    Fu Yunqing Admits

Actually, she had been waiting for her to return all along

Heartache had once been a constant companion to Fu Yunqing. It followed her everywhere alongside Yu Yan — from major events like car accidents and fevers, to minor ones like walking barefoot, bumping into things, or accidentally getting scratched by a cat. Even quietly watching her would stir an inexplicable sense of debt.

It was as if Yu Yan had moved into the softest corner of her heart, rendering her so sensitive. That feeling had not faded with their separation. When she appeared again, it was as though she had never left.

She had always lived there. It was only that seeing her made Fu Yunqing’s heart come back to life.

    “I’m not angry.”

“I would never be angry at you for wanting to get close to Honey.”

That had never been the source of her anger.

She wanted Yu Yan to give her an answer, or an explanation, but the woman buried her head again, her neck flushing red from holding back.

Fu Yunqing ultimately couldn’t bear to force her. She handed her a tissue.

She softened her tone and told her, “I’ll take these things back to Honey.”

    “Mm…” Yu Yan responded, muffled.

Fu Yunqing looked at her deeply. She knew Yu Yan felt wronged, but they couldn’t linger by the roadside, and this was no place for a conversation.

Her heart was full of restraint and turmoil, completely unaware that someone was secretly delighted, taking advantage of her indulgence to act spoiled, smug with success.

Yu Yan lowered her head, raising a hand to rub her eyes. Her eyes were clearly red-rimmed, tears seemingly about to fall at any moment, yet they hid a sly smile — completely different from her previous low spirits.

She glanced at the navigation. They were less than five kilometers from Lu Yu’s home.

So fast, practically in the blink of an eye. This made Yu Yan, who had been indulged, feel that every remaining minute was worth cherishing, that she didn’t want to part from Fu-jiejie.

She actually hadn’t planned to put on such an act, to the point of red-rimmed eyes and tears. She’d only intended to stay quiet through the ride, letting Fu-jiejie feel distressed. She hadn’t expected that Fu-jiejie would actually coax her.

Marveling at her own acting skills while marveling at Fu-jiejie’s gentleness, she racked her brains thinking whether she should say something more during the remaining journey. When she came back to her senses, the car had already reached the apartment building.

    “We’re here.”

Only then did she return to her senses. Yu Yan, for Fu Yunqing’s convenience in taking all these toys home, left the cat-patterned knitted bag for her too, placing it on the passenger seat.

“Thank you, jiejie, for driving me home.”

She looked at her with reluctance and timidity, standing by the car to say goodbye. Fu Yunqing also looked at her. After a moment of eye contact, Yu Yan lowered her eyes. “Then I’ll go back first. Goodbye, jiejie.”

Saying this, Yu Yan turned around. She sensed Fu Yunqing’s hesitation, betting in her heart: at which step would Fu-jiejie call out to her?

But Yu Yan truly was hopeless. She couldn’t help turning back to look at her by the third step, not watching her feet, tripping over a stone. She lost her balance and fell to the ground with a cry.

Fu Yunqing started, unbuckling her seatbelt and getting out. Yu Yan had already stood up herself, grimacing in pain, her face contorted. Fu Yunqing held her arm, asking nervously, “Where did you fall?”

Yu Yan swore this time it absolutely wasn’t on purpose. She turned her palm, rubbed raw by the ground, upward for inspection. Fu Yunqing grasped her wrist, pulling it close to examine. Her palm was dusty, and there was a bloody scrape at the wrist bone.

Fu Yunqing took a deep breath, immediately letting go of her and returning to the car to get the first-aid kit1 she always kept there. She brought Yu Yan to sit on a nearby stone bench.

Yu Yan was told to sit. Fu Yunqing stood beside her, bending over.

It was actually just a minor scrape. Fu Yunqing rinsed the wound with saline, then used a cotton swab to apply iodine. Apart from a little sting from the iodine, her movements were so gentle Yu Yan almost couldn’t feel any pain.

Yu Yan looked up blankly, seeing Fu Yunqing’s tightly furrowed brows and focused gaze. She realized she was almost enveloped in her embrace, that if she leaned back slightly she could rest against her. The pain from the wound faded, replaced by a faint, prickling itch.

Yu Yan caught her pleasant scent, feeling light and happy, finally understanding the secret to making Fu-jiejie focus her gaze on her no matter what — getting drunk, getting hurt, and tears.

Finally, applying a sterile adhesive bandage2 over the wound, Fu Yunqing looked at that spot with tender distress, her brow tightly knitted yet full of tenderness, as if wishing to smooth away her pain with her gaze.

“Did you bump your knee?” she asked.

