    Dental Checkup

    “Don’t move.”

Would Fu Yunqing chase after her?

Setting down the clingy cat, Yu Yan did not immediately head into the bathroom to shower. Instead, she strained her ears, listening for any movement outside the door.

But the soundproofing was apparently a bit too good; she never heard any footsteps, nor did she know if Fu Yunqing had come up to the second floor.

Yu Yan knew she must have provoked Fu Yunqing.

When she had said those words, Yu Yan had clearly sensed the shift in her. Especially after that single word—“Mommy”—slipped out, she had felt the desire burning in her gaze, identical to the look in her eyes that morning when she had gripped the back of her neck.

What a disaster she had made.

Her petty desire for revenge was simply too strong. Fu Yunqing had only teased her a little, yet she could not stomach it? She just had to retaliate.

Despite her seemingly seamless performance, Master Yu was actually still a bit nervous. Fearing that Fu Yunqing might chase after her, she quickly ducked into the bathroom.

She lingered in the bathroom for a long time, only stepping out with her heart in her throat. Looking toward the door, she found it dead silent. Fu Yunqing had not come.

There were no messages from her on her phone either.

It seemed Fu Yunqing still possessed plenty of courtesy and restraint, refraining from barging straight in to demand a kiss.

Yu Yan breathed a temporary sigh of relief.

Curled up to one side, the little cat grew dissatisfied with her constant focus on the phone. With a soft meow, she burrowed into her embrace, her fluffy, adorable head completely occupying the human’s field of vision. Yu Yan realized that cats were truly proud yet manipulative creatures, purring and kneading in front of humans. Busy as she was pondering serious matters, Yu Yan simply did not have the heart to ignore her. She set her phone aside, scooped the cat into her arms, and began huffing1 and kissing her.

Once they finished playing, Honey nestled in her lap. Yu Yan stroked her fur with idle, rhythmic sweeps. Gradually, a heavy drowsiness washed over her. She let out a yawn, her sleepiness growing stronger by the moment.

Yu Yan did not even know how she had fallen asleep. In the morning, while hovering in that hazy state between slumber and waking, she faintly heard a cat’s meow and the sound of a door opening. Opening her bleary eyes, she looked up to see Fu Yunqing standing in the doorway, clad in a bathrobe, while Honey clawed at her thigh.

While Yu Yan was still dazed, Fu Yunqing saw that she was awake, released the doorknob, and walked toward her.

Yu Yan sat up, her eyes wide as she dumbly watched her approach. Recalling the events of the previous night, she instantly went on high alert.

It was already morning… She had actually fallen asleep just like that.

What was Fu Yunqing doing in her room?

Fu Yunqing walked over to her bedside. She also seemed to have just woken up. She wore a light pink V-neck bathrobe, her smooth, waist-length hair cascading over her shoulders and back, carrying the warm, rich fragrance of someone who had just emerged from under the covers.

She seemed to be in an exceptionally good mood today. Her eyes were curved in a gentle, faint arc, and a subtle smile tugged at the corners of her lips. Her straight, dark hair fell softly around her, revealing her clean, gentle face, which possessed a translucent quality in the morning light—appearing even lighter than the clouds drifting outside the window.

    Yu Yan stared, completely dazed.

Sitting at the edge of the bed, Fu Yunqing reached out to caress Yu Yan’s cheek. “Are you awake?”

Yu Yan nodded dumbly. Captivated by the effortless beauty of the woman before her in the early morning light, she could not help but call out, “Jiejie.”

Fu Yunqing raised her eyebrows. “Hmm?”

What was this? Hadn’t she run away last night? Yet the moment she woke up, she was calling her jiejie again?

    Yu Yan flushed, remaining silent.

Fu Yunqing explained her presence: “I was planning to let Honey out for breakfast. Did I wake you?”

“Mm-mm.” Clutching the blanket, Yu Yan shook her head.

“Do you want to sleep a bit longer?”

    “No…”

“Then let’s get up for breakfast?”

    “…”

Yu Yan did not reply. She merely stared at her with wide, pleading eyes, unclear of what she wanted to convey. Fu Yunqing was entirely accustomed to this behavior. Smiling, she reached out to smooth Yu Yan’s messy, bedhead hair. “Would you like some noodles? Shall I make them for you? Or would you prefer something else?”

Yu Yan felt that Fu-jiejie was truly magnanimous. Not only did she refrain from holding last night’s shameless teasing against her, but she was also being incredibly gentle, even offering to cook noodles for her herself.

How could someone as indulgent as Fu-jiejie exist in this world? It must have been Yu Yan’s own delusion to ever think of her as a scheming, dangerous, and venomous woman.

She simply could not decline such a warm invitation from a beautiful woman. “I want some.”

“Up you get, then.” Fu Yunqing patted her through the blanket, her touch featherlight and deeply affectionate.

