    The Truth Unveiled

For the rest of the journey, Song Qingpei and Ming Yu did not say another word.

Song Qingpei quietly observed Ming Yu. Her gaze kept darting away, feigning nonchalance as she glanced out the hover car window, but her fingers subconsciously clutched the hem of her clothes, betraying her inner panic.

Ming Yu had never been good at lying, and her every action right now undoubtedly broadcasted the unease in her heart.

Song Qingpei privately surmised that whatever Old Marshal Song had kept Ming Yu behind to discuss in private had to be highly unusual. It absolutely couldn’t just be a simple military matter. It was far more likely to be connected to her own originsโ€”more accurately, closely linked to her adoptive mother.

Based on what she had previously heard from Song Xihan, she was almost entirely certain that her adoptive mother was the former Second Miss of the Song family, Song Zhuohua. But why? Why would a pampered daughter of a prestigious family take her to live in seclusion on a Garbage Planet for so many years? And why had she vanished so inexplicably later on?

Murong Ruixue’s deliberate approach, Wu Lan’s relentless investigation into Black Kiteโ€”all these intersecting clues formed a tight net that shrouded her origins layer by layer, making it all the more mysterious and unfathomable.

Song Qingpei parted her lips, her voice strained. “Ming Yu, no matter what it is, don’t keep it from me, okay?”

Ming Yu hesitated, the words dying on her lips.

She thought of how they had finally reconciled after weathering so many storms. Song Qingpei had only just opened her heart to her, and their time together had become so vibrant and sweet. She truly did not want anything to force them back into their past coldness and alienation.

Yet, this matter was not trivial. It involved not only Song Qingpei’s lineage, but also the power struggles of the entire Federation. If Song Qingpei truly was Rong Cen’s daughter, with the Zhan family currently holding absolute power, she would inevitably be dragged into a dangerous vortex.

Ming Yu’s fingers tightened slightly, her knuckles turning white. She opened her mouth, wanting to confess, but felt as though there were thousands of tangled threads with no clear place to begin. Song Qingpei’s parentage, the grievances of the older generation, the Federation’s hidden power battlesโ€ฆ All of it felt like a crushing mountain bearing down on her, leaving her breathless.

“Qingpeiโ€ฆ” Her voice was hoarse and laced with difficulty. “Give me some time, okay? I will tell you everything, justโ€ฆ now is not the right time.”

Song Qingpei’s heart sank heavily. Ming Yu’s reaction only made her more certain that the situation was far more complex than she had imagined.

She turned her head, her gaze locked onto the side of Ming Yu’s face, trying to glean the truth from her expression. But though Ming Yu’s face remained calm, a deep struggle and apprehension flickered in the depths of her eyes.

“Ming Yu, I’m not afraid of knowing the truth,” Song Qingpei said softly, yet her tone rang with resolve. “No matter what it is, I can accept it. I only askโ€ฆ that you don’t hide it from me.”

Ming Yu’s throat felt as though it had been blocked. She fought to keep her voice steady. “Qingpei, I understand your concern, but right nowโ€ฆ it really can’t be explained in just a few words. Believe me, when the time is right, I will tell you everything from beginning to end.”

After a long pause, Song Qingpei slowly nodded, her voice low. “Alright. I believe you.”

Though her words carried a trace of helplessness, they were also full of trust in Ming Yu.

She knew very well that Ming Yu was not someone who concealed things lightly. If she chose not to speak, she must have her reasons. It was just that this feeling of being kept in the dark still left a lingering ache of discomfort in her heart.

The hover car slowly pulled into their home. The heavy atmosphere inside the cabin persisted.

The moment the two of them stepped out of the vehicle, Song Song flew out like a joyful little bird, her small face radiating a brilliant smile.

    “Mama! Mommy! You’re finally back!”

Song Song ran up to them, tipping her small face upward, her eyes brimming with anticipation. “Was the banquet fun? Was there yummy food?”

