    The Villainous Scientist (6)

Starting From Scratch: Little Marshal x Mad, Dark, Sickly Scientist

After boarding the new spaceship, they still had about three or four days’ journey to Blue Star. The new vessel was massive, giving everyone a private cabin, and Song Xuyi’s room finally looked like a proper VIP suite, with much better amenities than before.

Not long after she boarded the new ship, her smart-brain received an obituary broadcast from Imperial Star to the entire Empire: Former Marshal Song Xuyi had met with an interstellar accident and tragically passed away.

The citizens of the Empire had long since grown accustomed to such news; under the current Emperor, those who reached high office rarely met a peaceful end.

No one knew that Song Xuyi, who had just been declared dead, was actually overjoyed—she didn’t have to share a room with Jiang Qianyu anymore!

Jiang Qianyu had been assigned to the room right next door to Song Xuyi.

Song Xuyi happily followed the crew member to her room, failing to notice the knowing, suggestive look the guide cast toward a certain spot on the wall…

Once the crew member left, Song Xuyi completely let her guard down. She happily hummed a tune, drew the curtains, took a long soak in the large bathtub, and then climbed into bed with a joyful heart, drifting off to sleep—

She finally didn’t have to fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves every night, nor did she have to worry about waking up to find herself tied up by Jiang Qianyu…

Song Xuyi had no idea that in the dead of night, a door in the wall silently slid open. A petite figure stepped through, strolling into her quarters as if taking a leisurely walk in a garden…

Everyone had witnessed how Song Xuyi had risked her life to carry Jiang Qianyu to the spaceship, which left them with the firm impression that Song Xuyi was head over heels in love with her. Consequently, the crew had deliberately assigned them to a couples suite, and a gossipy crew member had even whispered some advice to Jiang Qianyu on how to repay her: the wall between their rooms was just for show and completely lacked soundproofing, and there was a hidden door on it. If Jiang Qianyu slipped through at night, she’d surely be able to please Song Xuyi…

Jiang Qianyu hadn’t paid any attention to the crew member’s words at first.

After entering her room, she’d lain down in her hibernation pod as usual. Yet, for some reason, her mind was inexplicably restless. She couldn’t even settle down to analyze her formulation data; her thoughts kept drifting back to the sight of Song Xuyi carrying her on her back.

To Jiang Qianyu, all humans—whether they were Alphas, Betas, or Omegas, young or old, male or female—had never been any different. Her heart had only ever held her research and her goal: to drag the high-and-mighty Alphas down into the mire, forcing them to suffer the same humiliations that Omegas had once endured…

Yet now, Jiang Qianyu discovered that she could actually remember Song Xuyi’s face.

That face had incredibly fair skin that felt as smooth as a freshly peeled egg. Her eyes were a pair of beautiful almond eyes, her nose was small and delicate, and her cheeks were rounded—retaining a touch of innocent charm even when she frowned in anger.

Jiang Qianyu couldn’t help but recall the rumors she’d heard: because she was so young and beautiful, Song Xuyi had adopted an extremely ruthless fighting style to establish her authority in the military. She was supposedly harsh with her subordinates, ruling the army entirely through brutal means.

But Song Xuyi’s behavior during this time was completely different from the rumors. She was gentle yet incredibly resilient. Even when pushed to her absolute limit by Jiang Qianyu’s torment, she never became dejected, always greeting others with a smile…

Jiang Qianyu had almost forgotten what Song Xuyi was like when they’d first met.

When had she started remembering her?

Perhaps it was the night Song Xuyi had tried to mark her, only to be drugged and turned into an Omega instead. Maybe it was due to the interference of pheromones, but that was the first time Jiang Qianyu had ever touched this woman whom she’d always detested…

And ever since then, her gaze had drifted toward Song Xuyi more and more…

    “La la la…”

An out-of-tune singing voice suddenly drifted from next door, shattering Jiang Qianyu’s train of thought. Just as the crew member had said, the soundproofing between the two rooms was virtually nonexistent; she could clearly hear everything happening next door.

