The Prime Minister’s Daughter and the Marquis’s Fool – Chapter 180
by Little PandaI Want the Bei’an Commander Captured Alive!
Lin Xizhao looked up to meet Lin Xikuan’s gaze, a trace of confusion flashing through her eyes. Soon, she heard Lin Xikuan laugh, “His Majesty has ascended the throne. It is no longer called Tiansheng now. Most of the old officials in the court, as well as the princes and marquises without fiefdoms, have had their titles revoked. Only our family received His Majesty’s special grace, allowing me to inherit it. Ajie, come with me to thank His Majesty.”
Lin Xizhao’s eyelashes trembled slightly. Lin Xikuan released his hand and looked toward Jin Mingjun, but Lin Xizhao tightened her fingers, remaining unmoved.
“Ajie?” Seeing that Lin Xizhao wasn’t moving, Lin Xikuan turned back and called out to her again.
Lin Xizhao raised her eyes and glanced at him, her gaze wavering before she lowered her eyes a moment later.
Seeing Lin Xizhao ignore Lin Xikuan’s words, the smile on Jin Mingjun’s face vanished. He exchanged a look with Lin Xikuan, and Lin Xikuan also furrowed his brows.
“Xizhao-meimei, are you blaming This Emperor for not issuing an edict to name you Empress immediately after succeeding the throne?”
Upon hearing the word Empress, everyone’s expressions involuntarily grew tense. Lin Xizhao kept her eyes lowered, saying nothing.
Jin Mingjun took a step forward. Lin Xikuan stepped aside, but the people of the Qu family and their guards stepped out again, blocking his path toward Lin Xizhao.
“Insolent! Is His Majesty someone you can block!” the inner court attendant beside him began to scold again.
Jin Mingjun exchanged a look with Qu Yu, a hint of annoyance in his eyes, but he couldn’t touch the Qu family for the time being.
“Xizhao-meimei, do not be anxious. The Ministry of Rites has already begun drafting the procedures. You will very soon be This Emperor’s Empress.” Jin Mingjun seemed to be saying this intentionally for the Qu family to hear.
Sure enough, a layer of worry washed over the faces of the Qu family. Zhao Jiayu, wearing an expression of pure disgust, shifted her gaze from Jin Mingjun to Lin Xizhao.
Lin Xizhao kept her eyes lowered, her thoughts unreadable.
Jin Mingjun stood there, not advancing any further or speaking. The people in the courtyard also stood perfectly still.
Lin Xikuan raised his eyes to sweep a glance over everyone, walked to Jin Mingjun’s side, and said in a low voice, “Your Majesty, the weather is cold, please take care of your dragon body. This humble subject has already seen Ajie and will certainly not let you down.”
Hearing this, Jin Mingjun turned his head to meet Lin Xikuan’s gaze. Seeing his confident demeanor, he nodded and said, “Return to the palace.”
A massive entourage had come in a grand procession and left just as grandly. The people of the Qu Residence only relaxed their taut nerves when the very last person departed the estate.
“Xizhao, are you alright?” Ever since seeing Lin Xikuan, Lin Xizhao had looked heavily preoccupied. Zhao Jiayu said, somewhat frustrated by his failure to meet expectations, “Xikuan is simply outrageous. He hasn’t changed his stubborn ways at all. How could he switch sides at the last moment over some petty favors? What a white-eyed wolf1.”
Listening to Zhao Jiayu curse Lin Xikuan, Lin Xizhao pulled out the slip of paper she had been gripping in her hand.
Zhao Jiayu had been preparing to curse him a few more times, but upon seeing the paper in Lin Xizhao’s hand, she swallowed her scolding and asked, “What is that?”
Lin Xizhao met Zhao Jiayu’s confused gaze and said, “Let’s speak inside.”
The people in the estate all headed toward the main hall. Jin Yunfei’s face was grave. She had known earlier that Jin Mingjun had proclaimed himself emperor, and hadn’t felt much emotional fluctuation then, but seeing him now left a bitter taste in her mouth.
Entering the hall, Lin Xizhao unfolded the slip, only to find no writing on it.
“Does this look like a topographic map?” After looking at it, Qu Yu pointed to a spot and said, “Here is our Residence, and right outside our estate is Prince Zhongping’s Residence.”
