The Prime Minister’s Daughter and the Marquis’s Fool – Chapter 260

Daughters Don’t Know How
Zhao Ningying saw Qu Zhimu’s gaze fall upon her. She couldn’t leave now even if she wanted to—she could only steel herself and walk back.
Qu Zhimu and Qiao Jin looked as composed as ever. Seeing Zhao Ningying approach, Qu Zhimu asked, “What happened to you just now?”
Zhao Ningying met Qu Zhimu’s eyes for a moment, then quickly lowered her head, her conscience pricking her. “Nothing.”
Qiao Jin glanced at the servant. The maid understood and reported, “Miss Ying was walking along just fine, but then she suddenly turned around and walked right into me.”
Qu Zhimu nodded at this. Before she could fully process what had happened, the flush that had only just faded from Qiao Jin’s fair face crept back up unbidden.
Qu Zhimu saw that Zhao Ningying kept her head down, assuming she felt guilty for bumping into someone, and asked, “What brings you here?”
Zhao Ningying looked up and said, “My mothers went to your mansion. I heard that you and Qianjie-meimei had come here, so I came to find you.”
Qu Zhimu nodded, then fell silent. Seeing the group standing there awkwardly, Qiao Jin said, “It’s cold outside. Why don’t we sit inside for a while?”
Qu Zhimu looked at Qiao Jin and smiled. “All right.”
The three returned to the study. Zhu Qianjie was still eating, flipping through a picture book as she ate. Seeing that Zhao Ningying had come too, she quickly stood up and smiled, “Ying-jiejie, you’re here too!”
Zhao Ningying’s awkwardness eased somewhat. She smiled and nodded.
The Qiao household, learning that several esteemed guests had arrived, had more refreshments brought out. Zhao Ningying hadn’t eaten dinner yet, so she simply ate there. Qu Zhimu continued keeping Qiao Jin company while she wrote her policy essays. As the night deepened, Zhao Ningying and Zhu Qianjie grew drowsy. Qu Zhimu didn’t want to leave yet, but seeing her two younger cousins yawning repeatedly, she couldn’t bear to keep them waiting and took her leave of Qiao Jin.
Outside the Qiao Residence, the two younger ones climbed into the carriage, but Qu Zhimu lingered by it, reluctant to part from Qiao Jin.
Only when Qiao Jin stepped forward and held her for a moment did Qu Zhimu feel satisfied enough to board the carriage.
A few days later, Qu Zhimu’s grand wedding took place, with the Emperor and Empress attending in person.
Qu Zhimu had dressed early in wedding attire adapted from official robes in the Quzhao style. Though both were women, there still had to be some distinction in the marriage. And the wedding attire she wore was crafted by Qu Sheng’s own hands.
In her free time, Qu Sheng would also make a few garments for Lin Xizhao. Though she couldn’t manage phoenix robes, she could still make clothes for going out. She added one or two new pieces every year, and Lin Xizhao wore them every time she went out.
Qu Zhimu rode horseback, bringing along two younger cousins—one paternal, one maternal—as she made her way to the Qiao Residence. Inside and out, the Qiao Residence was thronged with people. Qu Zhimu stood waiting in the main hall, and before long, Qiao Jin was carried out of her boudoir on a soft litter by her elder brother.
The Qiao family, who had originally been unwilling to marry off their daughter, now didn’t dare object in the slightest. Their attitude toward Qu Zhimu and Qiao Jin had completely reversed—they practically wanted to paste smiling faces on and keep grinning forever.
“Set my wife down. I’ll carry her.”
During a wedding, the bride’s feet must not touch the ground. The Qiao family had prepared a soft litter because they worried Qu Zhimu wouldn’t be able to carry her.
When Qu Zhimu said this, the people around exchanged glances, somewhat uneasy.
“It’s fine. Let Zhimu carry me.” Qiao Jin’s gentle voice came from beneath the red bridal veil1. She remembered the day Qu Zhimu had carried her up to the top of the city gate tower—Qu Zhimu had carried her with barely any effort at all.
