    Shock

    “Mu Ning!”

At the exact moment Ren Chenxi turned around, she saw it happen—two massive bird claws viciously pierced straight through both of Mu Ning’s shoulders.

Mu Ning’s reaction was swift. Even with both her shoulders locked in the bird’s tight grip, her face deathly pale and cold sweat beading on her forehead, she endured the agonizing pain, raised her hands, and instantly unleashed her vines to fiercely bind the giant bird atop her shoulders. Dozens of vines tangled tightly around the mutated bird’s wings, restricting its ability to flap and launch wind blades.

Seeing the large patch of blood staining Mu Ning’s clothes and the blood seeping from her tightly bitten lower lip, a layer of blood-red clouded Ren Chenxi’s eyes as well.

    “Bastard!”

Ren Chenxi glared fiercely at the still-struggling mutated bird. Moving at her fastest speed, she pulled the last SSR Shield Card from her inventory and threw it directly onto Mu Ning. At the same time, after applying an SSR Critical Hit Card to herself, she rapidly fired an SSR Explosion Card at the 8th-order mutated bird.

The 8th-order mutated bird’s initial target had been Ren Chenxi, the one who killed the 7th-order mutated bird. However, thanks to the protective shield, Ren Chenxi had blocked the 8th-order mutated bird’s first wave of attacks. She barely dodged its second wave of attacks thanks to Mu Ning’s push. By the time it wanted to launch a third wave at Ren Chenxi, its wings were tightly bound by Mu Ning’s vines. In a state of extreme fury, the 8th-order mutated bird intended to crush the shoulders of the puny human beneath its claws before going after Ren Chenxi again. But instead, it felt as though the sharp talons that had already pierced deep into flesh and blood suddenly met a force of resistance, slowly pushing its claws outward.

Just as the 8th-order mutated bird looked down in confusion to see what was happening, in that single instant it lowered its head, its massive skull suddenly exploded into a mist of blood.

The drifting mist of blood rained down entirely onto Mu Ning beneath the 8th-order mutated bird. Her fair face, originally so pale it lacked a trace of color, was now splattered with these spots of red. Without its head, the enormous corpse of the mutated bird crashed down heavily onto Mu Ning in that same instant. Seeing Mu Ning’s slender figure suddenly swallowed up beneath the mutated bird’s corpse, Ren Chenxi felt an overwhelming wave of despair completely submerge her.

She stared blankly at the spot where the mutated bird had crashed down, her legs trembling so much she could barely take a step. Just as she staggered two paces toward where Mu Ning was buried, the tightly shut iron door was violently pushed open with a loud bang. A group of girls, including Zhang Tongqi and Wu Tong, brandishing machetes and casting esper abilities, charged toward the mutated bird’s corpse even faster than Ren Chenxi.

“Boss! Boss, how are you doing!”

“Mu xuejie, Mu xuejie, say something!”

Amidst the crowd’s tearful shouting, Ren Chenxi’s heart gradually sank. She stared fixedly at the mutated bird’s corpse, watching the girls laboriously push and lift. Finally, Lu Ping heaved with both hands, successfully hoisting the mutated bird’s body about half a person’s height into the air. Even a strength esper who had already advanced to the 3rd-order like Lu Ping could only lift the massive corpse this high.

The anticipated sight of Mu Ning being severely crushed or even reduced to a terrifying corpse did not appear. When Zhang Tongqi nervously leaned down and peeked underneath to check on Mu Ning’s condition, she met Mu Ning’s open eyes.

“So loud. I’m not dead, what are you crying for!”

Mu Ning’s voice was very low and feeble. What should have been an imposing scolding sounded soft and utterly harmless right now. However, it was exactly this weak, soft voice that made Ren Chenxi’s legs instantly give out, making her collapse onto the ground.

Thank goodness, Mu Ning wasn’t dead!