Song Qingpei forced a small smile. She crouched down and gently stroked Song Song’s head. “The banquet was a lot of fun, and there was so much yummy food. Marshal Song is amazing, and she even talked to us.”

Song Song excitedly grabbed Song Qingpei’s hand. “Really? Mama, hurry and tell me! Is Marshal Grandma even stronger than Mommy? Like a big hero?”

Looking at her daughter’s innocent face, the heavy weight in Song Qingpei’s chest eased slightly. She said softly, “That’s right. Marshal Song is just like a big hero, wearing her military uniform with medals covering her chest, looking so majestic.”

Song Song listened with rapt attention, absolute adoration washing over her small face. “Wow! When I grow up, I’m going to drive a mech and be a big hero just like Marshal Grandma and Mommy!”

Ming Yu stood off to the side, watching the mother and daughter interact, though her own heart remained turbulent.

She managed a smile and said to Song Song, “Song Song, it’s getting late. It’s time for bed, you have kindergarten tomorrow.”

Song Song pouted, thoroughly reluctant. “But I still want to hear Mama tell stories.”

Ming Yu crouched down, softening her voice. “How about we tell them tomorrow? Mama is tired today, let’s let her rest first.”

Song Song nodded obediently. “Okay. Then goodnight, Mama. Goodnight, Mommy.”

“Goodnight, Song Song,” Song Qingpei said softly, watching Song Song head inside.

Once Song Song was gone, Ming Yu looked toward Song Qingpei, her voice gentle. “Qingpei, you’re tired too. Go rest. I’ll go coax Song Song to sleep.”

Song Qingpei nodded. Without another word, she turned and headed toward the bedroom.

Ming Yu gazed at her retreating back, a sharp wave of sorrow rising in her heart.

She knew her secrecy had already caused a rift in their relationship, but she had no other choice right now. If she told Song Qingpei the truth at this moment, and Qingpei did something irreversible out of impulse, neither she nor Marshal Song would necessarily be able to protect her.

Ming Yu let out a long sigh and walked into Song Song’s room.

Song Song was already lying obediently in bed, blinking up at her.

    “Mommy, is Mama mad?”

Ming Yu sat on the edge of the bed, gently stroking Song Song’s hair. “No, Mama is just tired. Don’t think too much, hurry up and sleep.”

Song Song nodded and closed her eyes.

Ming Yu sat by the bed, gently patting Song Song’s back until her breathing leveled out and she drifted into dreamland.

Once Song Song was fast asleep, Ming Yu carefully stood up and left the room.

She stood in the corridor for a moment, her eyes falling upon Song Qingpei’s bedroom door, thoroughly torn.

Eventually, she couldn’t resist. She walked over to Song Qingpei’s door and pushed it open with a light touch.

The bedroom was dim. Only the moonlight from the window spilled across the floorboards, casting a silvery-white glow.

Song Qingpei lay on the bed with her back to the door, appearing to already be asleep.

Ming Yu tiptoed to the bedside and slowly lay down, gently wrapping her arms around Song Qingpei from behind. Her movements were incredibly soft, terrified of waking her.

The night was deep, and the room was so quiet that only the sound of their intertwined breathing could be heard.

Song Qingpei lay on her side, her fingers unconsciously gripping the edge of the blanket. She could feel Ming Yu behind her, but even though they were holding each other, it felt as though an invisible wall stood between them, and neither was willing to break the silence.

Both tossed and turned through the night, unable to find sleep.

By morning, sunlight streamed into the room through the gaps in the curtains.

Ming Yu woke up early. Looking at Song Qingpei, who was still asleep, her heart was laden with guilt.

She got up quietly, left the bedroom, and went to the kitchen, intending to prepare breakfast herself to ease the tension between them. But in her distracted state, she nearly knocked over a glass of milk.

Song Song came downstairs rubbing her sleepy eyes, asking in a milky voice, “Mommy, what’s wrong? Did you not sleep well?”

Ming Yu snapped back to reality and offered a forced smile. “Mommy is fine. Go wash up, Song Song, we’ll have breakfast soon.”

