Volume One: First Scroll
Something happened
She was asking her for help
After Song Yuhang said this, she quickly turned her head away as if afraid of being hit. While fiddling with the computer, she secretly sized Lin Yan up out of the corner of her eye.
A slight smile surfaced on Lin Yan’s lips. Seeing Song Yuhang looking at her, she quickly put on a stern face and slammed the other woman’s head onto the keyboard.
“What are you looking at? Get to work.”
The second marriage proposal ended in failure.
Song Yuhang dragged out an “Oh,” and resignedly picked herself up.
Although she didn’t possess Old Zheng’s superb computer skills, looking up something on the intranet was still a piece of cake for her.
Song Yuhang showed her the search results: “Guo Xiaoguang1, original name Zhu Fangjie2, son of the butcher Zhu Yong3. After his father’s incident, he was adopted by a family surnamed Guo and renamed Guo Xiaoguang.”
In the household registration photo, Guo Xiaoguang was in his early thirties, with a crew cut and monolids, unremarkable in appearance. However, a closer look revealed some resemblance in bone structure to the photos of Zhu Yong that Lin Yan had collected.
For many years, she had also been searching for people related to Zhu Yong, but there had been no news, or the leads were false.
Song Yuhang smiled, clarifying for her: “Many years ago, the Ministry of Public Security began working on the construction of ‘Skynet4,’ which is the prototype of today’s intranet. It includes the identity information, home addresses, family members, and even biological evidence like fingerprints, blood type, DNA, etc., of all persons in custody, serving sentences, released after serving sentences, and even deceased offenders.”
“A tight net has been cast for all criminals who might re-offend. This is also why the clearance rate for criminal cases has been increasing in recent years. Of course, this is also inextricably linked to advancements in criminal investigation technology.”
“Within this net, whether it’s marriage, divorce, registering a child’s household, or undergoing political review for employment—anywhere identity registration is required—it will be recorded by the local police station and uploaded to this net. Naturally, the authority to browse it is also quite high.”
Lin Yan quirked her lip, standing with her arms casually crossed. “Alright, alright, you just want to say you’re a leader of some sort. Get to the point. The result.”
Song Yuhang jotted down Guo Xiaoguang’s current home address, phone number, and ID information and handed it to her. “I think we need to find some time to pay him a visit.”
Lin Yan took the note and turned to leave, but was stopped. “Where are you going?”
“Duh, to investigate the case.”
Song Yuhang’s gaze was intense as she blocked her path. “Don’t be impulsive. We need to plan carefully and gather more evidence before we can reopen the case for investigation.”
Lin Yan curled her lip into a smile and brushed her hand away. “Don’t be impulsive? I don’t have much time left. Fourteen years have passed with no progress. In another six years, the statute of limitations for this case will expire. What’s the use of finding the murderer then? Can the law give me justice, give Chunan justice? Can it make the murderer pay with blood, sentence them to death? If not, I—”
Song Yuhang gripped her shoulders, calling her name with emphasis, “Lin Yan, even if the statute of limitations expires, we will go to the central authorities, to the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, to the Supreme People’s Court to appeal! Heaven’s justice is clear, and fairness resides in people’s hearts. I won’t let the murderer get away with it!”
Lin Yan shook her head, her smile somewhat contemptuous, a glint of moisture in her eyes. “It’s useless. Have you forgotten the ‘Ding Xue’ case? Forgotten He Miao, forgotten Bai Ling, forgotten Wu Wei, forgotten those children who died in the ‘White Whale Case’? The murderer isn’t just Li Yang; those irresponsible parents, the teachers and classmates who stood by and watched the bullying, the people who verbally attacked the deceased online—they are all murderers!”
As if a heavy hammer struck her heart, Song Yuhang’s eyes warmed, and she pulled Lin Yan into an embrace.
Lin Yan struggled, but Song Yuhang didn’t let go. Holding her head, she said word by word into her ear, “We pursue justice and righteousness not to become murderers ourselves one day. Lin Yan, if you really resort to vigilante justice to punish criminals, then what’s the difference between you and Li Yang, or those bystanders who fanned the flames?”
Lin Yan trembled slightly in her arms. Song Yuhang helped her up, gently wiped away the trace of moisture from her eyes, and said softly.
