Volume Ten: Those Few Years After She and I Broke Up
Courage
A single “I miss you” made tears stream down Yi Jing’s face.
For some reason, she felt that Wen Nuan’s “I miss you” pierced her heart1 more than any words of love that entwine to the bone2.
With a movement of her fingertips, Wen Nuan wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes and coaxed softly, “Xiao Jing… don’t cry.”
Yi Jing sniffled, holding back a sob. “Are you uncomfortable anywhere?”
Wen Nuan shook her head slightly and immediately felt a wave of dizziness. She let out a long breath. “I’m fine.”
“I’ll go get a doctor to check on you.”
Just as Yi Jing was about to leave, her hand was gripped tightly.
“Don’t go,” Wen Nuan didn’t have the strength to hold her back, but she knew Yi Jing wouldn’t leave. “Stay with me.”
Yi Jing’s heart softened. She immediately sat back down by the bed, holding Wen Nuan’s hand. “Mm, I won’t go. I’ll stay with you.”
Wen Nuan’s lips curved into a smile as she looked at her.
Her gaze slid from the space between Yi Jing’s eyebrows to the tip of her nose, red from crying, and finally landed on her rosy, slightly chapped lips.
Wen Nuan raised her hand and caressed her lips. “Have you had any water?”
Yi Jing’s eyes darted away. “…I have.”
“You’re lying.”
The pause was too obvious.
Yi Jing grabbed the bottled water on the table, took a big gulp, and wiped her moist lips. “I have now.”
Wen Nuan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Xiao Jing, how can you be so cute?”
A faint blush appeared on Yi Jing’s face. She knew how childish her action just now had been.
“You’re injured, and you still have the energy to tease me?”
“Xiao Jing,” Wen Nuan took her hand and intertwined their fingers. “It doesn’t hurt. Don’t be scared.”
The corners of Yi Jing’s eyes reddened, and she clenched her jaw. “How could it not hurt?”
That city gate tower… It was so high.
“It doesn’t hurt. I was thinking of you, and my heart felt so sweet that it didn’t hurt anymore.”
The moment she fell, Wen Nuan’s mind was filled with images of Yi Jing.
Her smile, her tears, her screams, her anger, her despair and helplessness.
It was as if they were imprinted on Wen Nuan’s bones, carved into her soul, surging, flourishing…
So it turned out that loving someone could truly make a person be reborn.
In her ardent, deep love, she was reborn.
Cong Hui sat up, rubbing her eyes. She looked at the two people by the hospital bed gazing deeply into each other’s eyes. Their figures were enveloped in sunlight, becoming hazy and beautiful, as if time had stood still at that moment.
“Wen… Wen Nuan?” she called out softly.
Hearing the voice, Yi Jing immediately straightened up, wanting to let go of Wen Nuan’s hand, but was held tightly by her.
She paused for a moment and stood a little closer to Wen Nuan.
“Mm,” Wen Nuan responded. “You’re awake?”
“Mm,” Cong Hui replied dazedly.
She blinked her eyes, looked at the now-awake Wen Nuan, and shouted, “WEN NUAN, YOU’RE AWAKE?!”
The others who were still sound asleep were startled awake by Cong Hui’s loud voice.
Zhou Hao came tumbling in from outside and asked in a panic, “WHAT? What’s wrong with Wen Nuan? Should I call a doctor?”
Zhai Yi pressed her aching forehead, saw that Wen Nuan was awake, and asked, “Feeling any better?”
Wen Nuan looked at everyone watching her with concern, and a wave of warmth spread through her heart.
She smiled faintly. “Don’t worry, I feel much better.”
“Wen Nuan’s awake?” Zhou Hao rushed to the bedside. “How are you? Are you uncomfortable anywhere? Do you need me to get a doctor to take a look?”
“I’m fine, Zhou-ge3, I’m already much better.”
Zhou Hao let out a long sigh of relief and said with lingering fear, “You have no idea, when you fell from the city wall, you scared me to death.”
Wen Nuan felt the small hand in her palm trembling. She gave it a gentle squeeze and smiled faintly. “My fortune is great and my life is great, I won’t die that easily. Don’t worry.”
