    Paranoid

She Categorized Lu Yu as a Dangerous Outsider

Did something happen? Why was she in such a rush? Anyone who didn’t know better would think she’d been caught red-handed trying to escape, but she hadn’t even run yet! Yu Yan’s heart pounded against her ribs. She hurriedly walked to a quiet corner and called her back. “Hello? Fu-jiejie, I—”

The woman on the other end of the line cut her off breathlessly, “Where are you? I’ll come pick you up.”

    “I’m currently at…”

Yu Yan quickly sent her location to Fu Yunqing.

After sending the location, she hurriedly typed an explanation: 【I was just watching a movie with Lu Yu, so my phone was on silent. I got so engrossed in the film that I didn’t check my screen. What’s wrong? Is there an emergency?】

    Fu Yunqing didn’t reply.

    Was she driving?

A heavy sense of unease settled in Yu Yan’s chest.

“What’s wrong?” Lu Yu asked, seeing her expression.

Yu Yan shook her head. “Fu Yunqing suddenly called. I don’t know what’s going on, but she’s called me several times.”

She waited with Lu Yu in a café just outside the shopping mall. Fu Yunqing didn’t reply to any of her messages during this time. Yu Yan waited for about twenty minutes, her mind spinning with wild, anxious thoughts, until a Maybach pulled up by the curb. The door opened, and a woman stepped out, walking briskly toward them against the biting, cold wind.

Yu Yan recognized Fu Yunqing from a distance and stood up to walk toward her.

Fu Yunqing’s pace was incredibly fast. Her urgency proved contagious, and Yu Yan quickened her own steps.

Coming to a stop in front of her, Yu Yan looked up. “Fu…”

The moment Yu Yan parted her lips to speak, Fu Yunqing swept her into a tight embrace. Yu Yan froze, her head tilted back, her hands hovering uselessly in midair, completely at a loss.

Fu Yunqing was overwhelmed with emotion, holding her so tightly as if she were terrified of something.

Yu Yan hesitantly wrapped her arms around her in return, burying her face in the crook of her neck. Like animals, they leaned on each other, seeking mutual comfort.

Oh no. With the way she was acting, had she really found out about her escape plan?

Yu Yan felt her heart tremble with fear, yet she had to force herself to sound calm. “What’s wrong? Why are you in such a rush?”

“It’s nothing…” A hint of raw, undeniable vulnerability slipped through her voice. Fu Yunqing released her from the hug, but immediately took her hand in her own.

Realizing she had suffered a temporary lapse in composure, she forced herself back into her usual gentle demeanor. She softly rubbed Yu Yan’s hand and asked, “Are you cold?”

    Yu Yan shook her head.

Knowing her Fu-jiejie was coming, she had already wrapped her shoulders up snugly. Her fur coat was very warm, more than enough to handle Yuncheng’s seven- or eight-degree Celsius weather. Fu Yunqing, on the other hand, had hands as cold as ice blocks.

Looking closely, Yu Yan realized her face was pale too.

Her sense of impending doom grew even stronger.

“…Is something wrong? Is there an emergency? Or did something happen to Grandmother?”

Fu Yunqing shook her head. “No, nothing’s wrong.”

Yu Yan didn’t believe her. How could it be nothing?

“Are you two done shopping?” Before she could press further, Fu Yunqing changed the subject.

Filled with doubt, Yu Yan replied, “We just finished the movie. Once I got your call, I sat here waiting for you.”

“Are we going back now, or would you like to walk around a bit more?”

As if nothing had happened, Fu Yunqing had already reverted to her usual gentle, attentive self. Her frantic urgency and disarray from moments before had completely vanished.

But the sheer speed of this transition only made her more suspicious.

She was such a good actor.

“I don’t want to shop anymore…” Yu Yan had absolutely no mood left for it. She was terrified to her core.

    “Okay.”

Fu Yunqing noticed the young woman standing a few meters behind Yu Yan. After studying her briefly, she offered a polite, faint smile. “Hello. You must be Lu Yu.”

Lu Yu quickly plastered on a smile and stepped forward, putting on an enthusiastic front as she replied, “Hello, Teacher Fu! I’m Lu Yu, Yanyan’s friend.”

“Yanyan used to mention you to me quite often.” Fu Yunqing’s expression was soft and pleasant as she asked, “Are you heading back now too? I can drive you.”

When they got to the car, Lu Yu very tactfully climbed into the back seat. Yu Yan sat in the front passenger seat, full of apprehension. Her head was filled with all kinds of terrifying scenarios as she quietly observed Fu Yunqing.

“Then I’ll have to trouble you, Teacher Fu. My place is actually quite far, haha.” After buckling her seatbelt, Lu Yu politely thanked her again.

