    Making Things Difficult

Mu Ning had always believed that the greasy Ren Muhui she had formerly disliked so much had, upon realizing how annoying he was, made up his mind to turn over a new leaf. She thought that was how he had finally become the gentle, considerate person who knew how to take care of others—and the Ren Muhui she had come to like.

But as it turned out, these two versions of Ren Muhui were not the same person at all!

Mu Ning shot a cold glare at Ren Muhui, whose smile was only growing greasier by the second, and then cast a sidelong glance at the innocent-looking Ren Chenxi. She was so furious at these siblings she almost laughed. No wonder. No wonder such an arrogant, greasy man had undergone such an earth-shattering transformation in such a short period of time. So, after the older brother had suffered a setback, the younger sister had stepped in to take his place?

Then… why did Ren Chenxi take over Ren Muhui’s identity to pursue her?

At that thought, Mu Ning suddenly lost the courage to ask. She was afraid that whatever answer she received would be something she couldn’t accept, something she didn’t even dare to accept.

Her face dark, Mu Ning didn’t say anything more. She merely dropped a curt, “Explain it to Liang Ke yourselves,” and left. Hmm, it was easier to deal with than Ren Chenxi had expected. It was just… why didn’t she feel relieved? Why did her chest suddenly feel so tight instead?

Downstairs, Qi Sheng and the highly responsible Liang Ke were indeed waiting outside the doors of the Men’s Building. The moment Liang Ke saw Ren Muhui, she hurried over, anxious to take him for a physical examination. Even after Ren Muhui explained that his esper ability was special and that Fan Juntian’s poison smoke had no effect on him, Liang Ke remained half-skeptical. She still wanted to examine him, and once she confirmed that he hadn’t contracted a drug addiction, she asked if she could draw a few tubes of his blood for research.

Faced with a request from a beautiful woman, what could Ren Muhui do? Naturally, he rolled up his sleeves with a grand flourish and told her to draw as much as she liked!

As a result, by the time Ren Muhui returned to the Men’s Building, his face was deathly pale. Chen Gu and the others were so frightened they thought Qi Sheng and Liang Ke had done something terrible to him. Following him inside, Ren Chenxi snapped in exasperation that he was fine; he was just weak!

How could he not be weak? On the way back with Fan Juntian, not only had he been subjected to all sorts of abuse, but because he hadn’t wanted to expose the food in his inventory, he had eaten erratically. Starving, thirsty, and physically exhausted, he had then unceremoniously been drained of several large tubes of blood. Even with Ren Chenxi’s Recovery Card, Ren Muhui was incredibly weak right now.

“I’m so hungry, so hungry, I’m so hungry! Little sis, do you have any food? Your older bro is starving to death. I want to eat big fish, big shrimp, big crabs…”

Facing his own dear little sister, Ren Muhui naturally didn’t stand on ceremony. Although he still had plenty of instant noodles, biscuits, and bread left in his inventory, he had eaten so much of that dry food on the journey that he was sick of it. Now that he had arrived at Nanhai Base and heard Ren Chenxi mention that Mu Ning was great at fishing and catching seafood, he immediately began craving it.

Seeing Ren Muhui’s pitiful, hungry appearance, what could Ren Chenxi do? Naturally, she had to feed the only family she had left in this game! It just so happened that everyone hadn’t eaten lunch yet, so she decided to make a massive seafood feast for him.

Just as Ren Chenxi turned to head to the Girls’ Building to call Jian Dan, Zhang Tongqi, and the others to help cook lunch, Mu Ning suddenly appeared in the lobby of the Men’s Building like a ghost. She shot a dark, sinister glare at Ren Muhui, who was waiting around like an entitled lord1 for his sister to cook, and abruptly said, “I’d rather have porridge for lunch today.”

“…” Porridge for lunch?! Aren’t you afraid of going hungry?! Chen Gu and the other big, strapping men who could eat a horse all stared at their Boss as if they had seen a ghost, wondering why she was suddenly acting crazy.