Yu Yan answered half a beat slow. “…No.”

Fu Yunqing met Yu Yan’s bright, fixed gaze. Was she feeling smug? Fu Yunqing knew her too well. She knew she had lost, unable to stop herself from caring about her, so of course Yu Yan would be smug. But there was no helping it. Compared to seeing her suffer, Fu Yunqing would rather see her smug.

She squatted down to roll up Yu Yan’s pant leg.

    Yu Yan froze.

She… how could she do this? Yu Yan looked at her in shock, her heart electrified, her throat dry. Instinctively she wanted to move her leg away. “I really didn’t hurt it in the fall.”

    “Don’t move.”

Yu Yan was stunned. Fu Yunqing acted as if she were doing something perfectly ordinary, rolling up her pant leg, seeing that her knee wasn’t injured, and immediately letting it down again. The weather today wasn’t warm.

“Watch where you’re walking from now on.” Fu Yunqing stood up, unable to stop herself from scolding.

    “…”

Yu Yan was still in a daze.

“Alright, go back quickly.” Fu Yunqing packed up the first-aid kit, instructing, “Don’t let the wound touch water these next few days. Go to the pharmacy, or order delivery, and buy waterproof sterile adhesive bandages, understand?”

    “Oh…”

Getting a response, Fu Yunqing hesitated, preparing to turn and leave. Unexpectedly, she was suddenly hugged by Yu Yan, who had stood up —

The girl wrapped her arms around her waist, her body pressing against her without the slightest gap, burying her face in her shoulder. She held her very tightly, with a hint of possessiveness.

Late autumn. The outdoors was shrouded in cold air. The girl’s body was warm and soft, immediately driving back the chill. Her hair and neck emitted a faint fragrance. She rubbed Fu Yunqing’s shoulder with her face, seemingly absentmindedly, yet her throat emitted a grievous whimper, softly calling her jiejie.

Fu Yunqing’s heart trembled. She unconsciously furrowed her brows, her gaze a mix of love and sorrow.

“Jiejie, when you get back, could you send me a photo of Honey eating canned food, or wearing the pendant?” She was breaking the rules.

“I really want to see. Just one photo would be enough, please…”

She was so clingy, exactly the same as before. Fu Yunqing lowered her eyelashes, involuntarily raising both hands, but Yu Yan misunderstood this as wanting to push her away. She refused to let go, burying her face deep in the hollow of Fu Yunqing’s neck. Her breath fell on her skin, creating a dense, prickling itch.

    She wanted to see Honey.

That time, Fu Yunqing had said she had no right to see or think about Honey anymore, hurting her heart. But she didn’t know that Fu Yunqing also deeply regretted it.

Whenever she remembered the way Yu Yan looked at her after being scolded, and her lonely figure rapidly shrinking in the parking garage, Fu Yunqing would feel heartache and regret.

She felt she shouldn’t have said such things. She was afraid Yanyan had really been frightened.

She really had been frightened, always careful and cautious, until now, when she sensed jiejie’s attitude had softened, and only then did she act spoiled and draw close again.

She was a delicate child, sometimes willful, sometimes shameless, even domineering and unreasonable. The Yu Yan of before had also held grudges. If Fu Yunqing herself had been fierce with her and didn’t coax her, Yu Yan would sulk, wouldn’t call her jiejie, and absolutely wouldn’t act spoiled with her.

She knew she was in the wrong. It was her mistake, her departure.

She had never been a good child. She was very bad. But it was precisely this version of her that could always win the most indulgence from Fu Yunqing. As long as she had the slightest issue, it would stir Fu Yunqing’s emotions.

But this didn’t mean Fu Yunqing would forgive her — if she wanted to return to her side, if she wasn’t doing well outside and wanted to come back to jiejie’s side, if she really, really, really knew she was wrong and wanted to come home, planning never to leave again, would Fu Yunqing not forgive her?

Fu Yunqing felt her dependence and the heartbeat pressed against her chest. This was the long-missed embrace of Yanyan.

Would Fu Yunqing really push her away? Would Fu Yunqing really bear to drive her off?

Would Fu Yunqing really bear to give her up?

    “…”

Yu Yan’s embrace had no gaps. Fu Yunqing slightly lowered her head, her cheeks inevitably rubbing against Yu Yan’s ears, her hair. Intimate, without distance.

    “…Mm.”

Fu Yunqing ultimately could not refuse this long-missed embrace and the chance to let Yu Yan draw close once more. She had to admit that she had softened toward her. The tender turn of her heart and the happiness she felt at this moment told her that she probably had no way to refuse Yu Yan’s request — just as she had actually, all this time, been waiting for her to return.

