Punishment for Failing to Quit Smoking

Yu Yan had always been the type to start strong and fizzle out—never finishing what she began, forever changing her mind. She knew full well that her self-discipline was terrible, so when she first said she’d quit smoking, she didn’t actually have much confidence in herself. But in that state at the time, she wouldn’t have dared to say a single word of refusal to Fu Yunqing.

However, under Fu Yunqing’s watchful pressure and coaxing guidance, she had managed to stick with it for over a month now. Despite the grueling process and several bouts of craving so intense they made her miserable, it didn’t stop her from feeling smugly proud, convinced she’d already quit successfully, dropping comments like “I thought it was supposed to be hard” from time to time.

—All of which was predicated on Fu Yunqing being right there beside her.

These past few days, Fu Yunqing had been out of town on a business trip. Being home alone with no one watching or managing her, she did feel a bit more relaxed—but at the same time, the loneliness was unbearable, her whole body out of sorts. Although they video-called every evening, considering Fu Yunqing had to work the next day, they only talked for a little while each night. More precisely, they only chatted for a little while—Fu-jiejie wouldn’t let her hang up, keeping the video on to supervise her early bedtime.

But today was an exception. Fu Yunqing had a business dinner to attend and wouldn’t be back at her hotel until very late, so they couldn’t video chat. Yu Yan would be alone for the evening.

She curled up on the blanket by the floor-to-ceiling window, cradling the cat in her arms, scrolling idly through their scattered chat messages from today, feeling especially empty inside.

Today was the third day without Fu Yunqing.

    She missed her so much.

She missed her when she woke up, missed her when she ate, missed her when she played mahjong, missed her when she went out to have fun—and after a full day of classes, a day that should have felt especially fulfilling, she missed her even more.

The idle, aimless Young Miss—the greatest hardship she’d ever endured in her life was probably that one year she ran away from home. Now that Mommy had brought her back to her side, of course she was even clingier than before, brimming with an overwhelming urge to share everything with Mommy, wanting to curl up in her arms and tell her about every little thing.

A month ago, she had made a very major decision—to take the graduate entrance exam for the Acting Department at Yuncheng Drama Academy.

At first, her ambitions hadn’t stretched as far as the Yuncheng Drama Academy’s Acting Department. She’d simply figured she was still young and her family was wealthy—she should enjoy herself for a few more years. But the places that sounded impressive and would let her “play” were all abroad. She absolutely refused to go overseas. She was a Mommy’s girl—she couldn’t leave home, couldn’t leave Mommy, and never would be able to.

So she reconsidered—since she’d decided to continue her studies, why not put in a little effort? She was thoroughly mediocre at painting, never going to become some great artist. But great artists didn’t just mean painters. An Qiu said she had acting talent—why shouldn’t Yu Yan believe she had talent? How could she waste it? From the moment the thought surfaced to the moment she made her decision, only three hours had passed. She had personally put an end to her lazy, idle slacker life.

Fu Yunqing found tutors for her, and she started taking classes, reading, and studying every day.

She discovered that studying acting was far more exhausting than painting. Painting at least let you sit still—acting classes had her sitting, standing, and lying down, with a whole series of physical movements and vocal exercises. Sometimes her throat burned from all the speaking. But what made her feel deeply gratified and proud was that her teachers also said she had talent.

Her life was just that effortless. Even if she didn’t pass the exam in the end, it wouldn’t matter. As long as she wanted to act, countless scripts would be delivered to her doorstep for her to choose from—whether because of Fu Yunqing or because of herself.

She would have everything. Just as she’d believed during that period of amnesia—as long as she was willing, as long as she wanted it, she would have it all.

She simply had that much confidence and self-awareness about her own charm.

In the face of such formidable charm, a few little flaws became so trivial—lazy and casual, terrible self-discipline, and wanting to smoke again.

—She actually wanted to smoke again.

It must be because she was so empty inside. The moment Fu Yunqing left, the thought that she could smoke again had surfaced out of nowhere. Her rational mind told her absolutely not, but the thought persisted, impossible to shake, for days now. Tonight was especially agonizing—she was not only exhausted but also lonely, and the craving to smoke reached its peak, practically tearing her apart inside.

Oh no, what was she supposed to do?

She ate candy, sucked on a pacifier—none of it helped much.

This made her increasingly anxious. She really didn’t like this feeling. She tried to fall asleep, but ended up tossing in bed for dozens of minutes. Unable to sleep at all, frantic with restlessness, she opened her eyes, glanced at the surveillance camera in the room, and ran downstairs to the secondary bedroom.

Just this once—just this once, and that was it. Fu Yunqing would never know, and she’d never smoke again. Yu Yan leaned against the window and lit one up, thoroughly content. But the moment the satisfaction faded, guilt swallowed her whole. She hastily stubbed out the cigarette, went back to her room to shower, even sprayed perfume—a transparent attempt to cover her tracks—then sent Fu Yunqing a goodnight message, waiting anxiously for a while until Fu Yunqing replied, and only then could she fall asleep with peace of mind.

How did this ever get out?