Pointing at a drawing of bricks near the wall, Qu Yu asked in confusion, “What is this?”
Lin Xizhao stared at the drawing, looking at a place in the middle that resembled a water channel, and said, “Xikuan probably wants to dig a tunnel.”
Lin Xizhao thought for a moment and added, “If I’m not mistaken, Prince Zhongping has already been killed, so his estate is currently empty.”
With the estate empty, there were no defenses.
“But Prince Zhongping’s Residence is quite far from here. Digging a tunnel won’t be that easy,” Qu Yu pointed out the critical issue.
Lin Xizhao lowered her eyes in thought, then looked toward Qu Jixian and said, “Second Uncle, I’ve heard there is a broad underground river channel beneath Capital City. Is it possible that our estate and Prince Zhongping’s Residence are connected by this underground river channel?”
Qu Jixian’s brows furrowed slightly. He pondered for a few moments before saying, “When the capital was built back then, our dynasty’s Directorate of Astronomy2 mentioned that beneath Capital City lay an underground river channel extending in all directions. They used the flow of water to nourish the capital’s fengshui—as long as the water remained, the dynasty would endure; if the rivers dried up, the nation would perish. It seems the underground river channels have dried up.”
As soon as Qu Jixian spoke, a trace of astonishment appeared on everyone’s faces.
But it also confirmed that Lin Xikuan hadn’t truly thrown in his lot with Jin Mingjun. However, their identities were all highly sensitive, and with Lin Xirui having vanished from Capital City out of thin air, Jin Mingjun was bound to be even more vigilant.
Even if they managed to get out of the estate, leaving the city would be extremely difficult.
“I’ll first go check which wells in the estate have dried up.” Qu Yu bowed to everyone and headed outside. Even if they couldn’t leave, it might become a place to take refuge in the future.
The Bei’an forces had lost thirty thousand soldiers due to underestimating the enemy, leaving them brimming with resentment over Qu Sheng’s battle tactics.
Because Qu Sheng had previously ordered her archers to shoot the Bei’an soldiers hurling insults beneath the city gates, the Bei’an army now sent men carrying thick shields to issue challenges once more.
“What kind of heroes cower inside a city! If you have the guts, come out and let our two armies fight a proper battle!”
“You’re a bunch of hot-blooded men, yet you’re commanded by a woman! Aren’t you ashamed to let others hear of it!”
“Tiansheng’s army is full of spineless women who don’t dare answer a challenge and only know how to hide in the city crying all day!”
Even uglier words from the Bei’an army echoed endlessly in the soldiers’ ears. They were bottling up their anger, but without their commander’s orders, none dared to act rashly.
Enduring this daily barrage of insults and mockery, the soldiers slowly accumulated a simmering rage.
In her established command room, Qu Sheng was meticulously redrawing a map, detailing the offensive routes and troop deployments with extreme precision.
The Shoulin reinforcements had arrived, but the weapons she had requested were in short supply. Qu Sheng sat in a grand armchair, her eyes closed in thought as she considered what in the city could be used as substitutes.
Qu Sheng stepped out of the room, summoned an officer, and asked about the city’s inventory of wooden items.
“I don’t want firewood. I need sturdy, thick timber,” Qu Sheng specified her requirements.
Hearing this, the Assistant Commander blinked and said, “We do have some, but I don’t know if they can be of use to the General.”
“What is it?”
“Wheelbarrows.”
Upon hearing the word “wheelbarrows,” Qu Sheng thought of the carts used to sell goods or transport items on the streets. She immediately issued an order to have the wheelbarrows from the commoners’ homes dismantled.
Along with the wheels from carriages and carts used to transport supplies.
Even if the weapons from Shoulin were finished, they wouldn’t arrive anytime soon. Traveling north by borrowing the roads from Shoulin wasn’t as close a journey as coming from the Tiansheng interior.
Qu Sheng mobilized any usable materials in the city, doing her utmost to assemble the equipment she needed. Even if it wasn’t enough, it was better than nothing.
It had been many days since Cai Daozheng and Feng Qi had led the troops out. Qu Sheng estimated the time; as long as the forces they led hadn’t dragged out the fight unnecessarily, they would likely return during the Hour of the Rat the day after tomorrow.
Qu Sheng wiped her sword, waiting for news to arrive.