Song Song obediently ran off to wash up. Ming Yu stared at her little back and sighed inwardly.

After putting together a simple breakfast, she sat at the dining table, entirely devoid of appetite.

Song Qingpei walked out of the bedroom and saw Ming Yu sitting at the table with a haggard expression. Her own heart twisted uncomfortably. She walked to the table, sat down, picked up a piece of bread, and slowly took a bite, but it tasted like ash in her mouth.

    The atmosphere remained stifling.

Song Song looked at her mama, then peeked at her mommy, and whispered, “Mama, Mommy, you guys are being so weird today.”

Ming Yu and Song Qingpei exchanged a look, squeezed out matching smiles, and offered Song Song a few words of comfort.

After sending Song Song to school, Ming Yu awkwardly used the excuse of an upcoming scheduled medical exam. “Qingpei, Li Man is coming over later to give me my routine checkup. Do you want to stay and get a physical done together?”

Her voice was stiff and unnatural. Song Qingpei instantly understood there was something fishy going on here.

Although she had promised Ming Yu she would trust her, Song Qingpei still felt a measure of dissatisfaction over her secrets. She couldn’t help but deliberately prod, “If I don’t say yes today, are you going to come up with another excuse to get my physical done?”

    “Qingpei, Iโ€ฆ”

Ming Yu looked at her in a panic, visibly on edge. She clearly wanted to explain, but her lips parted and closed several times without a single word coming out.

Seeing her looking so agonizingly conflicted, Song Qingpei couldn’t help but feel bad for her.

Forget it. Since she had promised, she would give her some time.

Song Qingpei relented. “Alright. Then let’s do it.”

Ming Yu stared at her in shock, seemingly not having expected her to agree so easily. Once she recovered, she hurriedly used the excuse of contacting Li Man to avoid any further questioning.

Seeing this, Song Qingpei didn’t say anything more. She simply walked quietly to the dining table, picked up a glass of water, and took a small sip.

About half an hour later, Li Man arrived.

“Admiral, shall we begin?” she asked, looking at Ming Yu.

Ming Yu glanced tentatively at Song Qingpei. Song Qingpei was completely fed up with her acting like a cowed little wife and said directly, “Military Doctor Li, examine me first. I’m in a rush to get to work.”

Hearing this, Li Man adjusted her equipment and began performing a routine examination on her.

Song Qingpei cooperated, extending her arm, but her gaze never left Ming Yu. She watched her standing to the side, looking utterly tense, her palms unconsciously clenchingโ€”clearly a nervous wreck.

Her heart sank further. She became increasingly convinced that the truth was likely going to be a massive, thorny problem.

After finishing the routine exam, Li Man specifically drew a vial of blood.

Song Qingpei stared at the sample of bright red blood, her eyes flickering. Connecting the blood draw to her parentage made the purpose almost self-evident.

Seeing her brows furrow tightly, Ming Yu rushed forward to soothe her. “Qingpeiโ€ฆ”

Before she could even start, Song Qingpei said testily, “If you don’t know how to lie, stop making excuses. I’ll wait for you. I’ll wait for the day you’re willing to tell me everything.”

With that, she turned and left the living room.

Ming Yu watched her walk away, the sour ache in her chest growing sharper.

She knew Song Qingpei was giving her time, but she knew even better that she had to act quickly, or the distance between them would only grow further apart.

Once Song Qingpei had left, she immediately contacted Marshal Song.

Not long after, a cryogenically preserved blood sample was delivered to Ming Yu’s hands.

She gripped it tightly, her fingertips icy, feeling as though she were clutching a bomb that could detonate at any moment.

Ming Yu handed the sample to Li Man, her voice low and urgent. “Run a DNA test immediately. As fast as possible.”

The wait was long and torturous.

Ming Yu sat outside the laboratory, her hands clasped together, her knuckles turning white. Song Qingpei’s face kept flashing through her mindโ€”the trust and reliance in those eyes, while she had chosen to hide the truth time and time again.