“It’s no trouble.” Fu Yunqing started the engine and glanced at the rearview mirror. “I should be the one thanking you for taking care of Yanyan for me some time ago.”

Lu Yu let out a couple of dry laughs, remaining neither submissive nor overbearing. “I’m her best friend, after all. We’ve known each other since we were kids, so taking care of her is only natural.”

Fu Yunqing curled her lips slightly but said nothing more.

    “…”

Both Fu Yunqing and Lu Yu were the types who disliked talking in front of outsiders. Yu Yan, who was normally the only one capable of livening up the mood, was currently behaving like a cat caught by the scruff of its neck. Frozen in her own horrifying imagination, she shrank back and didn’t dare utter a sound. As a result, the atmosphere inside the car became somewhat tense.

Once the car pulled up to the entrance of the residential compound, Lu Yu’s agonizing ordeal finally came to an end. She said her goodbyes, quickly unbuckled her seatbelt, and got out of the car. Just before she shut the door, however, she heard Fu Yunqing say to Yu Yan, “Yanyan, aren’t your ID card and other documents still at her place?”

    “Oh… right.”

“You might as well go up and retrieve them now. Didn’t you say you wanted to go on a trip? I’ve already had Assistant Liang arrange it. We’ll be needing them soon.”

    “Ah, oh…”

“I would’ve completely forgotten if you hadn’t mentioned it.”

    Yu Yan panicked inwardly.

Her identification documents were indeed still kept at Lu Yu’s place. But she was planning to run away with Lu Yu in the near future; she had absolutely no intention of going on any trip with Fu Yunqing.

She hadn’t expected Fu Yunqing to take her words so seriously that she was already making arrangements.

    She was doomed.

Should she go up and get them? If she took her documents back now…

Seeing her hesitate, Fu Yunqing urged, “Go on and get them. Do you want me to come up with you?”

Yu Yan snapped out of her daze. She looked up and met her eyes, only to see—

Yu Yan got out of the car and walked upstairs with Lu Yu.

They climbed three flights of stairs and stopped in front of the door. The broken corridor light had been repaired recently, but after just a few days of Yu Yan being away, it had gone out again. Lu Yu looked down, rummaging through her bag for her keys, while Yu Yan stared at the pitch-black floor, her mind riddled with intense anxiety and dread.

Fu Yunqing’s behavior was truly far too abnormal.

Lu Yu unlocked the door in the dark. Yu Yan followed closely on her heels as they stepped inside. “Lu Yu, do you think… she really found out about my plan to escape?”

“Otherwise, why would she be in such a frantic rush? I only missed her messages for two hours, and she panicked like that.”

Lu Yu hung her keys on the wall. “Did she look at your phone?”

Yu Yan racked her brain. “I don’t know. I haven’t seen her look at it.”

“Did you sleep with her last night?”

“Well, yes… we slept together last night.” Thinking back to the previous night, Yu Yan’s cheeks warmed up slightly.

Well, there you go. They had slept together again.

They were supposed to be planning an escape, yet they were sleeping in the same bed? Had they kissed too? Were they still going to run even after kissing?

Lu Yu wasn’t surprised in the slightest; Yu Yan was just like that—she said one thing and did another.

Just like when she was a kid, she would complain to Lu Yu, ‘She ignored me today, I’m never speaking to her again!’ while secretly buying milk tea and sending confession texts to her crush behind Lu Yu’s back.

Lu Yu had never believed a word of it.

“We don’t even know if she knows your passcode.”

    That was true.

Yu Yan’s passcode was her name plus her phone number’s last digits, 117788—who knew if Fu Yunqing actually knew it?

But Fu Yunqing had been completely normal this morning. She had left her a bank card with money to spend, chatted with her, and even helped bridge the gap with Grandmother so they could reconcile. If she had discovered her plan to run last night, wouldn’t she have flown into a rage this morning?

Therefore, she concluded that Fu Yunqing’s strange behavior had absolutely nothing to do with her escape plan.

Her escape plan was still tightly under wraps.

Phew, she was just scaring herself.

Yu Yan sighed in relief for now.

All her personal documents were kept in the drawer of her bedroom nightstand. Her ID card, bank cards, driver’s license, and passport had all been gathered into a transparent file bag. But as Yu Yan sifted through them, she was puzzled. Where’s the divorce certificate? Where did it go?

Yu Yan had seen their marriage certificate before, but she had never laid eyes on their divorce certificate. To be honest, she was quite curious about what it looked like. Yet no matter how much she turned the drawers inside out, she couldn’t find the divorce certificate anywhere.

“Lu Yu, do you know where my divorce certificate is?”

    “No idea,” Lu Yu said.