At the Qu Residence in Capital City, Qu Yu had gone to inspect the dry wells in the estate that day, but after ordering men to jump down, he hadn’t seen any passageway. The location Lin Xikuan had indicated was somewhat unclear. Qu Yu and the others guessed that Lin Xikuan probably didn’t know exactly where the dry wells in the estate were located.
Since that day, Lin Xikuan hadn’t been able to visit again, leaving Lin Xizhao somewhat worried for his safety.
On this day, the people in the house had finished their morning meal and were playing with Zhimu, who could already run about. The steward hurriedly came in from outside, saying that Jin Mingjun had sent people over again.
The last time Jin Mingjun came, the Qu family had all gone out to receive him. This time, Qu Jixian had everyone wait inside while he went over himself.
Lin Xikuan followed behind. The head inner court attendant held an imperial edict in both hands, as if preparing to issue a decree.
“This edict is for Junzhu Xizhao. It would be best for Lord Marquis Qu to have her come out to receive it.” The inner court attendant had never seen anyone so oblivious to the times, so blatantly defying the Emperor.
“My Qu family’s daughter-in-law is slightly unwell. I fear she might pass her sickness onto all of you. It would be better for me, Qu Jixian, to accept it on her behalf.”
“You!” Hearing Qu Jixian’s words, the inner court attendant immediately wanted to retort. “Junzhu Xizhao is a woman awaiting marriage. How could she be a wife of your Qu Residence? This lowly one is well aware that there are no men of marriageable age left in your estate.”
“Hmph, if I say she is, then she is.” Qu Jixian gave a cold snort.
A few days ago when Jin Mingjun had come, he had made a passing remark that the Ministry of Rites was drafting procedures to name Lin Xizhao Empress.
Mobilizing such a large group today meant they were likely here to deliver the edict establishing her as Empress.
“May I ask what decree of the new Emperor the Lord Attendant has come to deliver today?”
How could a bystander casually inquire about the delivery of an imperial edict? But Qu Jixian asked anyway. His attitude clearly showed that whether Jin Mingjun could sit securely on the throne still depended on whether his Qu family agreed.
The inner court attendant also understood the severe implications. The Ministry of Rites had prepared the eight-character document3 and other items together, and now they had sent him first to present the betrothal gifts; there could be no mistake.
Moreover, having spent so much time in Capital City, he had never heard that Lin Xizhao was betrothed. Besides, her own younger brother had come along. How could he not know whether his own sister was betrothed?
When the inner court attendant delivering the edict insisted on having Lin Xizhao come out to receive it, Lin Xikuan smiled and said, “Lord Attendant, my older sister is weak, and the temperature plummeted last night. I imagine she truly has fallen ill. Infecting us is a minor matter, but if this worsens her condition and His Majesty brings down his blame, both you and I might find it hard to bear the consequences.”
As Lin Xikuan spoke, he raised his eyes to cast a brief glance at Qu Jixian. Qu Jixian met his gaze, his eyes as calm and composed as ever.
Lin Xikuan continued to the inner court attendant, “It’s the same no matter who receives the edict. We just need to complete our task.”
“Your Highness, this…” The inner court attendant was in a difficult spot. Conferring the title of Empress was a momentous event. How could it proceed without the person involved present?
Seeing his insistence, Lin Xikuan added, “If the Lord Attendant truly feels it will be hard to report back, I will make the trip on your behalf.”
“Will the Qu Residence let Your Highness inside?” the inner court attendant peeked at Qu Jixian out of the corner of his eye and whispered to Lin Xikuan.
“Allow me to ask.” After whispering with the inner court attendant for a moment, Lin Xikuan straightened his bent posture, looked toward Qu Jixian, gave a light cough, and asked, “Lord Marquis, is my Ajie well?”
Qu Jixian’s gaze flickered slightly as he glanced at Lin Xikuan without a word.
“Since my Ajie’s health is failing, as her younger brother, I am truly worried. May I go ask if I can see my Ajie?”
“Please, Lord Marquis, for my sister’s sake, let me go in and see her.” Seeing that Qu Jixian remained unmoved, Lin Xikuan’s tone shifted to a plea.
Qu Jixian remained silent, his expression heavy, but the steward beside him, upon catching the finger gestures behind his back, hurried off toward the main hall in the inner courtyard.
