Ex-Girlfriend – Chapter 112

Life and Death Examination Room 19
Examination God
Wan Yan curved her lips, stroking the little tiger along its fur.
Xin Lan frowned, ingesting her own blood. The feeling of rejection made the crease between her brows deepen.
“Try mine.”
Wan Yan extended her hand.
Actually, she would have preferred Xin Lan to drink from her neck, just like in that instance where she pretended to be a vampire, but Xin Lan didn’t have canine teeth, so it probably wasn’t possible.
How romantic that would be, Wan Yan thought, holding out her hand.
“No need.”
Xin Lan shook her head, refusing firmly.
“If you’re uncomfortable, just try it. It won’t kill you anyway.”
Wan Yan swiftly cut her own hand. The scent of blood filled the air. Xin Lan’s stomach churned, expressing its craving.
Xin Lan cursed this damned body but still reluctantly took a few sips of Wan Yan’s blood.
Just enough to taste1. Xin Lan told Wan Yan to hurry and bandage it up.
“It seems that thing feels the drama of us killing each other isn’t good enough yet.”
It was already a situation of internal division, multiple factions. And this experimental body needed to consume human blood. If someone else had inherited this body, it was hard to guarantee it wouldn’t lead to a bloodbath2.
So, they were basically raising Gu3?
That wasn’t wrong either. The essence of this world was an elimination tournament, selecting winners through constant exams and competitions to realize the so-called new world.
“Continue forward or rest for the night?”
“Let’s rest for a bit. There’s enough time.”
The duration of this exam was fifteen days. The travel time from the laboratory to the various bases was about one day. Wan Yan looked at the map; they weren’t very far from the destination now.
“Whose hands should we put it in first?”
Xin Lan and Wan Yan planned a two-pronged approach4. In that case, they couldn’t take the password box to just any one base.
Otherwise, once success was determined at one, it would ruin things.
So they needed to find someone to hold onto this box to allow for subsequent operations.
Actually, they could choose a slower method. Wan Yan looked at Xin Lan, waiting for her decision.
“Let’s do it together.”
Although they didn’t know how feasible it was, they had to try to find out.
Suddenly, there was movement from outside. Xin Lan and Wan Yan went out and saw a teammate who had knocked a zombie to the ground.
“Just a small zombie. Did we disturb you?”
Chen Bai put away the iron pipe in his hand, smiling at Xin Lan and the others, still looking lackadaisical and not entirely serious.
Xin Lan didn’t answer, walking straight over to bring the car around and fill it with gas.
After everyone had eaten and taken care of their personal needs, they began to get into the car one after another. Some closed their eyes for a short rest, while others stared blankly outside.
The car remained silent for a long time before someone spoke up.
“Can your plan really work?”
The one asking was Shizi. Worry appeared on the big boy’s face, a gravity that didn’t match his age.
“We’ll know once we try, won’t we?”
Xin Lan chewed on gum she had swiped from a store. After drinking Wan Yan’s blood just now, there was always that lingering taste of blood in her mouth.
“But…”
Shizi looked hesitant, and the expressions of the others also changed slightly.
“If it succeeds, then people from our two different bases can all rejoice5. If it fails, then we’ll discuss countermeasures again.”
Xin Lan looked out the window at the pitch-black night, her voice scattering in the wind.
“As for people from bases other than these two, I can’t guarantee anything.”
“There are other bases?”
Ah Cheng asked.
“Hard to say.”
Xin Lan blew a bubble with her gum, watching it pop in the air.
Ah Cheng’s gaze swept over everyone behind them. The people she looked at gently shook their heads.
“You all deny it, so does that mean there aren’t any?”
Xin Lan didn’t comment. She had just said it wasn’t certain.
After all, nobody knew if the rules were playing some kind of word game6 again. Whether the specifically indicated directions were misleading or actually true, nobody could say for sure.
A cool hand suddenly covered the back of hers. Xin Lan looked up to see Wan Yan smiling at her.
Xin Lan thought for a moment, then leaned closer to whisper in Wan Yan’s ear7.
“If I hadn’t come along, how would you have completed this mission?”
The warm breath accompanying her words sprayed entirely onto Wan Yan’s earlobe. Her ear turned red at a speed visible to the naked eye, the blush spreading down to the base of her neck.
Wan Yan hadn’t known this body was so sensitive. Just this contact sent a jolt through her.
Xin Lan naturally noticed Wan Yan’s change too. She raised an eyebrow and reached out to pinch Wan Yan’s earlobe.
Felt pretty good.
Wan Yan replied in a breathy whisper near Xin Lan’s ear, bringing a ticklish sensation.
Xin Lan reached up to rub her own ear and straightened up.
“So I delayed you after all.”
The others heard this sentence and looked towards the people in the front seats.
“How could it be a delay? I’m very happy to be able to accompany you, and besides, I requested this myself.”
Actually, the Host wasn’t originally required to enter this mission, but Wan Yan, for her own selfish reasons, had pulled Xin Lan in.
She was afraid that after she finished the mission and returned, her timeline wouldn’t match up with Xin Lan’s anymore.
And the thought of not being able to be by Xin Lan’s side, accompanying her in a world, felt very disheartening.
Absolutely not acceptable.
The others who heard the conversation felt like they were intruding. They really shouldn’t have been curious. This mouthful of dog food9 was a bit hard to swallow10.
The one who actually felt most choked up was Ling Jiu.