Qu Zhimu heard Qiao Jin’s voice and smiled, pressing her lips together. She remembered watching the Top Scholar’s parade from outside all those years ago, chasing after it for quite a while. And now, that very Top Scholar was about to ride her bridal sedan into her family.
Qu Zhimu’s heart soared. She stepped forward, her breathing slightly quickened, and leaned close to Qiao Jin, whispering, “Wife, hold on tight to me.”
As soon as Qu Zhimu spoke, she scooped Qiao Jin into her arms. Qiao Jin instinctively wrapped her arms around Qu Zhimu’s neck.
Qu Zhimu looked down at the red bridal veil, unable to suppress her smile, and carried Qiao Jin out through the doorway.
“Raise the sedan!”
At the loud cry, deafening gongs and drums resounded through the street stretching east to west, their echoes spreading to every lane and alley.
Qu Ning and Zhao Ningying exchanged a glance, then looked at Qu Zhimu, who was still turning back to gaze at the bridal sedan.
Qu Ning saw Qu Zhimu staring blankly at the sedan door and smiled. “Mu-jiejie, you’ll have plenty of time to look once we’re back.”
The common people gathered around the Qiao Residence’s gate spontaneously made way. Qu Zhimu smiled and lightly squeezed her horse’s flanks, leading the procession toward King Long’s Mansion.
The number of guests invited to today’s banquet was countless. One large courtyard couldn’t accommodate them all, so another had to be set up as well. Fortunately, there was enough food prepared.
With the Emperor, the Empress, and the Imperial Crown Princess attending in person, naturally no one wanted to miss this opportunity. Those with daughters had brought them along.
Previously, Qu Yu and Qu Ting had served as Prince Regent, and Prime Minister Yun was quite familiar with them. Today, on the occasion of Qu Zhimu’s grand wedding, Qu Yu had also sent an invitation to the Yun residence.
Yun Ming had hardly ever attended such banquets before, but lately she had been frequently accompanying her father to social events.
After Qu Zhimu and Qiao Jin completed their wedding bows, they came to the banquet to toast the guests. When they reached Prime Minister Yun’s table, Qu Zhimu couldn’t help but take an extra look at Yun Ming.
Qu Zhimu took the cup of wine diluted with water that Zhao Ningying had poured for her, and raised it to Prime Minister Yun and his daughter. “Come, Prime Minister Yun, Lord Yun—Rong’an toasts you both. Thank you for coming to attend my wedding with Qiao Jin.”
Prime Minister Yun and Yun Ming rose and raised their wine cups. Prime Minister Yun smiled, “You’re too kind, Commandery Princess. For King Long to send an invitation to this old man is truly an honor. Come, this old man toasts the Commandery Princess—may you and Top Scholar Qiao sing like paired phoenixes2 and grow old together.”
“Many thanks.” Qu Zhimu drank across from Prime Minister Yun.
Seeing her finish, Zhao Ningying, wearing a festive smile, poured her another cup. Qu Zhimu raised her wine cup and looked toward Yun Ming.
But at this moment, Yun Ming’s gaze was not on her.
Zhao Ningying noticed Yun Ming staring at her. Holding the wine pot in one hand, she touched her face with the other and asked in confusion, “Is there something on my face?”
Yun Ming withdrew her gaze, shook her head, and said, “No.”
Everyone at the table was watching them. A moment later, Yun Ming spoke again: “You look very much like your mother.”
Zhao Ningying certainly knew she resembled her mother, but right now Qu Zhimu was in the middle of toasting—Yun Ming seemed to be confusing the roles of guest and host.
“Come, Lord Yun—Rong’an toasts you.” Qu Zhimu broke the awkwardness, raising her wine cup to drink with her.
Yun Ming looked at Qu Zhimu, nodded, and raised her wine cup as well. “May Commandery Princess Rong’an and Lord Qiao be forever united in heart, with love that never wavers.”
“Many thanks.” Qu Zhimu smiled her gratitude and raised her cup to drink.
After they finished their wine, Qu Zhimu gave a slight nod and moved on to drink with another minister.
