    Where Did Song Linlin Go?

    Profound Yin Realm, core area.

The formation was activated jointly, but the Guardian Elder’s side was already short ten Deacon Elders. These ten were still in other areas of the secret realm. Relying solely on the remaining people to maintain the formation seemed extremely difficult, especially when facing a powerful enemy.

The secret realm was chaotic. The Guardian Elder stood at the forefront, his expression grave. Facing Hong Ye, he didn’t have the slightest confidence in winning. His only hope now was that his group could delay for more time, allowing other experts from the Sect to arrive. At the very least, they couldn’t let Hong Ye actually snatch the Tongyou Fruit.

Chi Qianning didn’t hesitate, charging towards the formation with her sword. The longer this dragged on, the more disadvantageous it would be for her. Waiting for the spectating disciples to retreat had already wasted too much of her time. The outside world must surely know by now that she had appeared within the Profound Yin Realm. There was no telling when other reinforcements might arrive.

She had to resolve this quickly!

The formation’s defensive shield activated. It was a formation capable of both offense and defense, but right now, the Guardian Elder was only thinking of delaying as much as possible. With just the few people on his side, using a powerful killing move would likely drain their mana after just one use. Yet, the enemy was clearly strong and wouldn’t be killed in a single blow.

Risking everything wouldn’t kill Hong Ye, but would instead make it impossible for them to maintain the formation. In that case, it was better to focus all their efforts on resisting the opponent’s attacks and wait for support from the other Sect elders.

Both sides were extremely anxious. Looking at the defensive shield, Chi Qianning, determined to end this quickly1, poured most of her mana into the sword in her hand. The resulting power was naturally terrifying. The sword tip collided with the defensive shield, and the immense energy fluctuation created in that instant could be felt throughout the entire secret realm.

A wave of energy surged outwards, directly knocking over all living creatures within the secret realm. The core location suffered the greatest impact; trees were uprooted by the blast, and the massive shockwave even blew out of the secret realm, sending the disciples guarding the entrance tumbling.

At the very center, the defensive shield finally broke. The formation instantly began to collapse. The elders inside suffered the formation’s backlash, each spitting out a mouthful of blood. Then, affected by the residual power of the shockwave, they were sent flying backward, crashing into obstacles and spitting out more blood.

The impact of this strike was simply too great. Presumably, even those experts who didn’t know an enemy had entered the secret realm must have now sensed the fluctuation from this blow. It wouldn’t be long before they arrived.

This was no longer a place to linger. With no one left to stop her, Chi Qianning ignored the life or death of the elders, having no intention of finishing them off2. The Tongyou Fruit was not far away. Despite the huge commotion, the fruit remained unharmed.

It was entirely bright red, growing on a black branch. The fruit was plump and round, constantly emitting a peculiar fragrance. The Yin power was so dense it formed liquid; the small area was filled with mist, strangely raining black droplets condensed from pure dark Yin energy.

Now that the formation was broken, the fragrance drifted into her nose, like an addictive poison. Just smelling it nearly caused the currently unstable Chi Qianning to lose control; her red eyes instantly deepened.

This fruit inherently attracted Yin-attribute beings, and its scent held an irresistible allure for serpentine creatures. Chi Qianning fit both categories perfectly and was momentarily affected by the Tongyou Fruit. Fortunately, she quickly stabilized her mind.

Chi Qianning approached the Tongyou Fruit and plucked it from the branch. Black raindrops fell on her body, streams of power drilling through her skin into her body, replenishing her depleted energy. However, Chi Qianning didn’t linger. After picking the item, she prepared to leave the secret realm.

Just then, the sound of footsteps suddenly came from nearby. This abrupt noise naturally didn’t escape Chi Qianning’s ears. She turned her head towards the direction of the newcomer, inwardly surprised:

Had the other elders of the Xuanyun Sect arrived so quickly?

As her gaze shifted, the person who arrived wasn’t one of the figures she imagined, but rather someone Chi Qianning knew but hadn’t expected—Ye Tingran.

