    Bedtime Story

“Once upon a time, there was a mountain. In the mountain… in the mountain there was a cave. In the cave lived a group of foxes: Fox Grandmother, Fox Aunt, Fox Mommy, and Fox Baby.”

“They were beautiful red foxes with fluffy fur, agile bodies, and sharp teeth. They caught plenty of prey every day and ruled their mountain domain.”

“Fox Baby was Fox Mommy’s only child, raised carefully by her mommy year-round, who poured all her love and devotion into her. Doted on by Fox Grandmother, Fox Aunt, and many other elder foxes, Fox Baby was naturally bright, healthy, innocent, kind, and exceedingly beautiful.”

“She was the most beautiful and the youngest fox on that mountain.”

“She was very likable; wherever she went, the little animals around her found her adorable.”

At this point, Yu Yan giggled.

Fu Yunqing’s gaze fell on her. Yu Yan cleared her throat and continued, “She feared nothing in heaven or earth, feared no jie or meimei, and was never stage-frightened wherever she went or whoever she faced—except…”

“Except… except… she was a little afraid of Mommy.”

“The only one in this world who could manage Fox Baby was Fox Mommy.”

“Fox Mommy loved her very much, more than anyone else in the world. Fox Mommy was very gentle to her, very doting, yet also very strict. She simply did not dare disobey her. Fox Mommy managed her strictly, never allowing her to go provoke jie or meimei. Whenever her playful spirit flared and she was caught by Mommy, she would be disciplined—scruffed by the back of her neck and carried back to the den.”

At this point, Yu Yan’s cheeks flushed slightly, and her voice weakened a little, “Even though she was already this big, already reaching the age where she could mate with other foxes, Fox Mommy still treated her like a little fox who would never grow up.”

“Fox Baby had to come home on time every night, and wherever she went to play, she had to report to Fox Mommy. Fox Baby’s little friends all said her mommy managed her too strictly, asking her—you are already a big fox, how come you are still being managed by your mommy?”

—Don’t you want to leave your fox family and venture out on your own?

—Only by leaving your mommy can you become the Fox King. By your mommy’s side, you will always be a Fox Baby.

Yu Yan lowered her voice, voicing the role of the friends.

Fu Yunqing was amused by her and laughed softly, then asked in return, “Does Yanyan want a little more space?”

Yu Yan furrowed her brows, stopping her. “You can’t talk!”

Yu Yan was sitting up, while Fu Yunqing lay flat beside her. It all started because Yu Yan suddenly got the urge to tell Fu Yunqing a bedtime story. They had an itinerary to keep tomorrow, and Fu Yunqing had urged her to go to sleep quickly, but Yu Yan, fired up with enthusiasm, was as stubborn as a mule and insisted on telling the story.

Fu Yunqing, helpless, lay down and said fine, only to hear her come up with all this.

    Want more space?

    Didn’t she feel stifled?

    Was Yanyan hinting at her?

“The person listening to the story can’t talk, otherwise how will you fall asleep?” Yu Yan covered her eyes with her hand. Fu Yunqing’s eyelashes fluttered, and she closed her eyes once more.

Yu Yan continued in her own voice, “Fox Baby didn’t want to, not at all.”

“She couldn’t understand—were there actually people in the world who would want to break free from their own mommy?”

“Breaking free from the person closest to you in the world is just too unreasonable.”

“She couldn’t imagine how lonely and pitiful she would be after that. She couldn’t accept it; she would be eaten by a tiger!”

“Even… recently, she had been hiding in Mommy’s fox den every day, all because a while ago, a wolf kidnapped her.”

Fu Yunqing opened her eyes again.

“It was a female wolf. For years, her unrequited love for her Fox Mommy had gradually twisted her mind, and she wanted to use the daughter to force Fox Mommy to compromise. Fox Baby was tied up for two whole nights. Although the female wolf neither dared nor could bear to truly harm her, being bound hand and foot with her mouth covered still left Fox Baby with a significant psychological shadow. The night Fox Mommy found her, she cried in her arms breathlessly, not daring to leave Fox Mommy’s side even half a step…”

Yu Yan was so engrossed in the story that it was only when she looked down she realized Fu Yunqing had opened her eyes again.

“Why did you open your eyes again,” Yu Yan said with dissatisfaction. “Hurry up and close them~”

“How come you thought of being kidnapped?” Fu Yunqing asked, looking at her.

    “…”

Fu Yunqing knew Yu Yan too well and understood that her thoughts never came out of nowhere. She sat up and pulled her into her arms. “Tell me, why would you have that kind of thought.”

    “Because of Zhu Xie?”

Zhu Xie was a woman. Anyone could tell she was the prototype for the story Yu Yan had just told. She liked Fu Yunqing and had harbored an unrequited love for her for years, always staying by her side as a friend. She had come to confess to Fu Yunqing a while ago, and when Yu Yan found out about this, she had been unhappy for quite some time.

“Did she say anything to you?” Having nightmares about being kidnapped—Fu Yunqing was genuinely worried about this.

“No.” Yu Yan, afraid she would be misunderstood by Fu Yunqing, quickly said, “She didn’t come looking for me to say anything.”

“It’s just… I think she looks so dashing. Her brows and eyes are so sharp, exactly like a fierce female wolf. So, what I thought about during the day, I dreamed about at night…”

“Dreamed about being kidnapped by her?”

“Mhm. She tied me up and took me to a lighthouse by the sea, saying that if I didn’t behave, she would throw me into the ocean.” Feeling so wronged, she nestled into the crook of Fu Yunqing’s neck and rubbed against her.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?” She would obviously tell her about any grievance; Fu Yunqing did not want her reliance on her to slacken even a little bit.

“I forgot when I woke up. I only just remembered.”

Then she was not wronged at all.

Then she was just pretending to be wronged.

“Silly,” Fu Yunqing scolded her. “What do you think about all day long?”

    “Of course I think about… mmm… of course I think about…”

Yu Yan started acting up again. Fu Yunqing asked her if she was going to sleep or not. Yu Yan acted coy and bashful; she had originally wanted to coax Fu Yunqing to sleep, but in the end, they messed around until two in the morning before finally falling asleep.

The next morning, they still had to keep to their itinerary.

They were flying to Northern Europe for Christmas, and the itinerary was all arranged for the morning. Yu Yan, who had agreed to sleep early but ended up staying up late, was coaxed awake by Fu Yunqing. She was bleary-eyed and drowsy the whole way, resting her head on Fu Yunqing’s lap in the car, leaning against Fu Yunqing’s embrace in the lounge, not fully awake at all.

However, she was very good. Whatever Fu Yunqing told her to do, she did; no matter how sleepy, she did not make a fuss.

With Fu Yunqing by her side, she did not have to worry about any itinerary or anything else at all; she only needed to be held in Fu Yunqing’s arms.

In the words of their travel companion Fu Mingya, Yu Yan was like a three-year-old, as if she had not yet been weaned.

This remark earned a glare from Fu Yunqing, silencing her.

She was fiercely protective to the extreme.

When boarding the plane, Yu Yan briefly woke up. Seeing that she was still bleary-eyed, Fu Yunqing rubbed her head and coaxed her to hold on a little longer, saying she could sleep peacefully once they were on the plane.

She slept another stretch on the large bed in the plane’s master bedroom suite. When she woke up, the view outside the window was an endless expanse of clouds, and Fu Yunqing was sitting beside her, reading a book.

Seeing her awake, Fu Yunqing put down her book, moved to sit on the edge of the bed, and asked with a smile, “Is the little lazy pig finally awake?”