Zhao Ningying followed behind Qu Zhimu, pouring wine for her, but every time she turned to look at Yun Ming, she found Yun Ming watching her.
By evening, when the toasts were nearly done, Zhao Ningying told Cheng Xi and Xiao Bingying about it.
“She stared at me like a cat watching a mouse—it made my whole body uncomfortable.” Zhao Ningying frowned.
If she hadn’t heard that the place the Yun family came from ate human flesh, her reaction probably wouldn’t have been so strong. Even though Cheng Xi had told her the Yun family didn’t eat people, she still felt a bit creeped out.
Cheng Xi held her daughter in her arms, comforting her for a moment before saying, “It’s fine. Go play with Ning-jiejie now.”
Zhao Ningying nodded. As she left, Qu Sheng and Lin Xizhao watched her retreating back for a few extra moments.
Xiao Bingying kept her head down at this moment, feeling uneasy in her heart, yet not knowing what to do. She couldn’t very well march over and ask Yun Ming what she was after.
“Should I speak with Prime Minister Yun again?” Qu Sheng said, looking at Cheng Xi.
Cheng Xi looked up and shook her head. “When I’ve interacted with her before, I didn’t find her to have an eccentric temperament. There shouldn’t be any major issue.”
Qu Sheng nodded. “Let me know if you need anything.”
Cheng Xi nodded. When she looked at Xiao Bingying, she saw that Xiao Bingying had kept her head lowered the entire time.
The banquet dispersed, and the courtyard full of people knelt in reverence to the Emperor, the Empress, and the Imperial Crown Princess. Though Qu Sheng was happy today, she hadn’t gotten drunk. On New Year’s Day, she had gotten drunk and said a string of bawdy things to Lin Xizhao—even now, she still felt that Lin Xizhao saw her as a rake.
Lately, she needed to maintain a proper image and strive to make Lin Xizhao forget her wanton behavior that day.
The banquet ended, and the guests departed with full stomachs.
Zhao Jiayu lit a lamp and worked on the account books. Qu Yu stood beside her, pouring her a cup of tea.
“Wife3, it’s late. You can look at it tomorrow.”
Zhao Jiayu looked up and smiled. “I’m not tired. You go rest first. I’ll come back once I finish these accounts.”
Qu Yu smiled and acknowledged her, but didn’t leave. He found a seat nearby and sat down, quietly watching his wife.
Qu Zhimu’s grand wedding was the greatest wish fulfilled in his heart. For the remaining days, he simply hoped to spend more time with Zhao Jiayu.
Qu Zhimu hadn’t drunk much today. Zhao Ningying had personally diluted the wine—only one part wine, the rest all water. Even so, Qu Zhimu hadn’t drunk too much liquid. She remembered what was important tonight.
Bridal Chamber and Festive Candles4.
Dressed in her wedding robes, Qu Zhimu smoothed her garments and entered the room after the maid pushed open the door.
Qiao Jin, seated on the wedding bed, stirred at the sound of the door opening. In her nearly twenty years of life, she had never imagined she would one day marry a woman so openly and legitimately.
Qu Zhimu walked over. The maid who had followed brought in the items needed for the bridal chamber.
Qu Zhimu glanced sideways and saw the wedding steelyard5 and wine cups, but she couldn’t imagine what the items covered by the red cloth beside them might be.
The maid stood at her side holding the wine cups and wedding steelyard, while another tray of items was set on the small table beside the bed.
“Please, Commandery Princess, use the wedding steelyard to lift the bride’s red veil, and from this day forward, all shall be as your heart desires.” The maid kept her head lowered as she spoke with a smile.
Qu Zhimu withdrew her gaze, the corners of her lips curving up slightly. She gathered her sleeves and picked up the wedding steelyard.
The moment the red veil was lifted, Qu Zhimu stood there gazing at Qiao Jin, who rarely wore much makeup—now with vivid red lips, rouged cheeks, and eyebrows painted like ink strokes, she was so captivating that Qu Zhimu’s heart raced.
Qiao Jin looked up at Qu Zhimu. Seeing her burning gaze fixed upon her, she shyly lowered her eyes.
