When the Female Lead Becomes Obsessive – Chapter 230

Volume Ten: Those Few Years After She and I Broke Up

The Test

Wen Nuan left decisively, giving Yi Jing absolutely no chance to catch up, because she knew Wen Xiuning’s methods of dealing with her went far beyond this.

【The female lead’s blackening value is 9.2!】the System complained weakly. 【Ever since you returned to this world, the female lead’s blackening value hasn’t dropped at all. Ancestor, can we please just finish this final mission world properly?】

“Do you know how I feel right now?”

【What?】the System asked, not understanding.

Wen Nuan scratched her head and sighed. “The damage I’ve done to her is already done. No matter what I say, she’ll think I’m lying. She’ll think I’m only being nice to her for money.”

This sense of helplessness and frustration tormented Wen Nuan endlessly.

“I can’t reveal the mission the main system gave me, or I’ll be blocked by the Heavenly Dao1.”

“So I can only open up a new path. Otherwise, Yi Jing and I will never be able to cross this chasm in our hearts.”

Wen Nuan gave a bitter smile. “I finally know how Yan Hui felt when I screwed him over. That guy probably felt the same way I do now.”

Truly, it is not that retribution is lacking, its time just has not come.

【Open up a new path? What are you planning to do?】the System asked, curious.

Wen Nuan lit a cigarette, her eyes growing darker in the ember’s glow as she said viciously, “Die for her to see.”

System: 【…】

Wen Nuan returned to her empty dorm room. Just as she was about to take a shower, Cong Hui sent her a video call request.

She accepted, and the screen filled with the faces of Cong Hui and An Siya, both flushed red from the cold.

“Hey, left-behind child2,” Cong Hui said, adding frost to snow.

“Hey, cavewoman3,” Wen Nuan shot back.

“What’re you up to?” With the score evened, Cong Hui began her official greeting. “Have you eaten?”

“Just got home, haven’t eaten yet. Did you guys just finish skiing?” Wen Nuan saw the vast, endless expanse of white snow-capped mountains behind them.

“Yup, just finished,” An Siya said, taking the phone. “We were just video-chatting with Zhai Yi. She’s still filming her variety show, so we couldn’t talk for long. We figured you’d definitely be free, so we called you.”

Wen Nuan chuckled. “Looks like you two are having a lot of fun?”

Cong Hui shouted excitedly, “THAT’S RIGHT! THE MOUNTAINS HERE ARE BEAUTIFUL, AND THE SNOW IS SO CLEAN YOU CAN EAT IT!”

“You let her eat snow?” Wen Nuan looked at An Siya with concern.

An Siya replied calmly, “She wanted to. I stopped her.”

“That’s good. She left her brain at home, so I’m counting on you,” Wen Nuan said with heavy words and a deep heart.

An Siya gave a salute. “I will not fail the organization’s trust in me. I will definitely take good care of this brain-dead4 comrade.”

Cong Hui: “…”

She swatted An Siya, then rolled her eyes at Wen Nuan. “I got a huge burst of inspiration here and wrote another song. I’ll let you try it out when I get back, ‘kay?”

“Okay,” Wen Nuan agreed.

Cong Hui had a natural gift for writing lyrics and composing music. A talent-type contestant.

You could say everyone in their band was a talent-type contestant. They were born with talent and skill, while she was born beautiful.

The System couldn’t help itself: 【yue5!】

Wen Nuan: “…Got a problem?”

Sensing the murderous aura, the System decisively backed down: 【Nope.】

After chatting for a bit, Cong Hui got restless again and abandoned An Siya to go skiing.

An Siya looked at Wen Nuan, who was all alone in her dorm room. “When do you join the film crew?”

Wen Nuan’s agent had landed her a role. Although it wasn’t a big part, the film was a major investment and a huge project. If the director hadn’t specifically requested Wen Nuan, she never would have gotten in with her current level of fame.

“The day after tomorrow.”

Her agent had already booked her a flight to Jinghai City. All Wen Nuan had to do was pack her things and go.

“It’s your first time acting, so don’t be nervous. If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can ask me. Even though I haven’t been in a major production, I’ve been in a few dramas that were pretty well-received. You could say I’m your senior in the acting world,” An Siya said.

An Siya was most famous for playing the drums, but she had an award-winning actor for an uncle. So, An Siya had been immersed in the craft since childhood, influenced by her uncle.

Later, her uncle had pulled her into a few film sets, and she had acted in several TV series and movies. Her performances were well-loved and praised by the public.

