    BUG

Life and Death Examination Room 14

    Examination God

When she reappeared in the white lounge, Xin Lan looked around but didn’t see Wan Yan.

Her brow furrowed slightly. The next moment, she felt someone approach and take her hand.

Sensing the familiar aura, Xin Lan relaxed.

“I thought we wouldn’t be able to meet up.”

Wan Yan rested her head on Xin Lan’s shoulder, speaking in a tiny voice.

Her face held a light, joyful smile; she was in incredibly high spirits.

Xin Lan hummed softly in acknowledgment and sat down on a chair.

“The moment I appeared there, I recognized it wasn’t you.”

    “That perceptive?”

Xin Lan’s voice lifted at the end. Though her expression remained unchanged, inwardly, her lips curled into a smile.

“But of course. Because you’re one-of-a-kind in my heart.”

    【Ugh.】

    【Ugh ugh ugh.】

    【Ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh.】

Ling Jiu couldn’t resist the triple sigh.

So cringey! So cheesy! So corny!1

    Aaaaaah!

Xin Lan was amused by Wan Yan and couldn’t help but chuckle aloud.

Everyone else in the lounge stared strangely at the two pretty girls sitting there, their faces screaming, ‘Are you two devils or something?’

My god, how can they laugh under these circumstances?

Which one of them, having just escaped the siege of ghosts in the Fourth Examination Site, wasn’t panting and looking like they’d barely survived? Yet these two were actually laughing.

Wan Yan was dropping hints like crazy, absolutely delighted.

Cheng Zi was right, she couldn’t keep it bottled up too much. Love needed to be declared loudly! No Host would like a cold, emotionless System!

    Yep! She’d learned her lesson!

After the ten-minute break, that unique voice echoed in everyone’s mind again.

“The Fifth Examination is about to begin. Welcome to the Fifth Examination Site. All Examinees, please prepare.”

“There are a total of eight Examinees this time. The duration is fifteen days.”

    “Examinees, please proceed freely.”

    “The Examination begins!”

Xin Lan opened her eyes to find herself facing a transparent barrier.

This room wasn’t spacious, resembling a prison cell. Two camera probes hung from above. The furnishings were simple, all in a monotonous white.

Xin Lan saw the card in her hand and raised an eyebrow.

[You are Experiment Subject A1403. A biochemical crisis2 has broken out, and the virus is spreading. Your mission is to escort the product of Dr. Kana’s3 research to the Hope Base in the north. Delivering the research product to the base constitutes passing the examination.

Note: Not turning into a zombie is an Examinee privilege, oh~ But be careful not to get eaten, yo~ ♡]

    Not turn into a zombie?

Xin Lan rolled her neck, feeling a little excited.

When she used to be a villain, she had come to planes like this.

Apocalyptic crises, where she, as the villain, was usually the kind of lunatic bent on destroying the world. She had been the source of the virus, and she had been the Zombie King. She had a certain familiarity with this kind of setting.

Xin Lan looked opposite her. The barrier there had already been broken, and something had burst out.

This barrier seemed to have lost its energy shield; Xin Lan shattered it with a single strike.

【Host, the Commander says she is currently in the Central Control Room and has already seen you on the surveillance. She asked me to guide you.】

Xin Lan stepped out from behind the barrier and looked up at the surveillance camera.

Wan Yan’s gaze met hers through the screen. Knowing Xin Lan couldn’t see her, she still offered a smile.

“Professor, A1403 is out too! Will she go clear out those monsters?”

The Assistant looked helplessly at the beautiful woman in the white lab coat, his voice trembling slightly.

The lab had completely lost control. Many researchers had been infected. For some reason, the central computer had unlocked the energy barriers, letting those experiment subjects escape too.

The control room was safe for now, but who knew how long that would last.

    “Where is Dr. Kana?”

Wan Yan didn’t answer his question, asking another instead, her hands in her pockets as she looked at the NPC before her.

“Not sure. Last time I saw him, he was in S-Sector.”

Wan Yan nodded, her fingers flying across the light screen4.

“Teacher5, you don’t have the permissions to access S-Sector surveillance! Gaia6 won’t allow it!”

The Assistant saw Wan Yan’s actions and grew anxious.

    Insufficient Permissions, Access Denied!

These words flashed repeatedly on the light screen. Wan Yan ignored them, her hands continuously sliding across the screen, modifying the program.

    Insufficient Permissions, Access Denied!

    Access Denied!

The words ‘Insufficient Permissions, Access Denied’ nearly covered the entire light screen, carrying an extreme sense of pressure.

Cold sweat dripped down the Assistant’s forehead. He looked helplessly at Wan Yan, frantic with worry.

Suddenly, the screen full of red turned green. The Assistant’s eyes widened.

    “Teacher, you modified the permissions?!”

Wan Yan’s expression remained completely unfazed. Just a sub-world’s computer program, not even top-tier. If I couldn’t even crack this, what kind of System Commander would I be? Might as well retire and get rebuilt.

“Gaia, maintain surveillance on A3-Sector. Overlay the rest with S-Sector.”

Gaia executed the command, and the surveillance screens began to change.

Wan Yan’s fingers slid across the screen, searching for any trace of Dr. Kana.

Her finger stopped at one spot, zooming in continuously.

“It’s Dr. Kana! Look at him, seems like he’s in the central area.”

Wan Yan nodded, noticing the person beside Dr. Kana.

“Lock onto facial features. Pull up their data.”

