    Choice

    Let go of everything

This sleep was not □□ stable.

Dreams invaded, scenes from the real world and virtual world intertwined and reflected each other.

Lu Yinxi dreamed of a fork in the road, her mother Gu Mingyu and Jian Qing appeared simultaneously at that intersection, two roads, seemingly leading to different worlds.

She stood between the two people, caught in a dilemma, unable to choose.

In the end, both people turned and left.

She instinctively chose to grab Jian Qing’s wrist.

    Truly unfilial…

She despised herself in her heart.

Consciousness drifted up and down, a chill came over her body, faintly hearing the sound of lightning and thunder in her ears.

    It’s raining.

A flash of lightning passed, consciousness was slightly awakened, Lu Yinxi wearily reached out, fumbling for the bedside table, found the air conditioner remote control, with a “beep”, turned off the air conditioner.

Consciousness gradually awakened from deep sleep, she reflected on that dream with extremely obvious symbolic meaning.

Dreams are a form of subconscious expression, who her inner self leaned towards was self-evident.

Emotions can have a bias, but reason and morality are a kind of constraint.

Moreover, she wasn’t clear yet whether she ultimately had the choice to leave or stay.

Lu Yinxi, with sleepy eyes, turned on the starry night light at the bedside.

She had been sleeping in Jian Qing’s master bedroom recently.

Starlight filled the room, without Jian Qing’s company beside her.

The phone on the bedside table had gone somewhere unknown, only Jian Qing’s watch lay there.

Lu Yinxi rubbed her eyes and got out of bed, going to the living room to find someone.

The living room was pitch black, outside there was lightning and thunder, heavy rain pouring.

    “Dr. Jian…”

    “Teacher Jian…”

    “Jian Qing, are you home?”

Lu Yinxi softly called her name.

Jian Qing wouldn’t give nicknames to others, nor was she used to others calling her by nicknames. Usually in the department, when peers called out “Ah Qing,” she would feel uncomfortable.

She was accustomed to being alone, deep in her heart, she couldn’t quite get used to this kind of intimacy.

Lu Yinxi noticed this point, and always called her by her full name, or called her doctor, teacher.

In the dim interior, there was no response.

“Click”, “click”, Lu Yinxi pressed the switches for the indoor lights one by one, with no reaction, still in complete darkness.

Power outage? Or tripped circuit breaker?

The first thought that surged in her mind was, fortunately Jian Qing wasn’t home, otherwise, being so dark, she would probably be scared.

Lu Yinxi fumbled back to the bedroom in the dark, brought out a table lamp, searched all around for her phone, wanting to call and contact Jian Qing, ask her, so late, where had she gone?

Was there an emergency at the hospital that needed to be dealt with?

Her phone was never turned off, sometimes the hospital would call in the middle of the night, calling her over.

But today wasn’t her second shift.

Sofa, coffee table, desk, Lu Yinxi searched around with the table lamp, but couldn’t find her own phone.

She clearly remembered, before sleeping, she had put it on the bedside table.

Did Jian Qing take her phone along when she went out?

But their phones, one white and one black, were easily distinguishable, not likely to be mistaken.

Lu Yinxi fumbled in the darkness for quite a while, didn’t find her phone, sat on the sofa, helplessly fidgeting with her hair.

The appraisal report she had placed on the coffee table was also gone…

Lu Yinxi naturally developed negative associations.

But she wanted to have more trust in Jian Qing, unwilling to think too badly of people again.

At that time in the evening, she had slightly pondered Jian Qing’s behavior, hadn’t spoken yet, just hesitated to speak, Jian Qing had already seen through her, her gaze suddenly turning cold, as if having received some kind of hurt, entering a state of alertness.

She could only give a hug to soothe.

She could only believe that Jian Qing wouldn’t do anything out of line.

Otherwise, they would have no future to speak of.

    Had to do something.

Staying in a dark environment was too boring.

    No electricity, no internet.

Lu Yinxi changed out of her pajamas, put on casual clothes, tied up her long hair, brought in the clothes from the balcony, turned off all electrical appliances in the house, unplugged all sockets, took the table lamp, brought the keys, wore rubber gloves, went out to check the circuit breaker.

The electrical box was at the corner of the stairway.

Lu Yinxi inserted the key, opened the box door, checked the circuits one by one, found that it had tripped.

The leakage protection reset button hadn’t popped out, so it probably wasn’t a leakage that caused the trip.

