After Being Scummed – Chapter 21

It’s a painting of you

After attending the wedding reception that evening, Yin Bai went straight home. Along with her, she carried the bouquet that had been snatched by Zuo Jingyou.

Yin Bai was quite satisfied with this spoils of war. Upon arriving home, she unpacked it and placed it in a vase. She spent some rare time arranging the bouquet to make it look very attractive.

After finishing the flower arrangement, Yin Bai even arrogantly took out her phone and snapped a photo of the bouquet. She thought that if Zuo Jingyou added her as a friend later on, she would send her this floral masterpiece to show off.

After completing all of this, Yin Bai happily went to take a shower.

Before going to sleep, Yin Bai picked up a book from her bedside and flipped through it for a while. Just then, she received a WeChat friend request from Zuo Jingyou.

Upon seeing that it was Zuo Jingyou, Yin Bai immediately accepted the friend request and swiftly sent her own floral arrangement as a message.

Zuo Jingyou on the other end quickly figured out the meaning of the photo: “Today’s bouquet? Impressive work.”

Yin Bai was instantly delighted and asked, “Is it beautiful?”

Zuo Jingyou replied promptly, “Very beautiful, several times more beautiful than its original form.”

Praised by Zuo Jingyou, Yin Bai grinned with satisfaction. She checked the time and saw it was around eleven o’clock, so she bid Zuo Jingyou goodnight, saying, “Alright then. I’m going to sleep now. Goodnight.”

Zuo Jingyou replied promptly, “Goodnight, Little Prince.”

Seeing the term “Little Prince” once again, Yin Bai glanced at Zuo Jingyou’s nickname and silently changed it to “Pilot.”

After making the adjustment, Yin Bai said to Zuo Jingyou, “Goodnight, Pilot.”

Pilot?

On the other end of the screen, Zuo Jingyou, sitting at her desk in a robe and wearing glasses, observed the chat conversation on the screen. She tapped her carbon pen against her hand and lowered her gaze to the sketch paper in front of her, featuring a drawing of half a lamb. A hint of a smile crossed her eyes.

The person who drew the lamb for the Little Prince, isn’t that the Pilot?

She chuckled and put her phone away, continuing to work on her drawing.

Over the next few days, Zuo Jingyou was busy shooting for the drama, so she only found time in the evenings to intermittently complete the lamb drawing for Yin Bai.

Because it was a sketch, Zuo Jingyou was worried that the charcoal might smudge, so she had it laminated for protection and sent it to Yin Bai via express mail to Haicheng.

Yin Bai received this gift around noon the next day.

It happened to be a weekend when Yin Bai was watching “Rainbow Ponies” with the kids. Zhang Yu received a delivery call and personally fetched the package.

Yin Bai originally thought it was some kind of document, so she opened it in front of the children. When she opened it, she discovered a drawing of a little lamb on 8K sketch paper, and she raised an eyebrow in surprise:

Oh, it seems Zuo Jingyou’s sketching skills are quite impressive!

With this thought in mind, Tong Tong and Wen Wen, who were beside her, leaned in and looked at the sketch, exclaiming, “Wow, it’s a little lamb! It’s beautifully drawn!”

Yin Bai nodded in agreement, “Indeed, it’s really good!”

Tong Tong anxiously asked, “Fairy Sister, is this a gift from someone else? Is today a special day? Why would someone give you a gift?”

Tong Tong’s tone was urgent, afraid of missing a special occasion for Fairy Sister.

Yin Bai carefully stored the little lamb sketch and handed it to Zhang Yu, saying, “Help me find a frame for it. Hang it on…”

Yin Bai paused for a moment and then pointed to the empty wall on the left side of the third-floor art studio, saying, “Hang it on the left side of the art studio on the third floor.”

Zhang Yu accepted the sketch with both hands and replied with a smile, “Sure.”

After arranging where the painting would go, Yin Bai turned to her little companions and said, “No, today isn’t a special day. It’s because I’m cute that someone gave me a gift!”

Yin Bai was quite pleased with herself, and Wen Wen, reaching over Tong Tong, grabbed her clothing and exclaimed, “Wow, then I want one too! I’m cute too, I want a little lamb!”

Yin Bai lowered her gaze and looked at Wen Wen, who was eagerly looking at her, feeling somewhat amused and exasperated. “You’re quite confident, aren’t you?”

Wen Wen placed her hands on her hips and looked at Tong Tong, saying, “Tong Tong, what do you think? Am I cute or not?”

Sitting in the middle, Tong Tong nodded seriously and gave an objective assessment, “You’re cute, Sister.” Then, she added with equal seriousness, “But I’m cute too.”

After Tong Tong boasted, she and Wen Wen looked up at Yin Bai together, their eyes eagerly fixed on her. “Fairy Sister, since we’re so cute, do we get gifts too?”

Yin Bai was taken aback, thinking to herself that things had really escalated with these two children over the past few months—they were becoming quite cheeky!

Yin Bai reached out and pinched the cheeks of both little ones, smiling slyly, and said, “Alright, alright. You want gifts, huh? After we finish watching the cartoons, let’s do some painting!”