Ye Tingran had originally been near the core area, busy dealing with the Beast Tide alongside those ten Deacon Elders. She had been fighting on the front lines. It wasn’t until Tan Bixuan attacked and she saw disciples starting to flee that she realized an enemy had infiltrated behind her.

She didn’t have time to rest and intended to go help at the rear. But before she had taken two steps, news came that the enemy had already been captured alive. Ye Tingran had no choice but to return to the Beast Tide area. However, not long after, an extremely powerful aura suddenly erupted from the very core location. This aura made the demonic beasts submit, prostrating themselves on the ground, completely afraid to move.

Just as Ye Tingran was about to go see what had happened at the rear again, the crowd from behind surged out all at once, fleeing frantically towards the periphery. She was pushed further and further away from the core location. Later, she was unlucky enough to be directly teleported to the secret realm entrance by an elder.

Ye Tingran didn’t want to flee, so she could only start re-entering the forest from the periphery, heading towards the core area. All the other disciples she encountered on the way were fleeing outwards; she was the only one continuously heading deeper. Finally, Ye Tingran managed to get close to the core location, only to be hit by a strong gust of wind that sent her tumbling.

Fortunately, Ye Tingran’s back hit a large tree, preventing her body from being blown too far. She sensed the fluctuations of battle from the core location, knowing the elders must be fighting the enemy. Now the outcome was decided, and she was very curious who had won in the end.

And now, Ye Tingran finally stepped into the core location. But looking at the scene before her, she was instantly shocked. The area was a complete wreck, and the place where the elders had originally stood was now blasted into a large crater. The elders themselves were scattered on the ground, spitting blood, their life status unknown.

Her arrival immediately caught the attention of everyone present. The Guardian Elder was lying not far from Ye Tingran. When he saw the newcomer was Ye Tingran, he was clearly stunned. How could a disciple dare to run towards the core location at a time like this, risking their life? Weren’t all the disciples fleeing far away from the core area?!

He had thought it must be an elder arriving, but it turned out to be a disciple.

The Guardian Elder recognized Ye Tingran; he had been the one to bring this girl into the Sect from the mortal world. Her talent was excellent; given time, she would surely become a pillar3 of the Sect. He didn’t have time to question why she had come here. Using all his strength, he shouted at Ye Tingran:

    “Run!!! Don’t stay here!”

As he spoke, he spat out another large mouthful of blood. Due to the formation’s backlash and the residual power from Hong Ye’s attack, he had suffered severe internal injuries. He feared it would take more than half a year of recuperation to barely recover, and there would still be some latent injuries left behind.

Seeing the elder still urging her to flee while spitting blood, Ye Tingran was even less likely to run away on her own accord. She immediately drew the longsword in her hand, warily watching the only other person still standing on the scene besides herself. That person must be the culprit behind all this.

The person wore a plain dress, likely a woman, but Ye Tingran couldn’t see her face clearly. At this moment, the person held a bright red fruit in her hand. Just one look at this fruit revealed its extraordinariness. Ye Tingran quickly guessed that the enemy had attacked the elders to steal this fruit.

Ye Tingran could feel the opponent’s gaze land on her. Enduring the immense pressure radiating from the enemy, she held her sword with both hands, intending to block the other’s departure.

She could naturally see that the enemy was powerful. Even so many elders had been beaten until they were spitting blood and couldn’t get up. As a junior only at the late Golden Core stage, she was even less likely to be the enemy’s match. But there was no one else left on the scene who could stop the enemy. The opponent had not only caused such chaos and injured the elders but was now preparing to leave after stealing something from the Sect.

Ye Tingran couldn’t accept just running away like this, letting the opponent leave without any resistance. Even if she might be killed, she was unwilling to retreat.

The nearby elder saw that Ye Tingran not only ignored his advice to flee but had even drawn her sword. Seeing Ye Tingran’s stance, ready to fight the enemy head-on at any moment, he anxiously tried to get up, only to aggravate his internal injuries, nearly spitting out another mouthful of blood.

The Guardian Elder coughed sharply a few times, swallowing the blood back down. He knew full well that Ye Tingran’s current actions were far too dangerous. Originally, her strength was weak and wouldn’t be noticed by the enemy; the opponent might very well have just ignored her.