    Forget it.

Yu Yan reasoned that she might have been too heartbroken after the divorce. Perhaps, to keep it out of sight and out of mind, she had torn the certificate to shreds and thrown it into the Yun River.

In that case, there was nothing she could do.

If she couldn’t find it, she couldn’t find it.

Yu Yan tidied the messy drawer back up, picked up the transparent file bag containing her documents, and waved a sweet goodbye to Lu Yu.

Lu Yu told her to be careful on her way. She stood in place and watched her go until the poorly soundproofed wooden door clicked shut. Soon, the sound of Yu Yan’s light, cheerful footsteps echoing down the stairwell faded into the distance.

Well, look at that. Now that she knew she hadn’t been exposed, she was happy again.

From the time Yu Yan got married to when she divorced, Lu Yu hadn’t been in Yuncheng. Today was the first time she had ever met Fu Yunqing in person.

Her ex-wife’s looks were indeed exactly the type to leave Yu Yan utterly spellbound. She had a wonderful temperament and a powerful aura. Moreover, her way of handling people and situations was far more mature and appropriate than Yu Yan’s, and she was far more calculating.

She made people clearly feel a sense of distance from her—at least, Lu Yu felt it.

Lu Yu was a highly sensitive person. Unlike the carefree and outspoken Yu Yan, she could more keenly perceive things that lay hidden beneath the surface.

For instance, while Fu Yunqing appeared gentle, she was actually very distant. From her eyes, Lu Yu had also felt her wariness and some warning hints.

She had categorized Lu Yu as a dangerous outsider.

The biting wind cut to the bone. The residential compound was quiet, without a single soul out for a stroll.

Yu Yan walked downstairs, clutching the file bag. From a distance, she spotted Fu Yunqing waiting for her in front of the car.

Clad in a long black trench coat, she stood straight and still in the lonely night. Though she was bathed in the dim, yellow glow of a streetlamp, she exuded a profound, solitary isolation that seemed to merge with the darkness. The sight tugged at Yu Yan’s heartstrings, prompting her to quicken her pace.

The temperature was dropping as the night wore on, making the air feel several degrees colder than before. She was wearing such thin clothes. Why did she come out here to freeze in the cold wind? Couldn’t she have just waited in the car?

Yu Yan practically jogged over. Taking those last few steps, she came to a halt right in front of her.

Fu Yunqing’s features grew clear before her eyes. She stared at Yu Yan in silence.

“Did you get all your things?” Fu Yunqing finally asked after a long pause.

Yu Yan pressed her lips together and mumbled, “Yes, got them all.”

“Let’s get in the car then.”

The vehicle made a U-turn at the intersection and smoothly headed in a different direction. This particular road was very quiet with little traffic, making the dead silence inside the car feel even more pronounced.

Yu Yan repeatedly stole glances at Fu Yunqing.

She wanted to understand what on earth was wrong with Fu Yunqing today.

After hesitating for a long while, she finally spoke up. “Where is Dan Lin? Did she go home?”

    “Yes, she went back.”

“Then…” Yu Yan asked again, “Did something happen? Why were you in such a rush to find me?”

Yu Yan watched her, waiting for an answer. But Fu Yunqing remained silent, seemingly too focused on driving to have heard her, giving no response.

What in the world was going on?

Calling so many times and sending so many texts without ever explaining what was wrong… Could it be that Fu Yunqing simply couldn’t stand her not replying? Did failing to respond for even a short while drive her to such desperate anxiety?

They say people who resort to text-bombing when you don’t reply for a short while are usually highly controlling and have a paranoid personality.

Did Fu Yunqing have a paranoid personality?

So… she was a highly controlling, paranoid S1.

    Oh my god…

Once she drove the car into the underground garage, a dead silence surrounded them, with not another soul in sight. Fu Yunqing unbuckled her seatbelt and stepped out of the vehicle, and Yu Yan quickly followed suit. While Yu Yan was still racking her brain trying to figure out how to talk to her, Fu Yunqing walked to the back, then opened the rear door, and called out, “Yanyan.”

    “Could you get inside?”

    Yu Yan was slightly dazed.

They were already downstairs at their apartment building. What was the point of getting into the back seat now?

Even though she had phrased it as a gentle request, Yu Yan could hear an underlying tone that brooked no argument. All kinds of unspeakable scenarios began to flash through her mind.

Did she actually keep a leather whip in the car too?

Yu Yan’s ears flushed red. She could neither reject her nor bring herself to agree. She cast a pleading look at her, but finding no trace of softening in Fu Yunqing’s eyes, she could only lower her head. Under her intense gaze, she obediently crawled into the car.

Fu Yunqing climbed in right after her and reached out to pull the door shut.