Jiang Qianyu frowned. Listening to the splashing water and singing from next door, she wanted nothing more than to interrupt this performance where not a single note managed to land on key. However, hearing the obvious joy in Song Xuyi’s voice, Jiang Qianyu’s brow twitched, and she ultimately held herself back.

Closing her eyes inside the hibernation pod, she counted the number of times Song Xuyi’s singing went out of tune. Slowly, her irritation dissipated, and her mind settled into an unprecedented state of peace…

Jiang Qianyu didn’t even know when she’d fallen asleep.

For the first time, her sleep wasn’t accompanied by the sound of crashing waves.

Yet before long, Jiang Qianyu was jolted awake from her dream once more, her eyes flying open in the darkness—

She hadn’t expected to have that familiar yet foreign dream again.

Ever since she’d presented as an Omega, she’d been having a recurring dream off and on. In the dream, she seemed to be surrounded by flowers and loved by many, yet she was always mourning a deceased woman. She couldn’t see the woman’s face clearly, but she knew that to honor her memory, her dream self spent the rest of her life living in her image—engaging in charity work, helping those in distress, and volunteering to teach in remote mountain regions… Her dream self was all smiles and laughter by day, appearing perfectly normal, but the longing that consumed her at night almost drove her mad…

Many times, when Jiang Qianyu woke up startled from the dream, a lingering ache of longing would still remain in her chest.

Until not long ago, when she’d dreamed of herself falling off a cliff while volunteering in the mountains…

Jiang Qianyu had sneered at that version of herself in the dream. Her life had only ever been about power; only the weak would make such a fuss over another person… Upon discovering that her dream self had fallen off a cliff, she’d assumed that this dream, which had tortured her for so long, had finally reached its end. And indeed, just as she’d expected, she hadn’t had any dreams related to it during this period…

Yet just now, she’d had that dream again.

In the dream, she’d miraculously perceived her dream self’s final memory before death: she was pushed on the street, falling into someone’s embrace, and as she looked up, she met a pair of beautiful eyes…

Jiang Qianyu recognized them instantly: those were Song Xuyi’s eyes!

She didn’t even know why she’d remember Song Xuyi’s eyes.

But after waking up, she couldn’t fall back asleep. Her heart was filled with anxiety, plagued by a sense of losing control. By the time she snapped out of it, she’d already walked into Song Xuyi’s room.

In the darkness, Jiang Qianyu stood staring at Song Xuyi for a long time.

The sleeping Song Xuyi looked incredibly gentle and peaceful. She seemed to be this way at all times, soft and yielding like a lump of dough without any sharp edges. Yet beneath that gentle facade, there was an indescribable, warm strength within her…

Jiang Qianyu opened her hand slightly. In that instant, for some inexplicable reason, she didn’t dare reach out to touch Song Xuyi’s cheek…

Just a few days ago, when she was researching Song Xuyi’s gland, she’d dared to unscrupulously leave Song Xuyi in tears. Yet now, even a simple touch required careful consideration…

Why did she feel this way?

Jiang Qianyu vaguely sensed that something was quietly changing—something beyond her comprehension. But as a researcher, what she excelled at most was seeking truth and analysis. Pursing her lips, she attempted to analyze the reason behind her shifting emotions:

In the beginning, she really hadn’t intended to stay by Song Xuyi’s side.

She’d drugged Song Xuyi partly to test the drug’s efficacy and partly because she was utterly disgusted by Song Xuyi’s covetousness, wanting to stop her from pestering her—while also eliminating a powerful rival in her plan to overthrow the Alphas. Yet despite falling from her peak to rock bottom, when faced with her testing, Song Xuyi’s eyes showed no sign of dejection. They were vibrant, like the morning sun…

This had even caused Jiang Qianyu some confusion, making her wonder if the drug had lost its effect on Song Xuyi.