“Lin Yan, I don’t want you to become like that either. Promise me, we’ll plan this carefully. Have you forgotten Li Bin? Don’t alert the enemy. We’ll go through the proper procedures. The truth will come out one day.”
“If Chunan were still here, she definitely wouldn’t want you to take such risks for her. After all, you were her best friend, weren’t you?”
Lin Yan bit her lower lip slightly and said nothing, her fingers gripping Song Yuhang’s clothes. Under the dim yellow light, the tears Song Yuhang had just wiped away welled up again. She controlled herself well, merely letting her eyes redden without letting them fall.
Song Yuhang couldn’t bear to see her like this. She pulled her into an embrace, gently patting her back, offering comfort.
“Isn’t tomorrow Friday? I’ll go home with you tonight, then we’ll pack, and on Saturday, we’ll go to Guo Xiaoguang’s place. But, it’s getting late now, you must go to bed.”
Song Yuhang carefully helped her up, rubbing her cheek. “Hm?”
Lin Yan sniffled and slapped her hand away. “Get lost. I don’t need you to accompany me. I’ll go by myself.”
After a pause, she added in a small voice, “Besides, Lin Youyuan still doesn’t like you. Don’t go.”
In the end, she was still worried about her.
Song Yuhang chuckled and squeezed her hand. “Alright, then I won’t go in. I’ll wait for you outside.”
She always seemed able to use her gentle side to envelop Lin Yan’s sharp edges, slowly smoothing away her acerbity and restlessness.
Lin Yan’s agitated heart gradually calmed. She pulled her hand back, her ears feeling a little hot, and walked out. “Mm, I’m going to bed.”
Song Yuhang hastily tidied up the table, locked the door, and followed her closely. “Lin Yan, I want to…”
“Go sleep on the sofa!”
Before she could finish the words “sleep with you,” Lin Yan slammed the door shut with her heel, a “bang” locking Song Yuhang outside.
Song Yuhang was on the verge of tears. She pulled the doorknob; it didn’t budge. She could only knock continuously, softening her voice to plead, “Forensic Doctor Lin, Lin Yan, Yanyan…”
Lin Yan threw herself into her quilt, angrily covering her ears with a pillow, then grabbed a throw pillow and hurled it at the door. “If you don’t get lost, you can go back to sleeping in the courtyard!”
The knocking stopped abruptly. Song Yuhang knew when to quit and vanished.
The world finally returned to tranquility.
Lin Yan let out a long breath, took a box of pills from the bedside table, popped one out, and swallowed it with the cold water in the glass. She dimmed the table lamp, then snuggled into her quilt and closed her eyes.
She woke up in the middle of the night, chilled to the bone, her feet icy. Lin Yan got up, turned on the electric blanket, and switched on the air conditioner.
She looked at the sky outside; it was pitch black. In the quiet atmosphere, she could hear the whistling wind and the rustling sound of falling snow.
She got up, pulled a thick woolen blanket from the closet, and, treading softly in her slippers, gently opened the door.
A faint light flickered from downstairs. She leaned over the railing and glanced down. Song Yuhang was lying face up on the sofa, fast asleep, her laptop still on beside her.
Lin Yan tiptoed downstairs. She swore she’d never felt so guilty even when she was thieving. The short dozen or so meters felt surprisingly thrilling, and cold sweat soaked her back.
Only after gently covering Song Yuhang with the blanket did Lin Yan let out a sigh of relief.
The person who had been busy all day and frozen in the wind and snow for so long was probably truly exhausted. Even Lin Yan’s somewhat clumsy movements didn’t wake her.
Song Yuhang’s eyes were closed. She mumbled a few words, then turned over to face the inside of the sofa and continued sleeping.
Lin Yan tucked the blanket in for her, then turned around to turn off her computer, only to see several search tabs open: one about the “Fenyang Pier Dismemberment Case,” another about “overseas same-sex marriage registration,” and yet another about “honeymoon travel destinations,” a dazzling array.
An irrepressible curve formed on Lin Yan’s lips. She glanced back at Song Yuhang, then reached out and closed the laptop screen.
She was about to get up when Song Yuhang mumbled something again. She leaned down to listen, and what she heard was.
“Lin Yan… marriage…”
She really is… obsessed with this to the point of being deranged.
