Trending Again – Chapter 2
by Little PandaA City’s Wealthy Woman, Overlord Clauses
Si Meng scrambled into Lu Qi’s car as if she had just survived a catastrophe. Lu Qi gave her a strange look and asked, “What is it? Were you chased by a dog?”
Si Meng clicked her tongue. “Don’t even get me started. I ran into Lin Hanyue.”
Lu Qi immediately jumped up. “That scumbag actually dares to come looking for you…”
Si Meng’s expression was hard to read. She looked completely deflated, mumbling listlessly, “Don’t bring up the past. How’s the accommodation you arranged for me?”
Lu Qi didn’t want to poke at her sore spot any further. “It’s great. A one-bedroom apartment. Trust me, I’ll definitely get you back into the entertainment industry. I already promised my sister.”
Si Meng was clearly distracted. Whether she returned to the entertainment industry didn’t matter, but Lu Qi’s sister…
Si Meng asked casually, “How’s your sister doing these days?”
Lu Qi sighed. “How else could she be? Playing the dutiful wife and mother. Hmph, her husband’s a total straight man. He actually says women shouldn’t show their faces in public.”
Hearing this, Si Meng felt a wave of mixed emotions. “I’m the one who let her down.”
Si Meng’s sudden rise to explosive fame back then had actually been an accident. At the time, Lu Qi’s older sister—Sister Lu—was her gold-medal agent who had essentially built Si Meng’s career from the ground up. Even the mess from that incident back then was cleaned up by Sister Lu.
Lu Qi couldn’t stand her dejected, half-dead attitude. “Since you’re back, you should let those people from back then see what a salted fish flipping over1 looks like!”
Back at her place, Si Meng opened her laptop to handle some overseas projects. She didn’t want the Si family to know she was back in the country just yet. She would handle her personal affairs herself; she had no intention of letting those people from back then off the hook.
After taking a shower, Si Meng went over her accounts. She actually owed thirty million in contract breach penalties from back then. Although thirty million wasn’t a massive sum, she couldn’t touch any of her foreign funds right now.
Just then, Lu Qi sent her a WeChat message. When Si Meng tapped it open, she saw a job offer.
Si Meng: “What’s this?”
Lu Qi: “Before you make your comeback in showbiz, you have to pay off your debt. That’s why I submitted your resume online. Unbelievably, some rich woman with more money than brains actually reached out!”
Si Meng had a bad premonition. Lu Qi had always been unreliable.
Si Meng: “I’ll pass.”
Lu Qi: “It’s just acting as a personal assistant, seriously! And the pay is incredible!”
Si Meng: “How much?”
Lu Qi held up a single finger during their video call and grinned. “One million a month.”
Si Meng had to admit she was tempted. Before she could reply, Lu Qi hung up after throwing out a quick, “See you tomorrow!”
The next day, Si Meng threw on a plain white T-shirt and jeans, put on a face mask and a baseball cap, and hurried out the door.
When she arrived at the agreed-upon café, the place was empty. Si Meng took off her mask and ordered an Americano to pass the time. The waitress nearby kept stealing glances at her profile, looking as if she wanted to say something but hesitated, making Si Meng wonder if there was something on her face.
The waitress walked over with the coffee and asked, a bit shyly, “Excuse me, are you a newly debuted artist? You’re so beautiful.”
Only then did Si Meng realize the devastating appeal of her own face. No wonder Sister Lu had pointed at her face back then and said, “With looks like these, it’s impossible for you not to make it big.”
Si Meng returned a polite smile. “I’m just an ordinary person.”
The waitress felt a wave of regret. It was her first time meeting someone so gorgeous, yet she couldn’t even become her fan.
At that moment, a man dressed as a lawyer walked in, followed by an elderly gentleman.
The lawyer’s attitude was cold, but the elderly gentleman was a bit overly enthusiastic.
The old gentleman said, “You only need to take care of our young mistress’s daily routine. Most importantly, you must keep her happy.”
The lawyer produced a contract and added, “The term is three years. You can take a look.”
Si Meng read through the contract carefully. It was beyond sketchy. It included clauses stating that Party B must maintain Party A’s cheerful mood, and that Party B must not have designs on Party A based on her looks during the contract period.
Seeing that Si Meng was still hesitating, the old gentleman recalled his young mistress’s instructions and said, “Our young mistress said that if she didn’t find you so easy on the eyes, you wouldn’t be worth this price. There won’t be another chance if you pass this up.”
Si Meng gritted her teeth and signed her name. She was too desperate for money right now. Without funds, she could never turn the tables.
Once the contract was tucked away, the old gentleman had the bodyguards lead Si Meng to the car, determined not to let her escape.
Seeing their impatience, Si Meng asked, “Um, aren’t you going to wait for me to pack my luggage?”
The old butler replied, “There’s no need. You start taking care of our young mistress today. Just showing up is enough.”
Si Meng still felt a bit uneasy, so she called Lu Qi. But that girl guaranteed that the employer was a wealthy woman of A City who would never sell her off, and told her to just relax and enjoy the ride.
Si Meng sat in the Rolls-Royce, watching the urban scenery outside the window gradually give way to a secluded suburb. Finally, the car pulled up in front of a grand villa. Rows of maids immediately stepped forward to greet them. But Si Meng’s attention was completely fixed on the suitcase standing near the entrance. Wasn’t that her own suitcase? The very one that crazy woman, Lin Hanyue, had snatched away?
Si Meng felt a chill run down her spine. Steeling herself, she looked up toward the villa’s terrace. Sure enough, she saw Lin Hanyue standing there with her arms crossed over her chest, watching her with a half-smile.
Si Meng: Is it too late to run now?