That was why she’d followed Song Xuyi onto the spaceship; she’d desperately wanted to verify whether Song Xuyi had actually turned into an Omega. Her original plan had been to leave after figuring out what was going on with Song Xuyi’s body—

Yet facts proved that Song Xuyi really had become an Omega—

Except, she’d become an Omega who could interfere with Jiang Qianyu’s emotions.

    Was it because of pheromones?

Jiang Qianyu knitted her brows in the darkness: because she liked the sweet orange pheromones1 on Song Xuyi, she was driven by instinct, allowing Song Xuyi to affect her…

But she had a feeling it wasn’t that simple.

Yet, as for what the actual reason was, she couldn’t say…

But one thing was certain: she could no longer treat Song Xuyi as a test subject.

Pursing her lips, she felt a trace of inexplicable regret at the thought of never seeing Song Xuyi looking at her with tearful eyes again.

Though Jiang Qianyu didn’t consider herself a good person, she always repaid her debts. Because Zhou Sui’s parents had been kind to her, she’d taken Zhou Sui’s place in entering the Marshal’s Residence. Now, Song Xuyi had saved her life too…

For now, Jiang Qianyu couldn’t think of anything she could do for Song Xuyi. Song Xuyi didn’t seem to lack anything…

But just because that was the case now didn’t mean it would always be so.

“Then I’ll temporarily stay by Song Xuyi’s side for now!”

Having reached a decision, Jiang Qianyu curled her lips into a silent smile in the darkness. The inexplicable anxiety in her chest suddenly vanished, and her mood instantly brightened: “There’ll come a day when I can repay this life-saving favor…”

Song Xuyi remained completely unaware of the nighttime visit.

The System, of course, knew that Jiang Qianyu had come. However, because Jiang Qianyu used to constantly study Song Xuyi’s gland, Song Xuyi had been afraid the System would witness those embarrassing scenes and had configured a feature that automatically sent the System into lockup the moment Jiang Qianyu appeared. Consequently, when the System emerged from lockup, it didn’t know what had happened. Based on past experience, it assumed Jiang Qianyu had simply been studying Song Xuyi’s gland again. To save Song Xuyi’s face, the System thoughtfully refrained from bringing it up…

Having enjoyed a great night’s sleep, Song Xuyi didn’t see Jiang Qianyu when she woke up the next day, which put her in an even better mood. She happily sang to herself as she changed her clothes and headed out for breakfast. However, the moment she opened her door, she ran right into Jiang Qianyu. If not for the other woman’s indifferent gaze and completely calm expression, Song Xuyi would’ve almost suspected she was waiting there on purpose…

    “Morning,” Song Xuyi greeted dryly.

But Jiang Qianyu didn’t do anything else. She merely cast a faint glance at Song Xuyi before taking the lead and walking ahead.

Song Xuyi let out a sigh of relief. Jiang Qianyu was always highly goal-oriented. When they’d lived together before, unless she wanted to conduct research, Jiang Qianyu had treated her like air. This had to be a coincidence…

Yet over the next few days, Song Xuyi ran into Jiang Qianyu every single time she went to eat.

Once or twice might’ve been a coincidence, but this many times was simply too convenient!

Song Xuyi began to doubt her own judgment, right up until the day the spaceship arrived at Blue Star—

Next door, while packing her luggage, Jiang Qianyu seemed to have accidentally dropped a cup.

Hearing the crisp clatter from next door, Song Xuyi realized only belatedly that the soundproofing between the two rooms was actually this terrible…

Recalling her out-of-tune singing over the last two days, she was so embarrassed she just wanted to find a crack in the floor to crawl into…

At that moment, the spaceship landed on Blue Star.

Blue Star was just as picturesque as Song Xuyi had imagined, with lush green mountains and clear waters. The first thing that caught her eye was a massive mech sculpture towering into the clouds, its silvery-white armor glittering under the sunlight…

“Welcome to the Capital of Mechs!”
