Volume 3: Song of the Wanderer

    Great Demon King 18

    The Game of the Brave

Ling Jiu was extremely excited, sharing her joy with Xin Lan, unable to contain her laughter.

    Xin Lan: “That happy?”

Ling Jiu: “Of course! You don’t know how many systems following that thread hoped for this host to fail [翻車 | fān chē | lit: vehicle flip; metaphor for public failure/downfall]. Such things are really disgusting. Other department systems might not think so, but we’re different. I’m from the face-slapping department, and dealing with cheating scumbags is one of our tasks. How could we not look forward to her downfall?

I’ve been dying to see this since the moment I saw the post!”

Xin Lan: “Seems like the person whose name she mentioned left quite an impression on her.”

Xin Lan had performed memory dilution many times, but it was merely an auxiliary function that couldn’t help people completely forget – there would always be impressions of varying depths.

Ling Jiu: “Actually, when I first saw the post, I hoped the original poster wouldn’t update anymore. After all, for some people, cheating isn’t absolutely unforgivable. If the host had only made one mistake, we wouldn’t be so worked up. Of course, in our AI mindset, there’s no concept of forgiveness or unforgiveness, because according to our basic laws, such things would never happen.”

Xin Lan treated it as something merely amusing, neither angry nor sympathetic – an irrelevant matter not worth commenting on.

Ling Jiu: “That’s why dating AIs is so much better!”

    Xin Lan: “Oh?”

Ling Jiu: “Host, don’t look at me like that, I don’t do office romances.”

Xin Lan had to resist the urge to mock her system, reminding herself it was just a shut-in.

Ling Jiu quickly tried to recover after blurting that out: “Uwu~ Host, you’re so amazing, I actually really want to get with you~”

Xin Lan: “Kid, you’re being too dramatic.”

Ling Jiu instantly normalized: “Okay, I’ll stop.”

    And so the topic ended.

However, after a while, Ling Jiu couldn’t help but excitedly continue.

Ling Jiu: “Hahaha, the OP said their host got dumped, serves them right!”

Xin Lan: “What’s the point of not breaking up – waiting to sweep their tomb during Qingming Festival? [清明 | qīng míng | traditional Chinese festival for honoring the dead]”

Ling Jiu: “Oh host, you don’t know, there are so many scumbags out there. Like attracts like [鍋配什麽蓋 | guō pèi shén me gài | lit: what lid fits what pot; idiom meaning people deserve who they end up with], they’re both willing participants.”

This was a lesson she learned from her first host.

If people are willing, what can you do? If you try to persuade them to break up, they might not appreciate it and think you’re intentionally trying to destroy their relationship.

Ling Jiu: “Hey host, what would you do if you found out your partner was cheating?”

Xin Lan: “I don’t have a partner, premise invalid.”

Ling Jiu: “Just asking, what if?”

Xin Lan: “Why do I feel like you’ve asked me this before?”

Ling Jiu: “I don’t remember, just tell me!”

Xin Lan: “Given my standards, I wouldn’t be looking for partners in a garbage bin. If they cheated, I’d first need to find out where the problem lies.”

Ling Jiu: “Just reasoning it out like that?”

Xin Lan: “Then take action according to capability. If they’re a delicate Omega…”

Ling Jiu: “That’s unlikely. Besides, would you let it slide just because they’re a delicate Omega?”

Xin Lan: “Of course not. Though their physical condition would determine whether it’s just mental pressure or both mental and physical pressure.”

This was just a hypothetical extension for Xin Lan, who took relationships very seriously.

She could hardly imagine how she would react if her future partner cheated. She might need to fight hundreds of battles just to calm herself down.

The mere thought of such a scene made her uncomfortable, like a defeated dog.

    Too humiliating and unsightly.

Ling Jiu: “Host, why not consider us AIs? We’re good-looking, never gain weight, can accompany you through different worlds, and most importantly, we’ll never be unfaithful.”

Xin Lan: “Didn’t you just say you don’t do office romances?”

Ling Jiu: “I didn’t say it had to be with me~”

Xin Lan: “I wouldn’t be interested in you anyway.”

    Silence, prolonged silence.

Xin Lan wondered if she had truly hurt the system’s fragile feelings.

    Xin Lan: “Kid? System? Jiu’er?”

Ling Jiu: “QwQ My heart hurts so much, only host’s kiss can make it better!”

Xin Lan: “The signal was bad just now, what did you say?”

Ling Jiu: “I said, host, look – they seem to have found other parts of the corpse.”

Xin Lan shifted her attention back to the current situation.

Pi Tianzi came out of the room holding a hand, her expression showing extreme disgust.

Ling Jiu: “She’s holding the right hand, but what we saw initially was the left hand.”

Xin Lan pondered briefly, not understanding what this young man was trying to do.

Initially, he had let his left hand wander around, but now when it was time to piece things together, why did he hide it? Moreover, if he could control his body parts, why didn’t he make them appear and reassemble automatically?

Could it be that the initial left hand wasn’t under his control, but someone else’s?

Though this possibility seemed unlikely – if it were true, it would mean the dismemberment killer was responsible.

And wouldn’t that suggest that if the hand wasn’t controlled by the young man but by someone else, the killer was also in here?

Yet it didn’t seem quite right – initially, that hand was blocking the light, preventing her from turning it on, but after Pi Tianzi came up, the lights turned on automatically. Perhaps this was part of the game mechanics, similar to the message Qi Haolin received when he first joined the game – that it would only begin when everyone was present.

