    Giving a gift.

“Feifei, how are you? I heard they caught a sasaeng fan where you are, is that right?” Her manager’s anxious voice rang out from the phone. “Feifei, I’m on my way over right now. Don’t be scared, okay? Don’t be scared!”

Lin Sifei blinked, a bayberry still between her teeth. “What are you talking about? Scared of what?”

Hearing her calm voice, her manager let out a small sigh of relief. “You don’t know? So it wasn’t your sasaeng fan? Are there other celebrities staying there?”

“I have no idea. In any case, I’m just staying in my room and not going out.”

Lin Sifei huffed. “But you should still hurry over. We have to rush to our next booking today, right?”

“I know, I’m coming to get you.”

Lin Sifei smoothed her hair and sat up. The image of yesterday’s fan surfaced in her mind, and her lips formed a slight pout.

“It couldn’t have been her, could it? She’s so pretty, why would she do something like that?”

Lin Sifei pressed her lips together, checked that her lipstick was perfectly blended, then let out a yawn and picked up her bag.

Her manager arrived quickly and rushed in, looking her over from top to bottom and front to back before finally relaxing. “As long as you’re okay. Let’s go.”

Lin Sifei put on her sunglasses and walked out.

Everything went smoothly. The rest of her schedule was basically just rushing from one booking to another.

“Last one for today. We’re going to shoot a jewelry endorsement.”

“Jewelry?” Lin Sifei recalled that the one she’d accepted was for a major brand.

“It’s Luo Corporation, right?” Lin Sifei pressed her fingers to her brow. “I’ve seen their designs. They seem pretty good.”

“This is the jewelry they’re providing for this shoot. You can take a look.”

Lin Sifei scrolled through the tablet, looking at the plans sent over by the designer, and got the gist of it.

“It’s very elegant. A bit of a vintage style.”

The photoshoot proceeded with remarkable efficiency, and they were soon halfway through.

    “Let’s take a short break.”

Lin Sifei nodded with a smile, sat down in a chair, and opened a bottle of mineral water to take a drink.

    “President Luo.”

Hearing the staff’s voices around her, Lin Sifei turned her head, her eyes instantly widening.

What’s going on? Isn’t that my sasaeng fan? What is she doing here?

Lin Sifei’s first reaction was that the fan had followed her here again. The shock made her choke on her water.

    “Cough, cough.”

Xiao Pan nervously handed her a tissue. “Are you all right?”

Lin Sifei shook her head, her gaze fixed on the woman who had walked up beside her.

    “You are…”

“Luo Ke. You didn’t remember my name?” Luo Ke extended a hand.

Lin Sifei stood up with a smile and shook her hand. “So you’re President Luo.”

She dodged the question of whether she remembered, instead turning to the photographer with a smile. “Shall we continue?”

“Are you rested? Then let’s begin.”

The photographer was also quite excited. After all, President Luo had come to inspect the set. If he could take the opportunity to show off his skills, that would naturally be best.

Lin Sifei went to change her outfit. She emerged in a gold slip dress, her hair styled in large, glamorous waves that cascaded around her neck. She hooked a strand of hair with her fingertip, showcasing the gemstone ring on her finger.

The photographer enthusiastically directed her poses, glancing over at Luo Ke from time to time, hoping for a word of praise. But to his disappointment, every time he looked at President Luo, he found her staring intently at the person in front of the camera.

As expected, the photographer thought. The person behind the camera is always invisible.

Luo Ke watched Lin Sifei in front of the lens, looking like a noble princess. Every frown and every smile held a myriad of charms.

    So beautiful.

Luo Ke tilted her head slightly. A person this beautiful—no wonder she entered the entertainment industry.

“The shoot is over, President Luo.”

Luo Ke snapped back to her senses and saw that Lin Sifei was indeed heading to the dressing room to change.

Ignoring her secretary, she walked straight after Lin Sifei.

Lin Sifei, holding her own clothes, turned her head in exasperation. “President Luo, what are you doing? Are you trying to harass me now?”

“Is that still what you think of me?”