“Please, Commandery Princess and the Commandery Princess’s wife, drink the nuptial wine6,” the maid said, bringing forward the filled wine cups. “From this day forward, you shall share in sweetness and bitterness, through hardship and together.”
Qu Zhimu came back to her senses at the sound and sat down beside Qiao Jin.
The two sat facing each other, took the wine cups, and drank with arms intertwined. After they finished the nuptial wine, the maids removed their elaborate wedding robes and hair ornaments.
In no time, they were left wearing only red inner garments.
The maids withdrew, leaving only the two of them standing by the bed.
Their eyes met, and both shyly lowered their heads. Qiao Jin, being slightly older and naturally more mature, spoke first, her voice gentle. “Let’s rest.”
Qu Zhimu looked up at Qiao Jin and nodded.
But after the words were spoken, neither of them moved. Qiao Jin gave a low, helpless laugh. “Are we going to stand here until dawn?”
Qu Zhimu laughed at this and reached out to take Qiao Jin’s hand, pulling her onto the bed.
Qu Zhimu climbed onto the bed first. Qiao Jin glanced down and followed her.
The crimson wedding quilt and bed curtains, along with the red garments they both wore, were quite dazzling. Qu Zhimu smiled. “Even I find it a bit dazzling.”
Qiao Jin’s eyes curved into a smile. “If you don’t like it, you can have them changed tomorrow.”
“No need. It looks festive.” Qu Zhimu spoke and looked again at the red garment Qiao Jin wore.
The red suited her even more—Qiao Jin’s flawless skin was set off like lustrous jade, making one’s imagination run wild.
Qiao Jin lowered her eyes under Qu Zhimu’s direct gaze. She sat on the bed with her head down, but Qu Zhimu drew closer and closer.
Qu Zhimu tilted her face slightly, and as she leaned close, she kissed upward from beneath Qiao Jin’s lips. Four lips touched—the softness made her heart want to go mad with desire.
Qu Zhimu’s kisses grew ever more unrestrained, and every response from Qiao Jin made Qu Zhimu feel as though her heart had been struck by lightning—a rush of heat, both pleasurable and overwhelming, coursed through her body, compelling her to want more.
Qiao Jin was pressed onto the bed by Qu Zhimu, her hands at a loss, not knowing where to place them.
They kissed for a long time, yet for a long time there was no further action. After a while, Qu Zhimu raised her head, breathing slightly fast, and whispered, “What do we… what are we supposed to do next?”
Qiao Jin’s chest heaved, but upon hearing Qu Zhimu’s words, she blinked, revealing an equally confused expression.
“I… I don’t know either.”
Early the next morning, Qu Zhimu woke first. She opened her eyes and saw the festive red of the bed curtains all around, her surprise slowly giving way to the memory of yesterday’s wedding. She turned to look at Qiao Jin beside her, watching her gentle sleeping face, and shifted carefully closer to press a soft kiss to her lips.
Qiao Jin was roused by the kiss and slowly opened her eyes. She saw Qu Zhimu hovering above her with a sweet smile, and she smiled back.
The two rose, and maids came to attend them. The elderly nanny from the mansion came to tidy their bed. Qu Zhimu sat at the vanity and traced Qiao Jin’s delicate eyebrows, but seeing her so enticing, she couldn’t resist leaning in to kiss Qiao Jin’s soft lips again.
Qiao Jin seemed to have grown accustomed to Qu Zhimu’s sudden kisses. She smiled and said, “Let me do yours too.”
“All right.” Qu Zhimu handed the brush to Qiao Jin.
After they changed into their clothes and finished their toilette, they went to the front hall to serve tea7 to Qu Yu and Zhao Jiayu.
Qu Zhimu held Qiao Jin’s hand as they knelt before the two elders. A maid brought tea and handed it first to Qu Zhimu.
“Father, please drink tea.” Qu Zhimu smiled as she offered the tea.
Qu Yu smiled and took it, lifting the porcelain lid, blowing on it, and taking a small sip. Then it was Qiao Jin’s turn.
