    Extra 2 [Bonus Extra]

    Zhan Nansheng’s Perspective

    A hopeless, suffocating darkness.

Zhan Nansheng thought she would sink into this void forever, until a speck of blue light suddenly flared in the depths of her consciousness.

    [Intense emotional fluctuations detected]

    [Scanning soul wavelength… Match successful]

A sharp, mechanical voice pierced through the chaos.

Zhan Nansheng snapped her eyes open, finding herself floating in a blue ocean of data streams.

    “I’m… not dead?”

Her voice rippled through the void, and countless holographic screens suddenly popped up from all directions.

[Welcome to the Rebirth Transit Station, Ms. Zhan Nansheng]

[Detected that you meet the criteria for system binding]

A glowing cube spun before her, projecting text that burned against her retinas:

[You have the opportunity to return to the past and change your destiny]

    [Do you accept binding?]

Zhan Nansheng’s thoughts turned slowly, like rusted gears.

    Rebirth? Changing destiny?

She instinctively touched her chest, where the warmth of Wu Lan’s embrace still lingered, as if it were all a dream.

    She had died twice.

The first time, she had died alone; the second time, Wu Lan had held her as they faced death together.

She couldn’t even tell which was real and which was fake.

Was Wu Lan holding her as they faced death together just a hopeless illusion of hers before dying?

Zhan Nansheng couldn’t figure it out.

“Change what?” She heard her own dry, raspy voice ask.

[You may select any node to start anew and change your past destiny.]

[The system will provide the optimal route.]

    Zhan Nansheng’s fingertips trembled uncontrollably.

“Will taking revenge on her… make you happy?” the system asked. “Think about how she used you.”

“I don’t need revenge. I need answers,” Zhan Nansheng whispered.

The cube flickered twice, switching to an image of Wu Lan.

It was a scene Zhan Nansheng had never seen before.

Wu Lan sat alone in the Presidential Palace office, her fingers tracing a faded group photo from their military academy days, her tears splashing against the glass of the frame.

Zhan Nansheng’s breathing suddenly became difficult.

She saw more fragments: Wu Lan burning the evidence of her father’s crimes; Wu Lan traveling alone every year on the anniversary of her death to the star region where they first met; and finally, in the star region where she had died, choosing to end her own life in the exact same manner…

“Stop!” She suddenly covered her eyes. “None of this… matters anymore.”

    The system suddenly fell silent.

The data stream froze into an icy-blue glacier.

[Your father can serve another term.]

[You will become the youngest fleet commander.]

[Everyone who has let you down will pay the price.]

    Zhan Nansheng shook her head.

The power her father had exchanged for countless lives, the high position reached by stepping on corpses—these were never what she wanted.

And Wu Lan… with that stubborn personality of hers, preferring to accompany her to death rather than defend herself—even if they restarted ten thousand times, she would probably still make the same choice.

“This is fine.” She unclenched her tight fists, a faint shadow of the two of them embracing in their final moments appearing in her palm. “We’re… even.”

    The cube suddenly shook violently.

    [Warning!]

[Why are both of you so difficult to deal with?!]

Zhan Nansheng keenly caught the keyword: “‘Both’?”

The data stream suddenly became turbulent, and Zhan Nansheng saw—

In another memory fragment, Wu Lan was also standing in this blue space, refusing to change history.

“What did she choose?” Zhan Nansheng’s voice suddenly turned sharp. “Tell me!”

In the footage playing before her, Wu Lan said to the system, “I want to go back to the moment she died.”

Zhan Nansheng’s thoughts ground to a halt.

So that wasn’t an illusion. Wu Lan had truly given up the chance of rebirth just to die with her.

“My choice is the same as hers.” She smiled, her tears turning into data points of light that drifted in the air. “People like us… were never suited for rebirth anyway, and we won’t regret.”

The cube suddenly exploded with a blinding golden light.

    [No way!]

    [The readers don’t agree!]

[We must arrange a new map for you!]

Zhan Nansheng closed her eyes, blinded by the sudden harsh light.