The steward returned quickly. After exchanging a glance with Qu Jixian, he said to Lin Xikuan, “Our Eldest Miss invites King Wenze inside to speak.”
Hearing this, the inner court attendant was overjoyed. He hurriedly looked at Lin Xikuan, handed the imperial edict into his hands, and said, “I’ll have to trouble Your Highness.”
Lin Xikuan took it, a smile hanging on his face as he replied, “Rest assured, Lord Attendant.”
With the edict securely in hand, Lin Xikuan followed the steward’s lead toward the inner courtyard of the residence. Qu Jixian stayed outside, keeping a close eye on those trying to get in.
Outside, a line was forming, bearing betrothal gifts, eager to enter.
As Lin Xikuan entered the inner residence, he matched the steward’s brisk pace, revealing the leg injury he had sustained from Lin Jianhai’s punishment. Just like Qu Jixian, he walked with a slight limp.
The steward walked up to the door and knocked. Zhao Jiayu, who had been standing by the door for a long while, pulled it right open upon hearing the noise.
Seeing Lin Xikuan arrive in his official robes, she reached out and dragged him inside.
Lin Xikuan stumbled a step, and by the time he regained his balance, Zhao Jiayu had already shut the door.
“Ajie!” Upon seeing Lin Xizhao, Lin Xikuan’s voice suddenly turned urgent.
Lin Xizhao handed Zhimu over to her grandmother, hurriedly stood up, and asked, “Xikuan, what was the meaning of that drawing you gave us?”
Hearing this, Lin Xikuan paused for a moment and said, “It’s the capital’s underground river channel. While surveying the terrain, I briefly looked over the capital’s geography. Beneath this estate, there is a passage leading outside.”
“Can it lead out of the city?” Lin Xizhao pressed further.
Lin Xikuan shook his head and said, “The underground river channels are tied to the safety of the city. When the capital was built back then, they were enclosed within it. The channels leading outward all have steep drops, making it nearly impossible to get out.”
Capital City’s elevation was extremely high, without any danger of flooding year-round. It seemed this was one of the reasons they had chosen to build the capital here.
“However, even though you cannot leave the city, you can still communicate with the outside. Jin Mingjun doesn’t completely trust me yet. As long as I can get out of the city, I can relay messages for you. Also, on my way back, I ran into Little Uncle. He’s still alive.”
“Is Little Uncle doing alright?” Hearing news of Liang Lianhui, Lin Xizhao’s heart clenched again.
Liang Lianhui had coincidentally been on a rest day4 that day, staying in his small residence within the capital, and thus had escaped a disaster.
“He’s perfectly fine. Oh, right, he told me that Jin Mingjun is aggressively expanding his forces. He watched for a few days, and from the activity, it looks like they are preparing to march north.” Lin Xikuan spilled everything in a rush; he had hurried over precisely to relay this news.
Jin Mingjun sending troops north was definitely not to aid Qu Sheng. He was somewhat worried that Jin Mingjun was planning to strike at Qu Sheng.
Hearing this, everyone in the room revealed expressions of shock. After staring blankly for a few moments, Lin Xizhao asked, “How are things at the Northern Frontier now?”
“I heard it’s still a stalemate, but Shoulin has already sent reinforcements. Because of this, Jin Mingjun has started moving troops from Jiangnan northward, likely to prevent the army Sheng-meimei commands from marching south,” Lin Xikuan analyzed.
“How many troops did Shoulin add?” Qu Yu hurriedly asked.
Lin Xikuan cast a sidelong glance and replied, “Three hundred thousand troops.”
Hearing this, Qu Yu’s brows twitched slightly. Three hundred thousand troops. If Shoulin didn’t recruit more soldiers in time, they might face problems with their subsequent defenses.
“Is there any other news?” Qu Yu asked again.
Lin Xikuan shook his head and said, “Not for the time being. But once the news of Jin Mingjun assassinating the monarch and usurping the throne spreads, I fear it will trigger chaos at the borders.”
Lin Xikuan was no longer that child with a heart so petty he fought over food and clothing. In just a few years, he had grown rapidly, bringing no disgrace to his title as the Bangyan.
Upon receiving this outside news, the people in the estate all wore frowns of worry. They knew what was happening but were completely unable to share Qu Sheng’s burdens.