“You… you really are the artist who gives the least peace of mind4 I’ve ever managed, bar none.” Zhou Hao raised his hand, pretending he was going to hit Wen Nuan.
Suddenly, he felt a cold gaze, and his eyes met Yi Jing’s indifferent ones. He flinched, pulled his hand back, and laughed awkwardly. “Just kidding, just kidding.”
“Her injuries haven’t healed yet, it’s not a good time for jokes,” Yi Jing took out her phone and looked at Wen Nuan. “Since you’re awake now, let’s transfer hospitals. To Jingcheng5 People’s Hospital. I’ve already had someone prepare doctors and a room. The helicopter will arrive in an hour.”
Everyone: “…..”
Zhai Yi pursed her lips. “President Yi, when did you prepare all this?”
Yi Jing said flatly, “I prepared it yesterday. I planned to transfer her back to Jingcheng after she woke up.”
A trace of nervousness flashed in her eyes, worried that Wen Nuan would resent her for making the decision on her own. “The medical resources in Jingcheng are better. We’ll go there to recuperate and get a full-body checkup, okay?”
Wen Nuan squeezed Yi Jing’s hand and said with a smile, “I’ll listen to whatever you say.”
Yi Jing’s eyes lit up with irrepressible joy. “Okay.”
Cong Hui looked at Wen Nuan and Yi Jing’s clasped hands, confused. The strange atmosphere between them made her wonder, “Why do I get the feeling you two are dating?”
Yi Jing bit her lip. “No…”
“Of course,” Wen Nuan interrupted Yi Jing and gave her a gentle smile. “I like Yi Jing, and I want to pursue her.”
Yi Jing’s eyes widened. “….!?”
The others: “….!?”
Zhai Yi had a calm expression, as if she had known all along.
The hospital transfer procedures were completed quickly; mainly because the power of money is great.
In the morning, everyone was still in the Jinghai City hospital, marveling that Wen Nuan’s lustful guts wrap around the heavens6, not knowing the height of the heavens or the thickness of the earth7 enough to dare pursue the president of the Feili Group. By the afternoon, they were in Jingcheng People’s Hospital watching Yi Jing busily serving Wen Nuan tea and water. Everyone marveled that it was truly a case of one being willing to dish it out and the other being willing to take it8. It blinded their dog eyes9.
Cong Hui nudged Zhai Yi and said with narrowed eyes, “You knew something, didn’t you?”
Zhai Yi said innocently, “I just found out about their relationship too.”
“I don’t believe you,” Cong Hui made a gesture with two fingers. “Do you really think I’m stupid and easy to fool?”
Zhai Yi really wanted to nod, but her morals wouldn’t allow her to do so.
“No, we’re all friends. How could I fool you?”
“Really?” Cong Hui said doubtfully.
Zhai Yi said seriously, “Of course.”
“Alright then,” Cong Hui believed Zhai Yi. “I’ll go ask Zhou-ge. I keep feeling like he’s hiding something from us. Let me go investigate.”
Zhai Yi encouraged her, “Okay, go for it.”
“Okay.”
An Siya watched Cong Hui run toward Zhou Hao as if to view death as a return home10 and said helplessly, “You’re fooling her again.”
“How nice. Having such a naive and cute friend is truly my blessing,” Zhai Yi remarked.
“…..” An Siya glanced at the loving couple in the hospital room. “You knew about President Yi and Wen Nuan’s relationship all along, didn’t you?”
Zhai Yi tacitly agreed.
“It’s not hard to see. The way their eyes entangle with each other.”
An Siya hesitated. “It’s just… have you noticed that Wen Nuan seems to have changed?”
She felt her words were disjointed, but after this accident, she could clearly feel that the entire aura around Wen Nuan had changed.
It was as if she’d suddenly opened up to a wide panorama11.
Zhai Yi took a deep look at Wen Nuan. The smile on her face no longer held hesitation or confusion. When she looked at Yi Jing, the determination and conviction in her eyes were even stronger.