When she opened them again, a brand-new interface floated before her:

    [Modern parallel world loading…]

[No interstellar wars / No political conspiracies / No painful angst]

    [Do you accept transmigration?]

She stared blankly at the purely sweet background setting highlighted in the introduction. The image of Wu Lan wearing an apron and cooking was both unfamiliar and strangely familiar.

    “Is this… actually possible?”

    [Last chance]

[Do you want it or not?]

Zhan Nansheng looked at the gentle smile on “Wu Lan’s” face on the virtual screen, recalling the expression on her face before the explosion when she said, “Living without you is no different from being dead.”

She suddenly realized that perhaps, in countless parallel universes, they were destined to be endlessly entangled.

    “I do.”

The moment that syllable left her mouth, the entire space suddenly collapsed into a vortex.

Zhan Nansheng felt herself falling, and amidst the howling wind, she heard the system’s final notification:

    [Memory Retention Mode activated]

    [Wishing you a pleasant life.]

When Zhan Nansheng opened her eyes, dazzling sunlight was spilling through the sheer curtains onto the beige sheets.

She instinctively reached for her waist; there was no ion gun, no tactical belt, only soft silk pajamas.

“This is…” She sat up abruptly as a wave of dizziness washed over her.

    [Welcome to the 21st century]

[Current coordinates: 17th Floor, Bihu Apartments, S City, China]

    [Date: May 20, 20XX1]

A translucent system interface hovered near the head of the bed. Zhan Nansheng reached out to grab it, but her fingertips passed straight through the glowing words.

“Where’s Wu Lan?” Her voice was so hoarse it didn’t sound like her own.

The system cube spun above her palm, projecting a holographic image.

In the image, Wu Lan stood in the rain wearing a black trench coat, talking to the air.

Zhan Nansheng immediately lunged toward the projection, but only caught empty air.

“This is a recording from three days ago,” the system said. “She woke up two weeks before you, but she refused to bind.”

The Wu Lan in the recording suddenly sneered, “Rebirth? Changing destiny? Why should I believe this isn’t another trap?”

The system complained to her in despair:

    [She’s too vigilant.]

[I’ve tried every possible way to get her to bind, but she refuses no matter what…]

[Now she won’t even speak to me.]

Zhan Nansheng suddenly burst into a soft chuckle.

That was indeed Wu Lan—the eternally suspicious Director of the Federation Bureau of Investigation.

“Let me speak to her,” Zhan Nansheng said.

    [No way!]

[She’ll realize the system has been breached.]

    [The rules of this world—]

“Just one sentence,” Zhan Nansheng interrupted the system. “Tell her… I don’t resent her anymore.”

    The cube suddenly flashed violently.

[…Attempting to establish a temporary channel.]

The waiting time felt infinitely stretched, as Zhan Nansheng paced back and forth in the apartment.

    当暮色染红整面落地窗时,系统终于有了回应:

    [She agreed.]

    [She’s on her way.]

    [Estimated arrival time…]

Zhan Nansheng didn’t even wait for the system to finish before rushing to the bathroom.

As the hot water washed over her body, she realized that this body had none of those old scars. Her skin was as smooth as mutton-fat jade2.

The face in the mirror was young and unfamiliar to her.

It lacked the sharp lines forged by the fires of war, possessing only the soft contours of a college student.

She tried to smirk coldly, but no matter how she looked at it, it just seemed like she was throwing a tantrum.

“Even the pheromones…” She suddenly realized something and abruptly turned off the shower.

In this world, the physiological traits of Alphas and Omegas had disappeared; she would never again be suppressed by Wu Lan’s pheromones until her legs went weak.

    This discovery made her laugh.

As the night deepened, Zhan Nansheng fell asleep without realizing it while waiting.

In her dream, she returned to that burning mech cockpit, Wu Lan’s blood dripping onto her face.

She tried desperately to grasp the other’s hand, only to catch a handful of ashes.

    “Don’t go!”

She snapped awake, only to find a very real warmth pressed against her lips.

