Ex-Girlfriend – Chapter 45
by Little PandaVolume 3: Song of the Wanderer
Great Demon King 04
The Game of the Brave
It’s immoral to disturb someone’s clear dream [peaceful sleep], regardless of whether the disturber is a little girl, or rather, a little ghost girl.
Xin Lan didn’t know why she was chosen as the first target – did she really look a weak chicken?
The problem was that these ghosts liked to wander around in the dead of night, coming out after she fell asleep, which made the situation quite serious.
Only because it was a little girl did Xin Lan bother to give her a word; if it had been something else, she would have thrown a punch first.
The little girl was startled by Xin Lan’s reaction, her pale face showing traces of grievance, looking pitiful.
“Sister, my parents aren’t home, and I’m so bored being alone at home. Can you play with me?”
“No.”
Xin Lan glanced at the group of people sleeping haphazardly beside her, then looked around.
The surroundings seemed to be covered in a thin mist, making everything unclear except for the little girl in front of her.
The little girl puffed up her cheeks and sat cross-legged below Xin Lan, looking glum.
Xin Lan gave her a cold look and closed her eyes to go back to sleep.
The little girl froze, then immediately stood up.
“Sister, Sister, don’t sleep! Get up, Sister, Sister…”
The little girl called persistently, making Xin Lan’s temples throb. She irritably opened her eyes and grabbed the little loli’s collar.
“Didn’t your mother ever tell you not to disturb people when they’re sleeping?”
Xin Lan’s expression was irritated as she stared at the little ghost in front of her.
“Mom never said that!”
The little girl retorted defiantly.
“Then go ask your mom if I’m right or not!”
Xin Lan flung the little ghost girl away, her whole body radiating low pressure.
The little girl was thrown to the ground and let out a scream.
Xin Lan couldn’t be bothered to care – she was already dead, so what was the point of pretending?
The little girl sat on the ground, covering her face as she began to sob.
“You’re bullying me, I’m going to tell my mommy.”
“Go ahead.”
“You won’t play with me, you’re a bad person, mommy is a bad person too, you’re all bad guys!”
The little girl’s quiet sobbing turned into wailing, making Xin Lan’s expression grow increasingly dark.
“If only I didn’t have a rule against hitting children…”
Xin Lan pressed her temples, desperately wanting to stuff something in the little ghost’s mouth.
“You’re all bad people, none of you will play with me, none of you want me…”
The little girl muttered while sitting on the ground, then suddenly raised her head to look at Xin Lan.
That face no longer showed any trace of the previous pitiful expression; she was now expressionless, emanating an eerie feeling.
The thin mist floating in the air suddenly turned into thick smoke, and the air became filled with a choking smell.
The dense smoke kept creeping into the respiratory tract, forcing Xin Lan to cover her mouth and nose as visibility continued to decrease.
Xin Lan stood up, surrounded by an endless sea of smoke, unable to see anything.
Ling Jiu displayed a map marked with red and blue dots, with the red dot indicating the little ghost’s location.
Xin Lan walked into the thick fog and grabbed the little ghost with unerring accuracy.
The little ghost’s eyes widened, shocked at being discovered.
Enduring the increasingly suffocating smoke, Xin Lan used her other hand to grip the little ghost’s neck.
“What are you doing!”
“Do you know what happens to children who don’t behave?”
“If you disturb my sleep again, I’ll twist your head off, understand?”
The little ghost was already dead and couldn’t feel the sensation of suffocation, but when her neck was grabbed, an inexplicable fear made her tremble.
Xin Lan put the ghost down, and the moment she released her grip, the little ghost disappeared quickly like smoke.
The choking smoke gradually dispersed, and Xin Lan felt much better.
As she lay back down on the sofa, she heard a child’s voice coming from the mist.
“Mommy says that someone as fierce as you, Sister, won’t be able to find a partner in the future.”
???
Xin Lan closed her eyes – she didn’t need one anyway.
When she opened her eyes again, it was already the next morning.
She checked the time on her phone: 7:30.
But no light came through the windows, and the lights were still on like the night before. If not for checking the time, it would seem they were still in that dark night.
Everyone gradually woke up. The first person Xin Lan made eye contact with was Qi Haolin. He looked at her, and she returned his gaze coldly, neither avoiding nor flinching, until Qi Haolin uncomfortably looked away.
Only Moli was still asleep, though her brows were tightly furrowed.
“How strange, nothing happened last night, and we just slept straight through until dawn?”
Ren Difei rubbed his head, feeling puzzled. He had planned to stay up last night, but with nothing to do, he couldn’t even pull an all-nighter and had dozily fallen asleep.
Pi Tianzi: “Were you hoping for something to happen?”
Ren Difei: “Honestly, I feel both relieved and disappointed.”
“You’re crazy [literally ‘nerve illness’, common slang for calling someone crazy].”
Pi Tianzi frowned, her face looking somewhat haggard.
“Quick, look at your phones. It’s already 7:30 – shouldn’t it be light out by now? Why isn’t there any light?”
Sheng Lifan’s voice trembled, his hand unconsciously shaking as he held his phone.
Everyone checked their phones upon hearing this. There was still no signal, just like when they first arrived last night. Even emergency calls wouldn’t go through, only giving busy tones.
