    The Happy Life Before Divorce

    Before Divorce 2

    She Kissed Me Forcefully

    “Have you eaten?”

    “Yes.”

    “What did you have?”

    “I forgot.”

She hadn’t said a word in the car, and even after returning home, she wore a cold expression, as if someone owed her millions. Fu Yunqing good-naturedly checked on her, but her responses dripped with resentment.

She was clearly throwing a tantrum.

Fu Yunqing fell silent for a moment, pressing her lips together as she watched her. For some reason, Yu Yan couldn’t bring herself to meet her eyes. She didn’t know why, but she felt a strange pang of guilt—guilt that quickly morphed into defensive anger. She stormed straight upstairs and pushed open the door to their bedroom.

Living together, sharing a bed, sleeping side by side every night. The left side was Fu Yunqing’s, the right side was hers—that had been the arrangement from the start, though it was purely nominal. Yu Yan was thick-skinned and clingy, always wanting to cuddle and hold on. Within two minutes of lying down, she’d find some excuse to squirm over to Fu Yunqing’s side and insist on sleeping in her arms.

Fu Yunqing was always willing to humor her, even patiently patting her back to lull her to sleep. It made her feel incredibly secure.

    What was this, then?

For two people in a marriage of convenience, this was far too intimate—ambiguous, unclear, what kind of arrangement was this?

    Hmph.

Yu Yan grabbed her pillow and stuffed-animal bolster, hugged them to her chest, and turned to leave. Fu Yunqing stood by the door watching this unfold, and finally furrowed her brow.

“Where are you going?” As they brushed past each other, Fu Yunqing caught her wrist.

Fu Yunqing’s palm was slightly cool, her grip firm. She turned and looked at her deeply.

    Yu Yan stopped.

She took two deep breaths and said testily, “I want to sleep in my own room.”

    “Why?”

Fu Yunqing asked, “Did I do something to upset you?”

“No.” Detecting the concern in her voice, Yu Yan played coy. “I just think this isn’t a good idea.”

“Hasn’t it always been this way? Why do you suddenly think it’s not?” Fu Yunqing softened her voice. “Can you tell me?”

She was the one who’d insisted on this arrangement in the first place. Whatever the current setup was, it was what she’d wanted. She clearly loved it—loved sleeping next to her, loved sleeping in her arms. Everything had been fine yesterday, so why did she suddenly think it wasn’t?

Fu Yunqing refused to leave anything ambiguous, least of all when it came to feelings.

    She needed a reason.

She needed the chance to fix whatever was wrong.

Fu Yunqing released her wrist and reached up to smooth the hair at her temples. “Yanyan, tell me why. Okay?”

    “…”

Yu Yan really couldn’t handle her.

How could she be so good-tempered—still this gentle and patient after being given attitude the entire way home? By comparison, Yu Yan felt all the more unreasonable.

    Unreasonable…

She knew that being unreasonable was annoying.

“We’re just a marriage of convenience,”

Yu Yan shot her a glance, her bravado flagging considerably, and mumbled, “Sleeping together every day will get in the way of your love life.”

Fu Yunqing was quiet for a moment, then asked, “Love life?”

“Mm-hmm.” Yu Yan averted her gaze, stammering, “You know, that student who gave you lilies before—don’t you like her quite a bit?”

    “…”

She said sourly, “Are you really not going to consider pursuing a relationship? She has great taste—the flowers she gave you were so beautiful. She must be a gentle, attentive girl who loves life.”

    “…”

After saying this, Yu Yan clenched her fists and pricked up her ears.

Why wasn’t Fu Yunqing saying anything?

    Why no reaction?

After a long pause, she added very quietly, “She’d be the perfect match for a jiejie like you.”

Fu Yunqing still didn’t answer. The silence stretched on as if infinitely prolonged. Yu Yan didn’t dare look at her expression. She stood frozen, every second excruciating, until she felt she was at her breaking point. Just as she was about to flee before crumbling—she was pulled again by Fu Yunqing.

Her brain briefly short-circuited. The woman pulled her close, the two of them face to face. Yu Yan kept her head down; Fu Yunqing leaned in. She stepped back instinctively, and her back met the cold tile wall.

    Nowhere left to retreat.

Had Fu Yunqing just… wall-pinned her?

Realizing this, Yu Yan finally lifted her head. Fu Yunqing gazed down at her, backlit, her long lashes casting a shadow beneath her eyes.

Making those eyes, flecked with hints of a smile, look so soft and deep.

She still didn’t speak, but kept watching her with that gaze, and cupped her cheek. The moment her cool palm cradled Yu Yan’s jaw, Yu Yan nervously turned her face away.

Fu Yunqing then raised her other hand and cupped the other side of her face.

Fu Yunqing’s palm glided gently over her neck, then moved upward, lifting her face along with it, leaving Yu Yan no way to avoid her gaze. And then, slowly, she lowered her head.

    She…

Yu Yan’s mind went blank. She clutched the pillow against her chest, her breathing growing heavier unconsciously—heavy enough to produce an audible huff.

Fu Yunqing cupped her face and drew close slowly, pressing her forehead gently against Yu Yan’s. Their noses brushed. She paused there, feeling.

Feeling Yu Yan’s emotions, feeling her breath and that faint trembling.

