Volume 3: Song of the Wanderer

    Great Demon King 13

    The Game of the Brave

Xin Lan felt that fear and breakdown acutely, as ‘she’ looked helplessly at the dolls, knowing they couldn’t come to life.

The tall man behind her let out a low laugh and grabbed ‘her’ clothes.

Xin Lan rarely wanted to curse, but she hated this kind of scum.

This state of forced empathy made her extremely uncomfortable, the disgust towards the man behind her and the frustration at her own helplessness made her increasingly agitated.

She suddenly remembered what Shen Shuiyan had once told her about being omnipotent.

She certainly wasn’t omnipotent, just like now she could only stay trapped in this body through forced empathy, unable to change what had already happened.

‘She’ began struggling and crying violently, but perhaps due to the building’s good soundproofing, the people in the next room couldn’t hear.

No one came to save ‘her’.

If Xin Lan could move, she would immediately turn around and punch that man.

She knew what might happen next, but she didn’t want to experience it at all.

Sympathy was one thing, but it didn’t mean she wanted to personally experience such a situation.

She clearly had the ability to fight back, why did she have to stay in this little ghost’s body, forced to experience her past.

Perhaps due to Xin Lan’s strong willpower, in the next moment, she found herself separated from the current scene.

It was still the same room full of toys, but no one else was there.

Before her was a dress that had been cut to shreds, with scissors placed beside ‘her’ hand.

Xin Lan thought the truth wasn’t far from being revealed.

The answer was actually clear at a glance, though somewhat unbelievable, it was the most likely scenario.

What was this little ghost’s purpose in making her or them experience these things?

As Xin Lan pondered, ‘she’ sat up on the bed, took out a smartwatch from the bedside table, and dialed a contact.

“Hello, Dad, I miss you, when will you come to see me?”

‘Her’ voice was hoarse and tearful.

“Please come pick me up soon, I don’t want to stay here anymore, they’re all bullying me…”

Xin Lan listened to ‘her’ words with an indescribable feeling in her heart.

There was actually no man’s voice on the other end, only a ringtone.

“Sorry, the number you have dialed is powered off, please try again later, Sorry, the subscriber you dialed is power…”

‘She’ looked at the watch and lowered her head.

“Okay, Dad, I understand, I’ll be good, goodnight Dad.”

‘She’ turned off the watch, and the electronic voice stopped immediately.

‘She’ sat on the bed looking out the window, and Xin Lan’s gaze shifted with her, seeing the narrow world confined by the window.

Another bout of dizziness came, and Xin Lan was already familiar with that sensation.

This time, what appeared before her was a woman applying makeup.

“Mom, are you going out again?”

“Yes, sweetie, be good and stay at home.”

The woman stroked ‘her’ hair and continued applying lipstick.

“When will I be able to see Dad?”

The woman’s movements froze, and she put away her lipstick.

“Xinyu, Mom has told you many times, Dad has gone to a far place, he can’t come back anymore.”

“That’s not true, Dad will come back, you’re lying to me again!”

‘She’ angrily threw the doll she was holding at the woman and ran back to her room.

Xin Lan thought there was no need to guess who the answer was anymore.

By the looks of it, the little girl’s father must have died.

The scene change made Xin Lan feel dizzy.

‘She’ stood in the living room, where there was a photo album on the tea table, and the hidden photograph was placed on the table, with the man’s face looking gloomy.

    “Tear up this photo.”

The man looked at the woman beside him, whose expression showed hesitation.

“Don’t you dare touch this photo!”

‘She’ grabbed it from the table, clutching it preciously in her hands.

Xin Lan felt ‘her’ anger and terror, as ‘her’ body trembled with a bitter feeling in her nose.

“The person is already dead, what’s the point of letting her reminisce here every day?”

“Don’t! Don’t say anymore! Xinyu is still young, she can’t handle this kind of shock.”

The woman looked anxiously in ‘her’ direction, pleading with the man.

“It’s not like she doesn’t know her father is dead, what’s she pretending for? I’m her father now, understand?”

“You’re the one who should be dead! You’re not my father, you’ll never be my father!”

‘She’ shouted, her whole body trembling.

The sound of a slap rang out in the living room, ‘she’ was struck so hard she fell sitting on the ground, tears welling up in her eyes.

Xin Lan immediately became furious, cursing in her mind.

She was actually forced to feel that slap?

Xin Lan coldly stared at that man, wanting to immediately beat him until he was paralyzed.

“But you know she doesn’t remember any of it!”

The woman quickly ran over, wanting to touch ‘her’ face, but ‘she’ pushed her away.

‘She’ stood up, glared hatefully at that man, and ran into the room.

“Xinyu was severely impacted by her father’s accident. The day after the burial, she developed a high fever, and afterward forgot about her father’s death – you know this perfectly well, so why are you bringing it up in front of her now!”

“I think she knows very well in her heart, she’s just putting on an act.”