But Ye Tingran had drawn her sword. This was clearly provoking the enemy. Even if the enemy hadn’t intended to act initially, they would surely notice Ye Tingran’s behavior now. Being pointed at with a sword by someone so much weaker—how could this be tolerated? The dignity of a powerful expert was being challenged.

“Ye Tingran! Retreat quickly!!!” the Guardian Elder shouted anxiously, wishing he could rush over and take her weapon away. Unfortunately, he was lying on the ground, completely immobile.

Just now, so many of them plus the formation couldn’t even block one move from Hong Ye. Wasn’t Ye Tingran just courting death by going over now?

His own achievements in this life were likely capped. If an old bag of bones like him died, so be it. But Ye Tingran was still young and very talented. It would be too much of a pity for her to die here like this.

But Ye Tingran still showed no intention of retreating. Instead, she said, “Elder, just rest easy there. I will do my best to hold back the enemy!”

Ye Tingran didn’t dare make any grand claims; she wasn’t even sure how long she could hold out. But even if it was just for a moment, delaying even slightly increased the chance that the Sect’s experts would arrive. So, at this moment, she looked at the enemy with eyes that faced death unflinchingly4.

Standing not far away, Chi Qianning quietly watched the righteous exchange between these two. Having read many of the storybooks5 Song Linlin bought these days, she felt like she had become the standard villain character. Looking at Ye Tingran, who had suddenly appeared and was preparing to attack her, she just found it incredibly annoying.

If all the disciples still inside the secret realm stood up to block her like Ye Tingran, although they posed no threat to Chi Qianning, dealing with them would still distract her and somewhat slow down her retreat.

Too lazy to waste words on Ye Tingran, Chi Qianning was in a hurry to leave. She put away the Tongyou Fruit, and in the next second, she appeared almost right in front of Ye Tingran, raising her hand to deal with this nuisance.

Ye Tingran was startled, completely unable to see how the enemy had arrived before her so quickly. She looked at the opponent’s peculiar thin sword, trying to see the attack’s movement. But even before the thin sword struck, Ye Tingran felt her eyes sting from the sharp sword intent6 emanating from the blade, and she quickly closed her eyes.

Fortunately, she was already holding her sword and subconsciously executed a sword technique. Chi Qianning hadn’t been guarding against Ye Tingran at all, given the huge disparity in their strength. For a moment, she didn’t notice and actually let Ye Tingran’s sword injure her.

The blade grazed her forearm, leaving a very shallow cut. This bit of stinging pain wasn’t enough to bother Chi Qianning; she was just surprised that Ye Tingran could actually hit her, even if it was just a superficial wound.

But surprise was surprise; Chi Qianning’s hand didn’t stop. The same hand that was now wounded delivered a chop directly to the back of Ye Tingran’s neck. Although she found this person popping up now annoying, she hadn’t intended to kill Ye Tingran.

In fact, if Chi Qianning had intended to stab with her sword just now instead of reaching out to knock Ye Tingran unconscious, the latter certainly wouldn’t have even managed to injure her.

The force of this blow was well controlled. Striking the back of the neck could easily shatter Ye Tingran’s cervical vertebrae if too much force was used, but too little wouldn’t knock her out. Ye Tingran’s movements instantly halted, her consciousness went black, and then her body went limp, collapsing to the ground.

This time, Chi Qianning wasn’t kind enough to catch her, letting Ye Tingran fall straight onto the ground. As for whether she’d get bruised or injured from the fall, that wasn’t Chi Qianning’s concern.

The Guardian Elder lying nearby had been terrified when he saw Hong Ye rush directly towards Ye Tingran and attack. He thought Ye Tingran would be pierced by the sword in the next second. But instead, Hong Ye didn’t raise her sword at all, but rather reached out and knocked Ye Tingran unconscious.

This made the Guardian Elder sigh in relief. As long as she wasn’t dead, it was fine. Being knocked out was already the best possible outcome.

As for the Tongyou Fruit, he couldn’t get up at all right now. The other elders were injured even more severely than him, and the status of several was still unknown. The only one who could stand, Ye Tingran, had also been knocked out and was lying on the ground. He could only let Hong Ye take the Tongyou Fruit.