But since An Siya’s true passion was music, she never focused too heavily on acting.

Wen Nuan smiled. “Okay, thanks.”

An Siya waved her hand dismissively. “What’s there to be polite about? We’re friends. It’s what I should do.”

She glanced back at Cong Hui, who had just fallen over. “That one took a tumble. I’m gonna go check on her. Talk to you later.”

“Alright, be safe.”

“Mhm, see you.”

An Siya hung up. Wen Nuan stood up and pulled a six-pack of canned beer from the fridge.

She slumped onto the rug, leaning against the sofa. She popped open a can and chugged it down, letting out a beer-scented burp.

【Are you drowning your sorrows in wine?】

“No, I’m just a little tired.” Wen Nuan took another sip. “We’re so close to the end, but there are still so many unsolved mysteries.”

The System pondered this. 【Indeed.】

They did not know what the suddenly appearing WU index was.

They did not know why they could return to their original world without paying a price.

They did not know if the unfreezing of the ten mission worlds would really be the perfect ending they imagined.

An ending she had once anticipated so eagerly now made Wen Nuan feel a little hesitant and afraid.

【What are you worried about?】the System asked, sensing her emotions.

Wen Nuan swallowed a mouthful of beer. “I’m worried that nothing will go as I wish.”

【It won’t be like that,】 the System comforted her. 【The Main God said that as long as you eliminate the female lead’s blackening value, you can unfreeze the points from the mission worlds, and then you can retire in peace and stability.】

【Whether you want to use the points to retire directly or use them to return to your very first world, the Main God will grant your wish.】

Wen Nuan felt a restlessness in her heart, as if a thick fog was obscuring everything. She couldn’t see through it, couldn’t grasp the truth.

“I hope so.”

Wen Nuan decided to take it one step at a time. She believed that all mysteries would eventually be made clear to all under heaven.

For an entire day, Secretary Li stood guard outside Yi Jing’s room. She could hear the roars of anger and the sounds of crying from within, tragic and fierce, like the final despairing wail of a hopeless soul.

If she hadn’t noticed her boss’s absence from the company, if it weren’t for the fact that her boss had never been late or missed a day of work in the three years since taking over, Secretary Li would probably never have seen such a fragile, broken Yi Jing.

She knocked on the door, her voice filled with worry. “Boss, it’s been a whole day. Won’t you come out and eat something? I made some congee. Please have a little. Don’t keep drinking, it’s bad for your health.”

The only response was the sound of a bottle crashing.

Secretary Li knocked again. “Boss, whatever it is, please don’t keep it bottled up inside. If you think I’m worthy of your trust, why not tell me about it? My lips are sealed. I absolutely won’t breathe half a word of it to a third person.”

“Boss, please answer me. Don’t scare me, okay?”

“Boss, if you don’t say anything, I’m going to call Miss Wen!” Having run out of options, Secretary Li could only resort to this last-ditch effort.

Just as she was about to head downstairs, she heard the door behind her open.

Secretary Li spun around excitedly, only to be stunned by the sight of Yi Jing.

She had never seen such a listless Yi Jing. Her clothes were covered in wine stains and rumpled with wrinkles.

Her hair was a mess, her eyes were bloodshot and webbed with red veins, and the gloom in them was almost tangible.

The emotions in her eyes were too complex, and the coldness radiating from her made Secretary Li’s heart tremble with fear.

“First, go to the bank. Then bring Wen Nuan here.”

“Bring her?” Secretary Li didn’t quite understand the intention behind that word.

Yi Jing’s gaze was as sharp as a knife, her tone ruthless. “If she resists, knock her out and carry her here.”

Secretary Li: “…”

Wen Nuan was woken up early in the morning by that shabi6 Cong Hui, who claimed to have written another song and was desperate to share her masterpiece with her.

Wen Nuan stared with a cold expression as Cong Hui chattered on excitedly, and then, at the peak of Cong Hui’s enthusiasm, she hung up the video call.

Cong Hui: “…”

Unable to tolerate this abuse, she tried to call Wen Nuan back, only for a red exclamation mark to appear in the dialogue box.

Cong Hui: “…”

FUCK!

Wen Nuan collapsed back onto the bed, all sleepiness chased away by Cong Hui.

She rubbed her face, got out of bed, and washed up, just in time to hear a knock on the door.

Wen Nuan went to open it and saw four muscular men in black suits standing in front of her. “You are…?”