Finally, Li Man walked out of the laboratory, clutching the test report.

Ming Yu shot to her feet, her gaze fixed entirely on the report, her heart pounding like a drum.

Li Man handed the document to her, her tone perfectly level. “Admiral, the results show that the two subjects possess a kinship relation.”

Ming Yu’s eyes locked onto the conclusion. The kinship was confirmedโ€”Song Qingpei was unequivocally of the Song family bloodline, the daughter of Former President Rong Cen and Song Taoyao.

Her thoughts spun into chaos. If Song Qingpei’s identity were exposed, how could Zhan Li ever let her go?

Back then, to seize power, Zhan Li had orchestrated a scheme to frame Former President Rong Cen for treason, personally driving her into a dead end. Now that Rong Cen’s daughter was known to be alive, he would absolutely stop at nothing to eliminate her.

Ming Yu’s fists clenched tight. She absolutely could not let Song Qingpei face that danger. Yet Zhan Li’s informants were scattered all across the Federation; a single misstep would plunge them into an abyss of no return. How could she keep her safe?

Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to calm down.

The most critical priority right now was to stabilize the situation. No one could be allowed to realize Song Qingpei’s identity.

She had to contact Old Marshal Song immediately to discuss countermeasures.

Ming Yu suddenly gripped the report tightly, her voice low and urgent. “Military Doctor Li, this matter absolutely cannot be leaked. Do you understand?”

Li Man nodded quickly. “I understand.”

However, Ming Yu did not know that the moment Li Man walked away, she dialed a number and whispered, “Ruixue, Song Qingpei’s identity has been exposed. Initiate the operation immediately.”

Ming Yu rushed to Marshal Song’s residence with hurried, frantic steps, her usual composed calmness long gone.

She pushed open the study door. Marshal Song was sitting behind the desk, her expression heavy as she gazed out the window, deep in thought.

“Marshal Song.” Ming Yu’s voice was hoarse as she handed the DNA test report over. “The results are out.”

Marshal Song’s eyes swept over the pages. After a long while, she let out a long sigh. “Just as I expected.”

Ming Yu’s breathing was ragged. She asked quietly, “What do we do now? If Qingpei’s identity gets out, Zhan Li will never let her live.”

Marshal Song remained silent for a moment before standing up. “Ming Yu, this matter must be suppressed. If Qingpei’s identity is leaked, not only will she be unable to protect herself, but the entire Federation’s political landscape will be thrown into turmoil.”

Ming Yu hesitated. “Butโ€ฆ Qingpei has the right to know the truth.”

“Ming Yu, calm yourself.” Marshal Song’s gaze was sharp and unyielding. “The moment Qingpei’s identity is exposed, Zhan Li will pay any price to get rid of her. Can you bear to watch her fall into such danger? Right now, the absolute priority is to protect her, not drag her into the maelstrom.”

A flicker of conflict flashed through Ming Yu’s eyes, her voice laced with pain. “Butโ€ฆ I don’t want to lie to her. She’s already noticed something is wrong. I’m afraid she will lose all trust in me.”

Marshal Song lightly patted her shoulder, her tone helpless. “Ming Yu, I know you are caught in a dilemma. But now is not the time to be ruled by emotion. Qingpei’s safety is paramount. You absolutely cannot let anyone realize who she is.”

Ming Yu lowered her head. A boulder seemed to crush her chest, suffocating her.

She understood that Marshal Song’s words made sense, but whenever she thought of Song Qingpei saying she trusted her, her heart ached as if it were being sliced by a knife.

Just then, Ming Yu’s communicator suddenly rang.

She looked down. It was actually Wu Lan? Why would she be contacting her at a time like this?

Ming Yu immediately went on high alert. She steadied her breathing before answering the call.

“Admiral Ming, are you interested in making a deal?” Wu Lan’s voice drifted through the communicator, carrying a meaningful chuckle. “Regarding Song Qingpei’s parentage.”