Lin Yan chuckled, no longer able to suppress the curve of her lips. Her eyes crinkled as she looked at the slightly handsome face in the darkness, leaned down, and offered her own lips.
The next morning, when she came downstairs stretching lazily, Song Yuhang had already made breakfast and freshly ground coffee for her, following her like a shadow.
“Did you cover me with the blanket last night?”
Lin Yan sipped her coffee and walked to the cloakroom. “No.”
“Then who was it?”
“The housekeeper, probably.”
Song Yuhang was puzzled. “But I clearly felt someone kiss me.”
Lin Yan slowly turned around, handing the coffee cup to her. “You must have had a wet dream5.”
Song Yuhang scratched her head. “Then who turned off my computer?”
Lin Yan picked out clothes from the neatly hung wardrobe. “Ghost-built wall6, maybe.”
Song Yuhang grew even more confused. “But—”
Soon, she cast the question aside. Lin Yan was standing in front of the dressing mirror, changing, her slender fingers undoing the sash of her bathrobe.
“Lin Yan, I want to sleep with you tonight. We haven’t—for a whole day—”
Veins throbbed on Lin Yan’s temple; she restrained herself from hitting her.
Song Yuhang persisted, her eyes glued to her. “Or, you can sleep with me, that works too.”
“Get lost!” Lin Yan roared, grabbing a clothes hanger and throwing it at her.
D#mn it, I’m still furious! It’s bad enough I can’t touch her, but now she wants me to put in the effort to sleep with her? Dream on!
Song Yuhang ducked, holding her head, and fled with the coffee cup as if her pants were on fire.
When she came out, breakfast was already on the table. The TV in the living room was on, showing the morning news.
Song Yuhang took the milk out of the microwave and handed it to her. “Here, drink it while it’s hot.”
Lin Yan stared intently at the TV.
“CEO Lin, CEO Lin, Jingtai’s stock price has plummeted recently. Regarding the retail investor who jumped to his death from the roof of the Jingtai Group building yesterday morning, what are your thoughts?”
“CEO Lin, CEO Lin, please say a few words. Regarding the carcinogens7 found in the ‘Yuanyang8‘ brand health products and milk powder sold and exported by your company, what is your opinion?”
“CEO Lin, CEO Lin, please comment on the large number of properties under Jingtai Group being sold off in panic sales?”
“CEO Lin, CEO Lin, there are rumors that a new round of layoffs has begun within the group. Is this true?”
…
At the entrance of the Jingtai Building, Lin Youyuan sat in a wheelchair, besieged by reporters.
Bodyguards protected him as he navigated with difficulty through the crowded throng. Lin Youyuan’s face remained expressionless, but whether it was her imagination or not, she felt he looked a notch older in the high-definition camera footage.
Clearly, when they last met, his temples didn’t have so much white hair. His once bright and resolute eyes now started to avoid the camera. He silently maneuvered his wheelchair inward, his shoulders slumped, his back appearing more stooped.
Jingtai’s security guards ran out, forming a human wall to block the large crowd of reporters outside the glass doors.
And on the steps not far away sat retail investors holding banners demanding Jingtai return their hard-earned money, homebuyers, and family members of the deceased burning paper money in a copper basin, along with some employees tearfully demanding their wages.
The reporters’ cameras swarmed over there in a flash.
Song Yuhang sat down opposite her, subtly blocking her view, and squeezed her hand. “Eat quickly, or you’ll be late for work.”
Lin Yan came back to her senses, nodded, and picked up the remote to turn off the TV. “Okay.”
On the way to the Jiangcheng City Bureau, Song Yuhang was driving. As they passed the Jingtai Group building, she slowed down the car and glanced over. “Want to go down and take a look?”
Lin Yan rustled through the magazine in her hands, sipped her coffee, and a cold sneer tugged at her lips. “Look at what? What does Jingtai’s situation have to do with me?”
Song Yuhang said no more. After dropping Lin Yan off at the city bureau, she returned to her office and made a call to the branch police station in charge of the matter to understand the situation.
“The person indeed jumped from the Jingtai Building, hundreds of eyes saw it. I heard they paid compensation of eight hundred thousand to a million. It was all his hard-earned money for his son’s medical treatment. The money was gone, his son was gone, his wife divorced him, his family was shattered, that’s why…”
The person on the other end paused, seemingly hesitant to continue. “The Economic Crimes Investigation Department has also stepped in. Captain Song can ask them.”