    “It’s not what I think, it’s what you’ve done…”

“The sasaeng fan who was following you yesterday—I’ve already called the police. She’s been taken away.”

Lin Sifei’s eyes widened in astonishment. “You called the police?”

“Mhm. It’s the best way to handle it.” Luo Ke leaned against the dressing room doorframe with her arms crossed. “If anything like this happens again, you can tell me, if it’s inconvenient for you to report it.”

“It’s not that it’s inconvenient, it’s just that they can’t hold her for more than a few days, and then she’ll be back at it again.”

Lin Sifei’s head drooped in frustration. Suddenly, she lifted it again. “Just like you. I already told you I’m not interested, so why are you still following me?”

“I’m not following you.” Luo Ke stood up straight. “I just work here.”

“Then why are you standing here now?”

Luo Ke looked at her. “It seems you didn’t realize that sasaeng fan was caught, nor did you realize it was my doing.”

She hesitated, saying no more. Lin Sifei looked at her, meeting her eyes.

Her expression was as blank as ever, but somehow, Lin Sifei could practically see the words “Praise Me” written all over it.

Lin Sifei smiled and pressed her fingers to her brow. “Alright, I get it. You did a good job. Thank you.”

“Can I treat you to a meal?” Luo Ke raised an eyebrow at her.

Lin Sifei shrugged and took a step back. “No, you can’t.”

She slammed the door shut and decisively locked it.

Luo Ke, who had nearly gotten her nose hit, rubbed her neck helplessly.

The phone in her pocket suddenly rang. She took it out, and the corners of her lips lifted slightly. “Hello, Mama.”

Luo Ke’s mother laughed on the other end. “How was the company inspection? Are you coming home for dinner tonight?”

“Mhm, I’ll be back,” Luo Ke said, taking a deep breath.

Her mother keenly sensed her mood. “What’s wrong? Are you in a bad mood?”

Luo Ke was silent for a moment, glancing at the closed door in front of her. “Mama, I think I’ve fallen for someone.”

    “Really? Who is it?!”

    “Lin Sifei.”

Her mother sighed in disappointment. “Oh, that celebrity. Haven’t you liked her for a long time?”

“It’s different. I met her, and I think my heart was genuinely moved.” Luo Ke leaned against the wall. “But… she doesn’t seem to like me.”

“Of course not. How would she even know who you are?” Luo Ke’s mother was exasperated by her own daughter’s denseness. “You have to pursue her. You have to pursue her properly.”

    “How do I pursue her?”

“Invite her to dinner, give her gifts, things like that.”

Luo Ke sounded even more helpless. “I was just rejected for dinner.”

“Then start with gifts. All kinds of gifts. Some need to be expensive, and some should be for everyday use,” her mother instructed, guiding her step-by-step.

“I have something expensive,” Luo Ke said, her eyes drifting to a staff member not far away who was holding a ring box. That was the ring from the photoshoot.

“Then start with the expensive one.”

Luo Ke nodded and hung up.

She strode over to the staff member and took the ring box.

Just as she turned to walk back, the dressing room door opened. Lin Sifei walked out, looked up, and nearly collided with Luo Ke.

“What—what are you doing?!” Lin Sifei jumped back a step in fright.

Luo Ke took her hand and pressed the ring box into it. “A gift for you.”

Lin Sifei frowned, looking at the box in her hand. She opened it and saw the ring from the photoshoot inside.

    “This is…”

“It looked very beautiful when you wore it just now. It’s for you.” Luo Ke took out the ring, wanting to help her put it on.

Lin Sifei forcefully pulled her hand back. “N-No, that’s not necessary!”

“You don’t like it? I can get you a different one.”

“No, really, you don’t have to!” Lin Sifei struggled to retract her hand.

Not far away, the staff members were huddled together like a flock of chicks, watching their boss harass a major celebrity.

How tragic. The entertainment industry is such a big dye vat,1 and the boss is just inhuman.2

“Still, our rings are so sparkly. And super expensive.”

    “Yeah, I want one too.”

    “Me too.”

    The envy was palpable. Stare—