If the item was lost, then it was lost. Anyway, no one in the Sect could use the Tongyou Fruit. Encountering an expert of Hong Ye’s caliber, having such low casualties was already incredibly fortunate. He imagined that even if the Sect Master came, he wouldn’t be blamed.

After dealing with Ye Tingran, Chi Qianning didn’t linger any longer. She directly passed by Ye Tingran and the elders on the ground, quickly leaving the core location without looking back. Her speed was immense, and with no one to block her now, she reached the middle area in less than two seconds.

There were still many elders and guards dispatched to quell the Beast Tide within the secret realm, but this group’s strength was low, posing no threat whatsoever. So much so that when Chi Qianning passed by them, these people only felt a gust of wind sweep past, completely unaware of what had happened.

Chi Qianning quickly left the secret realm and arrived outside.

Meanwhile, inside the secret realm, half a minute after Chi Qianning left, someone else finally arrived in the core area. A man who looked simple and unadorned suddenly descended. He wore coarse white clothes with patches, looking like an ordinary passerby at first glance. But upon closer inspection, one would increasingly notice the profound quality of his aura.

The Guardian Elder lying on the ground looked at the man who had suddenly descended. The man’s appearance was ordinary, yet he possessed an aura that was mysterious and profound7. He immediately recognized who this was and struggled to get up and bow, but ended up aggravating his internal injuries. A gentle stream of spiritual energy flowed into the Guardian Elder’s body, soothing the pain of his wounds.

“No need for formalities; you need to rest quietly,” the man said.

The Guardian Elder looked overwhelmed by the favor and quickly nodded. “Yes, Sect Master.”

This man was the mysterious Sect Master of the Xuanyun Sect. Even some elders within the Sect might not have seen his true face. This Sect Master spent years in secluded cultivation8 on the mountain and rarely came down. Clearly, he had sensed the fluctuations from the battle and made a special trip.

Without waiting for the Sect Master to ask, the Guardian Elder immediately reported, “Someone broke into the Profound Yin Realm this time and stole the Tongyou Fruit. The first to appear was the daughter of the Wenxin Cult leader. We captured her alive, but later Hong Ye killed her and snatched the Tongyou Fruit.”

    “Hong Ye?”

Mentioning this name, the Sect Master also frowned slightly. He had met Hong Ye back when she hadn’t fully matured. At that time, Hong Ye didn’t possess her current strength, yet she still dared to challenge those long-famous experts everywhere. Her actions were erratic and unpredictable. Later, the righteous factions even organized a campaign to suppress and eliminate her, deploying numerous experts, but ultimately failed to capture her.

Subsequently, Hong Ye naturally began a continuous campaign of revenge; none escaped her grasp. But now… his Xuanyun Sect had never provoked her, so why did she come here to cause trouble?

The Sect Master shook his head and sighed. There was no one here who could resist Hong Ye; the casualties must surely be significant. “How many people did she kill?”

    “Uh… one.”

Now the Sect Master was surprised too. “One? Who?”

The Guardian Elder pointed towards the headless female corpse. “She only killed the daughter of the Wenxin Cult leader. She had no intention of killing us elders; we were all injured by the formation’s backlash and the shockwaves from the fight. She didn’t even kill any disciples. She only made her move after most of the disciples had fled.”

Hearing this, the Sect Master was also completely bewildered9. Was this still the Hong Ye he remembered? She had only killed someone from the Demonic Path.

“Sect Master, the Tongyou Fruit was stolen. Should we pursue?” the Guardian Elder asked the question foremost on his mind.

“Forget it. Since she has already escaped, we won’t be able to catch her.”

The Sect Master shook his head. Although they had been robbed, there weren’t significant casualties, and what was stolen was the Tongyou Fruit, which they couldn’t use anyway. If it’s lost, it’s lost. The Sect Master had always been someone who viewed things with detachment. “The core is lost, and the secret realm won’t last much longer either. Have Shou Yu go to the treasury and pick something else to serve as the core.”

    Outside.