She missed it. She missed embraces. She missed the secure feeling of holding Yu Yan close.

Wasn’t this moment what she had yearned for all year?

“Then, could you also film a short video? Any kind is fine, okay?”

Hadn’t she just said one photo was enough?

    Pushing her luck again.

But a Yu Yan who didn’t push her luck with Fu Yunqing — would that really still be Yu Yan?

“We’ll see.” She let her hold her, still giving a very conservative answer.

We’ll see. Yu Yan seemed to pout but was actually secretly smiling, leaning in her arms, saying softly, “Then when you have time, could you reply to my messages a little? Before, every time I sent you messages I waited so long, always waiting for nothing, unable to sleep.” She was starting to want more again.

“I’ll reply when I’m not busy.”

    “Oh…”

“Can I still attend Teacher Fu’s classes? Just sitting in the back row where no one sits.” Someone had said she had no right to attend Teacher Fu’s classes.

“The school has always tacitly permitted auditing3. As long as you don’t disrupt discipline or affect others, everything else is up to you.”

Teacher Fu’s answer was already tolerant enough, but Yu Yan wasn’t satisfied, refusing to let go. Because her face was buried, her voice sounded muffled. “I want to know Teacher Fu’s opinion. Have I affected Teacher Fu?”

    She had affected her.

Yu Yan would make Fu Yunqing’s gaze drift to her of its own accord, would make her wish time would slow, and slower still.

    “No.” Fu Yunqing said.

“Then okay~” She dragged out a long, drawn-out note, not knowing what she was thinking, lingering in Fu Yunqing’s embrace for a long time without coming out. Staying in her arms to keep warm.

“The wind is strong here.” Fu Yunqing couldn’t quite bear it, afraid she would be too reluctant to part, and found an excuse to push her away. This time, Yu Yan, whose every request had been satisfied, finally obediently withdrew.

They looked at each other wordlessly. One was full of worries yet soft-hearted and doting; the other smiled like a flower without a care in the world.

Fu Yunqing urged, “Go up quickly. Don’t let the water touch your wound when you bathe.”

“Okay~” Yu Yan smiled brightly, reluctant to part. “Then I’m going back?”

    Fu Yunqing: “Mm.”

    “Bye-bye~ Thank you, drive safe~”

She took a step back, turned around, then felt very uneasy, turning back to urge, “Fu-jiejie must remember, don’t lie to me.”

“Taking photos of Honey, filming video, replying to messages — you can’t lie about any of it.”

Fu Yunqing didn’t speak. Yu Yan knew she was silently promising. Fu Yunqing stood in place, watching her disappear into the apartment building.

She felt this moment was familiar, like many times before when she had sent her to school, the scene before parting at the teaching building.

She appeared vividly before her eyes once more. She realized her heart was beginning to revive.

Lu Yu, exhausted after a day of work, pushed open the door and returned home listlessly, hearing Yu Yan humming a song.

“I’m a little painter, my painting skills are strong, I want to paint the new house, paint it very pretty, paint the roof and paint the walls, the pretty homeowner praised me for painting it so pretty…”

    In such a good mood?

Lu Yu placed the fruit she was carrying on the coffee table. Hearing the noise, someone came out to greet her. Seeing her face full of the weary, dead-eyed exhaustion of the working world, Yu Yan felt pity. “Working all day was really hard. Today jiejie will treat you to a big meal.”

“Okay, but I don’t have the strength to go out. Jiejie, have it delivered home.”

“Okay~” Yu Yan happily agreed, turning to order restaurant delivery.

Lu Yu got up to pour herself a glass of water, teasing, “You’re in such a good mood today?”

Yu Yan hummed twice. “Today’s me is happier than you can imagine.”

Before Lu Yu could ask how unimaginable it was, she was already saying with great pride, “She drove me back just now.”

Lu Yu played along: “Wow, driving you home again, feels like there’s a lot of progress.”

Yu Yan raised the corners of her lips: “This is just the beginning.”

She continued, “She accepted all the gifts I prepared for Honey! When getting out of the car I accidentally fell. She was startled and personally disinfected and bandaged me! Look~” She showed her the small dressing on her palm.

“You’re hurt?” Lu Yu was surprised, walking over to look. “Is it serious?”

“Not serious~ Just a little scrape, but Fu-jiejie was so anxious.”

Still so smug. Lu Yu: “You really are something. Watch your step when walking from now on.”

“Aiya~ That’s not important. What’s important is that with this fall, Fu-jiejie couldn’t bear to hold the past against me. She let me hug her, and promised to take photos and video of Honey for me, and won’t ignore my messages from now on.”

