    Doggy and Kitty

    A one-shot flight of fancy1.

The Doggy Across the Way, Look Over Here / Extra2

On a warm afternoon, a kitty was curled up on the swing in the yard, her tail dangling below the wooden seat, swaying back and forth.

A pair of entangled butterflies fluttered up and down, circling in front of her. The breeze from their wings tickled her nose.

Lin Sifei couldn’t help but sneeze, her eyes blinking open in a daze.

    “Meow?” What time is it?

She opened her mouth wide in a yawn. Seeing the sun was still high in the sky, she figured not much time had passed.

Slowly swishing her tail, she hopped from the balcony into the house and glanced at the clock. Luo Ke probably wouldn’t be back for another two hours. Today was the press conference for Luo Corporation’s new electronic product, and the company had insisted she make an appearance.

She jumped onto the sofa, stretched languidly, and changed back into her human form.

Suddenly losing her fur, she felt a little chilly. She hooked the fallen blanket with her foot and wrapped it around herself.

Li Tao had sent her a message asking if she wanted to be the spokesperson for Luo Corporation’s newly released mobile phone.

Lin Sifei wasn’t very interested, though. Given her relationship with Luo Ke, did she really need an endorsement deal? They might as well use that endorsement fee to hire someone else.

She took a sip of water, hesitated for a moment, then opened her tablet and started searching for the livestream of Luo Ke’s mobile phone press conference.

She remembered they had sent a link when they invited Luo Ke. She followed it and, as soon as it opened, saw Luo Ke standing on stage, calmly explaining the new camera technology in a steady, unhurried voice.

To be honest, this held zero appeal for Lin Sifei. She didn’t understand any of it, but that didn’t matter. Just having Luo Ke standing there was interesting enough.

The livestream had a scrolling comments3 feature, and many people were discussing Luo Ke.

Although Luo Ke had never deliberately hidden herself, few people paid attention to these sorts of things. Even when she appeared in magazines, they were financial publications that the general public rarely read.

Luo Ke was beautiful, and when she talked about work, she exuded the aura of an ice mountain—captivating, yet intimidating.

Soon, the Luo Corporation press conference was on the hot search4. With it came a flood of discussion about Luo Ke: a female entrepreneur, beautiful and capable.

Luo Ke had already garnered attention for her marriage to Lin Sifei. Now, her resume was being passed around for everyone to admire, which in turn brought Lin Sifei onto the trending list as well.

Two beauties standing together was always a pleasing sight, and the internet was filled with a chorus of rainbow farts5.

Seeing how much traction it was getting, the employees at Luo Corporation submitted a request and launched a giveaway lottery, adding an extra ten phones for the ten people who blew the best rainbow farts.

And so the internet became a sea of praise experts, all of them digging deep to summon their best elementary school composition skills.

Lin Sifei howled with laughter as she scrolled through the comments and watched Luo Ke’s livestream.

When the livestream ended, Lin Sifei knew Luo Ke would be home soon. She happily started preparing dessert, planning for them to enjoy a pleasant, leisurely afternoon together.

The doorbell rang. Lin Sifei hurried over, muttering, “Why didn’t she just open the door herself?”

But to her surprise, the person on the video intercom wasn’t Luo Ke, but Zhao Min.

Lin Sifei frowned and pulled the door open. “Zhao Min, what are you doing here?”

The moment the door was ajar, a golden retriever squeezed through the opening.

Lin Sifei’s eyes widened in confusion as she stared at the not-yet-fully-grown dog. “Where did this dog come from?”

Beads of sweat appeared on Zhao Min’s forehead. “Um, well, this golden retriever… she’s actually President Luo… transformed.”

“?!” Lin Sifei felt as if she’d been struck by lightning, frozen to the spot in a stupor.

Zhao Min thought she was terrified and quickly said, “Something must have gone wrong somewhere. President Luo is absolutely not joking, and she really is human. There might be some supernatural forces at play. We’ll look into it.”

Lin Sifei nodded and offered a few words of reassurance before closing the door.

She turned around and looked at the dog sitting on the sofa, its expression completely serious.

She really is different from a normal dog, she thought. She’s not panting with her tongue out.

Lin Sifei crouched in front of her, propping her chin on her hands, and couldn’t help but let out a snort of laughter. She tapped Luo Ke’s nose. “Hey, dogs pant to cool down. Aren’t you hot?”

Luo Ke stared at her with a pair of watery black eyes, her gaze wronged and implicitly reproachful. How could you laugh at me?

Lin Sifei reached out and ruffled the fur on her head. “Oh, come on, still worried about your image? Is there any side of you I haven’t seen?”

Luo Ke hesitated for a moment before finally, slowly, sticking out the very tip of her tongue and panting softly.

“I’ll turn down the temperature. You can pull it back in after you’ve cooled down a bit.” Lin Sifei picked up the remote. “I saw you panting just now.”

After resting for a while, Luo Ke calmed down and no longer needed to pant. She tilted her head up slightly to look at Lin Sifei.

    Lin Sifei ignored her.

She lifted a paw and nudged her pant leg.

Lin Sifei smiled and looked down at her. “What is it? Want a kiss?”

Luo Ke huffed twice. This house worked for a cat; there was no reason it shouldn’t work for a dog.

Lin Sifei reached out and hugged the dog, ruffling her fur. As much as she adored this cute dog, she still wanted her Luo Ke back more.

“I’m going to kiss you now.”

Lin Sifei looked at the dog’s head and saw Luo Ke close her eyes, lifting her chin with a great sense of ceremony.

Lin Sifei’s eyes curved into crescents as she suppressed her laughter. Can’t laugh. Luo Ke will actually get sad if I do.

She lowered her gaze slightly, leaned down, and kissed the tip of her snout. Nothing happened.

Lin Sifei scratched her head. “Looks like it’s not quite the same.”

Luo Ke flopped onto the floor, deflated.

Lin Sifei rubbed her ears. “Maybe this also takes twenty-four hours. Let’s just wait and see.”

She lifted the dog onto the sofa. With a POOF, she turned into a cat and burrowed her tiny body against the dog’s belly.

Lin Sifei stretched out a paw and patted Luo Ke’s paw. “Meow~” Scoot over a little.

Luo Ke’s ears shot up. She had understood.

“Woof!” Can you understand what I’m saying?

Lin Sifei’s eyes widened in astonishment. She nodded her little cat head. “Meow!” I can!

They looked at each other and couldn’t help but laugh. In this state, it seemed there wasn’t much difference after all.

Lin Sifei expertly hooked the nearby blanket with her claws and pulled it over both of them.

They squeezed and curled up together. She rested her head on Luo Ke’s belly, feeling it rise and fall with each breath, and could faintly hear a heartbeat.

Luo Ke curled up too, resting her head on her front paws. Whenever she opened her eyes, she could see Lin Sifei lying on her stomach.

A cat and a dog, snuggled together and basking in the sunlight from the balcony, drifted off to sleep before they knew it.

In a daze, Lin Sifei felt a little cold and instinctively snuggled deeper.

A warm arm wrapped around her waist, and she was immediately pressed against a warm body. She hummed twice, content, and continued to sleep.

Luo Ke lay on the sofa, pulling the blanket up for her and gazing at the moonlight outside.

Suddenly turning into a dog, then suddenly turning back… it seemed it was all so she could experience what Feifei felt.

But because she had a home, she wasn’t worried at all. It seemed she hadn’t experienced any of the bitterness, and in fact, she kind of wanted to try it again.
