The Game of the Brave
Even Xin Lan was surprised by this outcome.
Although she had genuinely thought about smashing this man’s head in, it was just a figure of speech to express her level of disgust, and she hadn’t actually intended to make it reality.
The mummified head was already burnt black beyond recognition, but as it fell to the ground, it somehow managed to flash a smile at Xin Lan.
The visual effect was quite disturbing, and Xin Lan frowned as she walked over and stepped on the head.
The little ghost couldn’t help but shrink her neck, realizing that when this big sister had talked about twisting off her head that day, it wasn’t just an empty threat – how frightening!
Yu Wanyan felt rather useless, as her powerful item seemed to be nothing more than an unnecessary tool in Xin Lan’s hands.
It was truly a disappointing reality.
When Xin Lan stepped on the head, she ground it down several times.
The headless torso lunged toward Xin Lan, but she pivoted and delivered a fierce beating to the approaching body.
Xin Lan kept kicking because she couldn’t bring herself to touch that charred black mass with her hands – the sticky, nauseating feeling from her earlier punch hadn’t yet faded.
Suddenly, the burnt corpse on the ground condensed into black mist before materializing back into human form.
He appeared completely unharmed, causing Xin Lan to narrow her eyes.
“Well, well, little girl, you’re quite capable.”
The man spoke while walking toward Xin Lan’s position.
His body began expanding at a visible rate, with a ferocious grin on his face.
“Your violin won’t break, will it?”
Xin Lan glanced at Yu Wanyan and asked.
“It won’t, unless it’s a ghost more powerful than me. But are you sure you want to use it as a bludgeoning weapon…?”
Before Yu Wanyan could finish speaking, there was a loud ‘bang’, followed by the sound of something heavy hitting the ground.
Once Xin Lan confirmed the violin wouldn’t break easily, she grabbed it, took a short running start, and leaped to strike the man who was transforming into a giant.
She used all the force allowed, and the well-made, sturdy violin smashed the man straight into the ground.
When the man tried to get up and counterattack, Xin Lan grabbed the bow and thrust it into his chest.
The bow’s flexibility was excellent, piercing straight through the man’s chest and pinning him to the ground.
He tried to condense into black mist again but found himself unable to disperse.
Yu Wanyan crossed her arms and sneered, thinking this ghost wasn’t much of a challenge – it wasn’t even as strong as the four ghosts summoned by Zhen Zhen’s green hat.
The black mist remained fixed in place, unable to disperse, and finally twisted back to its original form.
The violin bow piercing the man’s chest created an indescribably eerie scene.
He tilted his head, smiling at the little ghost girl standing not far away.
“Xinyu, come to daddy.”
“Shut up, you talk too much.”
Xin Lan kicked the man’s head – even as a ghost, he was still annoying.
She particularly despised losers who maintained their arrogant demeanor, like cockroaches in filthy sewers, trying to disgust others even when they couldn’t fight back, their crushed bodies still emitting a foul stench.
Xin Lan retied her hair behind her back and rolled her neck.
“You, come here.”
Xin Lan looked at the little ghost, who kept shaking her head.
She didn’t want to go over at all.
“Why so timid now? Weren’t you quite capable when you were setting fires and killing people?” Xin Lan beckoned to the little ghost, “Don’t worry, I’ve pinned this thing down here, he can’t get up. If he dares to try, I’ll stomp him back down.”
The little ghost hesitated for a moment before slowly walking over.
“I’m sorry, big sister. I shouldn’t have disturbed your sleep on the first day, and I shouldn’t have laughed about you not being able to find a partner.”
The little ghost bowed deeply in apology, her attitude completely sincere.
Xin Lan could feel her temple throbbing – sure, the little ghost was being genuine, but why did she have to add that awkward latter half of the statement?
Yu Wanyan became curious about these words – given Xin Lan’s level of brutality, how did this little ghost dare to say she couldn’t find a partner?
Who said that? She could do it.
She could apply for the position anytime – after all, Xin Lan smelled delicious, but…
Yu Wanyan concealed the contemplation in her eyes, staring steadily at that figure.
Xin Lan tilted her head as if sensing something, only to see Yu Wanyan’s somewhat innocent smile.
Something felt off, but Xin Lan couldn’t quite place what it was.
Never mind, the threat wasn’t significant enough to worry about.
The little ghost, or rather Feng Xinyu, trembled as she walked up to Xin Lan and the man pinned to the ground.
The man revealed a disgusting smile, slimy and repulsive.
She stepped back half a pace in fear – this man had been her living nightmare when she was alive. She feared him, loathed him, hated him, and finally ended everything with fire, but even in this situation, she still felt an instinctive terror towards him.
“Don’t worry, he can’t move now. I’ll keep watch for you. You can take revenge however you want – whatever he did to bully you, you can do right back to him.”
As Xin Lan spoke, she bent down, raised her hand, and slapped the man across the face.
The sharp sound of the slap rang through the air as the man’s head jerked to the side, and he glared at Xin Lan with cold eyes.
Xin Lan paid no attention and used her other hand to slap the other side of his face.
“And do it like this – double the force.”
