    Guarding Food

    Unable to Endure

“When do you plan on remarrying?”

Xu Man asked the question naturally. Of course, it was not some taboo subject, but still…

Yu Yan felt a surge of panic. She instinctively looked at Fu Yunqing, who noticed her distress. Reaching up to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear, Fu Yunqing looked into her eyes and said softly, “We’ve only just reunited, so we haven’t started talking about that yet. I’ll discuss it properly with Yanyan once we get home.”

    It was a perfect answer.

And it was indeed the truth.

Though Yu Yan had no intention of remarrying her, nor was she anywhere near ready for it.

According to her plan, Fu Yunqing would soon grow tired of her anyway. Why would they remarry?

“Mm~” Xu Man agreed completely, nodding. “That sort of thing really does require a proper talk. My partner and I discussed marriage for a solid two or three months before deciding.”

“I need to catch a flight, so I’ll be off now.” Xu Man declined their offer to walk her out. She waved a breezy farewell and said to Yu Yan, “See you at my wedding~ I’ll introduce my partner to you then and tell you our story in full detail.”

Yu Yan watched her walk away, feeling a trace of bittersweet longing under the infectious warmth of Xu Man’s happiness.

Meanwhile, Fu Yunqing’s gaze had remained fixed on her from beginning to end, observing every micro-expression of her emotions.

“Have you eaten lunch yet?” After a long moment, she softly called her back.

Yu Yan snapped out of her daze and collected herself, turning to her with a bright smile. “Not yet. I came here specifically so we could eat together, of course.”

“Alright. What would you like to eat?”

The weather was cold today. Fu Yunqing wore a cream-colored turtleneck sweater dress that complemented the antique shop beautifully, draped with a matching cashmere shawl coat. She looked incredibly warm and gentle. For such a mature, cool jie-styled woman to mimic Yu Yan by speaking in such a sweet tone—Yu Yan felt as if she were about to lose her title as the sweeter of the two.

Seeing her lack of response, Fu Yunqing hummed. “Hmm? Why the silence?”

She really was losing to her in sweetness!

Yu Yan stared at her unblinkingly for a moment, wondering to herself: How can she be so good at acting cute and flirting?

It felt as though she knew how to do everything. Yu Yan inexplicably felt a touch of shyness. To prevent the other woman from seeing the blush creeping up her cheeks, she lowered her head, leaned in clingily, and wrapped her arms around her. “Hug first~”

The moment their bodies met, Fu Yunqing embraced her back. Strong arms looped around her waist as she gently nuzzled her cheek against Yu Yan’s temple, as if savoring every second of the moment.

Evidently, Yu Yan was not the only one who had wanted a hug first.

The woman asked with a smile, “Did you miss me?”

Without a second thought, Yu Yan hummed an assent. Fu Yunqing’s voice dropped even lower, like a shared secret. “I’ve been thinking about you too. All morning.”

    All morning?

Fu Yunqing had actually just blurted it out like that.

“I woke you when I left this morning. You scrambled out of bed half-asleep to hug me, whimpering and whining like a little kitten. You were so adorable, I hated to leave you.”

    “…”

To think Fu Yunqing could say such sweet nothings…

Yu Yan was incredibly thin-skinned and easily flustered by sweet talk. Hearing this, she couldn’t help but bury her face in the crook of the woman’s neck. Fu Yunqing, completely tickle-proof and unbothered by her squirming, pressed her advantage:

“I wanted so badly to stay home and sleep in with you. I wanted you to see me the very moment you opened your eyes. But today is Xu Man’s last day in the country, and we had things to discuss.”

“When I saw your message saying you missed me so much, I felt a twinge of regret for not staying back with you.”

“I’m so happy you came to find me. It turns out you missed me just as much as I missed you.” Her words were soft and slow, a trace of amusement dancing at the end of her sentence.

    “…”

Yu Yan withdrew from her embrace. With flushed cheeks, she checked to make sure they were alone, then tilted her head up and kissed her on the cheek.

Since they were in public and not at home, Yu Yan only gave her a light peck. Fu Yunqing blinked, the corners of her lips curving upward. “Thank you~”

How strange to say “thank you” for a kiss. Yet there was no distance in the words; coming from Fu Yunqing, it was pure flirtation.

The bad woman was indeed a master of her craft—skilled in every conceivable way, capable of making one helplessly want to kiss her.

Whether Fu Yunqing had read her desire or simply shared the exact same thought, she took Yu Yan’s hand and led her into an office.

“Come in,” Fu Yunqing said in an entirely casual tone. She pulled Yu Yan inside, closed the door, and locked it.

Despite her gentle voice, her turn of the lock was swift and decisive. Her hands were beautiful—long, pale, and slender, with prominent knuckles that stood out when she exerted force. Yu Yan found it inexplicably erotic.

That careless gesture possessed an irresistible contrast against her gentle image, a duality that made women weak at the knees.