Lu Yu exclaimed, “You really are living the good life now, my good girl. Success is just around the corner.”

“Of course. She must love me to death. It’s all within my control. Also, do you know how beautiful she looks when driving? I was almost mesmerized on the road.”

Lu Yu laughed: “Why didn’t you really faint when you fell? If you had really fainted, your Fu-jiejie would be anxious and flustered for you, and right now you’d be lying in your Fu-jiejie’s big bed. Why would you need to come back and squeeze into this old, broken, small4 place with me?”

    “?!”

Yu Yan was simply awakened by a single sentence, realizing Lu Yu made too much sense, but she refused to admit her miscalculation, arguing forcefully: “What do you know? Sometimes progress that’s too fast isn’t a good thing. I want to play hard to get. I want to be near yet elusive. I want to seem right before her yet always just out of her reach. I want to make her think of me until she’s infatuated, think of me until longing overwhelms reason, and throw all caution aside to seize me back to her side and tell me she really misses me.”

This is what a truly wise woman should do. This is the method a charming woman should have.

“Okay~” Lu Yu gave her a thumbs up. “Sure thing, Yan-jie. Don’t overplay your hand.”

Yu Yan: “Rest assured, your Yan-jie has her own sense of propriety.”

After showing off before her sister, Yu Yan was immensely pleased with herself, happily returning to her room. Later, the restaurant food arrived. Lu Yu called her out to eat. Yu Yan was chatting heatedly with Fu Yunqing on her phone — Fu-jiejie hadn’t lied to her, really sending photos and video of Honey.

She had put that collar on Honey. The pendant with the words Safe and Sound5 was displayed prominently. The little cat held her head high and chest out, quite large, looking very mighty. There was also a video: Fu Yunqing holding a teaser wand playing with the cat. Honey was an active-type cat, attacking fiercely and passionately. But Yu Yan, apart from watching the cat, her gaze kept falling on Fu Yunqing’s fair, slender hand, following it swaying left and right. As if the one being teased wasn’t the cat, but her.

She really had a natural gift for being a woman’s dog. Just imagining it like this, she wanted to call her master.

Fu-jiejie was truly a heavenly dish6, a heavenly dish in every aspect.

Yu Yan sat at the dining table and took a photo of tonight’s dinner.

    Yu Yan: 【Today’s dinner~】

Yu Yan: 【Have Fu-jiejie and the kitten eaten? What did you eat?】

    Yu Yan: 【Little cat-puppy wagging her tail.jpg.】

After sending, feeling her stomach rumble, Yu Yan put down her phone and picked up her chopsticks.

Yu Yan wasn’t someone without conscience. Lu Yu worked so hard; the first bite should be hers. In a good mood, she eagerly placed two chicken wings in Lu Yu’s bowl, saying with a smile, “Please enjoy,” before picking up a chicken wing herself and biting into it. She hadn’t taken two bites when her phone on the side vibrated. She glanced at it; Fu Yunqing had actually replied.

    So fast!

Fu-jiejie said: 【The kitten is eating canned food】

The kitten is eating canned food, so cute. Yu Yan quickly put down her chopsticks to reply: 【What about Fu-jiejie?】

    Fu-jiejie: 【Not yet】

Why hadn’t she eaten yet? The cook at Fu-jiejie’s house was too incompetent. It was so late already; what to do if jiejie was hungry?

Yu Yan thought of what Lu Yu said not long ago, put down her chopsticks, and typed: 【Does jiejie’s house still need a nanny?】

Yu Yan: 【I really want to go cook for jiejie】

    Nanny?

As expected she was talking nonsense. Fu Yunqing didn’t want to deal with her. Yu Yan’s message popped up again: 【Really~ I can do many things, can sweep and mop, can help jiejie feed the cat and scoop litter, can cook for jiejie and wake jiejie up. Whatever jiejie wants me to do I’ll do. I don’t want wages, as long as room and board are included so I can stay by jiejie’s side accompanying jiejie】

The more Yu Yan spoke, the more she felt this plan was simply too feasible. Right now she didn’t live with Fu Yunqing; apart from occasionally being able to audit her classes, she couldn’t see her at other times. If she went to her house as a nanny, she could be with her day and night. Being her little nanny, taking care of her daily needs, wouldn’t that be a better way to seduce Fu-jiejie? Yu Yan was already planning to buy a maid outfit, on some dark and windy night, secretly climbing into jiejie’s bed.

The more Yu Yan thought, the more excited she became, enthusiastically continuing to type, attempting to persuade the other party. Fu Yunqing interrupted her: 【Don’t play with your phone while eating】

What the heck. Yu Yan furrowed her brows. How was Fu Yunqing so strict like a parent.