But Yu Yan had not had her fill of lazing in bed. She squirmed and huddled beneath the covers, exposing only her eyes. Having lived with her for two years, Fu Yunqing naturally understood her temperament perfectly; she knew Yu Yan wanted her to play along.

Fu Yunqing was already a patient woman by nature, let alone when dealing with Yu Yan, and let alone when Yu Yan was actively seeking closeness.

Thus, she sat by the bedside, coaxing her for a long while.

“Honey is already back. Hurry and get up, or she’ll laugh at you for being a lazybones.”

The little black cat, having finished her meal, trotted back into the bedroom with a leisurely gait and began licking her paws.

Would Honey laugh at her for being a lazybones? Of course not.

Yu Yan had just sat up from the covers, but before she could step out of bed, Fu Yunqing found a pair of cotton socks and put them on her feet before letting her down. This intense, pampering indulgence made Yu Yan feel slightly unaccustomed, yet she thoroughly enjoyed it.

Suddenly, Yu Yan felt a prickle of guilt. Knowing full well that Fu Yunqing was hopelessly in love with her, she had teased her like that without taking any responsibility. She really was terrible.

She would have to apologize to her in a little bit.

Yu Yan went into the bathroom, and Fu Yunqing followed her inside. The vanity in their master bathroom featured double sinks; while Yu Yan brushed her teeth, Fu Yunqing meticulously washed her hands. Just as Yu Yan finished brushing and was about to wipe her face, Fu Yunqing spoke up, “Let me look at your teeth.”

“Huh?” Yu Yan was a little dazed.

“Your wisdom teeth used to flare up all the time. Have they been extracted yet?”

Had they been extracted? Yu Yan found herself unable to answer. She did not even know if the teeth were still there.

Fu Yunqing had expected as much. “Open your mouth. Let me have a look.”

Aside from dentists, no one had ever made such a request of Yu Yan. She was a bit unaccustomed to it, but the woman before her treated it as entirely natural—as ordinary as drinking milk tea she had already drunk from, putting on her socks, or reading her a bedtime story. There was even a touch of solemnity in her manner, making Yu Yan feel that even if she refused, Fu Yunqing would certainly persist.

    Fine.

Yu Yan tilted her head back and opened her mouth. Fu Yunqing cupped her cheek with one hand, while her other hand reached into her mouth to examine the interior of her oral cavity, her gaze intensely focused.

The strange sensation made Yu Yan furrow her brows, wanting to retreat.

“They haven’t been pulled yet. Have they swollen up lately?” Fu Yunqing asked.

    Yu Yan shook her head.

Fu Yunqing adjusted Yu Yan’s chin, signaling her to tilt her head higher. “Let me see if there are any cavities in the upper teeth.”

    “…”

Checking her for cavities, putting socks on her feet just now… all these things made Yu Yan feel deeply unaccustomed.

She felt that these were deeply, deeply intimate acts—far more intimate than sharing a straw, holding hands and hugging, or whispering sweet nothings.

So intimate that they seemed like things only a mother would do…

At that thought, Yu Yan’s heart trembled.

Her breathing tightened, her heart rate spiking, and her long eyelashes fluttered and trembled under the woman’s focused gaze. She quietly clenched her fingers, praying for Fu Yunqing’s examination to end quickly, yet simultaneously wishing it would slow down…

She lost all track of time. Her senses were entirely concentrated on Fu Yunqing’s hands—those fingers moving here one moment, there the next.

One moment instructing her to lift her head a little higher, the next asking her to open her mouth wider.

Yu Yan complied with her commands, but the checkup was simply so long and meticulous that she felt as though saliva was about to run from the corner of her lips.

Yet with Fu Yunqing gripping her jaw, she could not speak. She could only knit her brows tighter and tighter, terrified of making a fool of herself, utterly embarrassed and completely helpless.

Only after a good while did Fu Yunqing finally speak: “No cavities.”

A faint smile brushed the lips of the woman before her. She withdrew her hand from Yu Yan’s mouth and, with her thumb, wiped away the saliva that was already slipping from the corner of her lips. Then, as if offering praise, she patted her head and murmured, “You brushed diligently. Good girl.”

Yu Yan had no idea just how red her face was right now.

    “Jiejie…”

She looked at Fu Yunqing helplessly, swept by an indescribable urge.

“Hmm?” Fu Yunqing looked at her with a gentle smile, waiting for her to continue.

Yu Yan stammered, but after a long while, she still could not produce any words of substance.

Even though she clearly wanted to.

Was she trying to run away again? Fu Yunqing, however, had no intention of letting her off the hook this time. Pressing her palm against the warm side of Yu Yan’s neck, her fingertips tracing the rim of her ear, she asked patiently, “What is it?”

    “I…”

Since she remained silent, Fu Yunqing took the initiative to ask, “Last night in the car, you said you really wanted to… What did you want?”

“…” Yu Yan’s eyelashes quivered, her heart racing.