She sensed that Yanyan wasn’t resisting—just nervous, perhaps with a hint of anticipation. The corners of her lips curved imperceptibly. She tilted her chin up, and her lips descended—covering Yu Yan’s.

She kissed her once, then drew back slightly, supporting the nape of Yu Yan’s neck, and kissed her again.

This time it wasn’t just a brush. She took Yu Yan’s lips between her own, kissing softly, deepening by degrees. Yu Yan quickly felt her warmth and dampness—this wasn’t the playful peck from before. Fu Yunqing was really kissing her.

Fu Yunqing cupped her face, pressed her against the wall, and kissed her…

She had no idea how to refuse, no possibility of refusing… Yu Yan parted her lips to meet her, letting go of the bolster in her arms, reaching around Fu Yunqing’s waist, boldly darting her tongue out to lick her.

The kiss deepened instantly. This was a true deep kiss—lips and tongues entwining, soft, wet, dense… It lasted for several minutes as they lost all sense of self.

When they parted, Yu Yan’s face was flushed red.

Her breathing was heavy—from oxygen deprivation, from nerves. She awkwardly wiped her moist lips with her arm, glanced up at Fu Yunqing, and protested softly, “Why did you kiss me?”

“Sorry.” Fu Yunqing wiped away the lingering moisture at the corner of her mouth.

“You didn’t want to reply to my messages today—was it because of that?” Seeing her refuse to admit it, Fu Yunqing smiled. “You were jealous.”

    “…”

    “Were you jealous?”

“I always thought my love life was my life with you.”

“That student is ill. She needs to take time off for surgery. She wasn’t trying to be with me—she just wanted to confide in me. So I accepted her flowers and told her to get treatment and face it bravely.”

Yu Yan looked up in surprise, asking anxiously, “Is it serious?”

“If the surgery goes well, it shouldn’t be a major problem.”

Yu Yan frowned. “Then her surgery has to succeed.”

    Fu Yunqing replied, “Mm.”

    “It will.”

    “…”

Not knowing what to say, they fell into silence again. Yu Yan felt utterly mortified.

She had actually been angry at Fu Yunqing over this for days, and had even said those contrary things about telling her to consider being with someone else.

So mortifying. When had her playing-hard-to-get tactics gotten this clumsy?

Does love really make you stupid?

    “Still jealous?”

    “…No more.” She answered honestly.

She knew she’d already lost, completely at Fu Yunqing’s mercy.

She hadn’t expected Fu Yunqing to ask, “Are you jealous because you like me?”

Without waiting for her answer, Fu Yunqing continued, “I like you.”

“From the first moment I saw you, I thought you were fascinating, adorable. Being with you feels wonderful. I love your energy, your slyness, how you depend on me, how you cling to me. I care about you more with each passing day.”

    Fu Yunqing… was so direct…

“You act like you really like me, and that makes me happy. But you seem to like a lot of people—you spread your enthusiasm around. For the longest time, I couldn’t be sure whether you truly liked me, and I worried it was just novelty.”

Fu Yunqing saw through every one of Yu Yan’s little schemes, but couldn’t be certain, so she had held back. She had her own quiet tactics, too—indulging Yu Yan’s demands on her, often discreetly, casually flirting: patting her head, stroking her face; wearing nightgowns after a shower that would make her blush; when Yu Yan reddened and froze, offering to cuddle; giving her a playful tap on the behind when an embrace ended; when she said she was thirsty, feeding her water from her own cup.

She loved seeing Yu Yan blush in front of her, and hated when she gave her attention to others.

“Yanyan, I don’t feel very secure. You didn’t reply to my messages today, and I was worried. I waited outside your dorm for over half an hour, not sure whether I should tell you. I wanted to see you, but I was afraid you’d resent my pushing too hard.”

“You’re right. I don’t want to keep things unclear anymore, either.”

“Do you like me? Have you ever thought about making us official?”

“If we’re together, I want you to like me, and only me, with all your heart.”

    “…”

    “Can you?”

Fu Yunqing knew exactly how to bewitch her. Yu Yan seemed to be struggling with a bit of hesitation, and she didn’t want to let her agonize any longer. She leaned down, drew close, and kissed her again. After a while, at the moment Yu Yan was most lost in it, she pulled back and asked in a husky voice, “Do you like me?”

    “…Mm.”

“Will you be with me, and like only me?”

Yu Yan wrapped her arms around her neck. “Mm…”

Fu Yunqing smiled, cupped the back of her head, and deepened the kiss.

    “…”

Kissing was truly addictive. They kissed until they were sweating in the air-conditioned room. Yu Yan twined around her, the two of them pausing and resuming, before they finally managed to pull apart. Fu Yunqing dusted off the pillow and bolster that had fallen to the floor and placed them back in their original spot on the bed—a clear declaration that Yu Yan was no longer allowed to sleep in the guest room.

She went into the bathroom to shower. Yu Yan flopped on the sofa, buried her face, and screamed internally. It took ages to recover, and she was still flushed and breathless. Putting on airs, she pretentiously typed the following on Weibo—

September 5, 2022, 22:50【I’m doomed. Playing hard to get backfired—jiejie stopped flirting with me, kissed me forcefully, and asked whether I really like her, whether I want to be with her, and if I’m with her I can only like her alone. She’s such a good kisser… Nothing to do but behave and settle down for jiejie.】