Ming Yu forced down the shock in her heart and struggled to keep her voice even. “Wu Lan, what are you talking about?”

Wu Lan let out a soft laugh. “Admiral Ming, drop the act. You and I both know exactly what Song Qingpei’s identity is. So, do you want to meet up?”

Ming Yu’s fingers gripped the communicator so tightly her knuckles cracked. Her mind was a mess of chaos. How could Wu Lan possibly know about this?

She took a deep breath. “Fine. Where do we meet?”

“My hospital room.” Wu Lan’s voice still held that smile. “I’ll be waiting.”

Hanging up the call, Ming Yu’s expression darkened into gloom.

Wu Lan discovering this matter so quickly was completely outside her expectations. It felt like a vicious slap across the face, telling her in no uncertain terms that Song Qingpei’s origins had already been leaked.

Marshal Song watched her, her brows equally furrowed. “Wu Lan is Zhan Li’s lackey. Her asking you to negotiate a deal is likely a Hongmen Banquet1. You must be careful.”

“I know.” Ming Yu nodded, her voice low. “But since Wu Lan already knows Qingpei’s identity, I have to go see her and test the waters.”

“Wu Lan is insidious and cunning. Make absolutely sure you do not let her catch you with any leverage,” Marshal Song warned.

Ming Yu nodded, turned, and left the study, her steps even more hurried than before.

Wu Lan’s sudden intervention made an already unpredictable situation entirely volatile. She didn’t know exactly how much information Wu Lan possessed, nor what she was scheming, but no matter what, she had to keep Song Qingpei safe.

Song Qingpei sat in her office at the company. She flipped through the documents in her hands, but she simply couldn’t focus.

Ming Yu’s hesitant, conflicted face kept flashing through her mind, leaving a lingering trace of unease in her heart. Ever since she had seen that family portrait at Marshal Song’s birthday banquet, a heavy weight had pressed down on her chest, a burden she couldn’t shake off.

“Qingpei, what are you thinking about?” A familiar voice drifted in from the doorway.

Song Qingpei looked up and saw Murong Ruixue standing in the doorway, a gentle smile on her face.

“Ruixue-jie?” Song Qingpei was slightly surprised. “Why are you here?”

Murong Ruixue walked into the office and placed a file on her desk. “The AI brain of the ‘Yuyue’ has shown new fluctuations. I think this is an opportunity. I wanted to ask you to go take another look.”

“The ‘Yuyue’?” Song Qingpei frowned. “Didn’t we conclude before that its computer had gone into dormancy and couldn’t be repaired for the time being?”

Murong Ruixue smiled, an inscrutable glint flashing through her eyes. “Perhaps your mental strength possesses a high level of compatibility with it. I think this might be a breakthrough. We might be able to wake it up.”

Song Qingpei instinctively sensed danger. She vaguely felt that Murong Ruixue might be deliberately testing her.

But her thirst for the truth drove her to take the risk anyway. She nodded. “Alright. I’ll go with you.”

The two drove toward the mech base.

Along the way, Murong Ruixue shot occasional glances at Song Qingpei, as if observing her reactions.

Song Qingpei kept her gaze fixed out the window, the unease in her heart growing. She kept feeling that there was something wrong with Murong Ruixue today, but she couldn’t put her finger on exactly what it was.

Upon arriving at the base, Murong Ruixue punched in the passcode, and the heavy metal doors slowly rolled open.

Song Qingpei walked inside. The ‘Yuyue’ still stood silently in the center of the warehouse, its chassis gleaming with a cold metallic luster.

“Qingpei, try using your mental strength to probe the AI brain first. Let’s see if you can wake it up again,” Murong Ruixue said, standing behind her, her tone carrying a hint of urgency.

Song Qingpei nodded. She slipped into a protective suit, took a deep breath, and slowly released her mental strength.

Her mental strength acted like a delicate thread, slowly seeping into the AI brain core.