As another guy with a big appetite who had been starving for days, Ren Muhui didn’t want porridge either. But Goddess Mu had spoken. As his future golden thigh2, he immediately nodded and clapped his hands in a fawning3 manner, praising the idea. “Porridge is great! In this kind of season, we should drink porridge to properly nourish our bodies~”

“…” Ah, they could only say he truly lived up to his title as the Boss’s boyfriend! Even when she was acting crazy, he supported her unconditionally.

Seeing Ren Muhui agree, Mu Ning sneered and stared straight at him. “I heard from Ren Chenxi that you’re quite skilled at making porridge. She said you taught her everything she knows. So, could you make some Shiitake Mushroom Chicken Congee for us to try this afternoon?”

“…” Ren Muhui did know how to make porridge, but he only knew how to make white porridge! And that was using a rice cooker! As for this Shiitake Mushroom Chicken Congee Mu Ning was talking about, since when did he know how to make that?! What kind of nonsense had that wretched girl Ren Chenxi been spouting while he was out of the game?! The current Goddess Mu felt much easier to get along with than before—in the past, she was so aloof she wouldn’t even pay attention to him, whereas now she would at least talk to him. But the problem was…

When Goddess Mu spoke, she still released an aura of coldness that could freeze a person to death!

Bearing the brunt of Mu Ning’s icy gaze, Ren Muhui didn’t dare say too much, afraid that the more he spoke, the more mistakes he’d make. Under the oppressive weight of the goddess’s stare, he could only nod stiffly and agree.

The moment Ren Muhui nodded, Mu Ning impatiently pointed out the door and urged him, “Alright, the ingredients are next door. Go tell Ren Chenxi that you want to have porridge for lunch, and that you’ll cook it yourself! Remember, you want to have porridge, and you want to cook it yourself!”

“…” Goddess, I just got back from having my blood drawn. I’m still starving and weak. Threatening and rushing a frail flower pretty boy4 like me… don’t you feel guilty?!

Facts proved that the cold and ruthless Goddess Mu did not feel guilty in the slightest about oppressing Ren Muhui, who had just escaped from Fan Juntian’s clutches and was still starving and weak. In fact, she even found him too slow in heading next door and coldly rushed him two more times.

Ren Chenxi was in the middle of prepping the seafood for lunch when Ren Muhui walked over. Seeing him, she assumed he was starving and had come over to find something to tide him over. Just as she was about to pull a piece of naan bread from her inventory for him, Ren Muhui shook his head helplessly at her. Looking incredibly pitiful, he said, “Little sis! You don’t need to prepare a seafood feast for your older bro anymore. Let your older bro cook some porridge for you!”

“You want to have porridge? You want to cook it yourself? Ren Muhui, are you acting crazy?” It should be known that back home, Ren Muhui never volunteered to cook! Even when she forced him to the point where he had no other choice, he would still rather order takeout!

“Who do you think made me like this?!” Ren Muhui didn’t want to cook either! It wasn’t that he couldn’t, he just genuinely hated it! Moreover, his cooking skills were average at best, and he wasn’t great at stir-frying either. The only thing he was relatively good at was lazy cooking. And even that was only because, back in college, he had spent all his living expenses on buying various games. Strapped for cash, he had been forced to teach himself out of desperation.

Ren Muhui was just about to accuse Ren Chenxi—If it weren’t for you, you wretched girl, spouting all that nonsense in front of the goddess about me being great at making porridge, would she be forcing me to do it right now?!—when a piercing chill suddenly shot up his spine. He stiffly turned his head. Sure enough, the aloof Goddess Mu was leaning lazily against the doorframe, her unblinking eyes shooting cold arrows at him, filled with blatant warning and threat.

“…” Ren Muhui suddenly felt that the aloof Goddess Mu was only suitable for him to admire from afar. It was better not to interact with her up close in private. Trembling, he snapped his head back around and said in a shaky voice, “S-Sis! Your brother hasn’t had a full meal in days. If I suddenly stuff myself with a massive seafood feast, my stomach probably won’t be able to handle it. S-So, I should just stick to porridge for lunch…”

Hearing Ren Muhui’s reasoning, Ren Chenxi thought it made sense. She nodded and said, “Alright, your stomach really should have something light. Tell you what—we’ve already prepped all this seafood, so how about I make a separate bowl of seafood porridge just for you?”