“Alright, I understand. Thank you.” Song Yuhang hung up and immediately called the Economic Crimes Investigation Department.
The reply was that they had already filed a case to investigate Jingtai for a series of illegal business activities, including producing counterfeit and substandard products, suspected illegal fundraising, and financial fraud. The CSRC9 had also entered the group to conduct a thorough investigation.
In the current economic climate, which had not yet fully recovered, such an outcome was undoubtedly adding insult to injury for a company.
Song Yuhang rubbed her brow. “Okay, notify me as soon as there’s a result.”
“Understood, Captain Song.”
The operator at the Economic Crimes Investigation Department hung up, still a bit puzzled. “Didn’t this case get transferred from Criminal Investigation to Economic Crimes in the first place? You’re not the captain of Economic Crimes either, why are you so concerned?”
At lunchtime, Lin Yan didn’t go to the cafeteria. Song Yuhang, afraid she would go hungry, packed a meal to take to her, only to find that she was already eating.
As usual, it was an exquisite meal prepared by a high-end chef; even the tableware delivered was ceramic.
Song Yuhang looked at her own plastic lunchbox, feeling a bit shabby, and hesitated, shrinking back.
Lin Yan sat in her chair, took a few bites, then tossed her chopsticks down. “Not eating anymore. Throw it away.”
Song Yuhang hurried over. “Don’t, what a waste.”
Lin Yan turned her face away. “I’m full anyway. If you haven’t eaten, go ahead.”
Still a slightly awkward display of concern.
Song Yuhang smiled, pulled a chair over from the side and sat down, not minding at all as she picked up Lin Yan’s chopsticks. “How did you know I hadn’t eaten?”
Lin Yan sneered. “The cafeteria opens at twelve. For you to stand out from the lunch rush, finish eating, and get here within five minutes… perhaps only an immortal could manage that.”
Most likely, Song Yuhang had gone to queue early, got her meal, and came straight over.
Seeing that the dishes on the table were all her favorites, Song Yuhang’s eyes crinkled into a smile. Knowing Lin Yan had ordered them specially for her, she picked up a piece of Guobaorou10 and put it in her bowl.

“Try this, it’s really good today.”
“Aiya, I don’t want to eat.” Lin Yan grumbled and complained, but was still fed a few more chopsticks of food.
Seeing her eat a little more made Song Yuhang a bit happier.
The tech investigators had all gone to eat, so there weren’t many people around. Song Yuhang grew a bit bolder, moving closer to her.
“When are you going to the Lin family tonight? Have you bought a birthday gift yet?”
Lin Yan peeled the skin of the steamed purple potato Song Yuhang had brought her. “I’ll go after work. Do I need you to tell me? Meddling in other people’s business.”
“Look, we’re heading to the provincial capital tomorrow. Can I sleep at your place tonight? To save rushing around early in the morning…” Song Yuhang bit her chopsticks, looking at her cautiously.
Lin Yan gave a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Sure, you can still sleep on the sofa.”
“Lin Yan.” Song Yuhang said her name with emphasis. “You know what I’m talking about.”
A light, flirtatious smile played on the little vixen’s lips, that familiar expression of coquetry, feigning ignorance.
“Talking about what? I don’t understand.”
Song Yuhang took a deep breath, held her shoulders, and looked into her eyes, moving closer and closer to those lips.
Their eyes met. Staring into hers for three seconds, the thought of skin-to-skin intimacy brought a flush to Lin Yan’s face, and she hastily averted her gaze.
Song Yuhang chuckled, swallowed, looked around to see no one, and gently lifted her chin. “Duplicitous. You’re clearly thinking about it too.”
“I—”
Before she could refute, Song Yuhang closed her eyes slightly and leaned in.
“Aima11! I’m in the wrong set!” Duan Cheng, holding a lunchbox, had just stepped in, then yelped and shrank back, covering his eyes and retreating, stumbling over several tech investigators in the process.
All eyes turned to them.
Lin Yan’s face flushed crimson. She pushed Song Yuhang away, tossed out an “I’m full!”, and ran into the lab.