She had thought she had escaped by the skin of her teeth.

Who would have thought the day of reckoning would still come?

It felt as if Fu Yunqing were lightly scraping her with her fingernails. Enduring the continuous, tingling sensation wandering over her ear, Yu Yan tried hard to distract herself by thinking about what she had actually wanted, and with great effort, she finally remembered what she had intended to say at the time.

At the time, she had never intended to say it out loud; it had all been to tease her.

    But… now…

“What did you want? Be honest,” Fu Yunqing urged softly.

She could not play around anymore.

    She had to be honest.

“I… I wanted—I wanted you to do that to me again…”

Unsurprised, Fu Yunqing pursued, “Do what to you?”

Yu Yan bit her lip again.

“I don’t like a child who only speaks in halves.”

“Well… it’s…” She was clearly leading her on. Yu Yan knew she was being ensnared, yet she was already too spellbound to escape.

She did not like children who only spoke in halves. Last night Yu Yan had left things half-said—had she made her dislike her?

Yu Yan did not want her to dislike her.

From the time she was very, very young, ever since she realized that everyone else had a mother while she did not, she had desperately, intensely craved to be loved by a mother.

“Like… like in my dream. Holding my lips in yours, and then… sliding your tongue inside to wrap around mine…”

    “Very honest. Good girl.”

Yet Fu Yunqing remained completely unfazed by this confession. Calm and collected, she asked, “Then why did you run away?”

Yu Yan swallowed hard. “I was shy…”

“And now? Do you still want it?”

Yu Yan pursed her lips, her gaze darting around.

Fu Yunqing’s tone turned slightly firmer. “Speak.”

Unable to withstand the pressure, Yu Yan murmured, “…I—I don’t know.”

Not wanting to put too much pressure on her darling, Fu Yunqing softened once more. She gently cradled her face, guiding her to look into her eyes.

    “It’s alright.”

“It’s perfectly normal to be curious about these things, just as it is normal to have those kinds of dreams.”

“Kissing used to be a very ordinary thing between us. We would kiss each other every single day—a morning kiss, a night kiss, a goodbye kiss… If we ever missed even one of them, you would get cross with me, blaming me for not loving you as much anymore.”

“You were truly adorable when you were angry.”

“If my darling wants to try, jiejie can accompany you.”

    “…”

Fu Yunqing finally released her. Yu Yan fled the bathroom as if escaping for her life, with Fu Yunqing following close behind.

The little cat, exceptionally clingy this morning, clawed at Yu Yan’s thigh again. Though Yu Yan’s mind was in a complete whirl, she could not bear to ignore her. She scooped her up as she walked, murmuring gentle reassurances.

The bedroom offered a wide, expansive view, flooded with bright morning sunlight. The warm-toned decor, bathed in daylight, felt incredibly cozy and comfortable. The woman walking behind her took a seat on the plush sofa by the window, watching her quietly.

“Put Honey down,” Fu Yunqing said softly. “Come here.”

Yu Yan’s heart skipped a beat.

Slowly, she set Honey down. The cat bounded onto the nearby cat tree in a few leaps. Yu Yan walked over to Fu Yunqing’s side, her movements stiff and awkward. Just as she opened her mouth to speak, Fu Yunqing cut in, “Sit down.”

She lightly patted her lap as a cue.

    To sit on her lap…

Was this how they used to kiss?

Yu Yan was incredibly tense. Reaching out to steady herself on Fu Yunqing’s shoulders, she straddled her lap. Supported by her, she gingerly sat down on her lap.

As Yu Yan’s weight settled, Fu Yunqing held her waist and adjusted her position to ensure she sat securely. Yu Yan, slightly unaccustomed, held onto her shoulders as if afraid of falling, her breathing tense.

In this position, the height difference between them seemed to have inverted. Fu Yunqing tilted her face up, while Yu Yan looked down at her. With nowhere to hide, their eyes locked, and under jiejie’s gaze, Yu Yan’s thick eyelashes quivered continuously as she looked at her with earnest, bashful eyes.

    She was incredibly nervous.

In all her life, she had never experienced anything like this…

Yet she was also genuinely, intensely curious.

Beyond the physical weight and the searing heat of their pressed bodies, Yu Yan also brought Fu Yunqing a long-lost, familiar sense of security and profound satisfaction. It was just like those many warm winter nights of their past when they had held each other close, a time when Fu Yunqing truly and completely possessed her.

Fu Yunqing let out a soft sigh, reaching up to touch Yu Yan’s ear, which was burning hot to the touch.

Yu Yan’s face remained flushed as she mumbled, “I don’t know how to kiss.”

Yu Yan would have been too embarrassed to say such a thing to any other woman, as it made her seem so green—not even knowing how to kiss. But with Fu Yunqing, she could hide nothing.

    Fu Yunqing said, “It’s alright.”

“I will teach you from the very first step.”