At first, everything was completely still. The AI brain core was like a dead, silent abyss with no reaction whatsoever.

“Go a little deeper,” Murong Ruixue’s voice urged from behind, sounding eager.

Song Qingpei frowned, her unease spiking.

But her mental strength was already deep inside the AI brain core; she couldn’t afford to get distracted now.

Right at the moment her mental strength was about to brush against the AI brain core, a powerful suction force suddenly erupted, yanking her mental strength violently inside.

Her vision went entirely black. The next second, chaotic, fractured images exploded into her mind once more.

In the vast expanse of starry space, a silver mech wove through the void like a shooting star.

Inside the mech’s cockpit, a woman with heroic features was piloting the machine with absolute, unwavering focus.

However, in the very next second, the scene drastically shifted.

Countless enemy mechs swarmed from all directions. The woman fought back fiercely, but she was ultimately hopelessly outnumbered.

The mech took a direct hit. Blood splattered across the interior of the cockpit, and the woman’s silhouette began to blurโ€ฆ

“No!” Song Qingpei yelled out by pure instinct, her heart aching so fiercely she could barely breathe.

Her mental strength drained away rapidly, and her consciousness began to blur. Just then, she suddenly felt a chill creeping up from behind her.

Her eyes snapped open. She realized Murong Ruixue was standing right behind her, pressing the muzzle of a tranquilizer gun firmly against her lower back.

    “Ruixue-jie, youโ€ฆ” Song Qingpei’s voice trembled.

A flash of struggle passed through Murong Ruixue’s eyes, but it was quickly replaced by resolute finality. “Qingpei, I’m sorryโ€ฆ I have to do this.”

Song Qingpei’s mind was in utter turmoil, but she rapidly forced herself to calm down. She had noticed Murong Ruixue’s odd behavior long before this; though she was weak right now, she had come prepared.

Her finger quietly pressed the emergency button on her protective suit, and she swiftly retreated, dodging Murong Ruixue’s impending attack.

“Murong Ruixue, what exactly are you trying to do?!” Song Qingpei’s voice was laced with anger and confusion.

Pain flashed through Murong Ruixue’s eyes. “Qingpei, your identity has been exposed. I have to take you away, otherwise you will be in immense danger.”

Song Qingpei’s brows locked together. She demanded, “My identity? What on earth are you talking about?”

Murong Ruixue took a deep breath and said slowly, “Now that things have come to this, I won’t hide it from you anymore. Your mother is the former President of the Federationโ€”Rong Cen. She was framed for treason by Zhan Li back then. Black Kite is made up of her former subordinates. We have been trying to clear her name all this time. And youโ€ฆ you are the daughter of Rong Cen and Song Taoyao.”

Song Qingpei’s mind shattered into chaos. Murong Ruixue’s words echoed relentlessly through her headโ€”her mother was Rong Cen, the Former President of the Federation. And her adoptive mother, Song Yin, was actually Song Zhuohua, the Second Miss of the Song family.

She shook her head in sheer disbelief. “Impossibleโ€ฆ how could that be possible?”

All of this had come too suddenly. She couldn’t accept it at all.

“Qingpei, come with me!” Murong Ruixue’s voice was thick with desperation. “Your identity is already exposed! Zhan Li’s people will find you very soon! If you stay here, you’re only going to fall into danger!”

“Iโ€ฆ” Song Qingpei’s voice shook slightly. “How do you expect me to believe you? This is all too absurdโ€ฆ”

Murong Ruixue pleaded anxiously, “Qingpei, I know you can’t accept this right away. But it is the truth! Your adoptive mother, Song Yin, is Song Zhuohua! She took you into hiding on the Garbage Planet to protect you! And right now, she is being locked in a Military Secret Prison by Zhan Li, suffering endless torture! If you don’t believe me, I can show you the evidence!”

Saying this, Murong Ruixue pulled a tiny data chip from her chest pocket and held it out to Song Qingpei. “This is a video of your adoptive mother in captivity. Look at it yourself!”