Song Yuhang was on the verge of tears. So close, aaahhh!
Her heart was roaring, but her face remained as calm as usual.
“What did you see?”
Several people shook their heads in unison. “We didn’t see anything.”
Song Yuhang chuckled under her breath and stood up. “There’s still Dongpo pork knuckle12, braised pork belly13, and grilled wings14 here. Lin Yan didn’t touch them. You guys can have them. I’m heading back to Criminal Investigation.”

Finally, she turned back and added, “Remember to knock when you come in next time!”
Duan Cheng, his mouth stuffed with braised pork, was on the verge of tears. He’d never heard of having to knock to enter his own office.
Well, what could he do? It was all for the boss’s happiness.
In the afternoon, she had an impromptu guidance meeting at a branch station.
By the time she came out of the branch police station, the sun was setting. Song Yuhang said to the accompanying people, “You guys head back first, I’ll wander around a bit more by myself.”
It was already around closing time by usual standards, so her colleagues dispersed. Song Yuhang went to the bank alone, withdrew some money, and took a taxi to the largest shopping mall in the city.
The last time she and Lin Yan had come here to buy clothes, Lin Yan’s gaze had briefly lingered on a diamond ring in a display window before she pulled her away.
Song Yuhang arrived at the familiar counter.
“Hello, I’d like to see this model.”
The saleslady helped her take it out, her words sweet as honey. “Miss, you have excellent taste! This is this year’s latest model, white 18K gold, marquise-cut diamond, total weight 4.59 carats. See how the edges and corners look like a little butterfly about to take flight? The symbolism is particularly good! Many newlyweds buy this pair for proposals! And recently, the autumn-winter season discount is especially big. The original price was forty-five wan15 a pair, but now you can get it for just thirty-nine wan!”
The saleslady chattered on, “Miss, you must be here with your boyfriend. Wishing you a happy marriage in advance…”
Song Yuhang slipped the ring onto her finger and wiggled it, a slightly pleased smile on her lips. “Nope, buying it for my girlfriend.”
Lest Lin Yan often complain that she only knew cheesy pick-up lines and lacked a sense of ceremony.
The smile on the saleslady’s face froze, like a TV screen lagging. “Hehehe, you’re quite the joker.”
Song Yuhang took out her wallet from her jacket pocket and handed over her bank card. “The size isn’t quite right. Can it be custom-made?”
The saleslady’s eyes widened in surprise. After a moment, she regained her composure, her smile becoming even more sincere and professional. “Yes, yes, of course. Please leave your name and phone number, fill out a form, and pay half the deposit first. The other half can be paid in a fortnight when you come to pick up the ring after trying it on.”
Song Yuhang nodded readily and wrote down the detailed size information on the paper handed to her—Lin Yan’s, she had measured it long ago while she was asleep.
The thought that soon she could put the ring on Lin Yan’s finger and officially declare her as her fiancée brought an irrepressible excitement to Song Yuhang’s face. However, looking at the bill the saleslady handed over, a faint sense of helplessness also surfaced.
A ring costing nearly forty wan had almost emptied more than half of her savings, including the inheritance and pension left by her father.
If she had known, she would have desperately climbed the ranks in the past two years, then she wouldn’t be so financially strained now when wanting to get married.
Song Yuhang clutched the receipt the saleslady gave her, carefully tucked it into her wallet, put it in her jacket pocket, and pushed open the mall doors.
When Lin Yan got off work, she habitually glanced back; no one had followed her out.
The driver was urging her, “Miss, we can’t park here. We should go.”
Lin Yan came back to her senses and got in. The driver closed the car door for her.
“Are all the gifts I prepared taken?”
The driver turned around and said respectfully, “They’re all in the trunk, Miss.”
Lin Yan nodded. They drove in silence and soon arrived at the Lin residence.
Lin Ge was at the manor gate welcoming today’s guests. When he saw her car arrive, his eyes instantly lit up. He handed the wine glass in his hand to a servant and went up to greet her.
“You’re here.”
Lin Yan nodded, taking off her sunglasses to reveal a beautiful face. A slight curve touched her lips as she watched the driver hand the gifts to a nearby butler to take inside.
“Where’s Auntie? I’ll go see her.”
