After Being Scummed – Chapter 8

Ah, ah, ah, ah, don’t call me fairy sister!

When Zuo Jingyou arrived, Tong Tong, who was sitting on the bed, immediately focused all her attention on her.

Tong Tong stretched out her arms towards Zuo Jingyou, cuddling softly, “Mom, you’re back! I want a hug from Mom!”

Zuo Jingyou quickly walked to the bedside, lovingly embracing her daughter, her eyes filled with tears as she asked gently, “Tong Tong, is it still hurting?”

Tong Tong nestled in her arms, looked up at her, and smiled, shaking her head, “It doesn’t hurt anymore. The doctor auntie gave me a shot and helped me bandage the wound. Mom, don’t worry.”

After comforting Zuo Jingyou, Tong Tong lowered her eyes, feeling a bit guilty, “I’m sorry, Mom. It’s because I was playing around that I fell. I won’t do it like that again next time.”

Tong Tong was truly a very well-behaved child. She could comfort her mother and apologize, and Zuo Jingyou couldn’t bear to say anything more. She hugged Tong Tong, bent down to gently kiss the uninjured part of the child’s forehead, and whispered to comfort her, “It’s all right, as long as you’re okay. Mommy is very happy that Tong Tong knows what is dangerous, and Mommy won’t blame you.”

Zuo Jingyou reached out and ruffled the child’s hair, soothing her in a soft voice, asking if there were any other painful areas. Tong Tong revealed all the places where she was hurt and playfully said she wanted to take a nap. After Zuo Jingyou gently blew on her, Tong Tong smiled and said, “Ah, Mommy used happy magic on me, and my wound will heal quickly!”

The child laughed merrily, and Zuo Jingyou felt relieved. She ruffled the soft strands of hair at the back of the child’s head and smiled gently, “Yes, Tong Tong will get better very soon.”

Seeing that Zuo Jingyou had comforted the child, Yang Yi, the assistant standing nearby, then smiled and said, “Alright, Tong Tong, you’re a good girl. Auntie Yang Yi also brought a gift that can make the pain go away.”

“Ta-da!”

Yang Yi reached behind and pulled out a magical fairy Barbie doll, handing it to Tong Tong.

Tong Tong received the gift, her eyes filled with delight. “Wow, it’s a magical fairy! And it has a magic wand!” Wen Wen, who was nearby, also leaned in, looking at the gift with envy. “Wow, it’s such a big magical fairy! I want one too, I want one!”

Yang Yi reached out and ruffled Wen Wen’s black hair, her face full of smiles. “Wen Wen, I’ve prepared one for you too, it’s in the car. You’ll see it when we go back.”

Wen Wen raised her hands in excitement and urged Tong Tong to unwrap the gift.

Seeing that both children were captivated by the gifts, Zuo Jingyou gave Tong Tong a gentle look and raised her gaze to Yin Bai, calling out, “Ms. Yin…”

Yin Bai stood at the foot of the bed, leaning on a cane, her gaze wandering around the room, her mind filled with thoughts of how to gracefully and without embarrassment slip away shortly. After all, this family was having such a joyful time together, and she felt entirely superfluous.

However, when Zuo Jingyou suddenly called out like that, it nearly made her drop the cane in surprise.

Yin Bai snapped back to reality, clutching the cane in her hand, and couldn’t help but reflect on how she had been so self-assured and displayed her youthful eccentricity in front of Zuo Jingyou just a moment ago. She felt utterly embarrassed. Yet, she was accustomed to presenting a composed facade in public, capable of concealing even the most awkward situations behind a mask of indifference.

She pursed her lips and directed her gaze towards Zuo Jingyou, pretending to be aloof as she inquired, “Miss Zuo, is there something you need?”

Although they hadn’t interacted much, Zuo Jingyou had a vague sense that Yin Bai was someone burdened by various concerns. She smiled briefly, choosing not to bring up what she had observed earlier, and simply expressed her gratitude sincerely, “I heard from Auntie Xu that you drove Tong Tong here today. Thank you.”

Zuo Jingyou gently ruffled her daughter’s hair and looked at Yin Bai with a charming smile. “I didn’t expect you to be my mother’s neighbor. Anyway, for what happened today, thank you.”

Yin Bai maintained her aloof demeanor. “It’s nothing, no need to be polite. We’re neighbors, it’s just a small favor.”

She hesitated for a moment, glanced at Tong Tong sitting on the hospital bed, and mustered the courage to say, “Now that you’re here, Tong Tong doesn’t need my care. I have something to attend to, so I’ll take my leave.”

As she finished speaking, Yin Bai, leaning on her cane, hastily made her way towards the door.

Zuo Jingyou instinctively called out to her, “Hey, Ms. Yin… about the medical expenses you covered…”

Yin Bai replied without looking back, “It’s alright, you don’t need to repay me.”

Tong Tong, lying on the bed, heard that she was leaving and raised her head to look at Yin Bai’s departing figure. She asked with some confusion, “Fairy sister, are you going home?”

Upon hearing the term “fairy sister,” Yin Bai felt quite embarrassed. It’s just something kids call each other, not meant to be said in front of adults!

Yin Bai’s steps paused for a moment, and she turned around, leaning on her cane, and managed to force a smile. “Yes, I’m going home. Your mom is here now, so you can have fun with her.”

Tong Tong responded with an “oh” and looked at her somewhat pitifully. “Can we still come to play with you in the future?”

“Of course you can,” Yin Bai’s smile softened a bit, and she said sincerely, “When you’re feeling better, you can come to the yard to find me.”

Wen Wen, leaning over from the edge of the bed, quickly added, “And will you tell us stories?”

Yin Bai nodded, “Yes, I will, as long as you don’t disturb me.”

