    Anger

Not a Single Word of Truth

Yu Yan’s arm was gripped very, very tightly by Fu Yunqing—so tightly that Fu Yunqing’s hand was actually trembling. Fu Yunqing’s eyes never wavered from her reaction for a single second. Although she was the one asking the question, she was utterly terrified of Yu Yan’s gaze and the words that were about to leave her mouth.

    She was in absolute agony.

    Has Yanyan recovered her memories?

    No, please, no…

From the moment she found out that Yanyan had lost her temper with Dan Lin until now, Fu Yunqing had been suffering for hours. She had no idea why everything had been perfectly fine before they left, only for things to suddenly turn out like this. The answer quickly pointed to the possibility she feared most. She had thought about so many things and felt so much pain; she had already humbled herself to the dust, begging endlessly in the depths of her heart.

    Yanyan, please don’t leave…

She couldn’t bear her leaving again. She really couldn’t bear it…

Yu Yan took a deep breath, looked at her, pulled her hand free, and said coldly, “I don’t like having someone spying on me wherever I go.”

    Fu Yunqing froze. Spying…

She didn’t know whether she should feel relieved or panicked. Yanyan hadn’t recovered her memories, but she had already begun to resent her desire for control.

    Had she discovered something?

Did Lu Yu say something to her?

Fu Yunqing’s heart tightened, and she knit her brows. She should have foreseen this; she should never have let her go out to meet Lu Yu.

Yu Yan broke away from her hand and turned to leave, looking as if she wanted to cut ties with her once and for all. Fu Yunqing grabbed her tightly. “Yanyan!”

She looked into her eyes imploringly. “Do you dislike Dan Lin following you? Did she bother you? I’m sorry, it’s my fault. I didn’t pay enough attention to your feelings. If you don’t like it, we won’t have her follow you in the future, alright?”

With Yu Yan so furious, Fu Yunqing could no longer care that the words “no matter where I go in the future, I want Dan Lin to follow me” were something Yu Yan had once personally promised her.

She only wanted everything to return to the way it was as quickly as possible.

But to Yu Yan, she just seemed incredibly hypocritical.

Her response was completely sidestepping the real issue. Was this just a matter of whether she liked it or if she was bothered? Did Fu Yunqing not know in her heart why Yu Yan hated it so much?

    Hypocritical.

    So incredibly hypocritical.

Yu Yan didn’t want to pay any attention to her. She shook her off and walked straight ahead, with Fu Yunqing following close behind her every step. “Where are you going?”

Yu Yan didn’t even look at her, her voice cold. “What does where I go have to do with you?”

Fu Yunqing pursed her lips, deeply hurt. Swallowing her bitterness, she nodded. “Alright, I’ll accompany you.”

    Who wants your company?

Yu Yan grumbled in her heart.

But there was no driving Fu Yunqing away; she would never let go. Wherever Yu Yan went, she followed. The two of them walked briskly, one after the other, down the nighttime streets as cold wind swept over them in waves. Yu Yan wasn’t wearing a scarf, and her coat’s collar wasn’t very high. She shrugged her neck and crossed her arms, her brows knit tightly as the biting wind left her head spinning and her eyes barely able to open.

Fu Yunqing walked beside her, knowing she was cold, repeatedly trying to take her hand and urging her to go back to the car to talk things over. Yu Yan found her incredibly annoying—even her gentleness and patience were irritating—but she really couldn’t bear the cold any longer. Walking like this wasn’t a solution. Finally, she stopped in her tracks and climbed into the backseat of the car without a word.

Fu Yunqing also got in, immediately telling the driver, “Turn up the heater.”

    “Right away,” Dan Lin answered.

Seeing Yu Yan sulking and refusing to put on her seatbelt, Fu Yunqing leaned over to help her fasten it. Spotting this, Yu Yan immediately said she didn’t need help.

She pulled the seatbelt on herself and stared coldly out the window, looking as if she didn’t want Fu Yunqing to touch her even a single bit.

Fu Yunqing’s hand froze in mid-air. She stared at her in disbelief, her chest feeling tight and a sharp pain piercing her heart.

Dan Lin knew Yu Yan’s current tantrum was entirely because of her. Shrinking back, she did her best to lower her presence to the absolute minimum, not even daring to take a single deep breath.

    “…What’s wrong?”

Fu Yunqing looked hurt at the cold-faced girl, asking softly, “Why on earth don’t you want to pay attention to me? Why are you angry with me? Can you tell me?”