“No, no, no, I-I’ll do it myself…” Feeling the chill on his back grow even colder, Ren Muhui hurriedly waved his hands at Ren Chenxi. “A-After all, I’m! Very! Good! At! Making! Porridge! Right?! Especially! Shiitake! Mushroom! Chicken! Congee!”

Hearing Ren Muhui grit his teeth and heavily emphasize “very good at making porridge” and “Shiitake Mushroom Chicken Congee” word by word, Ren Chenxi finally understood. So her older brother hadn’t suddenly gone crazy and volunteered to cook—he was being forced to do it by her goddess!

Ren Chenxi shot a sidelong glance at Mu Ning, but Mu Ning just turned her head away, pretending not to notice. Helpless, Ren Chenxi only wanted to properly reason with Mu Ning that her own brother’s current condition wasn’t suitable for cooking. However, before she could even open her mouth, Mu Ning suddenly seemed to be struck by a bout of kindness and spoke up first. “Tell you what, since you’re quite weak right now, it really isn’t appropriate for you to cook lunch for all of us. So, just cook enough for yourself and me. Let me taste if your culinary skills are still as good as they were pre-apocalypse.”

“…” Were my culinary skills good pre-apocalypse?! Have you even tasted my cooking, Goddess?! Ren Muhui’s eyes widened in horror, and he whipped his head around to glare at Ren Chenxi. You wretched girl! You’re the one who used my account to make porridge for the goddess, aren’t you?!

Receiving Ren Muhui’s accusatory glare, Ren Chenxi sighed inwardly. She still wanted to persuade Mu Ning, but Mu Ning spoke again. “It’s just making some porridge, it shouldn’t be that hard, right? You survived two years in the apocalypse, but you can’t manage two bowls of porridge? Or could it be… you don’t actually know how to make porridge? How strange. Then who was the one making porridge for me pre-apocalypse?”

“…” That single sentence forcefully choked back all the words of persuasion Ren Chenxi had been about to say. With no other choice, Ren Chenxi turned her back to Mu Ning and mouthed to Ren Muhui, “You cook! I’ll teach you!”

“…” But this father doesn’t know how to cook! Why should this father have to take the blame5 for the mess you left behind?! Ren Muhui wanted to curse her out, but with Mu Ning standing right there, he didn’t dare. He had no choice. What else could he do? He could only obediently go make the porridge! However, before starting, Ren Muhui refused to give up and made one small request to Mu Ning. “Goddess, I just had a lot of blood drawn, and my limbs are weak right now. So, is it alright if my sister stays by my side and acts as my assistant?”

With his little sister acting as his assistant, he could use the opportunity to have her do most of the work.

Ren Chenxi knew exactly what Ren Muhui was plotting. However, she felt it was impossible for Mu Ning to agree to such a foolish request. To her surprise, Mu Ning merely shot her a half-smile and nodded. “Sure!”

Ren Chenxi stayed to act as Ren Muhui’s assistant, while lunch for the rest of the group was taken over by Zhang Tongqi, Jian Dan, and the other girls. Over at the Men’s Building, upon hearing that they wouldn’t have to eat porridge for lunch after all, the men happily went to prepare their own meal.

Smelling the increasingly rich aroma of seafood wafting through the air, all Ren Muhui could do was frantically swallow his saliva as he miserably cooked the Shiitake Mushroom Chicken Congee with Ren Chenxi’s help. But even with Ren Chenxi acting as his assistant and secretly guiding him, the small pot of Shiitake Mushroom Chicken Congee Ren Muhui ultimately produced tasted worlds apart from what Ren Chenxi made.

Just from the slightly burnt smell of porridge lingering in the air, the girls secretly watching the spectacle could already confirm that Ren Muhui’s small pot of porridge was a complete failure.
