    A Woman’s Maid

Apologize when necessary, show deep affection when appropriate

    The next evening.

Yu Yan had finished her makeup and put together her outfit. She twirled in front of the mirror, extremely satisfied. She wore a black knitted bodycon skirt paired with a gray fur coat, and her long hair was slightly curled. She had put on a sweet and seductive makeup look; just a slight curve of her eyes made her look enchanting and incredibly sexy.

    Would Fu-jiejie like it?

Yu Yan really wanted to send this photo to her to flirt a little, but she was afraid of tipping her off, making Fu-jiejie—who originally didn’t know she was going to have dinner with her—notice something amiss.

Yu Yan specially booked a window seat. When she arrived, the sunset glow was still there. The purple fiery clouds on the horizon paired with Yuncheng’s night view created an absolutely beautiful scenery, perfect for a date.

A message came on her phone. Ran Ling said she had arrived. Yu Yan looked up, and after a short while, a waiter led two women with striking auras over.

Yu Ting had a head of black hair, wearing a low-cut black and gold long dress draped with a black leather jacket. Ran Ling linked arms with her, wearing a midi skirt paired with a Chanel-style jacket. One looked full of high-class sophistication, while the other looked especially gentle. Walking over, they were talking and laughing, looking so affectionate and pleasing to the eye.

If it weren’t for Ran-jiejie looking languid, half-leaning against the person beside her, it would look exactly like they were walking a runway.

Yu Yan’s eyes lit up. She stood up and greeted the two jiejies.

“Good evening~” The two jiejies smiled at her.

The two sat down opposite her. Ran Ling sat in the seat by the window and said, “The scenery is so beautiful. I haven’t seen such pretty fiery clouds in a long time. Yunqing will definitely like it.”

“Xiao Yu is very good at picking places,” Yu Ting said.

    Wow, she got praised.

Having dinner together for the first time, she was still a little nervous. Yu Yan’s cheeks flushed slightly as she said, “Not nearly as beautiful as the two jiejies. You two walking together are a hundred times more beautiful than the sunset.”

Hearing this, Ran Ling’s shoulders trembled as she laughed out loud. “Your mouth is truly so sweet. So lovable.” No wonder Yunqing had never been able to forget her.

Yu Yan let out a silly “hehe” laugh at the praise.

After Ran Ling finished laughing, her phone lit up. She looked down at it and said, “Yunqing says she’s arrived. She should be coming up right away. You need to get ready.”

    She was almost here!

Yu Yan hurriedly asked, “Do I look good today? How is my makeup?”

“Of course you look good. You’d look great even without makeup, let alone after dressing up so meticulously. However, putting on a good performance doesn’t just rely on this. You should know that Yunqing doesn’t care about these things. You should know how to coax her properly, right?” Ran Ling looked at her, seeking confirmation.

Ran Ling didn’t know she had amnesia and assumed she knew everything about their past like the back of her hand. Since Yunqing still cared about her so much, she just needed to prescribe the right medicine—apologize when necessary, and show deep affection when appropriate.

    This wasn’t anything very difficult.

    “…”

    Yu Yan nodded, lacking confidence.

    “I’m rooting for you.”

Ran Ling looked completely relaxed, asking Yu Ting to help her take a photo with the sunset. The urge to act solicitously toward beautiful women was simply uncontrollable; Yu Yan offered to take a photo of the two of them together.

Not long after taking the photos, she noticed someone walking over from a distance. Looking up, it was indeed the waiter leading Fu Yunqing.

She was tall, her back straight, her posture elegant. A high-necked black tight sweater paired with a dark apricot woolen coat—it was elegant and gentle, giving off a strong late-autumn vibe.

Yu Yan watched her cautiously. Seeing her gaze sweep around, she was definitely looking for someone. Yu Yan felt inexplicably guilty, having an impulse to hide herself so she wouldn’t be seen. The next second, Fu Yunqing turned her face back and met her gaze directly.

Yu Yan’s heart tightened, and she subconsciously straightened her back. She prayed nervously that Fu-jiejie absolutely wouldn’t just turn around and leave. Perhaps because the distance was too far, in Yu Yan’s eyes, it seemed like she just lifted her eyelids to look at her, her expression unreadable.