Fu Yunqing’s temper was so good it almost bordered on submissive. Seeing her like this, Yu Yan also felt incredibly uncomfortable inside. Though she desperately wanted to ignore her, she still asked coldly, “Do you just view me as your pet?”

Fu Yunqing immediately denied it. “No, of course not. Who told you that?”

Yu Yan finally turned her head to face her, muttering in dissatisfaction, “Does someone need to tell me? I can feel it myself! Whose girlfriend in this world needs a bodyguard hovering over her just to have afternoon tea with a friend?”

“Is the public safety in Yuncheng really so bad that I need to be monitored every single second? Are you that afraid I’ll get kidnapped the moment I step outside? Or in your eyes, am I just a little dog who doesn’t understand anything and has absolutely no ability to care for herself? Even if you don’t have time to walk me when I’m let out, do you still have to find someone to hold my leash for you?”

Every single one of her words stabbed sharply into Fu Yunqing’s heart. She shook her head in agony. “It’s not…”

Yu Yan added, “Do you know how it felt when I was chatting with Lu Yu and suddenly saw a pair of eyes tightly staring at my every move? I felt like I wasn’t your girlfriend—I felt like your prisoner!”

“Yanyan, it’s not like that…” Fu Yunqing grasped her hand, saying urgently, “I’m sorry. I made you feel uncomfortable. I don’t treat you as a pet, let alone a prisoner. Please don’t think that, alright? In my eyes, you are a person—you are my child. I was just so worried about you… I’m sorry. This is my fault. I was too paranoid. Since it makes you uncomfortable, it won’t happen again in the future. Is that okay?”

“Can you forgive jiejie this once? Please don’t be angry anymore, alright?” Fu Yunqing couldn’t bear losing her, nor could she handle Yu Yan’s doubt and dissatisfaction. She couldn’t stand this loss of control and the terrifying uncertainty that came with it, pleading desperately.

Yu Yan let out a cold snort after hearing this, turning her head back toward the window. However, she didn’t throw off the hand holding hers.

This made Fu Yunqing feel a little more at ease. She steadied her trembling breath and apologized once more. “I’m sorry…”

Seeing that Yu Yan was still unwilling to pay attention to her, she held her hand tightly. “We’ll talk once we get home.”

Yu Yan did not express any rejection of the “home” she spoke of. This meant that everything was still within Fu Yunqing’s control, which made her feel even more at ease.

Along the way, Yu Yan stared out the window, while the woman beside her never shifted her gaze from her face, her expression tense and heavy with worry. Their hands were held together, and Yu Yan could feel that Fu Yunqing’s palm was sweating, making her own hand sticky as well.

Once the car drove into the underground garage and came to a stop, Yu Yan pulled her hand out of hers without a single word. She opened the car door and stepped out, not waiting for her at all, heading straight to the elevator lobby on her own. Fu Yunqing hurried after her and entered the elevator with her.

“Still angry?” Inside the elevator, Fu Yunqing reached out to take her hand, then let go and wrapped an arm around her waist. She pressed her body very close, almost drawing her entirely into her embrace. Lowering her head close to her, she murmured softly, “Are you still angry with jiejie?”

    “…”

Yu Yan kept a sullen face, pouting and remaining silent.

People always take an inch and want a mile—even someone as mature and reserved as Fu Yunqing on ordinary days was no exception. Seeing that Yu Yan didn’t resist her drawing near, she pulled her completely into her arms. She rubbed her shoulders, kissed her cheek, and coaxed her in a soft voice, “Don’t be angry anymore, alright? It won’t happen again in the future. Let’s not let this affect our relationship, okay?”

Yu Yan turned her head away and pouted, “No. I’m just angry.”

Still angry… Then what was she to do? Fu Yunqing was no longer as panicked as before, only assuming that she was throwing a little tantrum, and still coaxed her with a good temper, “Then what do I have to do for you to stop being angry?”

Fu Yunqing had always been very good at acting cute, her tone carrying a few hints of affectionate playfulness. Wrapped so tightly in her arms, smelling the warm scent on her body, and hearing her coax her in such a tone, there were probably very few women in the world who could resist.

Yu Yan silently cursed her in her heart for being too scheming, but she kept her mouth shut. Still, her pout wasn’t as pronounced anymore, as if she had been coaxed into softening a bit.

Fu Yunqing held her a little tighter, murmuring softly in her ear. The elevator reached the thirty-sixth floor, and Yu Yan broke away from her embrace to run ahead and open the door. Fu Yunqing followed at a leisurely pace, casting a reassuring glance at the little black cat who was squatting by the entrance waiting, only to be completely ignored by her jiejie.