“You’re Miss Wen Nuan, correct?” the man in sunglasses at the front asked.

“Is there a problem?”

The man raised a hand. “Our boss requests your presence.”

“And who is your boss?”

“The CEO of the Feili Group.”

Yi Jing?

Inviting her with this kind of entourage… it looked exactly like a kidnapping.

“And if I refuse to go?” Wen Nuan tested.

The man in sunglasses smirked confidently. “You will go.”

So they were prepared to force her?!

Although Wen Nuan could beat these guys, she wanted to see just what Yi Jing had in store for her.

“This is a civilized world. If we can talk, let’s try not to use our hands.”

The man adjusted his sunglasses. “Please get in the car.”

Wen Nuan followed the four big and burly men in suits to a car. The vehicle twisted and turned, shaking off the paparazzi, before pulling up to Yi Jing’s house.

The moment Wen Nuan got out, the men drove away.

She looked at the villa before her. As a loud clap of thunder echoed across the sky, Wen Nuan had a feeling she might not leave this place alive today.

The door was unlocked. Wen Nuan pushed it open and walked in.

Secretary Li was waiting for her in the living room. Seeing her, she said nothing and simply pointed upstairs.

Wen Nuan nodded and walked up to the second floor.

Yi Jing’s bedroom. The lights were off, and not a single sliver of light penetrated the darkness.

She knocked on the door and announced herself. “It’s me.”

A hoarse voice came from inside. “Come in.”

Wen Nuan pushed the door open, and it seemed to bump into something, making an ding-ling-dang-lang sound.

She saw the floor littered with empty wine bottles and used cigarette holders. The two of them stared at each other in silence.

Yi Jing picked up the phone from her bed and pressed play.

Hearing the familiar dialogue, Wen Nuan let out a cold laugh. “Wen Xiuning’s tactics are the same as ever.”

“Aren’t you?” Yi Jing’s voice was laced with shards of ice. “The same tactic still works on you.”

“So… you believe this recording?”

“What? You think it’s not credible?” Yi Jing sneered. “The person speaking in it isn’t you? Wen Xiuning deliberately synthesized it?”

“No, the person speaking in it is me,” Wen Nuan admitted frankly.

“Then what was the point of your question?”

“I just wanted to know if you have any trust left for me in your heart.”

Yi Jing violently hurled the bottle in her hand. It shattered next to Wen Nuan’s ear, the shards nearly grazing her cheek.

She roared in a low voice, “TRUST? YOU WANT TO TALK TO ME ABOUT TRUST?”

“ARE YOU EVEN WORTHY?”

Wen Nuan bit her lip. “You still chose to believe Wen Xiuning’s recording.”

“What else?” Yi Jing laughed without humor, her teeth clenched. “Should I believe you? Believe that you befriended me for money? Believe that you’re one person in front of my face and another behind my back? Believe that you let Wen Xiuning give up Hanwen Group just to get away from me? Believe your lion’s-big-mouth7 shamelessness?”

Wen Nuan lowered her head, remaining silent.

Seeing her silence, Yi Jing took it as a confession.

She wiped a tear from the corner of her eye and opened a briefcase on the bed. It was stuffed to the brim with stacks of RMB8.

Yi Jing grabbed a stack of cash and threw it at Wen Nuan, her voice dripping with bitterness and mockery. “Three years ago, Wen Xiuning gave you five million to leave me, and you agreed quickly and cheerfully.”

“You’re so obedient. So if I give you double to stay, will you agree?”

Yi Jing kept throwing money at her as she spoke, her tone growing more venomous and sharp. She glared at Wen Nuan. “Ten million to stay by my side. WILL YOU AGREE?”

“Twenty million to kneel before me and repent. WILL YOU AGREE?”

“Thirty million… to let me play with you… and break you. WILL YOU AGREE?”

“Forty million, fifty million, a hundred million… the more money I give you, the more you’re willing to agree to anything without any bottom line, right?”

Wen Nuan stared at the money piling up at her feet. The pink banknotes stung her eyes, and tears began to fall, one drop after another.

Enraged, Yi Jing grabbed an armful of cash and flung it at her, screaming herself hoarse, “WEN NUAN, HOW CAN YOU BE SO DAMN CHEAP?”

Her own defective roots were at work, wounding the fragile girl and also wounding herself until not a single patch of skin was intact.

The “scumbag” mission had been a test for her from the very beginning.

And she had lost, a defeat that smeared the ground.