After a brief silence in the room, Lin Xikuan took out the imperial edict in his hand and said, “Don’t pay too much mind to Jin Mingjun naming Ajie as Empress. There will be people who oppose it.”
Lin Xizhao looked up. Seeing Lin Xikuan’s certain demeanor, she seemed to realize who the obstructionists would be. Lord Feng’s eldest legitimate daughter was Jin Mingjun’s original wife.
Jin Mingjun had not posthumously named the Feng lady as Empress, yet he had issued a decree to name Lin Xizhao as Empress first. The Feng family would naturally step forward in opposition.
Lin Xikuan set the imperial edict aside on a wooden tea table, not even bothering to read it aloud. After chatting with the people in the room a bit longer, he said, “I’ve been here too long. I must head back. If anything happens, I’ll have someone relay a message through the well in a few days. If you have any instructions, you can also have someone strike a stick three times in Prince Zhongping’s Residence to find me.” Lin Xikuan specified the method for navigating the dry well route, though his end was not yet finished, and a short section of the path leading to the Qu Residence still needed to be excavated.
As Lin Xikuan gave his instructions, Lin Xizhao and the others nodded in agreement. Watching Lin Xikuan leave, Lin Xizhao’s expression grew worried again.
“Ajie doesn’t need to see me out. I will protect myself well.”
Looking at Lin Xikuan, who seemed to have finally grown up and was capable of holding his own, tears of both relief and bitterness welled in Lin Xizhao’s eyes.
Lin Xikuan exited the courtyard, plastering a fawning smile on his face. He walked up to the inner court attendant and said, “The decree has been delivered. Lord Attendant may order the betrothal gifts to be brought in.”
Hearing this, the inner court attendant was overjoyed and immediately ordered his men to bring the items in. However, the items only reached the gate of the Qu Residence’s outer courtyard before being stopped by the guards.
Qu Jixian said nothing about this. Instead, the inner court attendant beside him looked toward Lin Xikuan with a deeply anxious expression.
“This… Your Highness, Lord Marquis Qu refuses to let them in. What should we do?”
Lin Xikuan followed the inner court attendant’s gaze to Qu Jixian. He pondered for a few moments, his eyes darting as he whispered, “Lord Attendant can have the items sent to our Lin Residence. Although my Ajie is the Qu family’s sworn daughter, she is ultimately someone of my King Wenze’s Residence.”
Hearing this, a smile immediately broke out on the inner court attendant’s face. “Your Highness is correct.”
“You all, carry the items to King Wenze’s Residence.”
After enduring several days of patient waiting, Qu Sheng finally received news of Cai Daozheng’s return two nights later.
The troops Cai Daozheng led had not only burned the medicines to ash but had also incinerated the provisions following behind them.
This sneak attack had resulted in almost no casualties among their troops. When the flaming haystacks rolled down the hillside toward the enemy carts carrying grain and medicine, many horses were spooked and bolted wildly. Even with their iron armor, the Bei’an soldiers couldn’t withstand the roaring inferno. To make matters worse, a northern wind howled through the valley, fueling the flames to even greater heights until the entire valley was engulfed in a sea of fire, leaving complete devastation in its wake.
Cai Daozheng had originally wanted to go down and finish off the survivors, but because Feng Qi was by his side, he had suppressed the urge the several times it crossed his mind.
Having successfully torched the enemy’s supplies and provisions, the morale of Cai Daozheng’s troops surged, and their marching speed increased significantly.
Upon learning of Cai Daozheng’s success, Qu Sheng rallied her officers and men, launching a continuous, exhausting battle of attrition against the Bei’an army.
The night raids were not ideal. Qu Sheng had led her troops out of the city, and having failed to gain an advantage the first time, she brought them back and kept the city gates firmly shut.
While the Bei’an army stood hurling insults beneath the city walls, only a few hours passed before the two cities flanking the main city quietly opened their gates.
Tiansheng troops launched harassment attacks on the Bei’an main camp, forcing the Bei’an soldiers outside the main city to rush back to defend it. However, by the time the Bei’an forces returned, the Tiansheng army had long since slipped away.
By dawn, Qu Sheng had dispatched troops a total of three times, staggering the attacks to ensure the drugs the Bei’an soldiers had consumed had nowhere to be unleashed.