Fu Yunqing sat in a black leather office chair in her white dress, while Yu Yan, following her lead, settled onto her lap. Yu Yan wrapped her arms around her neck and looked down into her eyes. A faint smile flickered in Fu Yunqing’s gaze as they teased each other. Within moments, Yu Yan lost all self-control, leaning down to claim their first kiss of the day.

Fu Yunqing tasted the mouthwash she had used not long ago. “Tangerine-flavored.”

“Don’t say it…” Yu Yan would never tell her that she had nearly layered the tangerine flavor with pear flavor, attempting to recreate the taste of Tangerine Pear Tea to see if she could get the older woman tired of it sooner.

However, she had been too afraid of mixing some weird taste. After all, she was about to kiss the woman, and she didn’t want to leave a bad impression.

Kissing was addictive, especially in such an exciting, novel setting. Yu Yan clung to her, far bolder and hungrier than she had been when she first learned how to kiss. She blushed furiously, her lips swollen and damp by the time they parted, her breath coming in hot, rapid pants.

Fu Yunqing’s lips were in no better state, yet the woman maintained her poised composure. She merely pressed her lips together, pulled a tissue from the desk, and gently cupped Yu Yan’s chin with one hand to meticulously wipe the corners of her mouth.

The tissue, now dampened with a glistening sheen, was crumpled and tossed into the nearby wastebasket.

Fu Yunqing was not ready to let her down just yet. Keeping her cradled in her arms, she began to discuss where they should go for lunch.

Yu Yan couldn’t help but reflect on how clingy she had been lately. Yet Fu Yunqing showed absolutely no signs of tiring of her, remaining just as patient and passionate as ever. They had even made love the previous night. Given Fu Yunqing’s deep sense of responsibility, there was no way she would grow tired of her and dump her anytime soon.

Faced with such a devoted woman, Yu Yan couldn’t tell if she was troubled or filled with sweet bliss.

She truly couldn’t bear to break her heart.

Yet she also couldn’t bear to let Director An down.

What on earth was she supposed to do? Sob…

While Yu Yan’s mind was tangled in knots, Fu Yunqing suddenly asked, “What are you thinking about?”

The woman tilted her head down, brushing her lips against Yu Yan’s temple in an incredibly intimate gesture.

“Nothing…” Yu Yan quickly denied it, terrified that Fu Yunqing would notice something amiss, and forced herself to focus on deciding what to eat for lunch.

But avoidance solved nothing. That evening, Teacher An sent her another message.

At that moment, she was sitting with Fu Yunqing on a yacht, admiring the night view of Yuncheng. Though it was damp and cold by the river, the chill did nothing to dim the city’s opulent, dazzling skyline. Wrapped in a thick winter coat, Yu Yan was perfectly shielded from the icy wind, feeling relaxed and at ease.

Sitting across from Fu Yunqing as they enjoyed their dinner, she had been gossiping1 about how Fu Yunqing and Xu Man had met, and whether Fu Yunqing knew who Xu Man’s girlfriend was.

As luck would have it, An Qiu’s message arrived right then: 【Yanyan, have you made up your mind?】

Having received no reply to her midday message, she had waited until evening to ask again. An Qiu had already granted her plenty of time to think.

But Yu Yan still had no idea how to reply.

Anxiety weighed heavily on her. As a result, when Fu Yunqing explained that she and Xu Man had been university classmates and that Xu Man’s girlfriend was also an alumna—a xuejie2 two years ahead of them—Yu Yan barely registered a word.

Several times, she only offered absentminded, delayed murmurs in response. Realizing she was being rude, she quickly apologized. Fu Yunqing, naturally, was forgiving of her distraction.

However, there were certain things she simply could not tolerate.

It was very late by the time they returned home.

After going upstairs for a quick wash, it was Fu Yunqing’s turn to use the bathroom. Yu Yan sat alone by the French windows, deep in thought. Finally, she sent her reply to An Qiu’s WeChat: 【I’m sorry, Teacher An. For various reasons, I won’t be able to do the film. Please find someone else. I’m truly sorry for wasting your time.】【Bowing apology.jpg】

An Qiu: 【Is it because of your ex-wife?】

She must have noticed something that night to ask such a direct question. Unwilling to manufacture more excuses, Yu Yan admitted it: 【Yes】

An Qiu: 【You reunited with her?】

An Qiu: 【Did she forbid you from acting?】

Yu Yan knew that even if she were to ask Fu Yunqing now, her answer would surely be a “no.” But she also knew that if Fu Yunqing actually agreed to let her go, spending every single day with Director An might lead her to uncontrollably fall for someone else. If that happened, the situation would turn into an absolute mess.

Yu Yan: 【No, it’s for my own reasons.】

She waited for a while, but An Qiu didn’t send another message.

Assuming the other woman was simply too disappointed to bother replying, Yu Yan spaced out for a moment. When her phone buzzed with a low battery notification, she set it on the wireless charger and started playing with the cat.