As a result, that afternoon, Yin Bai took the children to the upstairs art studio and spent the entire afternoon indulging in art. In the end, the two children each created an exaggeratedly sized little lamb, and the day concluded with two lifelike little lambs painted by Yin Bai, as gifts.

After sending the children to the neighbor’s house, Yin Bai dove back into the art studio. She spent several days working on a watercolor painting, framed it, and then sent it back to Zuo Jingyou.

After finishing a demanding night scene for her acting, Zuo Jingyou returned to her hotel room and finally had the time to unpack the painting.

At that moment, she had just finished her evening routine and was sitting on the couch in her robe, wearing her glasses, gazing at the vivid watercolor painting. Within the narrow frame lay an expansive desert. On the desert, a tiny pilot stood beside a crashed plane, sketching a pink little lamb with a paper and pen. Greenery radiated from the pilot, even climbing onto the plane’s portholes, infusing countless warm colors into this seemingly lonely world.

Zuo Jingyou reached out and gently touched the face of the little pilot through the frame, her gaze softening.

The little pilot depicted in Yin Bai’s painting was none other than Tong Tong.

Zuo Jingyou looked at her daughter’s innocent face, her heart melting. She carefully placed the painting down and picked up her phone to send Yin Bai a message: “Did you paint Tong Tong?”

Yin Bai was still awake and quickly replied to her message: “No, didn’t you notice?”

Zuo Jingyou had a sense of what was coming and paused before asking her: “Notice what?”

Yin Bai’s response came swiftly: “It’s you.”

“Because Tong Tong really looks like you, and I imagine you were somewhat like her when you were a child. Do you remember? Every adult was once a child.”

“So, I painted this for you!”

Zuo Jingyou read Yin Bai’s words from beginning to end again, not knowing how to respond for a moment.

“All adults were once children.” Zuo Jingyou repeated this sentence to herself, but in her mind, she couldn’t help but recall the day in the pavilion when Yin Bai had looked like a child, joyfully giving her secret signals.

She remembered Yin Bai’s skin, which was whiter than snow. She remembered her gray-blue eyes, deeper than the azure sky, brighter than the darkest night, and even more brilliant than any sapphire.

At this moment, a question arose in her mind: why didn’t Xiao Nian like someone like her?

She wasn’t actually childish and didn’t have any playful intentions; she was someone who could understand people’s hearts.

Why doesn’t Xiao Nian like someone so charming?

Zuo Jingyou pursed her lips and took some time before replying, “Thank you, I really like it.”

Yin Bai seemed quite pleased, “Really? I’m glad you like it!”

Zuo Jingyou got up from the couch, took her phone, and returned to her bedroom. She chatted aimlessly with Yin Bai, asking, “Are you going to sleep? How have Tong Tong and Wen Wen been lately? Have they been bothering you?”

Yin Bai seemed to have a lot of energy, “No, not at all. Everything’s been the same as usual. We’ve been watching ‘Adventure Time’ recently!”

Zuo Jingyou was puzzled, “What’s that?”

Yin Bai proceeded to explain, “It’s just an animated series. If you have time, you should check it out; it’s really good!”

Zuo Jingyou smiled, “Alright, I’ll remember that.”

Yin Bai chatted with her about Tong Tong and Wen Wen, rambling on about things like how they’ve been enjoying ice cream and eating a lot of small cakes lately.

As she continued, Yin Bai suddenly mentioned, “By the way, I’m going to attend an ice sculpture exhibition in a few days. Is your filming almost finished? How about I visit you on the way?”

“You mentioned that it’s snowing on your end, right? Can I come and see it?”

This was clearly a spontaneous suggestion from Yin Bai. Over the past couple of weeks of chatting, Zuo Jingyou had keenly noticed that Yin Bai could be quite whimsical at times and often had spontaneous ideas.

For example, many of the things she had learned recently had been the result of such spontaneous decisions. However, she was intelligent and, despite not being an expert, quickly grasped the basics.

Zuo Jingyou thought for a moment and didn’t reject her, saying, “Sure, but I might not have much time to entertain you.”

Yin Bai didn’t mind at all, saying, “No problem, focus on your filming. I understand!”

“I’ll just go explore on my own then. After all, I’ve invested in your film, right? As the boss, it’s only fitting for me to come and inspect, isn’t it?”

Zuo Jingyou smiled and raised an eyebrow, saying, “Well, you are the bigwig from the capital. I’ll be waiting for your inspection then!”

Yin Bai made an “OK” gesture and then mentioned that she was feeling sleepy. She bid her goodnight and didn’t send any more messages.

As she ended the conversation, Zuo Jingyou checked the time and realized it was nearly midnight. This was later than Yin Bai’s usual bedtime. Or perhaps, over the past few days, Yin Bai had been going to bed a bit later than her usual schedule…

It was as if… as if she was waiting for Zuo Jingyou to finish filming and return to the hotel before going to sleep.

The thought crossed Zuo Jingyou’s mind, and she raised a hand to lightly tap her own forehead, muttering to herself, “What am I thinking…”

It was just a coincidence, nothing more.