Fortunately, she didn’t turn around and leave.

    “Yunqing~ You’re here.”

Ran Ling and Yu Ting smiled and greeted her. It was clear that the two jiejies were trying very hard to lighten the atmosphere, but there was no accommodating smile on Fu Yunqing’s face. She glanced at the wife-and-wife1 pair, then looked at Yu Yan once again.

Her gaze wasn’t considered cold, but it wasn’t warm either. Yu Yan felt inexplicably nervous being looked at like that. She stood up. “Fu-jiejie…”

She remained silent, but her eyes were clearly asking: Why are you here?

“It was me who wanted to treat you to dinner,” Yu Yan admitted.

Her eyes gazed at Fu Yunqing with apology as she explained softly, “I wanted to thank you for helping me that day, but you didn’t reply to my messages. I thought that if I asked you out myself, you definitely wouldn’t come, so I played a little trick and asked Ran-jiejie to invite you out for me…”

In the past, she rarely felt that Fu Yunqing’s eyes were so deep and unfathomable, but now she often felt this way. Unable to figure out her mood, Yu Yan broke out in a cold sweat. She furrowed her brows in worry and whispered, “Fu-jiejie, I’m sorry… Are you angry?”

She was uneasy, her fingers pinching and twisting the hem of her clothes into a ball as she accepted the other’s scrutiny. After a long while, the suffocating silence radiating from Fu Yunqing suddenly dissolved.

    “No,” she said faintly.

There was no blame, nor was there anger—only a tolerant distance.

Yu Yan felt inexplicably disappointed but breathed a sigh of relief, quickly inviting her to sit down. The opposite side was occupied by the wife-and-wife pair, so Fu Yunqing could only sit beside her. Yu Yan knew very well how to grasp the boundaries; she didn’t initiate physical contact right from the start—things like physical contact should at least wait until they were eating to happen “accidentally.”

There were a total of two menus. Yu Yan gave one to Ran-jiejie and Boss Yu, handed the other to Fu Yunqing, and sat obediently to the side, waiting.

“What does Yanyan want to eat?” Ran Ling flipped through the pages and took the initiative to ask.

“I’m not a picky eater. I’ll eat whatever you jiejies order,” she said obediently.

This was a Chinese restaurant. Ran Ling said, “Tingting and I like to eat lighter flavors.”

“Mm-hmm, I like light flavors too,” Yu Yan said.

The three of them had the same taste, and so did Fu Yunqing. They ordered a few light home-style dishes: steamed pumpkin, steamed egg custard, steamed sea bass, and red date and longan soup.

Yu Yan thought that aside from that whatever soup, they were all dishes she loved to eat.

Just as she was feeling secretly delighted, the person beside her handed the menu back to her, her cuffs bringing over a faint fragrance. “See if you want to order anything else.”

Yu Yan’s face lit up with joy. She took the menu. “Okay~”

She actually hadn’t expected to have the right to order food; she had already prepared for Fu-jiejie to ignore her completely.

She looked at the menu and felt that it wouldn’t do to not have an appetizer. “Let’s add a portion of Sichuan pepper chicken.”

Just as she was feeling gleeful and wanted to proactively ask Fu-jiejie if that was okay, she saw her frown, looking displeased. Yu Yan was slightly taken aback—was there a problem somewhere?

Could it be that because she didn’t like heavily seasoned food and wouldn’t eat it, it wasn’t even allowed on the table? Yu Yan didn’t dare to take the risk and changed her tune, “Forget it, no need. This is enough.”

She didn’t order anything else, closed the menu, and handed it back to the waiter. She stole a glance at Fu Yunqing and noticed that her furrowed brows had relaxed a bit.

While waiting for the food to be served, before Yu Yan could try to start any topic, Ran Ling had already begun chatting with her.

“The sunset glow just now was especially beautiful. It was purple fiery clouds, but now they’ve all turned into dark clouds,” Ran Ling said. Following her words, Fu Yunqing looked out the window. The sky had already darkened, a dense expanse of black overhead.

It had clearly only been a short while. Yu Yan thought, Beautiful things fade so easily.

