    Ancient Setting Extra (Finale)

A happy ending, with flowers tossed in celebration.

Luo Ke was a runaway bride, so naturally, the farther she ran, the better. Lin Sifei simply bought another horse, and the two of them ambled north at a leisurely pace.

“What are you going to the North for?”

“I heard there’s a great Arch-fiend in the North that everyone’s afraid of. I’m going to kill him and make a name for myself across the land!” Lin Sifei balled her fists, looking extremely pleased with herself.

Luo Ke lowered her gaze and smiled. “A grand ideal, to be sure. But in that case, won’t bringing me along just make me a burden?”

“It’s fine. There are Orthodox Sects of the Wulin in the North, too. You can settle down and make a home there, and I’ll go eliminate demons and defend the righteous path1!”

“Alright,” Luo Ke said, nodding with a smile. “I’ll open a teahouse. When you return from your demon-slaying, remember to come find me.”

    “It’s a promise.”

Although her ideals were lofty, Luo Ke was also quite worried about her actual skill level. The world was at peace, and so far, they hadn’t encountered any situation that required them to fight.

There wasn’t even a single mountain bandit.

That night, Lin Sifei sat by the campfire on watch, but she unknowingly closed her eyes and drifted off.

Luo Ke quietly opened her eyes. She took a small bamboo tube from her sleeve and waved at the sky.

A carrier pigeon landed before her. Luo Ke tied the bamboo tube to its leg and released the bird into the air again.

Lin Sifei’s head suddenly bobbed, and she woke with a jolt. “Hm?”

Luo Ke’s breath caught in her throat. She quickly shut her eyes and pretended to be asleep.

Lin Sifei rubbed her eyes, looked at the sleeping Luo Ke beside her, and stretched lazily before leaning closer to her face.

She reached out, her fingers brushing over Luo Ke’s eyelashes. “You’re just too beautiful.”

Luo Ke feigned sleep, the tickling sensation on her lashes eating away at her heart, bit by bit. Lin Sifei’s smiling voice was the final straw that snapped the string of her composure.

Propping herself up on one elbow, she suddenly tilted her head up, and their soft lips met.

She closed her eyes in enjoyment, savouring the sweet taste.

Lin Sifei’s eyes flew wide in astonishment. She was completely frozen on the spot. It wasn’t until a sharp pain pricked her lip that she snapped back to her senses and shoved Luo Ke away.

Both of them tumbled to the ground. Lin Sifei covered her mouth, utterly bewildered.

    She looked so pitiful.

Luo Ke licked her lips, feeling a little hungry.

Before she could make a move, Lin Sifei had already shot to her feet, strode over, and grabbed her by the shoulders, shaking her frantically.

Luo Ke quickly pressed her fingers to her forehead, her expression frail. “So… dizzy…”

Lin Sifei nodded emphatically. “Dizzy is right. It seems you were lost in a dream just now. How is it? Are you feeling any better?”

Luo Ke suppressed her frustration. “Yes, much better.”

Hearing this, Lin Sifei nodded with a righteous air and helped her lie back down. “Then you should get back to sleep.”

Luo Ke was helpless. She could only grit her teeth in frustration, lie down, and close her eyes.

Lin Sifei stared at her, making sure she was asleep before turning her back to her and sitting down. Staring at the campfire, she was a complete ditz.

What’s wrong with me?! Why don’t I feel like anything’s wrong at all? I still think she’s beautiful—so beautiful that even doing something like this is delightful.

She kneaded her own chest a couple of times, confirming that she hadn’t forgotten her own gender.

She poked the fire with a stick, one hand propping up her chin, and fell into a state of deep confusion.

She fretted all night without sleeping. The next day, she forced herself to get on the road with feigned energy, and she rode her horse very fast.

Luo Ke followed behind her. Sensing that she was trying to avoid her, she didn’t say anything.

Pushing too hard could easily backfire.

After the horses had been running for half the day, Lin Sifei couldn’t bear to tire them out and found a spot by a stream to let them rest.

“Let’s get something to eat, too.” Lin Sifei smiled as she opened their bundle and took out two steamed buns. The buns were cold and not particularly tasty, but for a hungry person, they were more than enough.

Watching the gentle, fair-skinned beauty in front of her nibbling on a steamed bun, Lin Sifei was overcome with a sense of guilt.

“We should reach a city by evening. I’ll treat you to a feast then. You can have whatever you want.”

Luo Ke smiled and nodded, taking small bites of her bun.

After they finished eating and rested for a while, Luo Ke was certain Lin Sifei had recovered. The fingers at her side twitched slightly.

An angry shout suddenly rang out. Two men in black leaped out from the woods, each pointing a sword at them.

Lin Sifei was startled and quickly pushed Luo Ke. “Go, quickly!”

“What about you—!” Before Luo Ke could finish, their assailants’ swords were upon them.

Lin Sifei hurriedly raised her sword to block, but the moment she moved, the amateurish2 nature of her skills was exposed. The men in black opposite her also seemed a bit helpless, their eyes darting almost imperceptibly toward Luo Ke, who was standing off to the side.

Luo Ke sighed and gave a small wave.

The two men in black immediately put on ferocious expressions, spat out a few threats, and ran off together.

Lin Sifei’s eyes sparkled as she held her sword aloft. “Hmph! If you dare come back, I’ll beat you until you’re looking for your teeth on the ground3!”

Luo Ke silently averted her gaze.

Now that she knew Lin Sifei’s true skill level, Luo Ke’s heart was in her throat, terrified that some real accident might befall her.

