    Awkward

Ming Yu grit her teeth at those words, seething with anger. That wasn’t what she meant at all.

Besides, she had been so forward, and Song Qingpei still injected an inhibitor? What more did she want from her?

Proud as Ming Yu was, that impulsive kiss had already been her limit. Naturally, she couldn’t bring herself to ask anything more now. In that brief moment of hesitation, Song Qingpei had already finished injecting the inhibitor.

She turned back to look at Ming Yu. Ming Yu’s expression remained cold.

Song Qingpei could sense that if not for the Mental Imprint1 forcing Ming Yu to remain so dominant and unwilling to yield, her face right now would be as colorful as a palette.

“What’s wrong? Admiral Ming’s heat period should be over by now, yet you’re still like this… truly puzzling.”

Song Qingpei was doing it deliberately. She wanted Ming Yu to acknowledge her true self, to let her know that the Mental Imprint wasn’t immovable, that she could become that former ‘Mengmeng’ at any time without needing hypnosis or drunkenness as an excuse.

Of course, she didn’t want ‘Mengmeng’ β€” she wanted Ming Yu to accept her real self.

But to Ming Yu’s ears, those words sounded like Song Qingpei saying: “See? I can control myself during my susceptible period! You’re an Admiral, and your heat period is over, yet you’re still this unstable.”

Ming Yu bit her lower lip, thinking about these past few days and all the methods she’d tried.

From the beginning, she’d hypnotized herself into ‘Mengmeng,’ then gone to Song Xiaorou to buy those clothes, and today β€” she hadn’t come, so Ming Yu had gone to her instead. Yet from start to finish, she hadn’t softened Song Qingpei’s heart one bit.

    Frustration. Shame. Anger. Resentment!

Even when facing enemy forces, even when laser cannons had pierced through her mech, she’d never felt this powerless. The emotions were indescribable β€” all tangled together, making her throat ache with bitterness. Uncontrollable fury seemed poised on the edge of eruption.

But then Song Qingpei said: “Forget it. Let’s not talk about this anymore. Go to sleep.”

And just like that, most of her anger evaporated.

In that instant, Ming Yu knew she was completely done for. Song Qingpei’s simple words could determine her mood. Her gaze flickered, uncertain what to say.

Seeing Ming Yu standing there like a post, silent, Song Qingpei was truly exhausted. She could only pat the bed helplessly and urge her again: “Sleep. If we don’t sleep now, it’ll be dawn soon.”

She told her to sleep, so she should sleep? Hah! Ming Yu pressed her lips together and turned to leave.

But she’d already reached the door, and still no sound of Song Qingpei trying to stop her. Her anger surged again. She turned back β€” only to find Song Qingpei had already rolled over, turning her back to sleep.

Ming Yu was so angry she almost laughed! The other person was already asleep β€” what was the point of her being awkward all by herself?

She watched her feet turn, circling back into the room. She walked to the other side of the bed and lay down. Now Song Qingpei’s breathing was right in her ear. She frowned, but in the end, couldn’t resist turning over to face Song Qingpei.

She closed her eyes and fell asleep immediately!

    A night without dreams.

The next morning, Ming Yu woke first. Seeing her octopus-like sleeping posture, she awkwardly and slowly retracted her limbs.

But just as she was about to pull her arm back, Song Qingpei’s eyelashes fluttered β€” she was awake. Ming Yu quickly withdrew her hand, then calmly rose, turning her back to Song Qingpei as she started dressing.

Noticing Ming Yu’s awkwardness, Song Qingpei knew the Admiral’s pride had taken another hit. She wisely chose not to provoke her, silently putting on her own clothes and leaving the room together with Ming Yu.

Downstairs, they found Songsong already awake, sitting at the dining table with her lips pursed.

When she saw Song Qingpei come down, she pouted angrily, not even calling “Mama.”

Because Mama had snuck away last night while she was sleeping, not staying with her. Hateful.

But when she saw Ming Yu behind Song Qingpei, her eyes spun with calculation: “Mama, Mama! You didn’t sleep with me last night β€” did you sleep with Mommy?”

Children spoke without filter, and her voice was especially loud. Now all the servants were looking their way.

Song Qingpei shot a guilty glance at Ming Yu, inwardly groaning. This little one β€” why did she blurt out everything?

Ming Yu’s expression remained normal, but she felt uncomfortable inside. Thinking about how she’d gone to Song Qingpei again last night, she felt embarrassed, and her expression darkened.

She took a deep breath, struggling to stay calm as she walked over to Songsong and gently picked her up. “Why haven’t you eaten breakfast?”

Songsong wrapped her arms around Ming Yu’s neck, speaking in her milky voice: “Waiting for Mama and Mommy.”

Then she turned to look at Song Qingpei. “Mama, yesterday kindergarten taught us a new game, and you haven’t played it with me yet.”

Ming Yu thought of yesterday’s embarrassing scene, her face warming slightly. She silently resolved to dispose of those items as soon as possible β€” it would be terrible if Songsong accidentally saw them.

She smiled at Songsong. “I’ll play with you tonight when I get back. It’s almost the weekend β€” I can play with you then. We can play whatever you want.”