When Chi Qianning walked out of the secret realm, she was once again wearing the Xuanyun Sect uniform. She walked openly before everyone, her gaze sweeping around, but she didn’t immediately spot Song Linlin.

This made Chi Qianning frown. She remembered telling Song Linlin to go out first and wait, but now she couldn’t see her.

She sensed the auras of the people around her, trying to find Song Linlin’s among them. If Song Linlin were in this crowd, she would definitely find her quickly. But still, she found nothing.

“Where is she?” Chi Qianning murmured in confusion.

An elder at the entrance noticed Chi Qianning, who had just emerged. He said to her, “You just came out? Then go with these few people to guard the north side.”

Several people stood beside the elder, clearly also having slowly escaped from the secret realm later. Now they were grouped into a small team, preparing to go stand guard together. After they explained, Chi Qianning understood why she couldn’t find Song Linlin.

Song Linlin must have been assigned to stand guard somewhere else, which is why she couldn’t sense her aura now. Of course, Chi Qianning had no intention of serving as a guard for the Xuanyun Sect. On the way to the guard post, she slipped away from the team and began heading to different areas to search for Song Linlin.

Her teammates successfully forgot Chi Qianning’s existence, letting her leave so easily. The guard posts surrounded the entire secret realm, numerous and scattered. Except for the entrance where large numbers of personnel gathered, other locations usually only had small teams. Chi Qianning wasn’t sure which area Song Linlin was in and could only search place by place.

Fortunately, her perception range was vast; she didn’t need to look at each person individually, just stand outside the guard posts and sense the auras. However, even at her speed, after half a shichen10, she had only searched half the areas, and there wasn’t even a trace of Song Linlin’s lingering aura in those places.

Chi Qianning grew increasingly frustrated at not seeing Song Linlin. She walked and walked until she ended up back at the assembly point outside the secret realm entrance. A large number of personnel were gathered here. Chi Qianning felt searching on her own was too inefficient and decided to ask others if they had seen Song Linlin.

From a distance, she saw Ye Tingran again. Ye Tingran and the group of elders lying on the ground had been teleported outside with a wave of the Sect Master’s hand. She hadn’t been injured at all and quickly woke up, now looking full of life11 again.

Chi Qianning felt no awkwardness or guilt about having knocked her out. Seeing a somewhat familiar face was rare, so she decided to ask Ye Tingran and try her luck.

Ye Tingran was currently talking to several other people, and her expression wasn’t good. “You said Luo Jiang Cliff is on fire?”

“Yeah! It must be burning there; the smoke is coming from that direction.”

“That’s a guard post. Why would it catch fire for no reason?” Ye Tingran pondered for two seconds, then said, “I’ll go take a look there. Something might have happened.”

“We’ll go too!” the others immediately chimed in.

Chi Qianning overheard what they were saying and couldn’t help frowning. She hadn’t been to that place yet. Now that it was on fire, something must have happened.

Ye Tingran’s peripheral vision noticed Chi Qianning approaching. The latter’s appearance was hard to ignore. She turned her head but didn’t see Song Linlin beside Chi Qianning. She asked, “Lin Qianqian, haven’t you been assigned a guard post yet?”

Chi Qianning, having just returned from skipping duty, calmly shook her head. “Do you know where Song Linlin is? I’m looking for her.”

    “No.”

Ye Tingran shook her head. She had only just woken up, how could she possibly know Song Linlin’s whereabouts? Seeing Lin Qianqian hadn’t been assigned a post, she habitually asked, “We’re planning to go check the situation at Luo Jiang Cliff. There’s a fire there. Do you want to come with us?”

Chi Qianning initially wanted to refuse, but the unusual fire in that location made her hesitate. She couldn’t find Song Linlin for the time being anyway, and she hadn’t searched the area near Luo Jiang Cliff yet. She could go check it out along the way. So, she nodded, “Okay.”

The group formed a small team, reported to an elder, and then started walking towards Luo Jiang Cliff. It was a very remote place, requiring a guard team of fewer than ten people. Usually, very few people went there. The group walked further and further into the remote area, surrounded by silence.

Chi Qianning suddenly had a bad feeling. Song Linlin loved running off to secluded places. Could she really have gone to that Luo Jiang Cliff?