Fortunately, they encountered no other mishaps along the way. But as they drew closer to the Northern Lands, Luo Ke began to worry again.

    With Lin Sifei’s three-legged cat skills4, wasn’t going up against the Arch-fiend just delivering a head5?

But Lin Sifei’s enthusiasm was so high that she didn’t want to discourage her.

The only solution, then, was to take care of everyone before Lin Sifei got there.

A message was sent by carrier pigeon, and a summons was issued to the martial world of the Jianghu, calling them to the Northern Lands to eliminate the demon and defend the righteous path.

That was the official reason. In reality, everyone had their eyes on the reward money offered by the Luo family of the Jianghu.

The Arch-fiend of the North hadn’t held his territory by being useless6, and the martial world had long been unable to take him down. News of the renewed conflict spread across the land. The moment Lin Sifei heard that fighting had already broken out up ahead, she immediately spurred her horse onward.

Upon entering the Northern Lands, the number of people of the Jianghu in the cities was noticeably greater.

Lin Sifei gazed at the people carrying sabers and swords, her eyes full of yearning.

Luo Ke commented sourly from the side, “You really like people of the Jianghu?”

“Of course.” Lin Sifei puffed out her chest. “I’m one of them, you know.”

Luo Ke couldn’t be bothered to expose her anymore. She was just trying to figure out how to keep Lin Sifei off the battlefield.

But time wouldn’t wait for her. The day after arriving in the city, Lin Sifei grabbed her sword and prepared to head for the fight.

Luo Ke grabbed her arm. “Are you really going?”

“Naturally.” Lin Sifei gave her a puzzled look. “Haven’t I been saying that all along?”

Luo Ke bit her lower lip. “Are you really going to abandon me and leave?”

Lin Sifei’s heart gave a violent thump. She stared blankly, her hand flying to her chest.

Why does this feel so strange? It’s like… I really can’t bear to leave her.

She closed her eyes. She had to stick to her dream; she couldn’t let all her previous efforts go to waste.

One look at her eyes and Luo Ke knew what she was thinking. She abruptly grabbed the front of her robes and kissed her on the lips.

Lin Sifei froze for a second, then immediately tried to push her away.

Luo Ke easily pinned her hands behind her back, pressing her against the door and kissing her to her heart’s content.

Lin Sifei stared at her, dazed and foolish.

Luo Ke smiled, a smile full of wicked charm.

“Since you like people of the Jianghu so much, why not like me instead?”

The words had barely left her lips when the window behind them was struck hard, shattering into pieces.

Luo Ke flicked her hand, batting away the wooden splinters.

Several figures wearing ghost masks suddenly appeared on the windowsill, launching an attack with a tap of their toes.

Luo Ke leaned close to Lin Sifei’s ear and chuckled softly. “Mind if I borrow your sword?”

As soon as she spoke, the sharp sword was unsheathed.

The blade, which had been like a dull piece of iron in Lin Sifei’s hands, now displayed its cold gleam. With a hum, it had already wounded several people. A kick from Luo Ke sent one of them flying.

Lin Sifei leaned against the door, watching Luo Ke move like a phantom. No one could even touch the hem of her clothes.

Soon, all the attackers were dealt with.

A group of men in black appeared and hauled them away.

Luo Ke twirled the sword, tucked it against her sleeve, and turned back to Lin Sifei.

    “Did you see clearly?”

Lin Sifei nodded, an expression of dawning realization on her face. “You’re that knight-errant from before!”

    “You finally recognize me?”

“But…” Lin Sifei looked confused. “Weren’t you a man?”

Luo Ke was about to explain when Lin Sifei’s two paws7 landed accurately on her chest and gave a couple of squeezes.

    Luo Ke’s breath hitched.

Lin Sifei was even more bewildered. “For real?”

Luo Ke couldn’t take it anymore. She pulled her in and kissed her.

When the kiss ended, Luo Ke looked at the obviously darkened color of her lips and gave a slight smirk. “Want to come home with me?”

Lin Sifei’s face flushed. “But you’re a runaway bride.”

“That’s right. I ran away from my wedding to you. Since you ran off, I had to come find you.”

    “We were betrothed?”

Luo Ke snorted. “You ran away before the marriage proposal even arrived.”

Lin Sifei scratched her head, a little embarrassed.

    “Um… I won’t this time.”

She reached out and pinched the hem of Luo Ke’s skirt, giving it a couple of gentle tugs.

    Footnotes

    1. 'To eliminate demons and defend the righteous path' (chú mó wèi dào) is a classic four-character phrase summarizing the duty of a heroic martial artist in the Jianghu.
    2. Bàndiàozi (半吊子) is a colloquial term for a dabbler, an amateur, or someone who is only half-good at something.
    3. A common, vivid Chinese idiom (mǎndì zhǎo yá) for beating someone up so badly that they're left scrambling on the ground looking for their own teeth.
    4. An idiom (sānjiǎomāo de gōngfu) for clumsy, amateurish, or half-baked skills, like a cat trying to get by on only three legs.
    5. 'Sòng réntóu,' literally 'to deliver a head,' is modern Chinese gaming slang. It means to 'feed' the enemy team by dying needlessly, essentially handing them a point. Its use here is anachronistic and humorous.
    6. A Chinese idiom (chī gānfàn) meaning to be useless or not earn one's keep. It literally means 'to eat plain rice' without contributing anything to deserve the side dishes.
    7. The author uses the word 'zhuǎzi' (爪子), which means 'paws,' to describe Lin Sifei's hands. This is a cute callback to her ability to turn into a cat in the main storyline.