As a System with no sense of presence, she felt she shouldn’t be in the car, but under it.
So sweet, sickeningly sweet.11
Combining the Commander’s actions in previous worlds, it added up to a thick volume of a wife-chasing history, a complete model tutorial.
Ling Jiu sometimes wanted to say something to make her presence known12, but then thought it seemed unnecessary, so she simply stayed quiet as a chicken, eating her potato chips.
Xin Lan used to be the most intolerant of these kinds of sticky-sweet sweet nothings.
If anyone dared say such things in front of her, they’d be lucky not to get kicked out by her.
But hearing Wan Yan say these words was, damn it, surprisingly pleasant.
“Is your base closer or is mine?”
Wan Yan could only see a dot on the map representing her destination and pointed it out.
It didn’t matter to her which one they went to first; there was just no need to take a detour.
“Mine.”
“Okay.”
“Need to sleep for a bit?”
Xin Lan shook her head, not feeling particularly tired.
The car fell silent again, no one making a sound.
Wan Yan’s hand holding Xin Lan’s never loosened. Her originally cool hand had warmed up from being held like this.
Ah Cheng looked enviously at the two people in front. How nice, such good luck, two people in love finding each other, able to support each other and walk on together.
The long night was clear and quiet, with only the occasional wind blowing, making a whooshing sound13.
Unknowingly, Xin Lan closed her eyes and drifted into a light sleep.
Wan Yan wasn’t sleepy. She leaned back in her seat, tilted towards Xin Lan.
Suddenly, a request for a mental connection appeared in her mind, coming from Ling Jiu. Wan Yan immediately accepted it.
【Wan Yan】: What’s wrong? Does Ah Lan need me for something?
【Ling Jiu】: No, no, Host is asleep.
【Wan Yan】: Oh, I see.
Her attitude instantly shifted from eager to indifferent, incredibly realistic.
【Ling Jiu】: Commander, when are you planning to confess again?
Ling Jiu rubbed her hands together, really wanting to witness it.
As someone who had witnessed the development of their feelings, she felt she shouldn’t miss the chance when they established their relationship.
【Wan Yan】: When we return to reality.
The last confession was too rushed. Next time, she definitely had to prepare meticulously.
【Wan Yan】: I might need your help then, might have to trouble you.
【Ling Jiu】: No trouble, no trouble! How could Host’s lifelong happiness be trouble?
If the Host’s partner were human, she might have had reservations, intervening only if absolutely necessary. But the other party was one of their Systems, and a senior at that. This was absolutely fine, extremely fine.
Seeing the Host happy was also a very joyful thing for them Systems.
From the beginning, Ling Jiu hadn’t worried about Xin Lan’s love life.
She always felt her Lan-jie was destined to be alone.
Fortunately, there was a discerning14 System around.
And Lan-jie was showing signs of being moved too. Simply wonderful.
【Ling Jiu】: Commander, how exactly did you fall in love with my Host?
Ling Jiu recalled the previous few worlds. Host’s combat power wasn’t diminished in any of them. Where exactly did the feeling of being moved come from?
【Wan Yan】: Don’t you think the way she beats people up is particularly cool and charming?
【Ling Jiu】: ???
She only found it particularly brutal.
So the Commander was into that type15?
Can’t afford to offend, can’t afford to offend.
【Wan Yan】: In my eyes, everything about her is good. Isn’t liking her the most natural thing? It’s just that she doesn’t know how to cherish herself enough.
Xin Lan always felt getting hurt a little was no big deal. If she had the ability, she’d shoulder the responsibility, always walking at the very front.
Such a person was destined to be the center of attention16. Others saw her shining brightly, but Wan Yan’s heart ached for how much tempering she must have gone through to become the person she was today, someone who viewed everything as a small matter.
There’s no such thing as a born expert. Wan Yan didn’t know what Xin Lan had experienced in the past. She hadn’t looked up Xin Lan’s records; she knew Xin Lan would definitely be unhappy if she found out.
Besides, she wanted to hear it from Xin Lan’s own lips.
After they got together.
Liking someone, it’s hard to count on your fingers17 how good that person is. It’s more of a profound and subtle feeling. Just seeing them brings happiness.
Beside her, Xin Lan was still asleep, her brow smooth. It made the corners of Wan Yan’s mouth lift slightly.
Upon arriving at one of the bases, Xin Lan and Wan Yan had a brief conversation.
“This might fail.”
Wan Yan said this.
“But it doesn’t matter much.”
Xin Lan added, and the two looked at each other with perfect understanding.
This might fail, but it doesn’t matter.
Xin Lan and Wan Yan had considered several scenarios, devising countermeasures for each one.
Entering the base required an inspection.
It was still the early days of the apocalypse; it was clear the base’s development wasn’t very complete. There were no specialized tools for testing viruses. Wan Yan noticed that the guards around didn’t seem to have abilities either.
The base’s inspection method was still quite simple and crude: directly checking for scratches or bite marks on the body. This inevitably required removing clothes.
Wan Yan watched the classmates planning to follow along for the inspection, then directly pulled out an energy gun, pointing it at the head of the person in charge.
“I want to see your main person in charge.”
Ah Cheng and the others hadn’t expected Wan Yan to be so direct. But thinking about what they were here for, it seemed this directness was exactly what was needed.
Xin Lan held the password box, waiting idly in the car, propping her chin up as she looked at the base gate not far away.
First time a fight didn’t involve her. She was quite skilled at this sort of threatening business.