Yu Yan: 【Jiejie really won’t consider it QAQ】

    Fu Yunqing didn’t reply.

    Damn it.

But what could be done? Right now she had the right to selectively ignore Yu Yan’s messages, and Yu Yan couldn’t complain or lose her temper, could only obediently endure it.

Little did she know, having Yu Yan as her little maid was something countless women couldn’t refuse.

Yu Yan obediently: 【Okay then, I’ll eat properly】

From noon’s parting until now, she had been sending messages, practically sending them all afternoon. After this sentence, indeed no more messages came. Fu Yunqing breathed a sigh of relief; finally she could be quiet for a while.

But it was only quiet for a little while.

Not half an hour later, the phone started vibrating non-stop. Really too good at pushing her luck. After tasting sweetness she became greedier and greedier. Fu Yunqing didn’t really want to deal with her, didn’t want her to get too carried away, so she left her on read7 for a while.

    Only a while.

Didn’t check the time, but at most five minutes.

Ultimately still couldn’t bear it. She had left her on read for so long already; she knew the hardship of waiting. Since she had promised her today, it was better not to leave her hanging.

    Yu Yan: 【I’m full】

    Yu Yan: 【Has Fu-jiejie eaten?】

Yu Yan: 【Want to go for a walk by the river tonight, because I’m in such a good mood】

Yu Yan: 【Lu Yu says I’ve been particularly decadent these days, apart from going to find you I haven’t really gone out, almost stifled to death】

Yu Yan: 【Miss you so much】

    Yu Yan: 【Miss you】

The familiar stream of consciousness. Fu Yunqing’s gaze softened, replying: 【Eating now】

Fu Yunqing: 【Did you buy the waterproof sterile adhesive bandages?】

Yu Yan: 【I forgot when jiejie didn’t mention it! Will buy when I go for a walk later】

    Yu Yan: 【Then jiejie eat properly~ I won’t disturb you】

Fu Yunqing put down her phone, picking up her chopsticks again. At her feet was a black cat, standing on the floor looking straight at her, a red string around its neck, the gold plate engraved with “Safe and Sound” reflecting light at its chest, very wealthy-looking. It lingered without leaving, but not because it was greedy wanting to eat something. Honey was a picky little cat, never eating human food, only eating her own cat food and snacks. She just loved staring at people.

Fu Yunqing often felt somewhat indebted to her. A lonely little cat; the person who once had the most time to accompany her, who played with her the most, had already left for a long time.

Did she still remember? Did she want her to come back?

As if possessing some telepathic ability to know when she’d finished eating, Yu Yan was extremely punctual, sending a pestering message at the first moment Fu Yunqing put down her chopsticks and got up to return to her room.

    Yu Yan: 【[Image]】

Yu Yan: 【Bought them, bought many, the wound doesn’t hurt at all now】

Fu Yunqing held the door, letting the graceful little cat trailing slowly behind her slip inside before closing it completely, replying: 【Mm】

    Yu Yan: 【There’s a moon tonight】

    Yu Yan: 【[Image]】

Fu Yunqing walked to the window, looking up. The moon hung above the clouds, a curved sliver showing.

She wasn’t quite sure how to reply. She couldn’t be too warm, couldn’t be too gentle. She still had to hold her back a little. After all, they still had many unresolved problems, many things left unsaid. But… that thorn in Fu Yunqing’s heart — she didn’t dare think about it, didn’t dare pull it out to interrogate, afraid of wounding their currently fragile relationship.

If Yanyan really did return to her side and never leave again, that thorn would eventually dissolve, she thought.

Without waiting for her reply, the fiery woman sent another photo.

It was a ragdoll cat she’d seen at the pet shop window.

    Yu Yan: 【She’s so pretty】

Yu Yan: 【Her fur is so soft, eyes are blue, and she meowed at me!】

Yu Yan: 【So it turns out when a mom sees someone else’s child, she really does think of her own】

Yu Yan: 【Miss Honey so much QAQ】

Yu Yan: 【Honey is the cutest little cat in the world】

Yu Yan: 【Can I video call with Honey tonight?】

    Yu Yan: 【I know it’s too much】

Yu Yan: 【Just two minutes okay?】

Yu Yan: 【I’m willing to exchange everything I have】

    Yu Yan: 【Please jiejie】

    Yu Yan: 【Cat acting spoiled.jpg.】

    Yu Yan: 【Please please.jpg.】

    Yu Yan: 【Pitiful.jpg.】

    Yu Yan: 【Tearful eyes.jpg.】

    Fu Yunqing sighed.

    Flooding the screen again.

    But so cute.