Lu Yinxi pushed up the circuit breaker, returned home, turned on the lights, searched for the phone again in the light, still couldn’t find it.

She took out the computer, logged into social software, contacted Jian Qing, sent over a few messages.

【Dr. Jian, did you take my phone with you?】

【The house just had a power trip, need to call a technician tomorrow to check the house’s electrical circuits.】

【I’m at home, waiting for you to come back.】

Jian Qing was online, but hadn’t replied for a long time.

Lu Yinxi sat alone on the sofa, waiting for her reply, waiting for her to come back.

It was raining heavily outside, she didn’t know if she had taken an umbrella when she went out.

Now there was light in the house, she could come back without worry.

Why wasn’t she coming back yet?

Rain hit the glass of the floor-to-ceiling windows, Lu Yinxi looked over, outside was pitch black.

She remembered the indiscretion by the floor-to-ceiling windows during the day, a faint blush appeared on her face.

Jian Qing still hadn’t replied, the embarrassment in Lu Yinxi’s heart was quickly replaced by bitterness.

She put on the computer headphones, made a video call to Jian Qing.

It rang for a few seconds, the call connected.

Lu Yinxi heard the sound of rain on the other end, softly asked: “Where are you?”

The other end of the phone was silent for a moment, then answered: “I’m on my way back.”

The tone was calm, carrying no emotion.

Lu Yinxi asked again: “Where did you go?”

“Wait for me to come back.” Jian Qing didn’t answer Lu Yinxi’s question, hung up the phone.

Lu Yinxi closed the computer screen, sat on the sofa, let out a sigh.

She stood up, walked around the living room twice, went back to the bedroom to get an umbrella, placed it on the storage rack by the door.

She planned to put it in Jian Qing’s car for backup when she went out tomorrow, in case Jian Qing went out without an umbrella in the future.

Then went to the kitchen to fry a fragrant fried egg, put on the pot to cook a small half bowl of ginger soup.

Jian Qing hadn’t eaten much tonight, at this point, she would feel hungry.

After preparing food for her, Lu Yinxi put on a thin coat, opened the door, stood at the doorway, waiting for Jian Qing to return.

She didn’t wait long before she saw the elevator numbers jumping floor by floor diagonally opposite the doorway.

With a “ding”, the elevator reached the 27th floor, the numbers stopped jumping.

Lu Yinxi stared intently at the elevator door.

The elevator door slowly opened, Jian Qing wearing all black, with a cold expression, dripping wet all over, carrying a white document bag in her hand, walked out of the elevator.

Still with an attitude of keeping people at a thousand miles’ distance, yet when she saw Lu Yinxi, revealed a trace of softness.

Lu Yinxi saw her bedraggled appearance, sighed heavily, took off her own coat, wanting to put it on her.

Jian Qing shook her head, stood at the doorway, didn’t go in: “Help me bring a bath towel.”

She was covered in rainwater, didn’t want to wet the living room floor.

Lu Yinxi ran into the room, brought a dry bath towel for her.

Jian Qing took the bath towel, handed the document bag she was holding to Lu Yinxi, then took off her shoes, stood in the entrance, closed the door, and in front of Lu Yinxi, peeled off her soaked clothes one by one.

“Lychees?” Lu Yinxi picked up the document bag and looked, “You went out in the middle of the night just to… buy lychees?”

Her voice gradually got quieter, Lu Yinxi put down the lychees, saw that Jian Qing had stripped off all her clothes.

Her black long hair clung to her shoulders, water droplets slid from her shoulders, slowly flowing over her body, the bright white light of the living room shone on her, making her skin appear even more like congealed cream.

The graceful figure of a woman, under the light, was completely exposed.

Her head seemed to become a pot of boiling water, bubbling and steaming, Lu Yinxi rubbed her nose bridge, reluctantly moved her gaze away, turned her back to Jian Qing, to avoid affecting the upcoming questioning: “Ho-honestly confess, Teacher Jian, what did you go out to do tonight?”

“Went back to school, stole lychees.”

The cold voice, and the rustling sound of wiping her body, came from behind, Lu Yinxi hugged the lychees in her arms, asked: “You ran out in the middle of the night, just to steal lychees from the lakeside at school for me?”

Jian Qing made an affirmative sound, didn’t say more.