As this conversation carried from behind, ‘she’ closed the door and covered her ears.

This was probably a world unbearable for children. Xin Lan’s anger grew deeper – once she got out of this confined world, if she ever encountered this man, she would tear him to shreds without leaving anything behind.

If the accumulated time spent in mission worlds counted towards her age, in all her long life, she had never suffered such indignity.

As Xin Lan thought this, suddenly everything spun again, and Ling Jiu’s voice came into her mind.

Ling Jiu: Hey? Host? Hello? Can you hear me?

    Xin Lan: Mm.

Ling Jiu: You scared me to death! You suddenly lost contact just now, I couldn’t find you anywhere, thank goodness you’re back!

Ling Jiu had truly been frightened, after all, the system was bound to its host, existing within the host’s deep consciousness. Although their technology allowed them to freely traverse different mission worlds, they weren’t above all things and couldn’t do whatever they wanted.

Sometimes mission planes contained things that couldn’t be explained by science, or products of very advanced technology, which could rival their own technology.

For example, her first host was locked in place by a soul-binding ring in a cultivation plane, and she couldn’t take away her consciousness, only forcibly unbind and abandon that host.

But such artifacts were very rare, not existing in every plane – perhaps only one such thing existed among a thousand planes, and even then it was very difficult to find in that plane.

Her first host had traversed many worlds before unfortunately falling there.

Xin Lan briefly described to Ling Jiu what she had just experienced, discovering she was still in that bedroom.

Ren Difei and Qi Haolin also opened their eyes somewhat confusedly, seemingly having experienced something similar to her.

“The murderer is that little girl!”

    Ren Difei said with certainty.

Xin Lan was about to say something when she noticed thick smoke seeping in from outside the door.

She covered her nose and mouth, thinking of that little ghost.

Qi Haolin pushed open the door connecting to the side bedroom, and a wave of thick smoke rushed in.

“Is she trying to suffocate us to death in here?”

Ren Difei coughed several times, covering his nose while backing away.

The flammable items in the room began to burn, and Xin Lan pulled open the bedroom door as waves of heat from the flames rushed toward her.

The fire’s origin point was here; they could only survive by going outside.

Xin Lan didn’t think the ghost’s power could affect her much, and she picked up the violin beside her.

The moment she gripped the violin, the air around her suddenly became breathable.

Ren Difei and Qi Haolin were still covering their faces in discomfort. Xin Lan tilted her head and saw Yu Wanyan wink at her.

    “Thanks.”

Xin Lan thanked her softly and walked out through the flames.

Ren Difei and Qi Haolin rushed out behind her, looking quite disheveled.

The entire space was shrouded in mist, and Xin Lan suddenly couldn’t see anyone else’s face.

    “Don’t be afraid, I’m…”

Yu Wanyan, who had been following beside Xin Lan, began reassuringly.

Before she could finish her sentence, she received a death glare from Xin Lan.

The ‘here’ that hadn’t yet been spoken was forcibly swallowed back, and Yu Wanyan gave a light cough.

Well then, she knew Xin Lan was super fierce.

A child’s sobbing sound came from not far away, the sound faint and ethereal, inexplicably making one’s hair stand on end.

Xin Lan walked toward the source of the sound and saw the little ghost girl crouching there crying.

“Big sister, can you help me?”

The little ghost raised her head, blood tears on her pale face.

“Sure, what is it, tell me.”

    Xin Lan agreed readily.

The little ghost was stunned – that day this big sister had clearly been very irritable, how was she so agreeable now?

“He’s about to appear,” the little ghost shrank back, “if you can completely deal with him, I’ll give you the key.”

Xin Lan thought of the shadow Ling Jiu had mentioned, and cracked her knuckles.

    “That man, right?”

    The little ghost nodded.

Xin Lan flexed her wrist, she still remembered the grudge from that slap – although it wasn’t directed at her, under forced empathy that slap might as well have landed on her face.

Even without this grievance, death by burning was too easy for someone like him.

A dark shadow materialized in the mist, wearing a grotesque smile as it walked toward Xin Lan.

“Xinyu, stop hiding, come to daddy.”

Xin Lan felt disgusted just hearing those words and immediately launched a kick.

“Who are you to dare call yourself daddy?”

That kick landed on the man’s body, making him stumble back several steps.

He stared at Xin Lan as his form began to change.

A thick, burnt stench that could make one faint filled the air as his body became withered, looking like a charred corpse [Gān ShΔ« εΉ²ε°Έ – Mummified corpse].

He lunged at Xin Lan, black claws swiping at her face.

Xin Lan leaned back and quickly counterattacked, the feeling of her fist hitting the dried corpse’s skin was exceptionally nauseating.

Perhaps due to Xin Lan using too much force, combined with the corpse’s inherent brittleness, the man’s head was directly punched off, rolling onto the ground.

Yu Wanyan painfully swallowed and didn’t dare make a sound.