Pi Tianzi: “It’s true, it’s 7:30…”
The villa’s lights glowed softly, but looking outside from within, it was still pitch black.
Moli woke up in this unsettling atmosphere, rubbing her eyes.
After a few seconds of blankness, Moli remembered what had happened, and her expression changed slightly.
She looked at the group of people staring at her strangely and pinched her leg.
“Why are you all staring at me?”
“It’s already the year 8012, you’ve finally woken up.”
Ren Difei said with a ghostly tone.
Moli checked the time and gave Ren Difei the middle finger.
But when she glanced at the sunless interior, she immediately realized what was happening.
Ke Xuguang tried pulling the door again and shook his head at Xin Lan and the others.
Moli: “Didn’t you say these things usually only last one night?”
Ren Difei: “Well, you know I said ‘usually’!”
Pi Tianzi: “What should we do now?”
Sheng Lifan: “Who knows? We shouldn’t have come to this haunted place in the first place!”
As he spoke, he glared at Qi Haolin, who wasn’t one to back down from confrontation and glared right back.
“I didn’t force you to sign up and come here. With that heavy rain earlier, we couldn’t have reached our destination anyway. Blaming me won’t help.”
When Qi Haolin said this, his face showed no trace of guilt, as if this whole thing had nothing to do with him. Who could have guessed this was all an elaborate scheme to deliberately bring them here?
“Enough! What time do you think it is to still be arguing? We should think about what to do first.”
Ke Xuguang said impatiently, his fierce appearance making everyone immediately fall silent.
“Obviously, if this is a horror story, then we’re characters in it. Following the usual pattern, we’ll be assigned various ways to die.”
Ren Difei analyzed, and if it weren’t for his constantly shaking legs, he would have looked completely unafraid.
“I don’t want to die! I want to get out!”
Moli didn’t even bother acting cute anymore, clutching her small handbag tightly.
“Who doesn’t want to get out? Nobody wants to die, okay?”
“You’ve read a lot of stories – do you have any solution?”
Qi Haolin looked at Ren Difei, waiting for his answer.
“Logically speaking, in this kind of situation where we’re trapped and can’t leave, last night shouldn’t have passed so peacefully.”
Ren Difei’s gaze swept across everyone, his expression showing confusion.
Xin Lan silently played the role of an invisible person, observing everyone.
If that little ghost hadn’t chosen her last night, perhaps everyone would have seen someone get into trouble today.
“Did any of you encounter anything last night?”
Everyone shook their heads.
“This isn’t right. How could a ghost be so kind? Maybe this isn’t a supernatural story but a mystery story?”
Ren Difei proposed another possibility.
“What do you mean by mystery story?”
Moli asked curiously.
“For example, finding out the truth about a story, or finding clues to get out. If that’s the case, then the family of three we saw yesterday should be one of the clues to this puzzle.”
“The little girl, the little girl’s mother, the hidden family photo – the story must have something to do with the little girl’s father.”
Sheng Lifan calmed down considerably after hearing Ren Difei say there might not be ghosts.
Ren Difei: “Then let’s go look for clues in other places.”
Pi Tianzi: “Should we go together or split up?”
Qi Haolin: “Let’s split up. This place is quite big. We’re seven people, so we can divide into three groups.”
Moli: “Then I’ll go with you.”
Qi Haolin remained noncommittal [neither agreeing nor disagreeing], looking toward Xin Lan who was sitting to the side.
“Then I’ll go with you.”
Ren Difei suddenly pointed at Xin Lan. Being singled out, she raised an eyebrow and nodded.
“Haven’t said a word since the beginning – could she be mute?”
Moli, who was already wary of women more attractive than herself, immediately spoke sarcastically when she saw Qi Haolin looking at Xin Lan.
“She can speak.”
Qi Haolin’s face showed slight displeasure, but it quickly disappeared.
Moli closed her mouth and said nothing more.
With two groups chosen, the remaining Pi Tianzi, Sheng Lifan, and Ke Xuguang naturally formed the third group.
The living room extended in two directions, with the kitchen to the left and rooms to the right.
Ren Difei went left, while the other two groups went right.
Xin Lan noticed items on the dining table: half-eaten pizza, leftover trash from fried chicken and hamburgers, an unopened cup of instant noodles, and cola in paper cups.
Xin Lan glanced at the trash can, which contained white takeout boxes.
This didn’t match the situation in the photos they’d seen earlier. If this was a house where a mother lived with her child, there shouldn’t be so many takeout food remnants – it looked more like a bachelor’s residence [single male’s living space].
Xin Lan entered the kitchen and found meat on the chopping board that wasn’t fully cut, as if someone had stopped halfway and left the knife.
Strangely, the meat hadn’t spoiled yet, as if the owner had just stepped away moments ago.
Xin Lan picked up the cleaver from the chopping board and turned to look at Ren Difei.
“What are you looking at?”
Since earlier, this person had been staring at her continuously.
Ren Difei shuddered at the sight of Xin Lan holding the cleaver and couldn’t help taking a step back.
Actually, he had wanted to say earlier that maybe it wasn’t ghosts causing trouble, but that someone among them had already been killed by a ghost.
Generally speaking, the quiet, seemingly fragile girl in the corner usually turns out to be the final boss, which was why he specifically chose to team up with her.
Now though… was it too late to run?
