    Conflict

“Hold on. The twenty-one of us are supposed to squeeze into this single bus all the way to Ning’an Base?” Chen Gu stared at Mu Ning’s two biaodi, his face a picture of sheer disbelief.

“Don’t you have a double-decker bus? If you pack in, you can definitely fit, right?” Mu Ning’s biaodi said, taking it completely for granted.

“That’s hilarious. Isn’t your RV even bigger? Why don’t you free up some space for us?” Originally, because of Zhou Zhilong, Chen Gu hadn’t had a bad impression of these people from A City. Even though they were here to take the Boss away, Chen Gu had only been anxious about whether she would abandon them, not resentful of those who were taking her. But who would have expected…

“Hey, hey, hey, you’ve really got some nerve! Our RV is our own. Why on earth should we share it with you country bumpkins—er—”

Although this biaodi cut himself off under a harsh glare from Zhou Zhilong, the words had already registered loud and clear with Chen Gu and his group.

    “Heh, country bumpkins, is it?”

Chen Gu wasn’t surprised at all to hear such words slip from the mouth of Mu Ning’s biaodi. After all, although these people had seemed quite polite at first, the arrogance deep in their bones was impossible to suppress. Well, except for the Boss’s fiancé, who maintained a somewhat decent attitude. But the fiancé’s pleasant demeanor didn’t represent the attitude of the entire group!

“Tsk, tsk, tsk. Looking down on us already? If we really follow the Boss to A City and end up on their turf, who knows what kind of trouble we’ll face!”

The moment Chen Gu’s voice fell, not only did the expressions of Mu Ning’s group darken, but those on Zhou Zhilong’s side also stopped bothering to put on a friendly show. Ignoring Zhou Zhilong’s attempts to stop them, one of the 5th-Order espers bluntly lashed out.

“What? Did we say anything wrong? You’re just a bunch of country bumpkins from some tiny seaside base. We only came to pick up Young Master Zhou’s fiancée. You lot are just trying to ride her coattails to enjoy an easy life at Ning’an Base. We didn’t even say anything about you lot taking advantage of the situation, yet here you are, pushing your luck and trying to squeeze into our living space? Tsk, tsk, tsk. Country bumpkins really have no class!”

These espers from Ning’an Base, the strongest base in the apocalypse, naturally carried an innate sense of superiority when dealing with survivors from this third-tier southern base. To them, Ning’an Base was a place that survivors from other bases would scramble and fight to enter. Getting into Ning’an Base was no easy feat nowadays; to enter, one had to hand over a fixed amount of crystal cores or resources. These country bumpkins had already taken advantage of Young Master Zhou’s fiancée to get a free pass into Ning’an Base, yet they still had the gall to demand more? They had specifically chosen such a large RV to make their journey more comfortable; if they had to cram more people in now, let alone comfort, they would probably be disgusted to death by these country bumpkins the entire way back!

To defend their last territory of comfort, even if it went against Young Master Zhou’s wishes, they would absolutely not allow this group of country bumpkins to step onto their RV. Besides… who was to say they were even defying Young Master Zhou’s wishes? Didn’t they see that although Young Master Zhou was criticizing them, he hadn’t made any move to stop them? After all, if anyone had dared to oppose Young Master Zhou in the past, he wouldn’t have just given them a mild verbal warning; he would have taken action directly, swiftly ending the life of anyone who dared to defy him.

And so, once one person spoke up, several others chimed in one after another. In short, after all their back-and-forth, their stance was clear: it was fine to bring Mu Ning’s friends along, but they would absolutely not give up any space in their own RV to carry them.

Chen Gu and his group of guys tightly suppressed their rage. Listening to these self-righteous insults, the veins on their temples bulged. Honestly, if it weren’t out of respect for the Boss, they would’ve already beaten them up!

By the time these people finished their long-winded, superior ranting, Zhang Tongqi, Chen Gu, and the rest of the group had already completely abandoned any thoughts of following the Boss to Ning’an Base. At the same time, they made up their minds to act pitiful in all sorts of ways to try and keep the Boss at Nanhai Base.

However, before Chen Gu and his group could even start complaining or trying to play the victim, Mu Ning took a step forward and spoke first, coldly asking Zhou Zhilong: “So, this is the kind of attitude you have when inviting my friends to Ning’an Base?”

“Huh?” Mu Ning’s sudden questioning caught Zhou Zhilong off guard for a moment.

“If I remember correctly, my friends have never once mentioned wanting to go to Ning’an Base, have they? Weren’t you the one who took the initiative to invite them? Since my friends are distinguished guests invited by you, at least show the proper attitude of a host. What is with this high-and-mighty attitude?”

    “…”

Now, Zhou Zhilong finally understood that Mu Ning was unhappy with him because of his people’s attitude. Utterly useless fools, good for nothing but ruining things! Taking advantage of Mu Ning not paying attention, Zhou Zhilong glared fiercely at those espers, then quickly adjusted his expression and apologized to Mu Ning in an even gentler tone.

“Ningning, I’m sorry. It’s my friends who went too far. Clearly, I was the one who invited your friends, yet they had to behave like this…” Zhou Zhilong paused, giving the group of espers a warning look. “Why aren’t you apologizing to my fiancée right now?”

“Ah! Right, right, right, it’s our fault! Sister-in-law, we—”

    Smack!