Several possibilities swirled in Xin Lan’s mind while Ren Difei sat beside her, yawning and rubbing his eyes.

Ren Difei was truly hungry, and the best way to combat hunger was sleep, but who would dare sleep at a time like this? Wouldn’t that be courting death?

“Hey, you two, only we’re searching for the remaining parts while you both sit there watching like spectators. Don’t you think that’s a bit too much?”

Pi Tianzi emerged from the large room, highly dissatisfied at seeing the two people lounging on the sofa.

Xin Lan remained silent, eyes still closed, breathing steady.

Ren Difei also pretended not to hear, knowing when to be bold and when to be timid.

“If you two don’t want to go up, then don’t bother at all.”

Pi Tianzi’s anger rose as she raised her umbrella.

Xin Lan opened her eyes, giving her a cold glance.

Pi Tianzi, as if greatly provoked, aimed her umbrella’s tip at Xin Lan.

The way this woman had just looked at her was full of contempt, as if she were merely an ant, making it extremely uncomfortable to bear.

Pi Tianzi recalled her agreement with Qi Haolin, glanced at the violin beside Xin Lan’s sofa, and decided to strike first.

She launched a surprise attack toward Xin Lan, but her target wasn’t Xin Lan herself, but rather the violin beside her.

Hadn’t Qi Haolin said this woman’s violin was extremely powerful? If they could kick away her prop, let’s see what she could do.

Although Pi Tianzi’s umbrella had some potency, her movements appeared extremely slow and full of openings to Xin Lan.

The moment she lunged forward, Xin Lan snatched up the violin from the ground and swung it out, hitting dead center, sending her flying.

It happened in the blink of an eye – Ren Difei only saw a figure lunge forward and then fly back before realizing Pi Tianzi had made her move.

Yu Wanyan looked at her violin, words caught in her throat.

This wasn’t how a violin was meant to be used… but never mind, let Xin Lan use it however she wanted. The thing was quite sturdy anyway.

Pi Tianzi didn’t crash into the wall as Xin Lan had expected. Instead, her umbrella opened up, and her entire body floated in mid-air.

    Interesting.

This umbrella could make people fly when opened and serve as a weapon when closed – quite practical indeed. It was probably the most useful item after the violin and the green hat.

Pi Tianzi frowned as she endured the pain from being knocked back, surprised at how formidable this woman was – not only was her reaction speed incredibly fast, but she could even use the violin as a weapon without playing it.

Qi Haolin emerged at the sound of combat, and seeing that the battle had begun [拉開了帷幕 | lā kāi le wéi mù | lit: pulled open the curtain; meaning the start of something], he summoned three ghost spirits without hesitation.

The three female ghosts each had distinct features: one with an extended tongue, one crawling on the ground, and another floating in mid-air, all lunging toward Xin Lan.

When these three ghosts appeared, both Ren Difei and Pi Tianzi were startled, initially thinking these ghosts were spontaneous enemies they’d have to face.

“What are you standing there for? Attack! Those ghosts are my summons. Don’t forget what you promised me!”

Qi Haolin urged Pi Tianzi, who was still suspended in mid-air. She looked at him in surprise, her heart sinking.

She hadn’t expected this man to be so powerful, able to summon multiple ghosts – far more impressive than her own abilities. Yet this same man had admitted he couldn’t defeat the woman sitting there.

Pi Tianzi gritted her teeth and joined the attack anyway.

What’s done was done – only one person could leave in the end, they’d all become opponents eventually. Might as well work together to eliminate this woman first.

When the three ghosts lunged at her, Xin Lan had already swung her violin to knock away the closest one.

She stepped on the long-tongued ghost, struck it twice across the face with the violin until it was dazed, then raised the instrument to hit the floating ghost.

During the brief moment she was withdrawing her hand, an umbrella thrust toward her. She dodged sideways, nimbly flipping behind the sofa.

She reached for the violin bow, but the long-tongued ghost whipped its tongue around it and flung it away.

Ren Difei tried to help Xin Lan retrieve it, but Qi Haolin restrained him.

Qi Haolin was much more robust than Ren Difei, and restraining him was an effortless task.

Ren Difei, with his thin arms and legs, struggled under Qi Haolin’s grip, but after taking several punches to the stomach, he nearly threw up bile and collapsed limply to the ground.

Qi Haolin looked at him with contempt, grabbed his collar, and landed another punch to his face.

Ren Difei fell, and Xin Lan frowned at the sight.

She couldn’t afford to be distracted now, with the three female ghosts trying to cling to her like needles finding gaps in cloth [見縫插針 | jiàn fèng chā zhēn | idiom meaning to seize every opportunity], while Pi Tianzi attempted to stab her.

Xin Lan grabbed the floating ghost that was trying to strangle her neck and threw it at the long-tongued one, then shifted her position to dodge the incoming umbrella thrust while viciously stomping on the crawling ghost.

Yu Wanyan watched anxiously from the side before deciding to use her power to send the bow to Xin Lan’s hand.

A ghost shadow floating out from the green hat looked at Yu Wanyan in astonishment.

“The game rules state we can’t interfere directly. This counts as a violation.”

“I didn’t personally fight anyone, I just moved an object. My violin and bow are supposed to be one unit,” Yu Wanyan paused, then added, “Besides, what can you do even if I did break the rules?”