She dusted off her hands as she stood up, looking at the little ghost beside her.
There was nothing to say to people like this – beating them was enough. Words alone could never make them realize how nauseating their actions were; a good thrashing was the only answer.
The little girl nodded to show she understood, and began punching and kicking the man on the ground, unleashing a flurry of kicks and scratches as if venting her frustrations.
Before the little ghost had been at it for two minutes, Xin Lan grabbed her by the back of her collar and pulled her up.
She remained in that position, looking confused.
“Use this.”
Xin Lan handed her the violin.
She had clearly seen the expression on the man’s face just now. Perhaps because of the child’s limited strength, those scratches seemed to mean nothing to him – he even showed a slightly pleased expression while the little girl was kicking him.
Such people never learn until they hit rock bottom. These types were so disgusting that even hitting them with hands and feet felt like an insult to one’s body and spirit – it was better to use tools.
Feng Xinyu took the violin, glancing hesitantly at Yu Wanyan, who smiled sweetly, appearing completely unbothered.
Feng Xinyu took a deep breath and raised the violin to strike the man on the ground.
“How dare you call yourself my father! How dare you claim to be my father! You’re not worthy to be my father! How dare you touch me! Disgusting!”
The man’s face contorted in pain as he let out agonized groans.
Xin Lan watched with satisfaction from a short distance, ready to prevent the man from lashing out and hurting the little ghost again.
There wasn’t much to say about this matter – it was all too disturbing to discuss.
Xin Lan didn’t even want to ask if the little ghost’s mother had also been burned to death. She figured probably not, given how that mother was always running around outside, and hadn’t appeared so far. It was just tragic for this child, so young, to have endured such things.
But not everyone had her level of resolution and initiative to end everything in the most decisive way. Most people probably just endured the oppression until they became numb.
The little ghost struck viciously, and by the time she stopped from exhaustion, the man’s head was beaten beyond recognition.
Yu Wanyan raised her hand, and both the violin and the bow stuck in the ground flew into her grasp.
As melodious, soothing music began to play, the man collapsed on the ground writhed as if being cut by invisible forces, letting out miserable screams.
The black shadow gradually disappeared, dissolving into black smoke that dispersed into the air.
Xin Lan felt the little ghost tap her, and the spot where she was touched felt strangely cool.
“Big sister, you can go up now.”
“What about the others?”
“Eh? They haven’t come out of my mist yet.”
“Release one of them for me.”
“Alright, which one do you want?”
Qi Haolin, who was currently dealing with the omnipresent fire, suddenly felt himself being thrown out.
Xin Lan stood with her arms crossed, watching him, and gestured for him to get up.
“Come with me.”
Qi Haolin hesitated, trying to back away.
“Or would you prefer I break your legs and drag you along?”
Qi Haolin’s body stiffened, his eyes darting around, before wisely choosing to stay still.
On the not-so-long staircase, Qi Haolin walked in front with Xin Lan behind him.
Xin Lan actually thought about Ren Difei, but after some hesitation, she didn’t ask the little ghost to release him too.
Since when had she become someone who did charity work? After all, this game was about survival of the fittest – everyone had their own fate.
Thinking this, Xin Lan walked to the stairway entrance, but still stopped her steps.
Ren Difei looked dazed, suddenly pulled out from his previous situation, he hadn’t yet recovered from what he’d just experienced when he saw the boss lady before him.
“I can only bring you this far. If you want to get out, you’ll have to reach the third floor by yourself.”
Xin Lan dropped these words before walking toward the second floor.
It wasn’t charity, just something done in passing.
Ren Difei slapped his forehead, breaking into a delighted smile.
The second floor was pitch black, without any light source, making it difficult to see the surroundings.
When Xin Lan tried to go back downstairs, she found what seemed to be an air wall at the staircase, making it impossible to pass through.
Ling Jiu: “Floor scan complete, distribution map as follows.”
A floor plan appeared before Xin Lan’s eyes. According to the layout, she was in an unusually large room with a very strange configuration.
This pitch-black room had pathetically little furniture – just one sofa and a cabinet.
Ling Jiu: “Aww, the items in this room are so harmonious. Host, you’ll have to figure this out yourself.”
Xin Lan: “??”
Qi Haolin immediately chose to quietly distance himself upon entering. Although he couldn’t see, he could slowly inch away.
Xin Lan heard the movement but couldn’t be bothered to deal with it – after all, he couldn’t escape.
A cold current stirred in the air, and suddenly Xin Lan heard the sound of chains being pulled.
Xin Lan looked up, locating the source of the sound. On the floor plan, that spot was empty.
Xin Lan: “Jiu, is there anything there?”
Ling Jiu: “There’s nothing there, just some chains fixed to the wall. It feels really perverted, and all the things in that cabinet are full of philosophy too. This is truly an evil room.”
As Ling Jiu lamented this way, Xin Lan’s expression became peculiar.
The cold sensation grew stronger, and the rustling sounds drew closer.
Qi Haolin had fallen silent at some point, and the chain sounds had stopped. In this extreme silence, Xin Lan felt an ice-cold hand rest on her shoulder.