Talking so much in front of someone she wasn’t familiar with was quite challenging for Yin Bai. She paused for a moment, attempting to make herself appear friendlier. “Well, I’m going back now. Goodbye.”

After the farewell, Yin Bai hurriedly walked out with her cane.

Tong Tong and Wen Wen watched her departing figure and shouted in unison, “Goodbye, fairy sister!”

Yin Bai stumbled for a moment and almost bumped into the door on her way out.

Ah, ah, ah, ah, they shouldn’t call her “fairy sister” in front of adults! She felt like she was about to die of embarrassment! How could she continue to pretend to be a mature adult like this?

With her cane, Yin Bai briskly walked away, swiftly leaving the hospital room.

Zuo Jingyou sat by the bedside, staring in the direction of her disappearing figure, feeling somewhat bewildered. This Ms. Yin… it seemed like she wasn’t very comfortable with social interactions. She used to think Yin Bai was just aloof and distant, but now, seeing this…

She got along well with children but seemed to struggle with adults, feeling a bit…

“Hey… Jingyou Jie, why do I feel like Ms. Yin might have a touch of social anxiety?” Yang Yi, standing nearby, looked in the direction where Yin Bai had disappeared and accurately voiced Zuo Jingyou’s inner thoughts.

Yang Yi turned and, with a hint of gossip, said while glancing at her boss, “I’ve seen her a few times at events before, and people in the industry say she’s famously aloof and doesn’t talk much. But now, look at her… isn’t she quite chatty?”

As Yang Yi spoke, she suddenly raised her left hand, excitedly shouting, “Believe in the power of love! Become a magical fairy!”

After her little performance, Yang Yi chuckled, “How can someone be this adorable!” She seemed like a child, full of playfulness.

Zuo Jingyou chuckled and looked at her assistant, who seemed filled with a desire to perform, shaking her head as she said, “Alright, didn’t I tell you not to gossip about others in private?”

“Go find Ms. Yin’s assistant’s contact information and inquire about the medical expenses. We still need to reimburse her for that.”

Yang Yi made an OK gesture and then left the hospital room to contact Yin Bai’s assistant.

Because Tong Tong had taken quite a fall from the wall, her injuries were not minor. After much hesitation, Zuo Jingyou, once Yang Yi had left, picked up her phone and went to the restroom. She removed He Zhiwen from her blocked contacts and made the call.

As soon as she dialed, He Zhiwen almost instantly picked up. His voice sounded exhausted as he said, “Thank goodness, Jingyou, you finally decided to contact me.”

He Zhiwen didn’t wait for her to speak and spilled out a long string of words like pouring beans, “Are you willing to cooperate with me? The rumors are getting out of control, and it’s detrimental to both you and me, not to mention Lin Xiao. If you come out with me to clarify…”

As Zuo Jingyou listened to the voice of the man on the other end of the phone, her mind drifted for a moment. It was just half a year ago that they were the envy of everyone, a divine couple. But just as He Zhiwen had once loved her, in the blink of an eye, he fell in love with another man, whom he referred to as his “Muse,” with a passion that was equally intense.

This man was like a burning fire, fervently devoted to art, film, and love. There was a time when Zuo Jingyou firmly believed that this fire would forever envelop her in its warmth.

Yet, she never expected that he would decisively turn away, scorching her and leaving her alone, standing in place, reduced to ashes.

Zuo Jingyou took a deep breath, suppressing her emotions, and leaned against the sink as she softly said, “I don’t want to discuss this with you right now…”

Zuo Jingyou hesitated for a moment, swallowed the lump in her throat, and then slowly exhaled before speaking in a calm tone, “Zhiwen… Tong Tong, she… had an accident… If you have the time, please come and see her.”

He Zhiwen was taken aback. “Tong Tong is injured! How did it happen, and where is she hurt? Where are you? I’ll fly back right now!”

Zuo Jingyou paused and said, “I’ll have my assistant send you the address shortly. For now, please don’t discuss our matters in front of the child. Just come back to comfort Tong Tong.”

“As for the other matters, we can discuss them later.”

After saying this, Zuo Jingyou hung up the phone decisively and added He Zhiwen back to her blocked contacts.

After completing all of this, Zuo Jingyou leaned against the sink, looking at He Zhiwen’s name on her phone, her mind filled with a jumble of thoughts.

Ever since she discovered that incident, every time she saw He Zhiwen’s name, she couldn’t help but question herself, why did such a thing happen?

Why would someone bound to her in a marriage contract, someone who had said he would love her forever, fall in love with someone else? How did it even start between them? What exactly drew him to that person? Where did she fall short? Did she do something wrong?

Countless question marks swirled in Zuo Jingyou’s mind, making her feel anxious, restless, and utterly exhausted.

But everything would pass eventually… even if the process was excruciating, it would ultimately pass.

Zuo Jingyou raised her hand and slapped her own forehead, giving herself a momentary clarity. She shouldn’t dwell on it; the situation was what it was, and thinking about it further wouldn’t change anything.

There was no choice but to face it.

Zuo Jingyou took a deep breath, turned, and washed her slightly reddened eyes with water. She took her time before finally stepping out of the restroom.

Upon seeing her daughter happily playing on the bed, Zuo Jingyou wore a gentle smile. “Tong Tong… Mommy has some good news to tell you!”

Tong Tong looked up, gazing at Zuo Jingyou with a big smile. “What good news does Mommy want to tell me?”

Zuo Jingyou smiled and said, “Daddy said he’s coming to see you soon!”

Upon hearing the news that her dad was coming, Tong Tong’s eyes lit up, and she eagerly asked, “Really? Really? Can I see Daddy?”

“Yes, you can. You’ll get to see him very soon.”

But soon after, she wouldn’t be able to see him as often.
