    Them (Part 4)

Yan Xi stood at the doorway, gazing at Anzhi with a slight curl to her lips. She stepped closer, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face before gently tapping her nose.

Unaware of the attention, Anzhi merely twitched her dimples, sleeping soundly.

The smile on Yan Xi’s face widened as she caressed her cheek.

Suddenly, the sound of someone knocking on the door reached her ears. Yan Xi focused her attention and heard, “Anzhi? Anzhi, time to get up. Are you asleep? Wake up!”

Anzhi’s room was diagonally opposite Yan Xi’s. Composing herself, Yan Xi walked over and opened her door, only to find Auntie Xin knocking on Anzhi’s door.

    “Auntie Xin, what’s wrong?”

“Xiao Wu, is Anzhi asleep?” Auntie Xin turned to ask her.

Yan Xi instinctively blocked the doorway, pulling her door shut behind her back. She paused, blinking. “I suppose so. She’s likely asleep in her room.”

“I’m not entirely sure either…” she added.

Auntie Xin let out an acknowledging grunt. “I finished simmering the chicken soup. I wanted to wake her up to have a bowl; it wouldn’t be too late to sleep after that.” As she spoke, she moved as if to push open the door.

Yan Xi quickly called out a step ahead to stop her. “Wait, Auntie Xin, it’s better to let her sleep. She’s still jet-lagged. To her, it’s currently the middle of the night.”

Auntie Xin gave it some thought. “True. You should come downstairs and help make dinner, then. We should get it done while the babies are asleep; otherwise, once they wake up, it’ll be chaotic again.”

Yan Xi paused for a second. Truly unable to think of an excuse to decline, she could only nod. “Alright, let’s go downstairs then.”

Auntie Xin thought her expression seemed a bit strange, though she couldn’t quite put her finger on why. Hearing her response, she chuckled and said, “Xiao Wu, you need to change your clothes first. How are you going to step into the kitchen in those clothes?”

Yan Xi had come straight home from work at the TV station, still wearing her formal light blue fitted blazer and matching straight-cut skirt, with a black turtleneck wool sweater underneath.

Yan Xi’s face stiffened almost imperceptibly. “Then you go on down first, Auntie Xin. I’ll be down in a moment.”

Auntie Xin was slightly baffled. “I was already preparing to head down anyway. What do you mean by that?” She shook her head.

Only after watching her turn toward the stairs did Yan Xi breathe a sigh of relief and step back into the room. She changed into casual clothes and, unable to resist, walked back to the bedside. Unaffected by their conversation, Anzhi’s soft, delicate eyelashes remained closed, her breathing light and even—she was sleeping so soundly.

Brushing back her hair, Yan Xi murmured, “Now I can’t even let anyone find you in my bed…” The moment the words left her mouth, she paused. It seemed she couldn’t put it that way anymore, either.

She rubbed her forehead, leaned down to plant a soft kiss on her cheek, and watched her for a little longer before finally rising to leave.

By the time Anzhi woke up, it was already dinner time. She stretched, her entire body suffused with a comfortable, cozy languor.

Scanning her surroundings, she didn’t see Yan Xi, but she wasn’t upset. She fell back onto the bed, lingering in the warmth of Yan Xi’s duvet for a moment before slowly getting up to head downstairs.

The living room downstairs was brightly lit. There was the rise and fall of babies crying, Auntie Xin’s gentle and loving cooing, and Junjun whining coaxingly to Xiao Yutong.

    It was incredibly lively.

It was the kind of bustle unique to a large family—bringing a sense of comfort, but also a hint of worry. She didn’t want to disrupt this rare, simple warmth of everyday life.

At the dinner table, Anzhi and Yan Xi could only exchange secret glances, their unspoken words passing between their eyes.

After dinner, they finally found an opportunity to be alone together—washing the dishes. Although the old residence had a dishwasher, Anzhi volunteered to wash them by hand, and Yan Xi naturally nodded and offered to keep her company. The others didn’t think anything of it, assuming the two of them simply wanted to escape the noisy infants.

Anzhi’s dimples pressed deep as she smiled while washing the dishes.

As long as she was with her, she could smile even without speaking.

“Can I sleep with you tonight?” Anzhi asked in a low voice.

Yan Xi paused, a hint of hesitation appearing in her expression.

Anzhi sensitively caught that split-second of hesitation. She blinked, asking softly, “Is that a no?”

“Mn… Let’s not do that while we’re here at home,” Yan Xi said softly, avoiding her gaze.

Anzhi was taken aback. She looked at Yan Xi, sensing the subtle resistance behind her words. Lowering her head, she pressed her lips together and only spoke after two seconds. “Alright.”

Hearing this, Yan Xi looked up at her several times. Still not reassured, she stepped a little closer and whispered, “Don’t overthink things.” Her tone was coaxing, laced with a touch of caution.

Anzhi raised her eyes and flashed her a smile. “Mn.”

After the dishes were washed, perhaps out of guilt or perhaps due to Yan Xi’s conscious or unconscious avoidance, they still failed to find any time to be alone.

The deep winter night was quiet and cold; everyone went to bed early. Before long, the old residence fell completely silent.

After hesitating in her room for a moment, Yan Xi ultimately couldn’t resist pushing open the door to Anzhi’s room.

Nestled in bed reading a book, Anzhi beamed the moment she saw her enter. Yan Xi wore a solid-colored cotton nightgown beneath a draped, violet-gray cashmere coat, her long, slender legs walking slowly over to her bed.

The underfloor heating made the room incredibly cozy and warm.

Anzhi lifted the duvet to let her slip in, then piled up the pillows toward the inside of the bed.

Having both showered, they leaned back comfortably, fresh and clean, as the familiar scent of gardenia lingered between them.