It was pouring rain inside the campus, she drove past the lakeside, remembered the promise she made a few months ago to pick lychees for Lu Yinxi to eat, so she stopped the car, got out, in the dim dark night and cold tumultuous rain, picked lychees one by one from the shrubs, put them into the document bag.

At that time, while picking, she expressionlessly prayed that the patrolling security guards wouldn’t come over, to avoid losing face.

Lu Yinxi didn’t believe her explanation, hesitated for a few seconds, turned around, picked up the soaked clothes from the ground, lightly sniffed.

The body fragrance like light snow, the freshness of rain, and, a faint scent of formaldehyde.

She had gone back to school, stolen lychees, and possibly, gone to the anatomy building…

“Dog nose.” Jian Qing saw her action, smiled faintly, wrapped herself in the bath towel, walked barefoot into the room, went straight to the bathroom, to shower.

Lu Yinxi said nothing, put down Jian Qing’s clothes, took them to the laundry room, threw them into the washing machine to clean.

She went to heat up the soup, then poured out the lychees packed in the document bag, washed them over and over again, put them in a fruit basket, placed it on the coffee table.

Each lychee was plump and round, Lu Yinxi peeled one and put it in her mouth.

    Sweet juice and thick flesh.

The lychee trees that were only planted in that university town campus, it was rare that these lychees hadn’t been picked clean by the school workers and students.

Jian Qing finished showering, walked to the living room, Lu Yinxi had already prepared the hair dryer, seeing her come over, pointed at the dining table and said: “Go drink the soup, warm your stomach.”

She glanced at Lu Yinxi, obediently went to drink the soup.

A golden fried egg floated on top of the ginger soup, Jian Qing drank the soup and ate the egg spoonful by spoonful.

Lu Yinxi sat on the sofa, peeling and eating lychees one by one, pondering how to start asking her questions.

Jian Qing poured the soup into her stomach, picked up the hair dryer, dried her hair, occasionally glancing at Lu Yinxi.

Lu Yinxi hugged a panda plush toy, bored, fiddling with the panda’s paws.

Jian Qing finished drying her hair, walked over, moved away the plush toy from her arms, and lay down herself.

Like a child seeking comfort from a mother, she docilely rested her head on her lap, her forehead against her lower abdomen, eyes closed, slowly nuzzling.

Lu Yinxi looked down at the person in her arms, her gaze soft, her palm against her hair, gently caressing.

Being relied upon, being treated as a safe haven.

“Lan Bin’s remains were donated to our college, tonight I took that document to Lan Zhou, took her to see her father’s body.”

Jian Qing spoke, slowly explaining in a gentle voice what happened tonight.

Lu Yinxi sighed softly: “You must have scared her.”

For a layperson with no dissection experience, entering that anatomy building in the middle of the night would likely make them shiver all over.

Jian Qing was indifferent: “She said she wanted to see, so I took her to see.”

Although, before taking her to see, she thought her father was still alive.

Jian Qing deliberately didn’t tell her that Lan Bin had already become a corpse.

Lu Yinxi asked softly: “Was it only you who took her to see?”

“There was also a human specimen technician.”

Lan Bin’s remains were transported from the hospital today.

The newly arrived body teacher was registered and received by the human specimen technician, cleaned and disinfected, injected with tissue preservative, then submerged in a formaldehyde pool, for future teaching or experimental use.

A body not refrigerated needs to be made into a specimen within 6-8 hours, when Jian Qing brought Lan Zhou over, the human specimen technician was still working overtime in the anatomy building.

In that workroom filled with the smell of formaldehyde, Lan Zhou witnessed the remains, was so frightened she lost her soul, couldn’t help but vomit all over the floor on the spot.

Jian Qing was just beginning to look down on her, but saw that after vomiting, she bent over to recover for a moment, then voluntarily cleaned up, then tremblingly knelt before the specimen, and kowtowed three times.

That disdain then transformed into a thread of respect.

Lu Yinxi didn’t speak, planning to find time tomorrow to visit Lan Zhou.

The person in her arms had done evil, she would go to help accumulate virtue.

Jian Qing reached out, grabbed a lychee, peeled it, and brought it to Lu Yinxi’s lips: “From now on, let’s live our days peacefully and steadily.”

She put down all hatred, only wishing that henceforth, they would both be safe and happy, staying together for life.

Lu Yinxi ate the lychee, spat out the pit, knowing she had listened to her words from the evening, smiled slightly, bent down, and kissed her forehead.