“Doesn’t Yunqing like purple the most? Just now, Yanyan kept telling me she wanted Fu-jiejie to hurry up and arrive, or else it would be too late to see it,” she said with a faint smile.

Wow. Ran-jiejie was such a good wingwoman. Yu Yan shot her a grateful look. So Fu-jiejie’s favorite color was purple? Yu Yan said, “It’s okay! I took a lot of photos, I can send them for Fu-jiejie to see.” As she spoke, she looked at Fu Yunqing with eyes full of smiles, and had even started fiddling with her phone to pull up the photos she just took.

But Fu Yunqing was noncommittal and paid her no mind, showing absolutely no intention of looking. Yu Yan watched her for a moment, and when she didn’t get any response, her smile fell. She consciously shifted her gaze away and pursed her lips.

    Fine then.

She knew she had no right to throw a tantrum.

The two of them had an unspoken understanding. Fu Yunqing hadn’t replied to a single message Yu Yan had sent her; clearly, they weren’t in a relationship where they could share photos of scenery with each other.

It was just Yu Yan one-sidedly and humbly trying to please her.

    Sigh…

What was she supposed to do if she was still this cold?

Actually, there was a lot to learn when dining with a girl. There was a lot of room to perform and many details that could earn bonus points. It seemed Ran-jiejie understood this logic far better than she did. As soon as the dishes were served, she picked up a bite of food and fed it to Boss Yu.

Yu Ting said softly, “It’s delicious.”

How could it not be delicious? It was an expected answer. Ran Ling curled her lips. Yu Ting’s eyes were full of contentment as she lifted her gaze to look at her—Yu Yan didn’t know if this was a hint for her to learn from them.

Yu Yan naturally needed to quickly learn from this.

Fu-jiejie had ordered the sea bass; did she really like eating fish? But even sea bass would have bones. Yu Yan used a spoon to scoop a large chunk of fish meat onto a small plate, then used a new pair of chopsticks to meticulously pick out the bones. Once she finished, before she even had time to take a single bite of food herself, she pushed the fish meat in front of Fu Yunqing.

Fu Yunqing noticed and looked at her. Yu Yan had just been feeling defeated, but right now, she was looking at her with a face full of anticipation.

    “…”

    Would Fu Yunqing eat it?

If she wouldn’t even accept this much, Yu Yan would definitely be heartbroken.

Her eyes took on a pleading look.

Fu Yunqing fell silent for a moment. She shifted her gaze away, picked up a piece of fish meat from the small plate, and brought it to her mouth. Waiting beside her, Yu Yan’s eyes lit up, and only then did she dare to ask, “Is it delicious?”

Fu Yunqing didn’t look at her eyes anymore. She lowered her eyes to the dishes on the table and gave a faint “Mm.”

Hearing jiejie say it was delicious, the encouraged Yu Yan immediately grew energetic. Filled with a sense of accomplishment after jiejie finished eating, she continued to work away diligently. Of course, she didn’t forget to serve her other dishes or scoop soup for her. In short, she just wanted her to feel that she was entirely devoted to her.

The result was that Fu Yunqing was already half-full, while she hadn’t even had a few bites of food herself. This kind of work generally couldn’t be done by someone who was too much of a glutton.

The endless feeding was witnessed by the two sitting opposite them, let alone Fu Yunqing. She could naturally feel Yu Yan’s enthusiasm toward her, her cautious attempts to please her, and her heart full of anticipation.

Sensing a gaze fixed on her from the front, Fu Yunqing lifted her eyes and met Ran Ling’s gaze.

She hasn’t even taken a few bites herself, and she’s stuffing it all to you. She’s really so good. It seems her desire to reconcile is quite sincere—she conveyed this with a sighing gaze.

After picking out the fish bones, Yu Yan started peeling shrimp. When she pushed the shrimp meat in front of Fu Yunqing once again, Fu Yunqing finally spoke up, “No need to give it to me.”

Yu Yan froze, subconsciously thinking that Fu Yunqing had found her annoying. Her eyes showed her loss of what to do. Fu Yunqing’s tone softened a bit, carrying a hint of helplessness, “Eat your own food.”

