    My Bride

Amid the chaotic din, only one person heard exactly what Mu Ning had said.

That person was Luo Yan, who stood protected by the rest of the Luo family, her heavily pregnant belly protruding. All this time, she had been staring at Mu Ning with eyes full of jealousy and resentment.

“What did you say?! You vixen1! You’re just a homewrecker stepping into someone else’s relationship!” Hearing Mu Ning declare that she would not get a divorce, Luo Yan, who had been holding her stomach in silence, erupted. She screamed in rage at Ren Chenxi, “Zhou Zhilong! Fucking say something! What did all those things you said about liking me and loving me even mean?! Look at me! I’m even carrying your child!”

The “Zhou Zhilong” addressed by Luo Yan shrugged helplessly at her and replied in her own voice, “Though I sympathize with you… I’m not Zhou Zhilong.”

It was clearly Zhou Zhilong’s face, but the voice that came out of it belonged to a strange woman. Instantly, everyone brawling in the room fell silent, staring at Ren Chenxi in shock. The Zhou family, in particular, looked utterly dumbfounded.

“Long… Longlong, what’s… what’s wrong with your voice?”

“Tsk, I already said I’m not Zhou Zhilong…” Ren Chenxi shrugged with complete indifference. “Don’t rush. You’ll see the truth in just a second~”

    Just as Ren Chenxi finished speaking, Mu Ning cooperatively began a countdown: “10, 9, 8… 3, 2, 1, 0!”

When the countdown ended, “Zhou Zhilong’s” entire face began to blur. Underneath that shifting, hazy layer, however, another face was gradually coming into focus. When everyone looked closer, they were shocked to realize it was the face of a woman!

“Ah! You… You’re…” The Zhou family was completely unfamiliar with Ren Chenxi, but Mu Ning’s cousin, who had accompanied Zhou Zhilong to Nanhai Base, had seen her before. After all, a beautiful woman always left a lasting impression.

“Who is this woman?! Where is Zhou Zhilong?! Where is he?!” Seeing “Zhou Zhilong” suddenly turn into a woman, Luo Yan, holding her swollen belly, became even more hysterical than the Zhou family.

“Where is Zhou Zhilong? Hmm… Let me think… Maybe he’s been chewed clean by mutated beasts or zombies?” As Ren Chenxi spoke, she gave Luo Yan an apologetic smile. “I’m really sorry about that. Your child will be born without a father.”

Ren Chenxi believed she had spoken with absolute sincerity and that her apology was thoroughly genuine. To everyone else, however, it sounded like pure, unadulterated provocation.

“You’re lying! Zhou Zhilong is a 6th-order esper! How could he be eaten by mutated beasts or zombies so easily?! I get it! You’re just another one of his mistresses, aren’t you? Fine! Another vixen! But let me tell you, no matter how you try to seduce him, it’s useless! I’m the one carrying his child!”

Mother Zhou, who had initially been about to fly into a rage upon hearing Ren Chenxi say her son had been fed to mutated beasts and zombies, paused after listening to Luo Yan. Connecting it with how familiar Mu Ning’s cousin seemed with this girl, and knowing her son’s wretched track record, she immediately assumed Ren Chenxi was joking. Suppressing her anger, she forced a warm, gentle expression onto her face and spoke to the girl in a coaxing tone: “My dear, I don’t know which family you belong to, and I am truly sorry. I don’t know what Longlong told you, but he’s married now. His bride is the one standing right beside you…”

“Actually, that’s not right~” Wearing an equally fake smile, Ren Chenxi rudely cut Mother Zhou off. “The beautiful woman beside me is my bride~ Didn’t all of you just witness our wedding a moment ago? We even received your blessings~”

“Stop talking nonsense, girl!” Although Father Zhou tried his best to keep his expression from turning too ferocious, his tone was stiff and harsh, as if he were about to strike her. “You are both women! What kind of marriage is that?! Besides, the one marrying Ningning was clearly my son…” Halfway through his sentence, Father Zhou suddenly recalled the way this woman’s face had changed. In other words, during the wedding just now, this woman had indeed used his son’s face to marry the Mu family’s daughter!

“You wretched girl! Is your ability disguise?! Speak—where did our Longlong go?!”

“Exactly! Where on earth did Zhou Zhilong go?!” Luo Yan chimed in anxiously right after Father Zhou.

“I already told you! Zhou Zhilong is dead! Why won’t you believe me?” Ren Chenxi wore a perfectly innocent expression while delivering a truth that was incredibly brutal to the Zhou family. It was a truth they simply refused to accept, and neither did Luo Yan.

Bitch2! I’m warning you, tell me where Zhou Zhilong is right now, or don’t blame me for getting rough with you!”

“Wretched girl, don’t refuse a toast only to drink a forfeit3!” Father Zhou warned, his voice dark and menacing.

“Tsk, tsk, tsk. Honestly, you people… I’ve told you the truth, yet you keep pushing me like this? Well… Since you want to get rough, maybe I should show you some color4, too?” As Ren Chenxi spoke, she carefully shielded Mu Ning, who was temporarily unable to use her esper abilities, behind her.

“Heh heh heh, what kind of color? I’d certainly love to see it for myself, little beauty~”

No sooner had Ren Chenxi finished speaking than a greasy-looking man eagerly stepped forward. Despite his vulgar appearance, he was actually a 5th-order esper. In his eyes, Mu Ning’s abilities were suppressed, and this face-changing woman was merely a 5th-order esper like himself—perhaps without any combat abilities at all. For a strength esper like him, wouldn’t dealing with a little girl be as easy as reaching out his hand5? Perhaps, once he subdued her, he could even enjoy a few extra fringe benefits along the way!