Although there were casualties with every sally, for the sake of the overarching strategy, there was no other way.
They ground it out until the afternoon of the second day. After the armies had taken turns taking the field for the final time, Qu Sheng led the troops from the main city out, using Shoulin’s Qu family cavalry as the vanguard. Arriving at the gates of the Bei’an encampment, they began issuing challenges.
However, when the troops Qu Sheng led hurled their insults, they were far more refined than the Bei’an army.
So much so that the Bei’an commander couldn’t even understand them. Looking utterly bewildered, he asked the strategist beside him.
“What are they saying?”
Hearing this, the strategist looked a bit awkward and replied, “It’s better if the General doesn’t know.”
“Hmm?” The Bei’an commander immediately widened his eyes, scaring the strategist into flinching. He hurriedly explained in a low voice, “They say you merely possess refined weapons but are a completely useless sack of straw, no different from a black bear in the mountains.”
Upon hearing this, the Bei’an soldiers flew into a violent rage, vowing that if they captured Qu Sheng alive, they would make her wish for death.
When Qu Sheng received the news at the central command, instead of getting angry, she laughed. She ordered, “Pass down my command to the three armies! In this battle, I want the Bei’an commander captured alive!”
Once Qu Sheng’s words were passed through every division of the army, the soldiers of the three armies shouted in unison, “Capture Adewa alive! Capture Adewa alive!”
Had it been any ordinary time, the Bei’an army would have long since poured out of their camp to clash with Qu Sheng’s forces. But after enduring several waves of harassment, their morale was somewhat shaken. Not only that, but the soldiers who had taken the drugs were utterly exhausted, and the supplies they had brought with them had mostly been depleted.
The Bei’an army also received the news at that moment: the provisions and supplies transported from within Bei’an borders, along with that vital batch of drugs, had all been reduced to ashes by the Tiansheng army.
For a time, the Bei’an morale plummeted.
But the Bei’an army still held a trump card. While Qu Sheng was issuing challenges, their reserve forces had already circled around to her rear.
When the scout corps came to report this, Qu Sheng immediately ordered her men to pivot. The vanguard became the rearguard, stepping up to meet the Bei’an ambush.
Qu Sheng’s troop formations were highly unconventional. Because of the inclusion of many Shoulin troops, their reaction speed was far faster and more flexible than usual, making it a breeze for Qu Sheng to direct them.
The ambushing Bei’an forces collided fiercely with Qu Sheng’s rearguard. While the soldiers clashed in bloody combat, Qu Sheng mobilized her weapons, shifting them toward the left and right flanks at the rear of the battlefield.
The previously abandoned trebuchets were hauled out again by Qu Sheng, becoming a secret weapon against the Bei’an army on the battlefield.
Aside from hurling stones, the trebuchets could also launch lethal weapons like fire oil bottles.
Holding a flag in her hand, Qu Sheng swung it, and the massive army banner in the center of the formation moved in tandem. Soon, the soldiers heard the clanging gongs signaling a retreat. The army pulled back, converging on Qu Sheng’s main force. Once the two armies had put some distance between them, Qu Sheng raised her flag and swung it again.
The black flag and the red flag in the center merged together. Massive stones weighing dozens of jin shot rapidly from the trebuchets toward the Bei’an iron armored soldiers, while fire oil bottles were hurled from the other flank.
In an instant, the Bei’an iron armored infantry was utterly routed. Heavy stones crashing from the sky shattered their insides, killing them instantly. Ignited by the fire oil bottles, their corpses quickly went up in flames.
The Bei’an vanguard of iron armored troops was completely decimated.
Seeing the tide turn against them, the Bei’an army ordered a retreat.
The Bei’an army mobilized its central command, setting up bed crossbows5 to launch a counterattack. However, to their shock, they were hit with pinpoint accuracy from over fifty zhang6 away by Qu Sheng’s improved catapults, hurling boulders even heavier than before.
The bed crossbows exposed by the Bei’an central command were smashed to pieces by Qu Sheng’s catapults.
Witnessing this, the Bei’an forces immediately began to fall back. Qu Sheng ordered her troops to sweep the battlefield behind them, then swiftly turned her entire army, pointing her blade straight at the Bei’an main encampment.