By this time, the densely packed mutated birds on the roof had all scattered. Without the control of the two high-order mutated birds, they were no longer mindlessly, frantically attacking the base’s buildings and humans at the cost of their own lives. With the high walls blocking the view, the boys next door had not yet noticed the anomaly on the roof of the Girls’ Building.

While most people in the base were busy cleaning up the aftermath, the girls frantically worked together, using all their might to heave the mutated bird’s corpse higher. They anxiously debated how to pull Mu Ning, whose shoulders were severely injured, out from under the carcass. From the girls’ perspective, it only looked as though Mu Ning’s lower legs were still firmly pinned under the mutated bird’s corpse. They completely failed to notice that between Mu Ning’s legs and the bird’s corpse, there was still a thin gap.

While the girls were endlessly chattering away, Ren Chenxi had already steadied her emotions. Carefully propping herself up with her uninjured arm, she walked straight toward Mu Ning. While the girls were still struggling to drag the mutated bird’s corpse away, Ren Chenxi simply pressed her hand onto the carcass. The heavy weight in the girls’ hands instantly vanished. A few of the girls, having been pulling too hard, directly tumbled backward.

    “Eh? What happened?”

Just as everyone stared blankly at their empty hands with confused expressions, Jian Dan, who happened to see Ren Chenxi walk up beside her, was the first to react. “Ah! The mutated bird’s corpse was taken into Xi-jie’s inventory~”

With Jian Dan calling it out, everyone finally remembered: Right! With a spatial esper right here, why were they just working themselves to the bone doing useless labor!

Once the mutated bird’s corpse was stored in the inventory, everyone could see Mu Ning’s condition much more clearly. As Mu Ning lay stiffly on the ground, the injuries on her shoulders were the most severe on her entire body. Her legs, which everyone thought might have been broken by the mutated bird’s corpse, were perfectly fine without a single scratch.

As Zhang Tongqi carefully helped Mu Ning sit up, she asked curiously, “Boss, that mutated bird’s corpse is so huge and heavy that not even Lu Ping could move it directly. How come you seem perfectly fine after being crushed by it?”

With Zhang Tongqi’s help, Mu Ning struggled to prop up her upper body. She then stared fixedly at Ren Chenxi. As if seeing through the unease beneath Ren Chenxi’s pale complexion, she forced out a comforting smile and said, “Maybe it’s because my ice shield’s defense is high?”

“But Boss, your ice shield didn’t block that mutated bird’s claws… just look at the injuries on your shoulders…” Sun Jia looked at the deep, bone-exposing claw wounds on Mu Ning’s shoulders, unable to bear the sight. This was even more severe than when she herself had been bitten by a zombie! At least back then, her arm hadn’t been completely pierced through by the zombie’s rotting teeth! “Xi… Xi-jie, with the Boss’s injuries being this bad, will your wound medicine…”

“Don’t worry, it’s fine. My wound medicine is very effective! Have you forgotten? My shoulder was also bitten by a mutated wolf back then, and aren’t I perfectly fine now?”

With Ren Chenxi saying this, the girls immediately felt relieved. The efficacy of Xi-jie’s wound medicine was simply incredible. Leaving aside Xi-jie’s own past shoulder injury, just looking at the terrifying tear on Xiao Jia’s arm—now there was only a tiny, shallow scar left. If you didn’t look closely, you couldn’t even see it at all.

Because the girls simply trusted Ren Chenxi’s potent wound medicine, they were no longer quite as nervous about Mu Ning’s shoulder injuries. In contrast, Ren Chenxi’s emotions were far more complicated regarding Mu Ning getting hurt once again. This time, Mu Ning had been clawed by the mutated bird again just to save her. Even though the mutated bird’s initial attack target was only her, this person… she owed her a life again.