No, no, no, that girl is so afraid of death, she would definitely go somewhere with lots of people for safety, where someone could protect her.

She followed the group silently. The others chatted occasionally, but seeing Chi Qianning’s cold expression, although curious about her, they didn’t dare approach to strike up a conversation.

As the group got closer to Luo Jiang Cliff, the smell of smoke from the fire filled the air. In the distance, a faint plume of black smoke could be seen rising into the sky. Judging by the smoke, the fire there seemed to be almost out. The group couldn’t help but quicken their pace.

Soon, they could see the cliff from afar. The ground there was scorched black. The fire seemed to have started near the cliff edge. Fortunately, there weren’t many flammable plants near the cliff; otherwise, it would have surely caused a forest fire.

The air was thick with the acrid smell, but Chi Qianning caught a faint, barely perceptible fragrance. The scent was very light; from this distance, she could only catch a whiff, and it dispersed with a gust of wind, making it hard to pinpoint. Chi Qianning’s expression turned grim. This was Song Linlin’s scent.

To Chi Qianning, Song Linlin’s scent was different from others, similar to the Tongyou Fruit; Song Linlin smelled very fragrant to her. She could even rely on this unique scent to accurately find Song Linlin among tens of thousands of people.

But now, Chi Qianning smelled Song Linlin’s scent at Luo Jiang Cliff after a fire had occurred.

She must have smelled wrong. How could she possibly come to a place like this?

Chi Qianning silently told herself, yet her feet uncontrollably started running, sprinting towards the cliff.

“Hey! What’s wrong with you?” The person standing next to Chi Qianning was bumped on the shoulder as she suddenly started running and shouted questioningly at the retreating back.

Ye Tingran also called out in confusion, “Lin Qianqian?”

However, the person ahead didn’t stop at all, not even offering a reply, just running faster and faster, breaking from a jog into a full sprint. The others didn’t understand why she suddenly acted like this, but they also started running, following behind Chi Qianning.

The acrid smell in the air grew stronger, filled with the choking odor of burning. The flames at the cliff edge hadn’t completely died out yet; a small patch of fire still burned stubbornly.

    “Impossible, impossible…”

Chi Qianning clearly felt that as she got closer, the faint fragrance grew slightly stronger, yet remained very light. The pungent smell of burning interfered with her ability to distinguish the fragrance in the air, but regardless, Song Linlin’s scent was definitely here.

But besides the scorched earth, there was no sign of anyone near the cliff.

“Lin Qianqian, don’t run so fast!” The others, prompted by Ye Tingran’s earlier shout, now knew the name of the person ahead.

“Slow down, we can’t keep up!”

Several people struggled to catch up behind her, not expecting that after running for so long in the secret realm, they would have to run again after coming out.

Chi Qianning finally emerged from the woods and reached the burnt cliff edge. She stood there, looking around, still seeing no one. The ground was similarly scorched black, with some small flames still burning.

Looking at this scorched area, Chi Qianning froze. She stood rooted to the spot. This time, she could clearly sense Song Linlin’s scent in the air. She had definitely been here. But there was no one to be seen by the cliff, and even the scent trail ended here.

Where could Song Linlin have gone?

Chi Qianning suddenly fell silent. Standing there, she abruptly felt a sense of bewilderment.

The people behind finally arrived, all panting heavily. Only Ye Tingran was slightly better off, her breathing merely quickened after running that distance.

They looked at Chi Qianning standing there in a daze and were about to say something. However, when their eyes fell upon the scorched area, they suddenly clamped their mouths shut. On the blackened ground, the remnants of a skeleton could be vaguely seen burning, surrounded by scattered, charred bone fragments.

A silence fell over the scene. They didn’t need words to guess what had happened here.

“There’s something over there!” one person exclaimed, pointing.

At her gesture, everyone else looked in that direction. Several people walked over together. On the ground lay a shattered jade token. Chi Qianning knelt down and picked up the largest fragment. Wiping away the surface ash, three characters were clearly engraved on the jade token:

    Song Linlin.

OHH SHE’S GONNA BE SO MAD

    Note