The Lin family manor was much larger than her villa, consisting of several buildings, and even had an internal golf course, bowling alley, outdoor swimming pool, and so on. Behind the manor was an orchard where she often got lost in her youth.
To the east was Lin Youyuan’s residence, a separate villa enclosed by a carved fence. The lights were off, and it was quiet.
To the west was Lin Ge’s family residence, currently brightly lit. A red carpet was laid out at the villa entrance, adorned with balloons and ribbons, as well as flower baskets sent by business partners for the birthday celebration.
“She’s inside. I’ll take you in.” Lin Ge led her inside, chuckling when he saw her keep glancing towards the east.
“Don’t look. Uncle Lin isn’t here today. Something happened with Jingtai, so he hasn’t been back recently.”
Lin Yan subtly breathed a sigh of relief, yet for some reason, felt a twinge of unease.
If Jingtai collapsed, shouldn’t she be happy?
With such complex thoughts, she saw her aunt, whom she hadn’t met for many days.
Mother Lin sat on the sofa, chatting and laughing with a few old friends. She wore a warm woolen hat, and though the heating in the room made it very warm—Lin Yan had taken off her coat as soon as she entered—she was still wearing thick clothes, likely due to poor health.
Lin Yan watched from a distance, her heart aching. She quickened her pace and called out, “Auntie.”
Mother Lin looked up from her conversation with her friends. Seeing it was her, her eyes instantly warmed, and old tears streamed down her face.
“Yanyan, Yanyan, our Yanyan is back… Quick, sit, sit down.”
She greeted her as warmly as she did when Lin Yan was a child.
However, as she stood up, her body swayed slightly. Lin Ge rushed over with quick hands and sharp eyes to steady her. “Mom, don’t get excited. Sit down and talk.”
Mother Lin glanced at her son, then at Lin Yan, and immediately calmed down a lot. She wiped away her tears and sat down with his help, taking Lin Yan’s hand and making customary small talk.
“How is your body? You were badly injured last time. Auntie wanted to visit you, but Lin Ge insisted on stopping me, saying my health wasn’t good either, and wouldn’t let me go.”
Lin Ge smiled beside her. “Mom, have some tea.”
“I should be the one asking you that. I haven’t come to see you all this time…” Lin Yan held her rough, age-spotted hand, feeling a mix of emotions.
“It was my oversight.”
She didn’t want to make Mother Lin too sad; after all, a patient’s mood was most important. So, she forced a smile and deliberately spoke in a light and cheerful tone.
“Look, I brought you lots of good things this time. Ginseng, Ganoderma, Ejiao16—they’re best for nourishing Qi and beauty.”
“And this scarf, cashmere, the latest style. I bought it and couldn’t even bear to wear it myself, so I brought it for you.”
“This jade bracelet’s quality is also particularly good. The moment I saw it, I thought it suited you perfectly.”
When Lin Yan wanted to be good to someone, it all depended on her willingness. If she was willing, she could pour out her heart and soul, even put in ten times the effort17 to repay those who had shown her kindness.
Mother Lin shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes again as she held Lin Yan’s hand. “Just you coming to see me makes Auntie especially happy. You’re out there alone, don’t always spend so much money. After all, you’re a young woman; having some money on hand will prevent people from bullying you.”
Lin Yan nodded. “Mhm, you know, I really don’t lack money—”
Her own businesses were more than enough to support her.
Mother Lin moved her lips, wanting to say more, but Lin Ge gently took the teacup from her hand and helped her up.
“Mom, you should go back to your room to take your medicine and rest for a while. The private doctor is already waiting for you.”
Mother Lin looked back at Lin Yan, a hint of reluctance in her eyes. “Yanyan…”
Lin Yan stood up and watched her leave, supported by Lin Ge and the private doctor. “It’s alright, Auntie. Go ahead. Take your medicine first. I’ll come up to see you later.”
Tears instantly welled up in Mother Lin’s eyes, along with a fleeting glimpse of sorrow.
Lin Yan was slightly taken aback. By the time she tried to see clearly, Lin Ge had already helped her away.
She sipped her red wine, suppressing the faint unease in her heart.
At that time, she thought Mother Lin’s gaze meant she couldn’t bear to part with her. Only later did she understand. The meaning that gaze had wanted to convey was simply that she was asking her for help.