Sighing softly, Ren Chenxi pulled out bandages and wound medicine powder from her inventory, while also taking the opportunity to apply two Recovery Cards to Mu Ning. Although Mu Ning had only taken two claw strikes from the 8th-order mutated bird, it was exactly the injuries caused by these two strikes to her shoulders that directly wiped out more than half of her HP. Although a single Recovery Card was enough to fill Mu Ning’s health bar, considering that her bleeding hadn’t stopped yet and the injuries were so severe—coupled with the fact that the Recovery Card’s healing speed was so slow—in her desperation, Ren Chenxi recklessly threw two Recovery Cards onto Mu Ning.

Mu Ning noticed Ren Chenxi’s subtle gesture of flicking a card and instantly understood that Ren Chenxi had definitely applied some sort of card to her again. She didn’t know if it was an illusion, but Mu Ning felt that after Ren Chenxi made that card-flicking motion, the pain from the wounds on her shoulders didn’t seem as intense anymore. At the same time, however, Mu Ning also noticed the row of bloody wounds on Ren Chenxi’s left arm.

“N-No need to mind me, first bandage up Xi… Ren Chenxi…”

When Sun Jia tried to cut away some of the fabric around Mu Ning’s shoulders to clean her wounds, she was rejected by Mu Ning. And with Mu Ning pointing it out, the girls finally realized that the incredibly powerful Xi-jie was actually injured too?

One couldn’t blame the girls for deifying Ren Chenxi. It was simply because just now, while hiding behind the iron door and looking through that small crack, they had seen with their own eyes how Ren Chenxi had instantly blown up the head of the 7th-order mutated bird with just a lift of her hand. And then, with yet another lift of her hand, the head of the 8th-order mutated bird gripping Mu Ning had been blown up as well.

These were two high-order mutated birds! If they had joined forces, the entire base probably would have suffered a disaster today. Yet Ren Chenxi had easily eliminated two high-order mutated birds just like that, and one of them was an 8th-order mutated bird! How could everyone not deify Ren Chenxi!

Seeming to guess what the girls were thinking, Mu Ning shook her head helplessly and explained on Ren Chenxi’s behalf: “Why are you still standing there like idiots? Hurry up and check on your Xi-jie’s injuries! Your Xi-jie’s attack power is just a little higher, that’s all; her own defense isn’t strong. My ice shield couldn’t hold up against that mutated bird’s chain of attacks, and I even took a hit myself. How could your Xi-jie not get hurt!”

With Mu Ning’s explanation, the girls snapped to their senses. That made sense! Xi-jie had no defensive methods of her own, only slightly higher attack power. The mutated bird’s attacks had been so fierce and vicious just now, and with the Boss’s ice shield broken, it was inevitable that Xi-jie would get hurt. It was just… such terrifying attack power was actually considered just “a little higher” coming from the Boss!

Complaints aside, Sun Jia still held up the bandages and walked toward Ren Chenxi. In the end, she was refused by Ren Chenxi once again.

“No need, deal with your Boss’s wounds first! Her injuries are much more severe than mine. I only injured one arm, so it’s much easier to treat myself.” As Ren Chenxi spoke, she also applied a Recovery Card to herself. Regardless, after accumulating them for a while, and with the 100-draw pull from just now, her supply of Recovery Cards was more than enough.

“Alright, alright! Stop pushing back and forth, you two! Xiao Jia, Xiao Tong, you guys help Mu-jie treat her wounds, and leave Xi-jie’s arm injury to us~”

Seeing Sun Jia looking torn while holding up the bandages and wound medicine, Jian Dan directly stepped out to help smooth things over. Xi-jie and Mu-jie were really something. The bandages and wound medicine were clearly enough to go around, so why were they yielding back and forth? Weren’t they afraid that spending all this time deferring to one another would cause their wounds to lose even more blood!

Hearing Jian Dan’s quiet muttering, Tang Ying, who was standing to the side, winked at her and said, “This is love!”

“…” She didn’t particularly want to understand this kind of love.

The author has something to say:

Jian Dan: …What kind of brain-dead TV dramas have you been watching? If they’re gravely injured, shouldn’t they call an ambulance? Will holding each other cure their injuries!