Before they could get their apologies out, Mu Ning suddenly lashed out with a thick, long vine, striking the ground heavily. The sudden display sent the men stumbling back a step in unison. Before they could even ask what kind of madness had suddenly possessed her, Mu Ning snapped her whip again, saying coldly: “You shouldn’t be apologizing to me, should you? The ones you insulted are my friends!”

    “…”

If it was apologizing to Young Master Zhou’s fiancée, they could still bring themselves to do it. No matter what, they had to show some respect for Young Master Zhou, and she was a 6th-Order esper in her own right. But… apologizing to these country bumpkins?

These high-and-mighty espers from Ning’an Base looked at each other, their expressions turning even more sour. But under the weight of Young Master Zhou’s cold gaze, they could only suppress their resentment and turn to face Chen Gu and the others, feeling deeply aggrieved. Just as they were about to casually mumble “sorry,” Mu Ning lashed her whip out once more. This time, the force was so immense it ripped a deep, narrow trench into the ground right before their feet.

“Forget it. With that kind of attitude, even if you did apologize, my friends wouldn’t accept it. You’re nothing but a pack of running dogs—yet here you are on someone else’s turf, looking down on others with dog’s eyes1!”

Now, even Mu Ning’s status as Zhou Zhilong’s fiancée was no longer of any use.

“Hey, hey, hey! Miss Mu! Watch your tongue! We were invited by Young Master Zhou to protect you and escort you back to A City. You—”

“Every other sentence is ‘Young Master Zhou’. If you’re not running dogs, what are you?” Mu Ning sneered. “Even your master treats me with absolute respect. What are you acting up for? Zhou Zhilong, is this the standard of the lackeys you’ve found?”

    “…”

Very well. They had only called these people country bumpkins, but they had ended up branded as lackeys. At this point, no matter how much face they had to give Young Master Zhou, they refused to tolerate this any longer!

“Hey, you woman! Don’t think we won’t dare to beat you just because you’re Young Master Zhou’s fiancée!”

“Heh, you damn lackeys, do you even have the ability?!”

Seeing Mu Ning’s incredibly blunt attitude toward these people, Chen Gu and his group stopped bottling up their anger as well. One by one, they rolled up their sleeves, ready to have a big fight at any moment.

“Pah! Just a few 3rd-Order and 4th-Order trash, and you want to challenge us? Are you tired of living?”

The ready-to-fight attitude of Chen Gu and his group immediately made these self-important 5th-Order espers feel provoked. When it came to Mu Ning, they might still have some misgivings due to Zhou Zhilong and her own esper level, but they wouldn’t go easy on Chen Gu. Immediately, a size-mutation esper let out a roar, transforming into a giant nearly three meters tall, and swung a massive fist toward Chen Gu’s group.

However, before his fist could strike down, a tiny ice spike collided with it. Such a small ice spike looked like a peanut compared to that massive fist. Just as a mocking smirk appeared on the big guy’s face, in the next second, his fist instantly froze. Before the big guy could even feel fear, he watched helplessly as the ice on his fist spread toward his entire body at extreme speed. In just a few seconds, he was completely frozen into a giant ice sculpture.

    “Ningning! You! Why did you…”

Zhou Zhilong, who had been paying close attention to Mu Ning, naturally saw that she was the one who threw that tiny ice spike. Zhou Zhilong was furious. No matter what, even if these people’s attitude was a bit poor, they were still his men. As his fiancée, it was one thing for Mu Ning not to give him any face from the start, but now she was actually killing someone right in front of him! If he didn’t still need to coax her back to Ning’an Base with sweet words, he would have definitely taught this woman a lesson she wouldn’t forget! He would make her remember that once she married him, she should regard him as her heaven, and she was never to cross him!

    Still… this woman’s ability… seems pretty good?

While Zhou Zhilong was secretly pondering Mu Ning’s ability, Mu Ning shrugged indifferently, her cold eyes sweeping over the Ning’an Base espers who had become somewhat wary of her. She warned in a low voice: “Has anyone ever taught you? If your strength is lacking, when you arrive on someone else’s turf, you’d better behave yourselves and be polite. Otherwise, whether you can go back in one piece… I can’t guarantee!”

Mu Ning’s words immediately sent a chill down the spines of these espers who had been looking down on everyone with dog’s eyes.

Exactly. Even if they came from the nation’s strongest Ning’an Base, and even if their esper levels were higher than those of most espers in this tiny, rural base… they only had ten people! And now, there were only nine left! If they truly offended everyone in this base to death, no matter how powerful the nine of them were, they would never be a match for an entire base’s worth of espers, would they? Besides…

They couldn’t see through the strength of Young Master Zhou’s fiancée at all! She was clearly at the same esper level as Young Master Zhou, yet in such a short instant, she had finished off Chen Jie, their 5th-Order size-mutation esper. You had to know that Chen Jie’s ability wasn’t just growing in size; as his esper level increased, his defensive capability also enhanced along with it! Yet in that brief moment, this woman hadn’t even given Chen Jie time to react before directly freezing his nearly three-meter-tall body completely solid!

If this was used against those of them with even weaker defenses…

For a moment, the noble Ning’an Base crowd who had been incredibly arrogant and overbearing finally quieted down completely.