In the darkness, someone was holding down her wrists, a hot tongue forcing open her teeth.

The familiar scent of fir flooded her nose; it was Wu Lan’s scent, yet lacked that knee-weakening pheromone.

“Ngh…!” Zhan Nansheng struggled instinctively, but was pressed even harder into the sofa cushions.

The person released her wrists, moving to cradle the back of her head instead, deepening this kiss that carried the coolness of the night dew.

As the moonlight spilled through the gap in the curtains, she finally saw the face she had yearned for day and night.

“Wu… Wu Lan?” Her voice shook uncontrollably.

The person lying on top of her froze.

Wu Lan’s eyelashes cast fine shadows in the moonlight, the depths of her eyes surging with emotions Zhan Nansheng had never seen before.

For a few seconds, they just stared at each other in silence, then Wu Lan suddenly buried her head in the crook of her neck, her breaths so hot they nearly scalded her skin.

    “It’s me, Eldest Miss.”

“It really is you.” She suddenly wrapped her arms around Wu Lan’s neck, pulling her down to bite her lips fiercely.

    “Eldest Miss… my Eldest Miss…”

Wu Lan’s kisses rained down on her face like raindrops; the moment the cool air touched her skin, it was immediately covered by her hot lips and tongue.

When Wu Lan’s teeth grazed her collarbone, Zhan Nansheng gasped and arched her back.

“Wait!” Zhan Nansheng suddenly pressed against Wu Lan’s shoulders. “Pheromones… There are no pheromones!”

    Wu Lan’s movements stopped.

“So that means I can…” Zhan Nansheng’s eyes shone with startling brilliance as she suddenly flipped over and straddled Wu Lan’s waist.

But her smugness didn’t last long—Wu Lan knew every weakness of her body all too well.

When those fingertips grazed the dimples on her lower back, Zhan Nansheng went limp like a boneless cat.

“You’re cheating… ah!” Her protest dissolved into a whimper.

Before Zhan Nansheng could react, Wu Lan suddenly scooped her completely off the floor.

Zhan Nansheng let out a startled cry and wrapped her arms tightly around her neck as her pajama top slid completely off her shoulder.

“Where’s the bed?” Wu Lan’s voice was already hoarse beyond measure.

Before Zhan Nansheng could even lower her hand pointing toward the bedroom, she was tossed into the cloud-like bedding.

This time, Wu Lan completely threw off her restraint.

Zhan Nansheng shook her head, suddenly tilting her head up to bite Wu Lan’s lower lip.

As the rhythm gradually spiraled out of control, Zhan Nansheng’s startled cries instantly turned into sweet, cloying moans.

In shame and annoyance, she tried to cover her mouth, but Wu Lan pinned her wrists above her head.

“It sounds beautiful,” Wu Lan whispered, licking her earlobe. “It sounds so much better than the names you used to call me back then.”

Zhan Nansheng wanted to curse her, but she was shattered into uneven gasps.

The two held each other tightly, as if wishing they could remain like this until the end of time.

Afterward, as Zhan Nansheng’s breathing gradually calmed down and her reason returned, she glared at Wu Lan, who had taken advantage of her vulnerability, with a mixture of pique and anger.

“Wu Lan, you bastard! Now that there’s no pheromone influence, I want to be on top. Don’t think you can brush me off!”

Wu Lan pressed her forehead against hers and laughed, “Alright, let’s go eat first to replenish our strength. Tonight, I’m entirely at your disposal, Eldest Miss.”

Only then did Zhan Nansheng hum in satisfaction, letting Wu Lan carry her to wash up and change her clothes.

    1. In Chinese internet culture, the date May 20 (5/20) is a popular romantic holiday because the numbers 5-2-0 (wu-er-ling) sound phonetically similar to I love you (wo ai ni) in Mandarin.
    2. Mutton-fat jade (yangzhi yu, 羊脂玉) is a highly prized type of white nephrite jade in China, characterized by its translucent, creamy color and smooth texture, frequently used in literature to describe flawless skin.