Song Qingpei’s fingers trembled slightly as she took the chip and slotted it into her communicator.

A blurry piece of footage immediately flickered onto the screenโ€”a woman was locked inside a damp, gloomy cell, her body covered in wounds, her eyes utterly hollow with despair. Song Qingpei’s heart gave a violent shudder. Even though the woman’s face was gaunt and haggard, the bone structure was unmistakably identical to the adoptive mother in her memories.

“Auntieโ€ฆ” Song Qingpei’s voice choked on a sob, her eyes instantly turning red.

Her fingers clamped down on the communicator, her knuckles bleaching from the force.

Seeing this, Murong Ruixue immediately stepped forward, begging, “Qingpei, you believe me now, don’t you? Your identity is exposed, Zhan Li’s men will be coming for you soon. You must come with me.”

Song Qingpei’s mind was a mess of utter confusion, her heart overflowing with conflict and struggle. Her adoptive mother was still alive, and her own parentage was unimaginably complex.

She didn’t want to believe any of this, but the evidence right before her eyes made it impossible to deny.

With trembling hands, she raised her communicator, wanting to contact Ming Yu.

Murong Ruixue panicked and rushed to stop her. “Qingpei, you cannot contact Ming Yu! She and that Military Headquarters crowd are birds of a feather2! They won’t let you go!”

Song Qingpei’s fingers froze over the communicator, completely lost as to what to do next.

Just then, Murong Ruixue’s own communicator rang.

She glanced down, and her face instantly drained of all color.

She hurriedly turned to Song Qingpei. “Qingpei, we have to leave right now! The Bureau of Investigation is already here!”

Song Qingpei stood frozen, still entirely unable to recover from the shock.

Seeing her unresponsive and knowing how dire the situation was, Murong Ruixue could wait no longer.

Gritting her teeth, she raised the tranquilizer gun, leveled it at Song Qingpei, and decided to take her away by force.

But right at that moment, the base doors were violently shoved open, followed by a rush of rapid footsteps.

Song Qingpei snapped her head up and saw Ming Yu and Wu Lan charging in with a large group of people, swiftly surrounding them.

“Qingpei!” Ming Yu’s voice was laced with frantic urgency. Her gaze was locked tightly onto Song Qingpei, her eyes brimming with worry. “Are you hurt?”

Song Qingpei remained rooted to the spot. She looked at Ming Yu, a sliver of pleading in her eyes. “Ming Yu, what exactly is going on here?”

Ming Yu’s expression was incredibly complex. She said quietly, “Qingpei, don’t act on impulse. Let’s go back first, and we’ll talk.”

Catching her hidden meaning, Song Qingpei hesitated for a brief second and did not press the issue further.

Murong Ruixue looked between the two of them. Driven by desperation, she yelled, “Qingpei, do not trust her! They are all in this together!”

“Shut up!” Ming Yu’s expression darkened to a level of gloom she had never shown before. She shot a look at Wu Lan. “Director Wu, what are you standing around for?”

Wu Lan’s face still looked slightly pale, but with new grudges piled upon the old, she looked at Murong Ruixue with absolute triumph. “Murong Ruixue, surrender quietly. You can’t escape this time.”

Murong Ruixue’s face was ashen, her eyes filled with despair. She knew she was done for. She wasn’t getting out of here.

Wu Lan let out a cold laugh and waved her hand. “Take her away.”

As she was being escorted away by the people from the Bureau of Investigation, Murong Ruixue yelled loudly, “Qingpei! Do not trust them!”

Song Qingpei stood perfectly still in the center of the warehouse, her heart feeling as though it were being ripped to pieces.

She looked at Ming Yu, her eyes overflowing with agony. “Ming Yu, why did you show up here with Wu Lan? Exactly how much have you been hiding from me?”

Ming Yu’s lips trembled slightly, but for a moment she did not know where to begin. In the end, she could only hold Song Qingpei to soothe her.

“Qingpei, let’s go home first, and I will tell you everything.”