Yan Xi reached an arm over her shoulder, pulling her close as she spoke in a tender voice. “I didn’t mean anything by what I said earlier…” As she searched for the right words, Anzhi rested her head against her shoulder, tilting her small face up slightly. Her almond eyes blinked silently as she waited obediently.

Suddenly, Yan Xi found herself unable to say much more. She brushed her lips against Anzhi’s smooth forehead.

“Give me some time. You know Grandfather and Grandmother are getting on in years; I have to tell them slowly, to give them time to ease into it.”

It indeed should be this way, and Anzhi thought so too.

Anzhi said obediently, “I understand. It’s alright.”

Before she even arrived home, she had known that a new life was born in the old residence—especially a baby girl whom everyone had looked forward to for a long time. However, Grandfather Yan’s heart had always been poor; he was so happy upon hearing the news that he suddenly couldn’t catch his breath and almost fainted. As for Grandmother Yan, her mental state was getting worse and her memory was failing, to the point where she would sometimes fall asleep in the middle of speaking.

Yan Xi let out a low, tender sigh. “Good girl…”

“I want to spend more time with you,” Anzhi said, looking at her. The clinging affection in her eyes was impossible to hide, and as her dimples deepened, it made one’s heart soften just looking at her.

“I know.” Yan Xi leaned in, affectionately kissing her dimple. Anzhi’s face grew hot, but her arms reached up in time to wrap around Yan Xi’s neck, seeking her lips.

Yan Xi’s heart trembled as a gentle warmth touched her lips. Anzhi kept her eyes closed shyly, pressing soft, fluttering pecks against her mouth.

Passionate yet shy, cautious and tender—it was still clumsy and entirely unpracticed, but Yan Xi was already helpless to resist. Brushing aside her hair, she kissed her back.

Yan Xi took her lips in her own, gently rubbing them before nudging past her teeth. Anzhi’s face flushed a deep crimson as she instinctively slid her tongue forward in silent understanding. Their tongues met and tangled, steadily growing more heated.

Yan Xi leaned her weight forward, naturally pressing her down onto the duvet as she softly, slowly kissed and sucked on her lips.

Anzhi’s slender, delicate fingers unconsciously caressed Yan Xi’s neck, brushing back her hair.

For a period of time—they couldn’t tell how long—the room remained silent, save for the soft sound of light pecks, followed by faint, quiet sighs and soft pants.

Anzhi didn’t last long before losing the strength to keep up with Yan Xi. She collapsed softly onto the duvet, feeling completely lightheaded as her hands slid down, though she still clutched adorably at the front of her gown.

Her fine, soft eyelashes were damp as she panted weakly, “Auntie…”

Yan Xi sucked on her lip with a bit more force, her breath burning hot. “Good girl, Taotao, you can’t call me that anymore…”

    “…I can’t?”

    “…”

Such an address brought a mental burden, preventing her from kissing her openly. Yet, it also carried a different kind of hidden, unspeakable… pleasure and thrill.

Yan Xi’s thoughts were completely in disarray, but the physical sensations were incredibly real. Her heart was hammering, as was Anzhi’s, and the two soft mounds on the girl’s chest trembled gently. They had a strong presence and felt incredibly playful, as if inviting hers to tremble along with them.

Everything was a completely new sensation.

It turned out that a woman’s body and another woman’s body could meet and touch each other in this way.

When they finally parted, Anzhi lay limply in the crook of her arm, without even the strength to open her eyes.

Yan Xi pressed her cheek against hers, her breathing gradually slowing.

Her gaze fixed on her pink cheeks and soft, pale neck. She wore a baby-doll nightdress with a low, semi-circular neckline; those two round, tender mounds were incredibly enticing.

Yan Xi used to know her measurements, but now she figured they might have grown by another cup size, perhaps even a bit more.

A flush of embarrassed pink rose to her face. Suppressing the urge to physically verify it, she pulled the duvet over to cover Anzhi’s body.

When Anzhi opened her eyes, she looked at the duvet pulled over her chest in a daze, blinking in confusion.

Yan Xi’s throat bobbed. Turning her slightly reddened face away, she patted her reassuringly.

Just as Anzhi was about to say something, the sudden sound of a baby crying rang out from far outside the door. First, one baby started crying, and then the other joined in as well.

To avoid disturbing Grandfather and Grandmother Yan on the second floor, the nursery was located on the same third floor as their rooms, over on the opposite side of the living room. Even so, the piercing wails of the infants sounded exceptionally loud in the quiet night.

Next came Auntie Xin’s cooing, followed by Xiao Yutong trying to soothe them. It seemed the children wouldn’t stop crying, prompting them to carry them out into the living area, which brought the noise much closer. After a moment, Yu Shengnan’s slightly weary voice rang out: “Aren’t they full yet?”

“It’s fine, go on back to sleep. You’ve been working all day.”

“Ah, but why won’t they stop crying…”

“Don’t worry about it. Go sleep, I’ll just mix some formula for them. Hurry on back to your room.”

“Yes, yes, go rest while you can. We’re here!”

    “…”

Their muffled voices carried over one after another.

Anzhi and Yan Xi both remained perfectly still, not uttering a single sound.

After a while, Anzhi couldn’t help but ask, “Should I go out and help?”

Yan Xi gently rubbed her ear and asked, “Do you even know how to soothe a baby? Better not.”

A little later, the babies’ crying still hadn’t ceased.

“I’ll go check.” Just as Yan Xi was about to get up, Anzhi pulled her back, whispering, “This is my room. If you walk out, you’ll be seen…”

Anzhi’s doorway was visible from the direction of the living room. Yan Xi froze, wrinkling her nose. For some reason, Anzhi found it rather amusing.

Yan Xi had no choice but to lie back down. It seemed they would just have to wait it out.