Oh, eat her own food. At times like this, she absolutely had to understand social cues and couldn’t continue insisting and put too much pressure on the other party. Yu Yan let out two “Mm-hmms,” scooped a spoonful of fish meat for herself, picked out the bones, and ate it in one bite, her eyes curving into crescents.

    It really was delicious.

Finally able to bury her head in her food, Yu Yan, who was genuinely a little hungry, ate with great relish. Then she saw a slender hand set a bowl of soup down in front of her. Fu Yunqing’s voice drifted over from above: “Drink this.”

Before she even had time to be happy, she realized it was that red date and longan soup she didn’t really like. Yu Yan hesitated. Fu Yunqing seemed to be able to read minds; she actually knew she didn’t like it, saying, “It replenishes qi and blood. You need to drink more during your period.”

    “…”

    “Mm, okay. Thank you, Fu-jiejie.”

Fu Yunqing still remembered that she was on her period! So, did she actually order this soup specially for her?

Because she didn’t like it, Yu Yan hadn’t planned on touching it at all, but if Fu-jiejie told her to drink it, she simply couldn’t resist. What’s more, it carried a deeper meaning of care and concern.

Yu Yan picked up the red date and longan soup and took a sip.

It turns out it wasn’t that bad after all.

The weather forecast had said it would rain tonight, and sure enough, dark clouds densely covered the sky outside the window. Because the building was so high up, the dark clouds seemed to be right before their eyes, appearing exceptionally oppressive. Seeing that the jiejies were mostly done eating, Yu Yan very consciously called the waiter over to foot the bill.

“The total is eleven thousand three hundred. May I ask if you’ll be…”

“WeChat,” Yu Yan said, taking out her phone and opening her payment QR code. She secretly rejoiced in her heart that she had earned enough money streaming yesterday. With a beep, the payment was successful. More than ten thousand yuan was swiped away just like that, but she didn’t feel the slightest bit of heartache. She only felt an unparalleled sense of pride at having treated beautiful women to dinner.

However, she remembered that she seemed to need to consider whether she had money to take a taxi home. After paying, she hurriedly checked. There was just over two hundred yuan left in her account. That was good, it was still enough to take a taxi home. Her heart settled back into her stomach, and she was already scheming to start another livestream to scrape up some money once she got home.

Exiting the app in satisfaction, she looked up and suddenly collided with Fu Yunqing’s gaze. Yu Yan was slightly stunned. Following her line of sight, she lowered her head and found that she was looking at her phone.

Her phone screen was cracked—she had accidentally dropped it on the ground when she ran out to chase after jiejie the first time they reunited. She hadn’t gone out to the mall and hadn’t had the time to get it replaced. Last time she livestreamed, she made over five thousand yuan, and adding that to the unspent money from the previous times, Yu Yan truly only had a little over ten thousand yuan to her name. After swiping for this meal, she genuinely only had her taxi fare home left.

Actually, Yu Yan didn’t care about these things at all. So what if her phone was cracked? Couldn’t she just get it replaced the next time she went out? So what if her money was gone? Couldn’t she just go home, start a livestream, and scrape up some more?

But… all of this had been seen by Fu-jiejie.

    Very pitiful, right?

Still using a phone with a shattered screen, scrimping and saving just to treat jiejie to a meal and see her, not hesitating to spend every last penny she owned. Having only two hundred yuan left—how was that any different from being completely penniless?

When had Yu Yan ever suffered such grievances? Ever since leaving Fu-jiejie, she truly had it so hard.

Meeting Fu Yunqing’s eyes, Yu Yan blinked. She pursed her lips in a forced smile, lowered her head, and put her phone away, trying to hide her destitution, which only made her look deeply insecure.

    Insecure…

But when had Yu Yan ever been insecure in the past? She had grown up in freedom and sunshine, always imaginative, bold and confident, generous and free-spirited. What drew people’s eyes to her the most were her eyes that looked bright and sly when she smiled—curved, confident, and languid, as if the whole world were her plaything.

She shouldn’t be insecure. She shouldn’t be timid. She shouldn’t be sad.

Fu Yunqing parted her lips as if she wanted to say something, but stopped herself. She shifted her gaze away, a hidden ache gripping her heart.