How on earth did Fu Yunqing find out? Yu Yan couldn’t figure it out no matter how hard she tried.

This day, she came home from class to find that Fu Yunqing had already returned. The moment she walked in, she saw her sitting on the sofa working. Yu Yan froze for a moment, then her lips curved up high as she trotted over. Fu Yunqing turned her head to look at her.

Her eyes were bright with surprise and warmth, and she was being very well-behaved—consciously kneeling beside her legs, hands resting on her knees, looking up and softly calling out, “Mommy.” Then she waited for Mommy to move the laptop from her lap so she could sit on it.

    But Fu Yunqing didn’t.

Fu Yunqing looked down at her calmly, without much of the joy or smiles that should come with a small reunion.

Yu Yan’s smile faded somewhat, and she blinked, a bad premonition stirring in her heart.

“Did you smoke?” Fu Yunqing asked, her lips parting.

    Yu Yan froze.

Her eyes widened, her mind racing to figure out which step had gone wrong. She even twitched her nose, trying to smell whether she still carried the scent on her body. It had clearly been two days ago.

    “I…” she opened her mouth.

“Are you going to lie to me?” Fu Yunqing cut her off.

    Yu Yan didn’t dare.

    She didn’t dare—and couldn’t—lie to Fu Yunqing.

She swallowed hard, blinking nervously, gripping Fu Yunqing’s knees as she admitted her fault: “…I admit it, I admit it. I’m sorry, I was wrong.”

Fu Yunqing asked her, “Why did you smoke again?”

“It’s just—it’s just the craving hit suddenly, and I couldn’t resist…” she said guiltily.

    “The craving hit?”

Fu Yunqing frowned and echoed the words, then said nothing more, her expression full of helplessness. Yu Yan’s heart panicked—she knew what they had agreed upon before, that whenever she encountered a problem or difficulty, she should come to Fu Yunqing so they could solve it together. If she wanted to smoke, she could have simply told her. Even if Fu Yunqing wasn’t right beside her, they could chat, talk things through, and Fu Yunqing could coax her until the craving was quickly suppressed.

Even if she had been busy at the time, as long as it concerned her, she would have put aside whatever she was doing to attend to her. Yu Yan knew this perfectly well—Fu Yunqing valued her above everything else.

Not going to her to confide—didn’t that mean she hadn’t truly wanted to resist the craving? That her resolve to quit wasn’t that firm at all?

Fu Yunqing must have been thinking exactly this.

Yu Yan suddenly realized the gravity of the situation.

“I was wrong, I was wrong… Just this once, I’ll never smoke again, I won’t even think about it, really…” Yu Yan didn’t dare offer excuses about being afraid of disturbing her, and just kept apologizing over and over. Fu Yunqing remained unmoved, as though using silence to tell her that she was deeply disappointed.

Yu Yan couldn’t bear it when she treated her like this. After a moment of locked eyes, Yu Yan whimpered, “Wait,” and scrambled upstairs.

She rummaged through drawers, one hand grabbing the whip, the other the belt—the two Fu Yunqing used most often. Her favorite collar she carried in her mouth, rushing back downstairs at top speed, crouching back down at Fu Yunqing’s feet. She set down the whip and belt, spat out the collar she’d been holding in her mouth, nudged it toward Fu Yunqing’s hand with her face, and called out softly, “Mommy…”

She rested her chin on Fu Yunqing’s knees, looking up with eyes full of pleading and begging. “Punish me, please. I’ll never dare do it again, really~ I really know I was wrong.”

“You can punish me however you want, Mommy…” Yu Yan kept carefully nudging the collar toward her hand, but Fu Yunqing refused to take it. Yu Yan grew frantic—so anxious that the crisp jingling of the bell couldn’t be hidden—but Fu Yunqing still wouldn’t accept it, wouldn’t put the collar around her neck.

Yu Yan frowned and reached for her hand. “Master…”

Fu Yunqing ignored her. She suddenly stood up and walked upstairs. Yu Yan didn’t understand why, following anxiously behind, trying to take her arm, but Fu Yunqing pulled her hand away.

She turned her head to look at her and said tiredly, “Yanyan, I’m a little disappointed in you.”

Yu Yan froze, her heart quailing.

    Disappointment…

Fu Yunqing was disappointed in her…

Fu Yunqing had actually said she was disappointed in her…

“I…” That word had never been uttered before—far too devastating for Yu Yan. Her mind went somewhat blank, her eyes already rimmed with wet redness, her hands trembling with urgency. For a moment she had no idea what to do, and could only follow her helplessly, blindly. Fu Yunqing entered a secondary bedroom and, without waiting for her to come in, pushed the door shut behind her.

Yu Yan let out a cry and scrambled to press the door handle, pushing it hard several times, but it wouldn’t open—it was locked…

    Locked.

Yu Yan stood frozen in place.

    What was she doing?

Locking her out—what was that supposed to mean? Was Fu Yunqing going to give her the silent treatment?

    Fu Yunqing was actually…

Fu Yunqing was actually giving her the silent treatment.