It was as if she had begun to believe she was worthy of loving and being loved.
“As the saying goes, when a person experiences a life-or-death moment, they will have an epiphany. Perhaps Wen Nuan figured some things out, so she seems different.”
An Siya felt that Zhai Yi’s explanation was very plausible.
“An epiphany?” Cong Hui cut in. “What epiphany? Who had an epiphany? Is Wen Nuan going to become a nun?”
Zhai Yi: “…..”
An Siya: “……”
Zhai Yi’s variety show still had to continue filming. An Siya and Cong Hui were temporarily scheduled for a commercial performance by Zhou Hao and also left. Zhou Hao said a few words to Wen Nuan, and with Yi Jing there to take care of her, he felt that staying would make him a third wheel, so he decisively left first.
At this point, the only ones left in the VIP hospital room were Wen Nuan and Yi Jing, who was sitting on the sofa to the side, peeling an apple for her.
“Xiao Jing?”
Yi Jing stopped and looked up. “What is it?”
Wen Nuan patted the space beside her on the bed. “Come up here, keep me company.”
Faced with Wen Nuan’s invitation, Yi Jing was a little flustered. She put down the knife and apple, wiped her hands, and walked over.
“I’m here,” Yi Jing held her hand. “I’m staying with you.”
Wen Nuan shifted her body over. “Lie down, I want to hold you.”
Yi Jing hesitated for a moment, took off her jacket, got on the bed, and was pulled into Wen Nuan’s embrace.
“Why do you want to hold me?”
“Because I like you.”
Yi Jing’s pupils trembled. “What?”
Wen Nuan smelled the fresh scent on her and said softly, “Xiao Jing, I like you.”
“….Really?”
She found it hard to believe.
“I once told you that I would never like you, even if I died. But now that I’ve died once, I’ve discovered that I really, really like you.”
Wen Nuan looked at Yi Jing’s trembling eyes, stroked her hair, and said tenderly, “When I was falling, when I was unconscious, I was only thinking of one thing.”
Yi Jing’s voice trembled. “…What?”
“If God could give me a chance to live again, I wanted to win you back and love you properly.”
Wen Nuan sighed. “It’s wonderful. God heard my plea and gave me a chance for the prodigal son to return12, to return to your side.”
“Xiao Jing, I like you. Can I pursue you?”
Yi Jing didn’t answer her. Instead, she hugged Wen Nuan tightly, burying her tears in the crook of her neck, and in her heart, she softly agreed.
Wen Nuan gently stroked her trembling back, again and again, and hummed softly in her ear, “Twinkle, twinkle, little star…..”
The song was gentle, soothing her agitation and hesitation, allowing that heart that had been drifting to finally land.
【Female Lead’s Blackening Value has decreased. Current Blackening Value is 4.9!】 the System let out a long sigh of relief.
Wen Nuan heard the System’s broadcast, and her lips curved slightly. “Tongzi13.”
【I know what you said to the Lord God,】 the System looked at Wen Nuan, reached out a hand and patted her. 【Don’t be afraid. You don’t just have her, you also have me. We’re partners forever.】
Wen Nuan felt a sense of relief. “Thank you.”
The System increased the pain block. Wen Nuan felt a wave of relief, and the pain in her body eased considerably.
【No need to thank me. We don’t need to be so polite with each other.】
“I know,” Wen Nuan held Yi Jing, her gaze world-weary and distant. “I’m just feeling a bit emotional.”
The System asked, puzzled: 【What’s wrong?】
Wen Nuan lowered her head, looking at the sleeping Yi Jing, her eyes rippling with a tenderness one could drown in. “I believed in her passionate love time and time again, and time and time again, I yearned for her directness and intensity.”
“She clearly did everything, just quietly waiting for me to come back and love her.”
“But in the end, in this love, the one I never believed in was myself.”
The System pondered: 【So?】
Wen Nuan kissed the space between her brows, with a devout and sincere heart14.
“She gave me boundless courage, allowing me to believe in myself.”
All along, she had liked others to take the initiative to approach her, to love her.
But now, the initiative would start with her.