As Yu Yan sat on the entryway bench to change her shoes, Fu Yunqing said to her, “You haven’t had dinner yet, have you? I’m sorry. Because today was too sudden, I didn’t ask Auntie Zhang to come over to cook. Shall I make something for you to eat?”

“No way. I’m not eating any food you make.” Yu Yan finished changing her shoes, stood up, and walked off.

Fu Yunqing remained patient. “Then I’ll call Auntie Zhang over to make something for you, alright?”

“No. I don’t have an appetite.”

Fu Yunqing finally knit her brows and quickly caught up to hold her back. “Even if you don’t have an appetite, you have to eat a little. It’s bad for your stomach.”

Yu Yan knew Fu Yunqing was exceptionally stubborn about this; if she didn’t eat something, she probably wouldn’t let it go. Giving her a glare, she simply went to the refrigerator to find a slice of toast, stuffing it into her mouth and chewing on it in big bites. “I’m eating this.”

How could she act so stubborn and prideful even when she was angry?

Fu Yunqing felt helpless but let out a soft chuckle. “Isn’t it too dry to eat it like that? Let me pour you a glass of milk, alright?”

“No, it’s not dry at all.” Yu Yan chewed a few times, forced the bread down with an effort, and said to her, “You are not allowed to sleep with me tonight.”

Not allowed to sleep with her?

Fu Yunqing pursed her lips, hurt showing in her eyes as if she didn’t agree. “Yanyan…”

Still trying to act cute? She wasn’t going to fall for it. Yu Yan immediately barked, “You are simply not allowed in my room tonight, period!”

Afraid of setting her off again, Fu Yunqing sighed and compromised. “Alright. I was in the wrong, so I should be punished. I’m punished to sleep in the guest room tonight, okay? Does that help you stop being angry a little?”

“Hmph. Not in the slightest,” Yu Yan said coldly, her tone full of hostility as she turned and walked upstairs. It was the first time the cat had ever seen her jiejie look so fierce, and she didn’t dare to follow her, anxiously pacing in circles around her mama’s legs.

Fu Yunqing watched Yu Yan’s figure disappear completely at the top of the stairs. Her eyes dimmed, revealing a hint of exhaustion, but she ultimately breathed a sigh of relief. Crouching down to stroke the black cat, she said to her, “Good girl, jiejie is just angry. She’ll hug you tomorrow.”

    “Meow~”

    Meanwhile, upstairs.

Yu Yan entered the room and peered outside. Making sure Fu Yunqing hadn’t followed her, she quickly shut the door and locked it from the inside. Then, she ran over to the nightstand to search for her identity documents—the ones she had brought back from Lu Yu’s place, which Fu Yunqing had placed here.

Fu Yunqing was simply unbelievable; she was simply too wicked. Yu Yan really had not expected that even at this stage, she would still keep trying to coax and deceive her. If Yu Yan hadn’t actively brought it up, she would have continued to keep the things she did hidden and secret, using those words to coax and dismiss her, and saying them so pitifully, so sincerely, and so beautifully. If Yu Yan didn’t know her true colors, she definitely would have been unable to resist forgiving her right there in the car.

Forgiving her would, of course, allow her to continue staying together with her in complete ignorance. But Yu Yan knew that she had done more than just that one thing. Since she wouldn’t admit it and still kept it hidden, those sweet-talking words sounded exceptionally hypocritical to her ears.

    Truly so hypocritical.

Did she plan on deceiving her for the rest of her life? What other even more outrageous things would she do in the future?

The more Yu Yan thought about it, the more her skin crawled, as terrified as if she had walked straight into a wolf’s den. That woman was really too good at deceiving and manipulating people. She was too detestable, too good at acting, and didn’t have a single word of truth in her mouth. Yu Yan was no match for her; she had to escape.

She had to leave tonight; she couldn’t wait until tomorrow.

Yu Yan searched the nightstand top to bottom, inside and out. What left her feeling helpless was that she couldn’t even see a trace of her identity documents. She clearly remembered Fu Yunqing putting them here that day—how could they be gone?

Yu Yan felt a surge of panic, quickly searching every single cabinet and drawer in the room that could be searched, but she still couldn’t find them.

    She couldn’t find them…

    She really couldn’t find them…

They were nowhere to be found.

Yu Yan’s eyes went wide. Fu Yunqing had hidden all of her identity documents!