“Father, please drink tea.” Qiao Jin respectfully offered the tea.
Qu Yu’s expression was warm. He smiled as he accepted it and also took a sip, then had someone bring up the prepared gifts.
“Father knows you excel at ink painting. This is a surviving work by Du Tao—’Lutes Playing in Harmony8.’ Father knows you have great ambitions, but I only have Mu’er as my daughter. I hope that in your spare time, you will spend more time with her and never let her heart grow cold.”
Qiao Jin looked up at Qu Yu’s words and said, “Rest assured, Father. Since this New Daughter-in-law9 has married Zhimu, I will not fail her. No matter what happens in the future, I will always put her first.”
Qu Yu smiled and nodded. Qiao Jin’s maid took the scroll.
“Mother, please drink tea.”
When it was Zhao Jiayu’s turn, she drank the tea Qiao Jin offered and smiled. “Mother doesn’t have much to say, except that I hope you two can have a child soon.”
Qiao Jin paused at the word “child” and looked at Qu Zhimu. How were they supposed to have a child?
Qu Zhimu said hastily, “Mother, that’s still far off. We’ve just gotten married.”
“All right, all right, no rush.” Zhao Jiayu smiled and had someone bring over the guqin she had prepared. “I don’t really understand all those fancy words, but hearing your Father talk about lutes playing in harmony—well, this guqin is along the same lines. Jin’er is not only skilled in letters but has also practiced the art of the qin diligently. Mother hopes you’ll like this gift.”
The maid carried the guqin over and lifted the brocade covering it for Qiao Jin to see. Crafted from fine-quality wood, it was truly a rare and exceptional instrument.
“Thank you, Mother. This New Daughter-in-law likes it very much.”
Zhao Jiayu nodded with satisfaction seeing that Qiao Jin liked it. It was worth going to the palace to ask Lin Xizhao—by catering to their preferences, the gift pleased both sides.
Qu Zhimu supported Qiao Jin as the two accompanied their elders to breakfast.
It was the first time the whole family had eaten together. Qu Zhimu, who used to only bury her head in her food, kept serving dishes to Qiao Jin. She was so attentive that she even picked out the fish bones for her.
Qu Yu and Zhao Jiayu watched their daughter’s transformation and couldn’t help but feel a little jealous.
“All right, that’s enough. You eat too.” Qiao Jin smiled and stopped Qu Zhimu from serving her more food. She didn’t practice martial arts and didn’t eat much.
“Here, Wife, you eat too.” Qu Yu picked up some food for Zhao Jiayu.
Zhao Jiayu had been secretly observing the two youngsters, but when Qu Yu served her food, she smiled and said, “Nothing beats one’s own husband.”
“Mother!” Qu Zhimu’s wits sharpened too—she caught Zhao Jiayu’s teasing and quickly served her more of her favorite dishes.
The family laughed at Qu Zhimu’s plaintive cry of “Mother!”
After breakfast, Qu Zhimu accompanied Qiao Jin to the study that had been prepared for her. Qu Zhimu didn’t care for reading and only had an armory, but Qiao Jin was a Top Scholar and a court official. On the very night their marriage was settled, Qu Zhimu had ordered a study to be carved out, right next to their bedchamber.
This way, it would be even more convenient for Qu Zhimu to find Qiao Jin.
Qiao Jin was writing policy essays while Qu Zhimu ground ink beside her, smiling. “My Little Aunt10 gave you half a month off11, yet you can’t sit idle for a moment.”
Qiao Jin paused her brushstrokes at this and looked at Qu Zhimu. “Are you bored?”
Qu Zhimu nodded. “A little. But being with you, anything is fine.”
Qiao Jin had just promised Qu Yu that she would always put Qu Zhimu first. If Qu Zhimu was bored now, she would take a break and chat with her for a while.
Qu Zhimu watched Qiao Jin set her brush on the brush rest and place a paperweight on her policy essay. “Why did you stop writing?”
“Didn’t you say you were bored?” Qiao Jin said in her gentle voice.