The more the greasy man thought about it, the more excited he became. He couldn’t resist taking a giant stride toward Ren Chenxi. But just as his foot landed, Mu Ning’s cousin suddenly shouted from the side, “Be careful! She’s not from A City—she’s from Nanhai Base!”

Someone from Nanhai Base? Why would she have come all the way to Ning’an Base?

While the crowd was still whispering in confusion, the head of the 5th-order strength esper who was about to attack Ren Chenxi suddenly exploded into a mist of blood out of thin air. The few people standing closest to him were instantly splattered with flecks of crimson.

    “Your… Your ability…”

Wasn’t this wretched girl’s ability supposed to be disguise? What kind of power had she just used? Was she a dual-system esper? But they hadn’t even seen her make a move!

Father Zhou had secretly been looking forward to watching Ren Chenxi get thoroughly beaten so he could step in to play the good guy, which would then allow him to pry his son’s whereabouts out of her. Who could have imagined that despite both being 5th-order espers, one would instantly slaughter the other in a literal heartbeat!

This wretched girl’s ability was incredibly bizarre!

For a moment, the entire room fell dead silent. Even those with blood splattered across their faces only took a few cautious steps back. This was the apocalypse—everyone present had survived through relentless bloodshed and violence, so no one was particularly afraid of a corpse. What truly terrified them was dying like this: suddenly, without warning, and without even the slightest chance to fight back, their heads simply exploding.

“Hey! You…” Only after a long while did Luo Yan find her voice, warning Ren Chenxi with a trembling tone, “Killing is forbidden in our base! Doing this… this means you should be thrown into prison!”

Ning’an Base was controlled by the military, so it naturally possessed a strict set of laws and a prison to lock up offenders. No sooner had Luo Yan finished speaking than several people in the crowd began shouting in agreement. “Right, right, right! We need to go get the soldiers right now!”

Meanwhile, taking advantage of the chaotic shouting, Father Zhou whispered to his subordinate, “Hurry up and call Cai Ping over!”

Ren Chenxi watched Father Zhou’s sneaky maneuvers with a cold eye, then turned back to Luo Yan. “First of all, didn’t your guy try to attack me first? This was purely self-defense. Second, I don’t belong to your Ning’an Base, so your rules don’t apply to me!”

In any case, she had accumulated a vast hoard of system cards, including plenty of SSR Advanced Shield Cards. Even if they mobilized the entire military presence of Ning’an Base against her, Ren Chenxi wouldn’t feel the slightest shred of fear.

Ultimately, however, the military never showed up. It was unclear whether the Zhou family had reservations or other motives, but the only ones who ended up rushing over were Cai Ping and several other 6th-order espers.

“Oh, Master Zhou, aren’t you celebrating a wedding today? Calling me over in such a frantic rush… It doesn’t look like you’re inviting me for wedding wine~” After all, there was a headless corpse lying in plain sight on the floor, which was impossible to ignore. Speaking of headless corpses… “By the way, someone was killed in our base a few days ago, and their head was missing too. We still haven’t figured out who that was…”

Because of Cai Ping’s casual remark, Mother Zhou and Luo Yan turned deathly pale in an instant. Father Zhou’s eyes bulged as he pointed a trembling finger at Ren Chenxi. “It… It was you…”

“Congratulations~ You guessed right~” Met with a roomful of murderous glares, Ren Chenxi smiled and lightly clapped her hands. “By the way, let me tell you a secret: that headless corpse indeed belonged to Zhou Zhilong. But didn’t your base’s patrol dump it outside afterwards? So whether he was eaten by mutated beasts or zombies, I’m not entirely sure. I did tell you that right from the start, didn’t I~”

Seeing how flagrantly arrogant Ren Chenxi was being, Father Zhou was seized by a fit of violent coughing. The moment he managed to stop, he barked at Cai Ping, “I’ll give you—I’ll give you one million crystal cores! Just restrain this wretched girl for me!”

“My, my, my, your Zhou family has really become my biggest client lately. And look, another gorgeous beauty! Does your family have some kind of genetic issue where none of you know how to have pity on fragrance and cherish jade6?” Even though he now knew that both the headless corpse on the floor and the one found in the base were Ren Chenxi’s handiwork, Cai Ping still didn’t take her seriously. He simply swept his filthy, repulsive gaze up and down her body before offering a hypocritical apology. “My apologies, gorgeous. Although your Ping-ge knows how to have pity on fragrance and cherish jade, well… No matter how beautiful a woman is, she’s much more lovable when she behaves. If she’s too venomous…”

As Cai Ping spoke, he extended a hand toward Ren Chenxi, palm facing her, a confident smirk playing on his lips.

“A woman who is too venomous needs to be tied up tight and properly disciplined~ Master Zhou, you wouldn’t mind… letting me do the honors, would you?”

“I! Do! Not!” Father Zhou spat, glaring at Ren Chenxi with raw hatred. “Torture this wretched girl as brutally as you like! Just make sure you force her to spit out the truth—is that headless corpse in the base really my… my son?! And find out exactly what kind of ability she’s using!”

“Mmh~ Of course~ Rest assured, Master Zhou, I will make absolutely sure to give this beauty a thorough… interrogation~” Cai Ping turned and gestured casually to the 6th-order espers behind him. “Alright, seize her~”

The instant the words left Cai Ping’s mouth, the 6th-order espers lunged toward Ren Chenxi, eager to capture her. However, before the fastest of them could even get close, his head exploded into a gory burst—exactly like the 5th-order strength esper before him.