She felt like Honey had put on some weight; she could barely lift the feline with both hands anymore. It had to be because jiejie was back and their family was reunited, putting the cat in such a good mood that she polished off an extra half-bowl of cat food at every meal.

Fu Yunqing stepped out of the bathroom, drying her long, dripping wet hair with a towel. Looking up, she saw Yu Yan sitting on the sofa, lost in thought, with the large black cat lying in her lap.

    “Yanyan,” Fu Yunqing called out.

Yu Yan looked up, shifting the purring cat off her lap. She stood up and walked over, her eyes bright as she gazed at her. “Are you done washing up?”

“Yes.” Fu Yunqing replied softly, “I’m a bit tired. Could you help me blow-dry my hair?”

“Okay!” Yu Yan agreed without a second thought.

Fu Yunqing seated herself at the vanity. On this late, freezing winter night, she wore a very short nightdress with a hemline that barely covered the tops of her thighs. She crossed her legs lazily. Fortunately, the apartment was well-heated, so she didn’t feel the slightest bit cold.

Yu Yan stood behind her with the hair dryer, looking down at her. Her thick, dark hair cascaded over her shoulders, framing the pale skin of her collarbones and shoulders that peeked through the strands.

Her skin is always so perfect, whether on her face or her body, Yu Yan thought.

Her mind drifted off under the steady hum of the hair dryer. Time flew by. Before she knew it, Fu Yunqing signaled for her to stop. Her once damp, heavy hair was now fluffy and light, releasing a rich, sweet fragrance. It was the exact same scent that clung to her neck.

Before she could fully finish, Fu Yunqing suddenly stood up from the chair. She turned around, took the hair dryer from Yu Yan’s hand, and set it carelessly on the wooden tabletop.

Yu Yan’s downward gaze was instantly forced upward. She stared up at her with wide, expectant eyes, wondering why she had suddenly been in such a rush to stand.

Fu Yunqing reached out to cup her face. Knowing what was coming next, Yu Yan compliantly tilted her chin up to meet her in a deeply wet, lingering kiss.

They parted, their gazes locking, eyes heavy with desire. Another kiss followed almost immediately. Yu Yan easily lost herself whenever they kissed, but Fu Yunqing did not close her eyes completely, drinking in every detail of her reaction.

For some reason, Yu Yan felt a subtle hint of dominance in Fu-jiejie tonight, as though the older woman were slightly displeased with her. One of her hands clamped firmly around Yu Yan’s jaw, forcing her to keep her head tilted back as she kissed her with deep, lingering passion.

“You’ve been very good today too.”

As Yu Yan clung to her waist, gasping for breath against her shoulder, Fu Yunqing murmured into her ear, “How is it that you haven’t asked for your reward?”

    Reward…

Indeed, she had been very good today. She had replied to jiejie’s messages promptly, actively sought her out, and clung to her side, holding her hand almost every second since they met…

Of course she deserved a reward today.

It was only because of her contact with Director An, and her own guilty conscience over her thoughts and slight wavering about potentially falling for Director An, that she had forgotten she could ask Fu Yunqing for a reward.

Yet now that Fu Yunqing had brought it up herself, she was like a little fish caught on a hook. Her mind instantly flooded with thoughts of intimacy, as if it were her primal nature, a yearning wired into her very bones.

Utterly incapable of resisting, she whimpered softly, “I want it.”

And so, Fu Yunqing leaned back against the headboard as she always did, while Yu Yan straddled her lap, draped over her chest.

The straps of her gown were slid down her shoulders, pooling at her arms, and the bodice of her nightdress was pulled down to her ribs, completely exposing her snow-white chest. Yu Yan buried her face there, her hands clutching possessively in a manner that looked very much like guarding her food3.

With closed eyes, she suckled with frantic devotion, so absorbed that it was as if she could actually draw something out of them. She loved this, cherished the feeling so deeply. The woman’s hands cradled her head, holding her close like a mother cradling her child. It brought her an immense sense of peace and security, sparking a desperate urge to hide away right here forever.

Drowned in bliss, she vaguely heard the woman above whispering her childhood nickname.

    “Yanyan…”

She loosened her lips slightly, only to dismiss it as an illusion. Her lips brushed against the cherry-red peak as she caught her breath for a brief moment before sealing her mouth over it once more, shutting her eyes.

“Yanyan…” Fu Yunqing’s trembling voice floated down again. She gently pinched her earlobe, as if telling her not to continue.

Yu Yan finally registered that something was different.

Usually, though Yu Yan could feel her body tensing, the older woman remained largely silent. But tonight was different. Her breathing was heavier, her body was hotter, and faint, delicate gasps escaped her throat from time to time.

Yu Yan looked up, meeting a pair of damp, reddened eyes.

Her brow was furrowed as she panted hot breaths. A thin sheen of perspiration covered her neck, glistening with moisture, and she stared down with a thoroughly flushed face.