Qu Zhimu understood Qiao Jin’s meaning and smiled. “I am a little bored, but you don’t have to sacrifice the time Little Aunt gave you for your work. I know you’re destined for great things. I may not have your talent for governing, but what I can do is not hold you back. In this mansion from now on, you can do whatever you want. I’ll support you unconditionally, always.”
Qu Zhimu raised her hand and propped her chin up as she spoke, her gaze toward Qiao Jin tinged with admiration.
Qiao Jin felt Qu Zhimu’s devotion. Seeing how she could be both tender-hearted and adorable, she couldn’t resist leaning in to kiss her.
She did have feelings for Qu Zhimu—though not as deeply as Qu Zhimu had fallen, she knew that one day, she would fall madly in love with the girl before her.
Qu Zhimu’s heart raced as Qiao Jin kissed her first. She looked down at Qiao Jin’s approaching lips, and just as Qiao Jin was about to pull back, Qu Zhimu reached out and drew her back in.
Their parted lips met once more. Qu Zhimu kissed her, tentatively parting Qiao Jin’s soft lips.
A sweet, soft tongue swept lightly across. Qiao Jin’s eyes widened. After Qu Zhimu lingered at the barrier of her teeth a few times, she finally let her in.
Their soft tongues entwined. Qu Zhimu felt a different kind of pleasure for the first time—an irresistible sensation that made her plunge deeper greedily, kissing Qiao Jin until she was somewhat dazed.
Knock knock knock—someone rapped on the door, and Zhao Jiayu’s voice quickly followed. “Mu’er, Jin’er, are you busy?”
Qu Zhimu was kissing Qiao Jin when she heard her mother’s voice. They both stopped their entwined movements, and Qu Zhimu slowly released Qiao Jin.
Both their faces bore different shades of red, but having experienced last night, Qiao Jin was no longer as shy.
Qu Zhimu went to open the door. Zhao Jiayu stood outside, peering in, and asked softly, “Where’s Jin’er?”
Qu Zhimu stepped aside and said, “My wife is inside.”
Qiao Jin came over as well. “Is there something you need, Mother?”
Zhao Jiayu saw Qiao Jin and smiled. “It’s nothing much. I need to ask Mu’er something—borrowing her for a moment.”
Qiao Jin smiled at Zhao Jiayu’s playful tone. “All right.”
“Ask me what?” Qu Zhimu looked at Zhao Jiayu.
Zhao Jiayu reached out and pulled Qu Zhimu outside. “You’ll know once you come out.”
The door closed. Qiao Jin glanced at it but didn’t think much of it, returning to her policy essays.
Zhao Jiayu pulled Qu Zhimu into another room. As soon as they entered, she asked, “What’s going on with you two?”
Qu Zhimu was bewildered by the question. “What do you mean?”
“Didn’t you two have your wedding night last night? How come you didn’t… do that.” Zhao Jiayu said this, bending her two thumbs toward each other and wiggling them.
Qu Zhimu was puzzled at first, but quickly understood what Zhao Jiayu meant. Her cheeks burned as she stammered incoherently, “This daughter doesn’t know how.”
“Didn’t we prepare everything for you? If you don’t know how, how will you have children? You don’t know how—does Jin’er not know either?”
Qu Zhimu blinked. Hearing Zhao Jiayu’s words, she suddenly recalled the items on that tray last night—she had lifted the cloth to look. A pile of jade implements and some oddly shaped objects.
“Jin’er doesn’t know either.” Qu Zhimu said in a low voice, her face growing even redder.
After the meal, Zhao Jiayu had also heard from the nanny who tidied their room—the wedding bed showed no signs of anything, the prepared items seemed untouched, and they hadn’t called for water12 during the night.
Zhao Jiayu was frustrated with them and sent someone to fetch Cheng Xi.
Though Cheng Xi was a physician, she still found it embarrassing to discuss such matters—especially when facing two younger relatives.
The author has something to say:
Cheng Xi: “Doctors aren’t omnipotent, you know.”
Xiao Bingying: “You can do it.”
Qu Zhimu: “Just explain the basics. My comprehension is top-notch.”
Cheng Xi: “Fine.”