Songsong’s eyes lit up with joy.

But suddenly, she seemed to remember something, and she looked mysteriously at Butler Su.

Butler Su understood immediately, bringing over a box and handing it to Songsong.

Songsong held the box β€” which was almost as big as she was β€” with both hands, struggling to hand it to Ming Yu. Her face was full of anticipation: “Mommy, this is for you!”

Ming Yu felt quite happy at the sight.

This was the first time her daughter had given her a gift β€” and of her own initiative, too.

“Wow, a gift for Mommy? I have to open it and see.” She reached out to unwrap the box.

Song Qingpei moved quickly, pressing her hand on the box. “Let’s eat first. A gift is about the sentiment β€” the longer you anticipate it, the happier you’ll be when you open it.”

She was mainly worried this was Songsong’s compensation gift to Ming Yu β€” those cat ears. If that set Ming Yu off again, it would be a disaster.

Ming Yu realized what it might be too. Though her face remained expressionless, her ears quietly reddened, and she suppressed the urge to open the gift.

But Songsong wasn’t having it. She pouted and whined: “Giving gifts is supposed to make the person happy! Isn’t Mommy happy?”

“Happy, happy! Mommy’s very happy.” Ming Yu hurriedly replied.

Songsong pressed her advantage: “Then open it now! This is Songsong’s first time giving Mommy a gift β€” it has to be opened today!”

Ming Yu pursed her lips. She couldn’t refuse Songsong, so she opened the box.

Thinking that even if it was cat ears, it didn’t matter β€” no one else would know anyway.

But inside was a painting β€” drawn in wobbly, crooked lines.

Ming Yu stared at it for a long moment before pointing at a blob of strange reddish color: “Is this a carrot? And this gray one… is it a rabbit?”

Ming Yu thought she’d guessed correctly and quickly added: “So Songsong drew a rabbit pulling up carrots?”

As soon as she finished, she saw Songsong’s mouth quiver, her eyes instantly reddening.

Ming Yu panicked β€” what was wrong? She’d never been good at comforting children, but she instinctively pulled Songsong into her arms, trying to soothe her the way she’d seen Song Qingpei do.

But Songsong pushed against her unhappily, calling out: “Mama, Mama…”

Song Qingpei hurried over and took Songsong from Ming Yu’s arms.

She gently patted Songsong’s back while looking at Ming Yu with a mix of amusement and helplessness, explaining: “Um, cough, Songsong drew our family of three.”

Ming Yu looked at the painting again. She still couldn’t quite make sense of it.

Song Qingpei continued: “The red carrot is your mech. The gray rabbit is because I usually wear silver-gray work clothes. The green one in the middle… because they say children are the saplings of the future, so…”

Before Song Qingpei could finish, Songsong cried even louder.

Song Qingpei quickly comforted her: “Baby, don’t blame Mommy. Mommy’s seeing your drawing for the first time too. We left in such a hurry β€” we didn’t bring all your artwork. Otherwise, Mommy would have known.”

Hearing this, Ming Yu felt something block up in her chest β€” a suffocating feeling.

Back then, she’d only been focused on getting her daughter back, wanting to resolve things quickly. She hadn’t thought about any of this.

But saying anything now didn’t seem quite right.

“Songsong.” Ming Yu’s voice lowered. “Mommy really doesn’t know you well enough yet. But give Mommy time to get to know you, okay?”

Song Qingpei was somewhat surprised β€” she hadn’t expected the ever-proud Ming Yu to soften like this.

Hearing her words, Songsong gradually stopped crying.

After the family of three finished breakfast, Ming Yu personally drove Songsong to school β€” out of guilt β€” before heading to Military Headquarters.

Song Qingpei arrived at work early today. But when she reached the company, she found Murong Ruixue was already there, intently studying a combat mech blueprint.

Looking closely, it was the same mech she hadn’t finished studying before she fainted last time.

Song Qingpei walked over and asked curiously: “Is it fixed?”

Murong Ruixue looked up, a faint smile on her face. “Yes, it’s fixed.”

She set the blueprint aside. “Did you finish the materials I gave you yesterday?”

Song Qingpei quickly answered: “I did. So I came straight to find you, Ruixue-jie β€” are we continuing with practical training?”

She was walking into this deliberately, so her initiative wasn’t excessive.

Murong Ruixue had wanted to get close to Song Qingpei all along. Hearing this, she felt a pang of melancholy.

She was conflicted now β€” she knew the mission had to be completed, but she didn’t want to hurt someone who genuinely treated her well.

Suppressing her emotions, she nodded calmly and said: “That old ‘Flying Bird’ model mech is the only one of its kind here. But there’s another, more precise one called the Yuyue β€” it’s a stealth combat mech. Let’s go look at that one. Come with me.”

Song Qingpei was surprised: “It’s not here?”

Murong Ruixue pressed her lips together. In the end, she decided to complete the mission quickly.

So she nodded. “No, it’s not here.”

How could it be somewhere crowded? She needed a more private location to carry out the plan.

Song Qingpei pressed her lips together, instantly alert. She agreed verbally, but surreptitiously pressed a shortcut key on her light-terminal, sending a message to Ming Yu.