Wan Yan pointed at the person next to Dr. Kana. Gaia immediately locked on, and the person’s information popped up.

Wan Yan looked at the face on the screen, then swiped, shifting her view back to Xin Lan’s side.

Xin Lan walked down the white corridor. She was barefoot, not making the slightest sound.

This level was utterly silent, quiet to the extreme. There were no sounds at all; she could only hear the faint sound of her own breathing.

There were probably four labs on this level, of varying sizes. Every door had been destroyed.

The signs of destruction varied in size. Even the main door blocking the front end was twisted and deformed.

Xin Lan walked out. On one side was an elevator, the other, stairs.

The elevator indicator showed it was on the first floor. Xin Lan wasn’t foolish enough to take the elevator; she had no desire to press the button and have a pile of zombies pop out to say hello.

【Host, take the stairs. Go up two floors. The Commander says there’s something in the elevator, but the surveillance equipment in the stairwell is damaged, so she can’t see the situation there. She says be careful, she’ll wait for you there.】

Ling Jiu, the dedicated messenger, did her job.

Xin Lan turned into the stairwell. The lights here were actually on. A glance revealed nothing, seemingly.

She moved upstairs quietly, sticking close to the wall. As she reached the next floor, she suddenly heard a chewing sound.

The sound was very clear, seemingly right beside her ear. Xin Lan looked upwards, but distinctly heard nothing again.

Her hearing had indeed been enhanced to its maximum value, but it shouldn’t be this effective. It was likely an inherent trait of this experiment subject’s body.

Going up another half-flight of stairs, she saw the thing.

It was a researcher. Dressed in a work uniform, she was hunched over a corpse lying on the ground, gnawing on it.

Smelling the scent of a living person, she lifted her head excitedly, dropped the flesh in her hands, and stood up unsteadily.

Her movements were slow as she dragged her body forward. Rotting flesh7 was exposed on her face, looking quite terrifying.

Anyone unfamiliar with such scenes would probably be disgusted, but Xin Lan was completely immune to this sort of thing. She met it head-on and cleanly snapped the zombie’s neck.

She continued up the stairs and pushed open the door to the floor where she was supposed to meet Wan Yan.

The door opened only a crack. After Xin Lan made a sound, the zombies that had been pouncing towards Wan Yan turned their heads towards the source of the sound.

Wan Yan had exited the Central Control Room. The NPC had practically clung to her leg crying, which felt incredibly realistic.

In the end, seeing so many zombies outside, the NPC didn’t follow her out. Wan Yan didn’t mind, taking her weapon and giving the zombies outside a good beating8.

There were many zombies in the corridor on this level; almost all the zombies from the previous two floors seemed to have been drawn here. Wan Yan wielded an energy gun, performing skull-splitting9 shots on the zombies.

The zombies lunged towards Xin Lan. Xin Lan had no weapon in hand, but she easily crushed10 the zombies that came at her.

The process, well, was a bit disgusting11, and the tactile sensation wasn’t great either.

Wan Yan tossed a gun over. Xin Lan kicked off the wall, launched herself into the air, caught it mid-flight, and turned back to annihilate and execute the remaining threats.

Only when all the zombies on this floor had fallen silent did the two regroup.

Xin Lan was about to ask Wan Yan about the identity card, but Wan Yan spoke first.

“Let me find you some shoes first.”

Wan Yan looked at Xin Lan’s bare feet and led her back to the Central Control Room.

    “A1403?!”

Seeing Xin Lan, the Assistant inside shrank back.

“There should be spare clothes here.”

Wan Yan opened the door to a break room, found a set of clothes and shoes in a cabinet, and had Xin Lan change.

When Xin Lan came out, Wan Yan was looking at the surveillance screen.

“This is the S-Sector surveillance. Dr. Kana is right there. But beside him, there’s a familiar face.”

Wan Yan pulled up the surveillance feed for Xin Lan to see.

Xin Lan hadn’t expected to run into a former ‘classmate’ here – the boy she met in the Second Examination Site, the one who introduced himself as Yuan Yuan.

“To get to S-Sector from here, you have to pass through here, here, and here. Two locations have relatively dense zombie populations, one has very few.”

Wan Yan pointed to the routes on the monitor, indicating three paths for Xin Lan.

Any player here would definitely choose the path with fewer zombies, but Wan Yan still laid out all the routes.

“Reach this point, pass through a door, and you’re in S-Sector. He’s in the central area of S-Sector, not hard to find.”

“Let’s go then. Have you seen anyone else?”

Wan Yan shook her head; no others had been spotted.

There were eight Examinees in this exam. Including the two of them and Yuan Yuan, that was only three. There should still be five others.

Wan Yan and Xin Lan headed out, following the planned route.

They chose the path with fewer zombies. As expected, only a few zombies were wandering aimlessly on that path. Before the zombies could even react, Xin Lan and Wan Yan had already incapacitated them.

“Is your mission also to escort Dr. Kana’s research results?”

“Yes. Looks like his research result should be the antidote, but perhaps it hasn’t been developed yet.”

Wan Yan nodded. The text on these cards always revealed some information. Saying it’s a ‘research result’ implies it’s either a serum, or the serum is still under development.

“Escort it to the Hope Base in the north?”

Hearing this, Wan Yan paused, a strange expression on her face.

    “You’re not?”

Xin Lan noticed her odd expression and also stopped walking.

“No. Mine says… deliver it to the White Deer Base in the north.”
