tried her password a few times—wrong. She had to wait 60 seconds to retry.

    Ugh…

Yu Yan propped her hands on her knees, trying to stand. Suddenly, on the locked phone screen, a WeChat notification popped up—Fu Yunqing accepted your friend request.

    Yu Yan stared blankly.

    She accepted? She really accepted?

Yu Yan thought she was seeing things from being drunk. She tried to tap into the screen but accidentally swiped the notification away. And she couldn’t unlock the phone… She could only stew in anxiety, getting more and more flustered. She was already drunk, and now she looked even more pathetic.

“Little girl, why did you drink so much?”

A kind-hearted auntie walking by came over and reached out to support her, worried and distressed: “Why drink so much alone? Do you have friends? Where’s your home? Auntie will take you back. Are you alone? Do you need me to call a taxi for you?”

“My daughter is just like you. Often goes out alone and gets completely wasted. Doesn’t know danger at all. Walking on the street like this, you could get hit by a car and die without even knowing. You can’t do this, you know? Your mother would be heartbroken.”

    Suddenly, Yu Yan calmed down.

    Mom…

Yu Yan took a deep breath and said seriously: “Thank you, Auntie. Um… I’m with my friend. I’m waiting here. She’ll come get me in a bit.”

“Really? Does Auntie need to stay with you? Is your friend reliable?”

“Very reliable. No need to stay with me. Thank you, Auntie.”

The auntie still seemed worried, but eventually left after Yu Yan’s repeated refusals. Yu Yan thought—what the auntie said was right. Every mother would worry about her daughter. Even seeing someone else’s child would make her think of her own.

She remembered—she used to call Fu Yunqing “Mommy” too.

Fu Yunqing had once loved her like a daughter.

Yu Yan realized her current state was perfect—drunk, crouching by the roadside, dazed and disheveled. If Fu Yunqing saw this scene, what would she think?

A daughter this pathetic—no mother could stand it, right?

The 60 seconds suddenly didn’t feel so long. Anyway, the anxious one now was her. Yu Yan needed to string her along, make her worry a bit more.

Sigh… It hadn’t been that long. Yu Yan hadn’t even walked out of this street before she was already rushing over. Turns out she still loved her very much.

Everything had finally become something Yu Yan could control. She liked that.

The 60 seconds passed. The phone could accept the password again. This time Yu Yan squinted and typed extra carefully. As soon as she entered the chat, she saw the words “typing…” at the top.

What was she going to say?

What would she say? Yu Yan waited expectantly. But “typing…” stopped abruptly. She still didn’t send any message. The chat was quiet, as if Yu Yan had imagined it.

The more you delete and retype, the less honest you are. The more you hesitate, the easier you are to manipulate.

Sure enough, she had to take the initiative herself. Yu Yan was bold as could be. Without a second thought, she video-called Fu Yunqing—

The phone screen was filled with Yu Yan’s flushed face. Behind her was the dark empty street, fallen leaves scattered across the ground, very much in the frame. She crouched right under the streetlight. The dim yellow light gave her a vibe she was fairly satisfied with. Her bangs fluttered in the cold wind. The corners of her eyes were red from the alcohol. Her brow was furrowed uncomfortably. Her eyes were hazy with drunkenness.

She looked at her pitiful, perfect self in the camera and was very satisfied. She looked exactly like someone who’d been abandoned here. She quietly waited for Fu Yunqing to pick up. Ten seconds, twenty seconds… She knew Fu Yunqing was definitely on the other end. Yu Yan waited, her discomfort making her lose focus from time to time. Suddenly, Fu Yunqing answered.

The phone screen jumped. It went completely black. Yu Yan’s face jumped to a small box in the upper right corner. Yu Yan froze. Fu Yunqing had answered, but she wasn’t showing her face.

The blurry image before her made it impossible to tell what or where it was. There was no sound from her side either.

Yu Yan called out to her carefully: Fu-jiejie…”

There was no response from the other side. The surprise in Yu Yan’s eyes slowly faded. She buried her face into her arms on her knees, leaving only her eyes visible to look at the screen, silently facing off with Fu Yunqing, letting her long hair be blown messy by the wind.

She knew she wasn’t in the right. Calling was presumptuous. So she couldn’t be righteous about it. She deliberately put herself in a very humble position. But her eyes were beautiful enough—even drunk, they were lively. Head down, face buried, video calling—she looked like a little animal curled up from the cold, not making a sound, pitiful. Even more disarming.

After a while, a woman’s voice came from the other side, questioning: “What are you doing squatting there?”
